Abstract:A new system consisting of a copper(I) complex generated in situ from a tetradentate nitrogen ligand and CuI in combination with 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO) derivatives was successfully developed. The system was suitable for efficient and selective aerobic oxidation of primary benzyl and allyl alcohols with a wide range of functional groups to the corresponding aldehydes at room temperature. The best result was obtained with N,N’-dimethyl-N,N’-bis(2-pyridylmethyl)ethane-1,2-diamine as the ligand and 4-OH-TEMPO as a cocatalyst in CH3CN. In addition, high-resolution mass spectrometry, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, and electrochemical experiments were used to provide evidence of intermediates.

Abstract:A main obstacle in the rational development of heterogeneous catalysts is the difficulty in identifying active sites. Here we show metal/oxide interfacial sites are highly active for the oxidation of benzyl alcohol and other industrially important primary alcohols on a range of metals and oxides combinations. Scanning tunnelling microscopy together with density functional theory calculations on FeO/Pt(111) reveals that benzyl alcohol enriches preferentially at the oxygen-terminated FeO/Pt(111) interface and undergoes readily O-H and C-H dissociations with the aid of interfacial oxygen, which is also validated in the model study of Cu2O/Ag(111). We demonstrate that the interfacial effects are independent of metal or oxide sizes and the way by which the interfaces were constructed. It inspires us to inversely support nano-oxides on micro-metals to make the structure more stable against sintering while the number of active sites is not sacrificed. The catalyst lifetime, by taking the inverse design, is thereby significantly prolonged.

Abstract:Alcohol oxidation is an important class of reaction that is traditionally performed under harsh conditions and most often requires the use of organometallic compounds or transition metal complexes as catalysts. Here, we introduce a new electrochemical synthetic method, referred to as reductive oxidation, in which alcohol oxidation is initiated by the redox-mediated electrocatalytic reduction of peroxydisulfate to generate the highly oxidizing sulfate radical anion. Thus, and counter-intuitively, alcohol oxidation occurs as a result of an electrochemical reduction reaction. This approach provides a selective synthetic route for the oxidation of alcohols carried out under mild conditions to aldehydes, ketones, and carboxylic acids with up to 99% conversion yields. First-principles density functional theory calculations, ab initio molecular dynamics simulations, cyclic voltammetry, and finite difference simulations are presented that support and provide additional insights into the S2O82--mediated oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde.

Abstract:Selective oxidation of alcohols to aldehydes or ketones has been regarded as one of the most important oxidation reactions in the chemical industry. Establishing a green and mild synthesis method is the main purpose of this research. In this work, 2-chloroanthraquinone is used to selectively oxidize primary and secondary alcohols to corresponding carbonyl compounds under the driving of visible light, without additional heavy metals and auxiliary additives. Air or oxygen as the oxidant avoids the stoichiometric use of traditional oxidants, reduces waste release and toxicity, and makes the reaction system simple and easy to purify. The results show that the reaction has a moderate to excellent conversion and selectivity , and is suitable for a series of substrates, providing a new economic, environmentally friendly and sustainable way for the synthesis of benzyl oxygenates.
