Abstract:The high temperature ferromagnetism in Sr3YCo4O10+delta perovskite, whose origin has been the subject of a considerable debate, has been studied by neutron powder diffraction and synchrotron X-ray diffraction measurements. Oxygen vacancy ordering creates a complex pattern of zigzag stripes in the oxygen-deficient CoO4+delta layers, where the Co ions are found in three distinct coordinations. The symmetry of this unprecedented structural modulation, in conjunction with the existence of different Co spin states, provide a straightforward explanation for the appearance of ferrimagnetism. A model for the magnetic structure compatible with these structural features is proposed, based on the refinement of powder neutron data. The macroscopic moment as a function of temperature that can be calculated from the values of the ordered spins extracted from refinements, is in excellent agreement with bulk magnetization. Unlike previous models, a collinear G-type magnetic structure with uncompensated moments due to distinct spin-states of Co imposed by different coordination is found.

Ordered phase transformation and Cu doping effects in room-temperature ferromagnetic Sr3YCo4O10.5+ δ

Abstract:Sr3YCo4O10.5+δ (314-SYCO), with an unusual ordered structure and a high Curie temperature (Tc ≈ 335 K), is attracting increasing attention. Herein, to improve the electrical performance of 314-SYCO, Cu-doped Sr3YCo4-x Cu x O10.5+δ (x = 0-0.8) ceramics were prepared using a solid-state reaction method. Systematic research was conducted on both the ordered phase transformation and the effects of Cu doping on the microstructure, electrical transport characteristics, and magnetic properties. For x = 0-0.4, the (103) and (215) planes were observed and combined with Rietveld refinement results for the X-ray diffraction data, confirming the formation of ordered tetragonal Sr3YCo4-x Cu x O10.5+δ . This phase was formed with a mass gain of ∼0.8% and heat released at ∼1,042°C. With increasing Cu content, the concentration of hole carriers also increased, leading to a substantial reduction in electrical resistivity. The electrical resistivity decreased by 92-99% at 300 K. The polycrystalline materials have semiconducting behaviour with a three-dimensional Mott variable-range hopping mechanism. For the magnetic properties, a Hopkinson peak was observed at 319 K, and the Tc was approximately 321 K for x = 0. The magnetisation and Tc decreased with increasing Cu content, and a G-type antiferromagnetic-to-ferromagnetic phase transition occurred due to the spin state change for some Co3+ ions from high/intermediate spin to low/intermediate spin. These results lay the groundwork for refinement of the sintering procedure and doping parameters to enhance the performance of 314-SYCO in the context of current applications such as microwave absorbers and solid oxide fuel cell cathodes.

Abstract:In this work, dielectric and magnetic behaviors, as well as magnetodielectric (MD) effect of Yb-substituted yttrium iron garnet (Y3-xYbxFe5O12) ceramics, have been studied systematically. Three dielectric relaxations are detected from the temperature spectrums, which can be attributed to the charge carries hopping between Fe2+ and Fe3+, inhomogeneous structure, and conduction, respectively. All the samples exhibit ferrimagnetic behaviors at room temperature and the saturation magnetization (Ms) increases first and then decreases with increasing Yb-substitution. The variation of Ms can be viewed as a comprehensive effect of superexchange interaction of Fe1-O-Fe-2 and double exchange interaction between Fe2+ and Fe3+ ions. The room-temperature MD effect of Y3-xYbxFe5O12 ceramics measured at 15 kOe and 1 MHz are -1.11%, -1.33%, -2.04%, -1.48%, and -1.57%, for x = 0, 0.5, 1, 2, and 3, respectively. With the analysis of XPS spectra, the origin of enhanced MD effect has been investigated, and it is mainly caused by the response of local dipoles (Fe2+- Fe3+) under applied magnetic field. Abstract:Cobalt substitution effects in the single phase spin ladder compounds Sr14-xCaxCu24-yCoyO41 was studied. The crystal structure, the resistivity and the thermoelectric power change with various values y(Co) were researched. All lattice parameters of Sr14-xCaxCu24-yCoyO41 increase almost linearly with the increase in y(Co). T dependence of the electrical resistivity of all samples is semiconducting. The value of the resistivity increases with the increase of cobalt concentration. The resistivities can be fit by the thermal active equation rho = rho(0) exp(Delta/k(B)T) except for the sample of x=9, y=0. Through thermoelectric power measurements, we find that the sample of x=9, y=0 exhibit metallic behavior while the others exhibit semiconductive behavior. Cobalt substitution induces disorder and electron. Lattice constants increasing make the holes transfer from the better conductive spin ladder to the chain. Those lead to the increase of activation energy, resistivity, and thermoelectric power.

Abstract:The investigations on the structure, magnetic and transport properties were carried out for the double perovskite Sr2Fe1-xCoxMoO6 samples prepared by the solid state reaction method. It is found that the relationship between resistivity and temperature changes from a typical half-metal behavior to a semiconductor behavior, with the increasing substitution concentration x value of Co for Fe. The resistivity at room temperature increases from 3.9×10-5Ω·cm (for the x=0 sample) to 6.0×10-1Ω·cm (for the x=1.0 sample). The magnetic order in the sample changes from a ferrimagnetic to an antiferromagnetic and the magnetic transition temperature TN decreases with the increasing Co content x. The magnetoresistance effect is depressed by the Co partial substitution for Fe. The origin of magnetoresistance and the Co substitution effect were discussed in detail based on the analysis of electronic structure of Sr2Fe1-xCoxMoO6 system.
Designing Orbital and Charge Ordering Multiferroics by Superlattice Strategy and Strain Engineering

Abstract:Orbital ordering (OO) or charge ordering (CO) in e1g compounds like RMnO3 (R = rare-earth element), RNiO3, and CaFeO3 makes them attractive functional materials. Despite belonging to the e1g family, SrFeO3 is metallic and free from OO and CO, which may limit its technological potential. Here, through first-principles calculations, we propose a rational design of OO and CO insulating SrFeO3 by superlattice strategy and strain engineering. With a systematical investigation of the interplay among Jahn-Teller distortion related to OO, breathing distortion associated with CO, strain, octahedral rotations, and cation ordering, we reveal that cation ordering in SrFeO3/ABO3 superlattices not only is capable to stabilize Jahn-Teller and breathing distortions, but is also indispensable in triggering metal-insulator transition by the collaboration with Jahn-Teller or breathing distortion, leading to ferromagnetic insulating SrFeO3. Owing to the different sensitivity of Jahn-Teller and breathing distortions to strain, purposeful design of OO or CO phase and even as multiferroics coexisting ferro-electric and ferromagnetic orders can be realized by tuning the relative stability of CO and OO phases by strain engineering. The coupled charge, orbital, spin, and ferroelectricity degrees of freedom make SrFeO3/ABO3 superlattices appealing for desired applications.
Structure and Magnetic Properties of the Perovskite YCo0.5Fe0.5O3

Abstract:Y Co0.5Fe0.5O3, in a structure of perovskite, has been successfully prepared with citrate precursors at 950-1100 °C in air by the sol-gel method. The X-ray diffraction patterns show that the samples are orthorhombic within the space group Pnma, where the Co and Fe ions are disordered at the 4b crystallographic sites. The crystal structure refinement undertaken by the Rietveld method has shown that the distortion of Co(Fe)O6 octahedra are large, where the ratio of Co/Fe-O bonding length along a axis to that in the bc plane is about 1.07. Such a large crystal lattice distortion implies a strong lattice-magnetism coupling, which may be utilized in the magnetoelectric devices. Magnetic measurement indicates that the Y Co0.5Fe0.5O3 is antiferromagnetic but showing weak ferromagnetism. We find that Fe3+ ions are in high-spin states, while Co3+ ions are in low-spin states which do not contribute to the magnetism. Both Fe3+ and Co3+ ions are not Jahn-Teller activated although the lattice distortion is large.

Abstract:We investigated theoretically electronic and magnetic properties of the perovskite material SrCoO$_{3-\delta}$ with $\delta\leq 0.15$ using a projector-augmented plane-wave method and a Green's function method. This material is known from various experiments to be ferromagnetic with a Curie temperature of 260$\,$K to 305$\,$K and a magnetic moment of 1.5${\,\mu_\text{B}}$ to 3.0${\,\mu_\text{B}}$. Applying the magnetic force theorem as it is formulated within Green's function method, we calculated for SrCoO$_{3-\delta}$ the magnetic exchange parameters and estimated the Curie temperature. Including correlation effects by an effective $U$ parameter within the GGA$+U$ approach and verifying this by hybrid functional calculations, we obtained the Curie temperatures in dependence of the oxygen deficiency close to the experimental values.

Abstract:Polycrystalline samples of YSr2Cu2.75Mo0.25O7+delta with different oxygen contents are investigated by powder X-ray diffraction and selected area electron diffraction. The temperature dependence of resistivity and the oxygen content are determined. The air-sintered sample is tetragonal and semiconductive, while the O-2-sintered sample is orthorhombic and superconducting at 26 K. It is suggested that the structural variation originates from the (Cu(1), Mo)O-1+delta layers and the superconductivity is induced by the excess oxygen rather than charge redistribution between Cu(1) and Cu(2).

Abstract:The authors report the room-temperature ferromagnetism in the epitaxial thin films of 3% Co-doped Ba0.5Sr0.5TiO3 (CBSTO) grown by pulsed laser deposition. These films show the single phase character with Co dopants in the +2 state. More interestingly, ferromagnetic and ferroelectric transitions were observed at 570 and 150 K, respectively. The CBSTO films also show the exchange bias effect manifested by the negative shift and training effect of the hysteresis loops at 5 K. This work demonstrates that ferromagnetism can be induced in the ferroelectric materials, which is significant for shedding light on the mechanism of dopant induced ferromagnetism in insulators and applications. Abstract:We have prepared a series of polycrystalline samples La$_{0.5}$Sr$_{0.5}$CoO$_{3-\delta}$} with $0 < \delta \le 0.21$ and characterized their oxygen content, crystal structure, and magnetic properties. While the fully oxygenated samples are good ferromagnets, samples with larger $\delta$ values display increasingly broad magnetic transitions. The saturation magnetization at 5 K falls rapidly as $\delta$ increases. First principles electronic structure calculations provide insights into the magnetic behavior of the fully oxygenated compound, and the manner in which ferromagnetic ordering is affected by increasing oxygen non-stoichiometry.

Abstract:Cobaltates have rich spin-states and diverse properties. Using spin-state pictures and first-principles calculations, here we study the electronic structure and magnetism of the mixed-valent double perovskite YBaCo2O6. We find that YBaCo2O6 is in the formal intermediate-spin (IS) Co3+/low-spin (LS) Co4+ ground state. The hopping of e(g) electrons from IS-Co3+ to LS-Co(4+)via double exchange gives rise to ferromagnetic half-metallicity, which well accounts for recent experiments. The reduction of both magnetization and the Curie temperature by oxygen vacancies is discussed, aided by Monte Carlo simulations. We also explore several other possible spin-states and their interesting electronic/magnetic properties. Moreover, we predict that a volume expansion of more than 3% would tune YBaCo2O6 into the high-spin (HS) Co3+/LS Co4+ ferromagnetic state and simultaneously drive a metal-insulator transition. Therefore, spin-states are a useful parameter for tuning the material properties of cobaltates.

Abstract:Materials with room-temperature two-dimensional itinerant ferromagnetism enable ultracompact device density and quantum computing in next-generation nano-spintronics. Among numerous candidates, perovskite-based heterostructures have offered an excellent platform to manipulate spin-orbital-charge coupling, unveiling a series of emergent spin-dependent phenomena. In this work, we have fulfilled a robust room-temperature soft ferromagnetism together with a metallic characteristic based on a high quality SrRuO3-monolayer-based superlattice. Further examination on this short-range ferromagnetism has been carried out by synchrotron-related spectroscopy, where charge-transfer-induced antiferromagnetic coupling between partial Ru and Ti ions have been found. Although such local antiferromagnetic coupling would break long range ferromagnetic order, it simultaneously stabilize the localized intralayer ferromagnetic order in the SrRuO3 monolayers, which is confirmed by theoretical calculations. Our study not only represents a methodological advance of achieving fantastic magnetic properties in functional oxide monolayer, but is promising to unlock new opportunities for oxide-based spintronic devices toward room-temperature applications.

Abstract:We use density functional theory to calculate the structure, band-gap and magnetic properties of oxygen-deficient SrTi$_{1-x-y}$Fe$_x$Co$_y$O$_{3-\delta}$ with x = y = 0.125 and ${\delta}$ = (0,0.125,0.25). The valence and the high or low spin-states of the Co and Fe ions, as well as the lattice distortion and the band-gap, depend on the oxygen deficiency, the locations of the vacancies, and on the direction of the Fe-Co axis. A charge redistribution that resembles a self-regulatory response lies behind the valence spin-state changes. Ferromagnetism dominates, and both the magnetization and the band gap are greatest at ${\delta}$ = 0.125. This qualitatively mimics the previously reported magnetization measured for SrTiFeO$_{3-\delta}$, which was maximum at an intermediate deposition pressure of oxygen.

Room temperature ferromagnetism induced by high valence cation V$^{+5}$/V$^{+4}$ substitution in SrFeO$_{3-δ}$

Abstract:The structural and magnetic effects of non-magnetic vanadium (V) doping in helimagnetic SrFeO$_{3-\delta}$ (SFO) are investigated, focusing on up to 3% substitution at the Fe site. Structural analysis from X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy, supported by phonon mode calculations, reveals that pure SFO exists as a mixed tetragonal-orthorhombic phase, while V-doped samples exhibit an emerging cubic phase alongside tetragonal symmetry. Magnetic hysteresis (M-H) loops show notable ferromagnetic behavior within the antiferromagnetic matrix, persisting even at room temperature. Temperature-dependent magnetization measurements indicate a Neel temperature (TN ) shift from 70K to 55K, along with increased magnetization differences in field-cooled (FC) and zero field-cooled (ZFC) data, reflecting heightened magnetic frustration due to competing FM/AFM exchange interactions. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) analyses reveal a rise in Fe$^{3+}$ and V$^{5+}$ states, affecting oxygen vacancy distributions and corresponding structural shifts seen in XRD and Raman results. The multivalent Fe$^{3+}$/Fe$^{4+}$ and V$^{4+}$/V$^{5+}$ states enhance double-exchange (DE) and super-exchange (SE) interactions (Fe$^{3+}$-O-Fe$^{4+}$ and Fe$^{3+}$-O-V$^{5+}$), promoting ferromagnetism. Frequency-dependent magnetization studies display a subtle susceptibility peak shift, indicating spin-glass-like behavior in V-doped samples.

Abstract:The spin-states of cobalt based perovskite compounds depend sensitively on the valence state and local crystal environment of Co ions and the rich physical properties arise from strong coupling among charge, spin, and orbital degrees of freedom. While extensive studies have been carried out in the past, most of them concentrated on the isotropic compound LaCoO3. In this paper, using the unrestricted Hartree-Fock approximation and the real-space recursion method, we have investigated the competition of various magnetically ordered spin-states of anisotropic double-layered perovskite Sr2Y0.5Ca0.5Co2O7. The energy comparison among these states shows that the nearest-neighbor high-spin-intermediate-spin ferromagnetically ordered state is the relevant magnetic ground state of the compound. The magnetic structure and sizes of magnetic moments are consistent with the recent experimental observation.
Order-disorder effect of A-site and oxygen-vacancy on magnetic and transport properties of Y1/4Sr3/4CoO3-delta

Abstract:We have synthesized A-site ordered (AO)- and A-site disordered (AD)-Y1/4Sr3/4CoO3-delta (YSCO) with various oxygen deficiency delta, and have made a comparative study of the structural and physical properties. We have found that A-site (Y/Sr) ordering produces the unconventional oxygen-vacancy ordered (OO) structure, and that the magnetic and transport properties of both AO- and AD-YSCO strongly depend on the oxygen-vacancy (or excess oxygen) ordering pattern. AO-YSCO with a stoichiometric delta of 0.5 has the unconventional OO structure reflecting Y/Sr ordering pattern. With decreasing delta from 0.5, the overall averaged OO structure is essentially unchanged except for an increase of occupancy ratio for the oxygen-vacant sites. At delta = 0.34, excess oxygen atoms are ordered to form a novel superstructure, which is significant for the room-temperature ferromagnetism of AO-YSCO. In AD-YSCO, on the other hand, the quite different OO structure, which is of a brownmillerite-type, is found only in the vicinity of delta = 0.5.

Abstract:The Laves phase compound, YCo2, is a well-known exchange-enahnced Pauli paramagnet. We report here that, in the nanocrystalline form, this compound interestingly is an itinerant ferromagnet at room temperature with a low coercive-field. The magnitude of the saturation moment (about 1 Bohr-magneton per formula unit) is large enough to infer that the ferromagnetism is not a surface phenomenon in these nanocrystallites. Since these ferromagnetic nanocrystallines are easy to synthesize with a stable form in air, one can explore applications, particularly where hysteresis is a disadvantage.

Abstract:Cobaltates have rich spin-states and diverse properties. Using spin-state pictures and firstprinciples calculations, here we study the electronic structure and magnetism of the mixed-valent double perovskite YBaCo2O6. We find that YBaCo2O6 is in the formal intermediate-spin (IS) Co3+/low-spin (LS) Co4+ ground state. The hopping of eg electron from IS-Co3+ to LS-Co4+ via double exchange gives rise to a ferromagnetic half-metallicity, which well accounts for the recent experiments. The reduction of both magnetization and Curie temperature by oxygen vacancies is discussed, aided with Monte Carlo simulations. We also explore several other possible spin-states and their interesting electronic/magnetic properties. Moreover, we predict that a volume expansion more than 3% would tune YBaCo2O6 into the high-spin (HS) Co3+/LS Co4+ ferromagnetic state and simultaneously drive a metal-insulator transition. Therefore, spin-states are a useful parameter for tuning the material properties of cobaltates.
