Abstract:Anatase TiO2 nanowires have been directly synthesized via a one-pot solvothermal approach. The curved nanowires with a length of ca. 300 nm and a diameter of ca. 10 nm are grown along the [101] direction and assembled into hierarchical structures. After annealing, the anatase TiO2 nanowires perfectly retain the nanostructure, and manifest excellent photocatalytic activity for the degradation of Rhodamine B. Abstract:Nanosized TiO2 powder of high surface area was prepared from an aqueous solution of titanium(IV) bis(ammonium lactato) dihydroxide using a continuous hydrothermal flow synthesis (CHFS) reactor which uses superheated water at 400°C and 24.1MPa as a crystallizing medium. Freeze-dried nano-TiO2 was heat-treated in air over a range of temperatures and then the resulting powders were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), BET surface area measurement, and Raman spectroscopy. The particle size of the ‘as-prepared’ TiO2 made using CHFS was ca. 4.8nm (by HR-TEM), and grew with increasing heat-treatment temperature. It was found that the onset of the anatase–rutile transition of heat-treated nano-TiO2 in air occurred at 500°C and reached 100% rutile at 900°C. The Raman band (Eg) at ∼150cm−1 of anatase (nano-TiO2) softens as the particle size increases with heat-treatment temperature (up to 600°C). The photocatalytic activity of the TiO2 powders for the decolourisation of methylene blue dye was assessed. The effects of nano-TiO2 anatase-rutile phase composition, crystallinity, and crystallite size on the catalytic activity were investigated.

Abstract:Dual-phase anatase/TiO2-B nanoparticles have been synthesized with layered K2Ti6O13 nanofibers prepared in advance as precursors via a one-pot hydrothermal route. It is believed that the synergistic effects of the hydrofluoric acid and mixed solvent of the distilled water and ethylene glycol induce the transformation of K2Ti6O13 nanofibers to dual-phase anatase/TiO2-B nanocomposite particles. Compared to the conventional routes, the present TiO2-B is achieved directly in the hydrothermal processing without further annealing at high temperature. Due to the heterojunction among the dual-phase of anatase and TiO2-B, the separation of photogenerated electrons and holes is enhanced. In consequence, the dual-phase anatase/TiO2-B composite nanoparticles exhibit excellent performance for the degradation of RhB over the pure anatase nanoplates.

Abstract:Hierarchical flower-like H2Ti5O11 center dot 3H(2)O assembled with radial nanowires was fabricated via a template-free solution-based reaction, and was converted to TiO2 with distinct phases and morphologies by the subsequent acid-treating or annealing. The HCl treatment achieved the controllable conversion from titanate nanowires to rutile nanorods by varying the temperature and acidity. When compared with the as-synthesized titanate nanowires and the thoroughly transformed rutile nanorods, their mixtures were found to exhibit the best dye adsorption ability towards rhodamine B and methylene blue in water. The H2Ti5O11 center dot 3H(2)O nanowires decomposed in sequence to anatase and rutile after a subsequent calcination in air, via an intermediate phase of H2Ti4O9 center dot H2O. The hierarchical structure could be retained up to 800 degrees C. When utilized as photocatalysts to degrade rhodamine B in water, the 550 degrees C-calcinated powder, with mixed phases of anatase, rutile, and srilankite, demonstrated the highest photocatalytic activity.

Abstract:Titania with nanostructures has attracted considerable attention due to its potential use in catalysts, gas sensors, photovoltaic cells, photonic crystals, etc. This paper reports the synthesis of titania nanoflowers by simply oxidizing pure titanium with hydrogen peroxide solutions containing hexamethylenetetramine and nitric acid at a low temperature of 353 K. Titania nanoflowers with the crystal structure of anatase or a mixture of anatase and rutile were obtained after a subsequent thermal treatment to crystallize the as-precipitated amorphous structure. Photocatalytic tests revealed an excellent photocatalytic property of the titania nanoflowers.

Abstract:Mesoporous nanocrystal clusters of anatase TiO2 with large surface area and enhanced photocatalytic activity have been successfully synthesized. The synthesis involves the self-assembly of hydrophobic TiO2 nanocrystals into submicron clusters, coating of these clusters with a silica layer, thermal treatment to remove organic ligands and improve the crystallinity of the clusters, and finally removing silica to expose the mesoporous catalysts. With the help of the silica coating, the clusters not only maintain their small grain size but also keep their mesoporous structure after calcination at high temperatures (with BET surface area as high as 277 m2/g). The etching of SiO2 also results in the clusters having high dispersity in water. We have been able to identify the optimal calcination temperature to produce TiO2 nanocrystal clusters that possess both high crystallinity and large surface area, and therefore show excellent catalytic efficiency in the decomposition of organic molecules under illumination by UV light. Convenient doping with nitrogen converts these nanocrystal clusters into active photocatalysts in both visible light and natural sunlight. The strategy of forming well-defined mesoporous clusters using nanocrystals promises a versatile and useful method for designing photocatalysts with enhanced activity and stability.

Abstract:Anatase TiO2 nanowires with a diameter of 5–10nm and length of 500nm to 2μm have been successfully synthesized by modifying TiO2 nanoparticles (P25) using the microwave heating method. The microwave power, reaction pressure, and reaction time for the synthesis of TiO2 nanowires were 500W, 0.5–3.0MPa (corresponding to a temperature range of 175–260), and 40–70min, respectively. X-ray diffraction (XRD), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (SEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), and the BET techniques were used to investigate the phase structures, morphologies, and specific surface areas of the TiO2 nanowires. The effects of reaction time, pressure, and different post-treatment processes on the microstructures of TiO2 nanowires were discussed. It has been shown that the microwave heating method is efficient in transforming TiO2 nanoparticles to anatase TiO2 nanowires.

Abstract:In this paper, anodic oxidation method was successfully employed to the direct growth of immobilized TiO2 nanowires on titanium foil in ethylene glycol electrolyte solution contained HF and water. The morphologies of the TiO2 nanowires could be tuned by changing the content of HF and water. The structures, morphologies and optical properties of TiO2 nanowires were characterized by SEM, XRD, UV–vis and PL. It was found that the nanowires originally grew from the splitting of TiO2 nanotubes. The gas phase photocatalytic activities were investigated by photodegradation of gaseous toluene under UV irradiation, and irregular TiO2 nanowires showed the best photocatalytic ability.

Abstract:Na2Ti6O13 nanoplates, nanowires, and continuous nanowire network films are hydrothermally formed on a large scale directly on Ti substrates for the first time. The morphology of the formed Na2Ti6O13 nanostructures can be easily tuned by varying the experimental parameters of temperature, reaction duration, and the NaOH concentration. Our study demonstrates that the synthesized Na2Ti6O13 nanostructures are easily converted into H2Ti3O7 nanostructures - a desirable precursor for the fabrication of various TiO2-based nanomaterials - with shape preservation, by an ion-exchange process. Anatase, a mixture of anatase and rutile, and rutile TiO2 nanowires are formed when the H2Ti3O7 nanowires are annealed at 450,600 and 750 degrees C, respectively. The optical properties and the photocatalytic activity of H2Ti3O7 nanowires and of the TiO2-based nanomaterials are also addressed. The approach described in this study provides a simple and novel method for the large-scale synthesis of various TiO2-based nanostructured materials that grow directly on Ti substrates and are ready for a wide range of practical applications, such as the photodegradation of wastewater.
Room‐Temperature Hydrolysis of Potassium Titanyl Oxalate and Water‐Assisted Crystallization for TiO2 with High Photocatalytic Activity

Abstract:The commonly adopted approach to synthesize nanostructured TiO2 starting from titanates demands a hydrothermal environment to achieve the titanate precursor, and a subsequent high temperature calcination to fulfill the decomposition of titanates and crystallization of TiO2. In this report, hydrogen titanate aggregates were achieved by a room-temperature hydrolysis of a potassium titanyl oxalate in an aqueous H2O2 solution. The subsequent immersion in water at 80 degrees C induced the crystallization of TiO2 with a mixture of anatase nanoparticles and rutile nanorods. The anatase fraction increased with increasing immersing duration in hot water for up to 72 h. The low-temperature crystallized TiO2 powders possessed abundant surface hydroxyl groups (similar to 38 %), high specific surface area (similar to 126 m(2)/g) and pore volume (similar to 0.50 cm(3)/g). When utilized to assist photodegradation of rhodamine B in water under UV light illumination, the reaction rate constant was twice that of the commercial P25 TiO2 nanoparticles. The high photocatalytic activity is contributed to the abundant surface hydroxyl groups, high specific surface area, and the appropriate mixture of anatase nanoparticles and rutile nanorods (similar to 84:16 in weight).

Abstract:One dimensional (1D) single crystalline nanostructures facilitate electron transport and reduce the charge recombination; whilst nanotubular structure and a roughened surface provide more active sites as well as more opportunities for target molecules to reach the photocatalyst. As a result, TiO2 thin films with such a structural design can be anticipated to possess excellent photocatalytic activity. In this study, top opened nanowires with nanoprotrusions on the surface, which are hierarchical yet single crystalline as a whole, were synthesized by a simple acid treatment at 80°C for 36h of hydrothermally synthesized titanate nanowires, followed by a final calcination at 450°C for 1h. The hierarchical TiO2 films exhibited significantly enhanced efficiency when utilized to assist the photodegradation of rhodamine B and phenol in water under UV light illumination.
Facile Synthesis of Ni-doped TiO2ultrathin Nanobelt Arrays with Enhanced Photocatalytic Performance

Abstract:Because of the high specific surface area and enhanced charge migration, TiO2 with unique belt-like nanostructures finds promising applications in various fields such as photocatalysis, dye-sensitized solar cells, gas sensors, and Li-ion batteries. In the current study, a solution combustion procedure was firstly adopted to prepare a black water-proof precursor. The black precursor interacted with H2O2 at ambient temperature, achieving a precursor solution that is capable of fabricating hydrogen titanate (H2Ti2O5·H2O) nanobelt arrays on metallic Ti substrates at 60 °C. Subsequent calcination in air at 400 °C achieved arrays of ultrathin anatase TiO2 nanobelts of ca. 2–4 nm in thickness. The addition of nickel nitrate in the combustion solution achieved the Ni-doping into the resultant TiO2 nanobelts, which did not alter the nanobelt structure but significantly reduced the band gap from 3.2 eV to 2.9 eV. When compared with the commonly alkali-hydrothermal synthesized anatase TiO2 nanobelts, the present ultrathin nanobelts exhibited much improved photocatalytic activity when utilized to assist photodegradation of rhodamine B in water. The ultrathin nanobelt structure is believed to contribute to the high specific surface area, the much reduced charge migration path, and the enhanced charge transport along the longitudinal direction. The appropriate Ni-doping further enhanced the photocatalytic performance, because of the increased light harvesting efficiency and reduced charge recombination.

Abstract:Titania nanowires (TiO2-NW) with tunable aspect ratios and morphologies were directly synthesized using a simple alcohol-thermal technique. Specifically, ethanol and acetic acid were used as solvents and lithium ion was used as the capping agent to promote the conversion of titanium butoxide into TiO2-NW. The morphologies and crystal phases of TiO2-NW were determined by the molar ratio of solvents and the content (mol%) of lithium ion. The band gap of TiO2-NW with pure anatase phase is slightly bigger than that of TiO2-NW with a mixture of anatase and rutile phases. All TiO2-NW could achieve effective decolorization of methyl blue (the decolorization rate is over 95%) after 35-min ultraviolet (UV) irradiation.

Abstract:Using a nonhydrolytic solution approach, we demonstrate the bulk synthesis of extremely thin crystalline TiO2 atomic wires in the anatase phase with diameters reaching the atomic limit of a few angstroms (approximately 4-5 A). These nearly monodisperse, atomically thin, and soluble TiO2 wires fill a most important size gap in nanowire fabrication. Preliminary results on photocatalytic activity of the atomic wires are also presented on degradation of methylene blue under visible light. These atomic wires are expected to promote exchanges between theory and experiments in fundamental studies of a one-dimensional (1D) system and provide unique building blocks to construct high-performance devices.

Abstract:In this paper, we report on a nonaqueous synthesis of single crystalline anatase TiO2 nanorods by reaction between TiCl4 and benzyl alcohol at a low temperature of 80°C. The resulting samples were characterized with X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, high resolution transmission electron microscopy, nitrogen adsorption, X-ray photoelectron spectrometry and UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. We proposed that the TiO2 nanorods were formed through an oriented attachment mechanism. More importantly, these single crystalline anatase TiO2 nanorods exhibited significantly higher photocatalytic activities than commercial photocatalyst P25. This study provides an environmentally friendly and economic approach to produce highly active TiO2 photocatalyst.

Abstract:We present bulk synthesis of anatase titania atomic wires with uniform diameters of approximately ~4-5 AÂ¿ which are as thin as about two to three Ti-O bonds across. The synthesis was realized by a nonhydrolytic approach, which carefully controls the formation of a titanium-containing precursor from the reactions of titanium alkoxide and the subsequent growth of the TiO2 atomic wires with the assistance of surfactants.

Abstract:This work reports a new synthetic approach for single-phase TiO2 nanomaterials by solvothermal treatment of titanium tetrachloride in acetone at 80-110 degrees C. Small, uniform, and yet size-tunable (5-10 nm) anatase titania nanocrystallites were obtained using a low concentration of TiCl4 in acetone (i.e., at molar ratios of TiCl4/acetone <= 1 : 15) in the temperature range of 80-110 degrees C, while rutile nanofibers were synthesized using a high concentration of TiCl4 (e.g., TiCl4/acetone = 1: 10) at 110 degrees C. Abstract:Anatase-type TiO2 fine powders were synthesized under hydrothermal condition. The precursor was obtained via precipitation route using Ti(SO4)2. The characterization of the as-prepared sample was confirmed by TEM, XRD, UV-Vis and low temperature N2 adsorption measurements (BET). The photocatalytic activity was also investigated by the degradation of methyl orange solutions. The particles of the as-synthesized sample with narrow size distribution had an average diameter of about 24 nm. The specific BET surface area of the as-synthesized sample was about 56 m2 x g(-1), which is similar to the commercial TiO2 (P25). The prepared materials showed the similar photocatalytic activity when compared with the performance of commercial TiO2 (P25).

Abstract:A novel type of titanium precursor, ammonium-exchanged titanate nanowires, is used to hydrothermally synthesize nanosized TiO2 single crystals with well-defined facets. With additives of appropriate shape-capping reagents, octahedral, truncated octahedral, and spindle-like TiO2 nanocrystals have been obtained. We proposed that the transformation mechanism from ammonium-exchanged titanate nanowires to TiO2 may be a "dissolution-nucleation" process. Furthermore, the photocatalytic activities of anatase TiO2 nanocrystals with different facets exposed have been investigated.
