Abstract:Further progress in the field of heterogeneous catalysis depends on our knowledge of the nature and behavior of surface sites on solid catalysts and of the mechanisms of chemical reactions catalyzed by these materials. In the past decades, solid-state NMR spectroscopy has been developed to an important tool for routine characterization of solid catalysts. The present work gives a review on experimental approaches and applications of solid-state NMR spectroscopy for investigating Brønsted and Lewis sites on solid acids. Studies focusing on the generation of surface sites via post-synthesis modification routes of microporous and mesoporous materials support the development of new and the improvement of existing catalyst systems. High-temperature and flow techniques of in situ solid-state NMR spectroscopy allow a deeper insight into the mechanisms of heterogeneously catalyzed reactions and open the way for studying the activity of acidic surface sites. They help to clarify the activation of reactants on Brønsted and Lewis acid sites and improve our understanding of mechanisms affecting the selectivity of acid-catalyzed reactions.

Here we review some research works carried out in our laboratory, including studies on the acidity of metal oxides under different water contents, the acidity and basicity characterization of metal oxides by using acidic and basic probe molecules simultaneously. The investigations extend solid-state NMR technique in qualitative and quantitative studies on the acidity and basicity of solid catalysts.

Abstract:Solid acid catalysts are used extensively in various advanced chemical and petrochemical processes. Their catalytic performance (namely, activity, selectivity, and reaction pathway) mostly depends on their acid properties, such as type (Brønsted versus Lewis), location, concentration, and strength, as well as the spatial correlations of their acid sites. Among the diverse methods available for acidity characterization, solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (SSNMR) techniques have been recognized as the most valuable and reliable tool, especially in conjunction with suitable probe molecules that possess observable nuclei with desirable properties. Taking 31P probe molecules as an example, both trimethylphosphine (TMP) and trimethylphosphine oxide (TMPO) adsorb preferentially to the acid sites on solid catalysts and thus are capable of providing qualitative and quantitative information for both Brønsted and Lewis acid sites. This protocol describes procedures for (i) the pretreatment of typical solid acid catalysts, (ii) adoption and adsorption of various 31P probe molecules, (iii) considerations for one- and two-dimensional (1D and 2D, respectively) NMR acquisition, (iv) relevant data analysis and spectral assignment, and (v) methodology for NMR mapping with the assistance of theoretical calculations. Users familiar with SSNMR experiments can complete 31P–1H heteronuclear correlation (HETCOR), 31P–31P proton–driven spin diffusion (PDSD), and double-quantum (DQ) homonuclear correlation with this protocol within 2–3 d, depending on the complexity and the accessible acid sites of the solid acid samples.

Abstract:Solid‐state NMR combined with DNP, DFT calculations, and gas‐phase NMR has emerged as an efficient tool to investigate the structure and reactivity of supported heterogeneous catalysts. This review presents some of the latest discoveries in this field showing a number of heterogeneous catalysts ranging from mono‐ and binuclear catalysts to catalytic nanoparticles and gives a short outlook into future developments. Recent advances in solid‐state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, combined with dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP), quantum chemical DFT calculations, and gas‐phase NMR spectroscopy investigating the structure and reactivity of heterogeneous catalysts are reviewed. The investigated catalysts range from classical mononuclear catalysts, like immobilized derivates of Wilkinson's catalysts over binuclear catalysts such as the dirhodium paddlewheel catalyst to catalytic nanoparticles, employing various support materials, such as mesoporous silica gels, coordination polymers, and biomaterials such as cellulose.

Abstract:Acid catalysis in heterogeneous systems such as metal oxides and porous zeolites has been widely involved in various catalytic processes for chemical and petrochemical industries. In acid-catalyzed reactions, the performance (e.g., activity and selectivity) is closely associated with the acidic features of the catalysts, viz., type (Lewis vs Brønsted acidity), distribution (external vs internal surface), strength (strong vs weak), concentration (amount), and spatial interactions of acidic sites. The characterization of local structure and acidic properties of these active sites has important implications for understanding the reaction mechanism and the practical catalytic applications of acidic catalysts. Among diverse acidity characterization approaches, the solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (SSNMR) technique with suitable probe molecules has been recognized as a reliable and versatile tool. Such a probe-assisted SSNMR approach could provide qualitative (type, distribution, and spatial interactions) and quantitative (strength and concentration) information on each acidic site. This Account aims to integrate our recent important findings in determining the structures and acidic characteristics of some typical metal oxide and zeolite catalysts by using the probe-assisted SSNMR technique, as well as clarifying the continuously evolving process of each discrete acidic site under hydrothermal or chemical treatments even at the molecular level with multiscale theoretical simulations.More specifically, we will describe herein the development and applications of the probe-assisted SSNMR methods, such as trimethylphosphine (TMP) and acetonitrile-d3 (CD3CN) in conjunction with advanced two-dimensional (2D) homo- and heteronuclear correlation spectroscopy, for characterizing the structures and properties of acidic sites in varied solid catalysts. Moreover, relevant information regarding the surface fingerprinting of various facets on crystalline metal oxide nanoparticles and active centers inside porous zeolites, the mapping of relevant spatial interactions, and the verification of structure-activity correlation were investigated as well. Relevant discussions are mainly based on the recent NMR experiments of our collaborating research groups, including (i) determining the acidic characterization with probe-assisted SSNMR approaches, (ii) mapping various active centers (or crystalline facets), and (iii) revealing their influence on catalytic performance of solid acid catalyst systems. It is anticipated that this information may provide more in-depth insights toward our fundamental understanding of solid acid catalysis.

Abstract:This chapter is a review of techniques and applications of solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy for investigations of solid catalysts, with a strong emphasis on investigations of catalysts in the functioning state. The techniques allow investigations of both the chemical reactions as well as changes in the catalysts taking place inside the NMR spectrometer. The experimental techniques are suitable for magic-angle spinning (MAS) NMR spectroscopy under batch reaction conditions, for example, with a sample of catalyst powder in a sealed glass ampoule or a gas-tight MAS NMR rotor, or under flow conditions, for example, with the catalyst particles in an MAS NMR rotor reactor. The former technique has the advantage of low cost and commercially accessible equipment, and the latter technique allows measurements under conditions close to those of industrial processes. Representative applications described in this review include investigations of the fate of isotopic labels allowing the indirect characterization of the nature of transition states and reaction pathways by isotope scrambling and the determination of activation energies of the reactions in the pathways. Other examples include investigations of organic deposits, surface complexes, and reaction intermediates formed in the pores of zeolite catalysts under continuous- and stopped-flow reaction conditions. Further applications include investigations of changes in the local structure of framework atoms and surface sites in microporous catalysts resulting from adsorption and desorption of probe molecules and reactants.

Abstract:In situ solid-state NMR is a well-established tool for investigations of the structures of the adsorbed reactants, intermediates and products on the surface of solid catalysts. The techniques allow identifications of both the active sites such as acidic sites and reaction processes after introduction of adsorbates and reactants inside an NMR rotor under magic angle spinning (MAS). The in situ solid-state NMR studies of the reactions can be achieved in two ways, i.e. under batch-like or continuous-flow conditions. The former technique is low cost and accessible to the commercial instrument while the latter one is close to the real catalytic reactions on the solids. This critical review describes the research progress on the in situ solid-state NMR techniques and the applications in heterogeneous catalysis under batch-like and continuous-flow conditions in recent years. Some typical probe molecules are summarized here to detect the Brønsted and Lewis acidic sites by MAS NMR. The catalytic reactions discussed in this review include methane aromatization, olefin selective oxidation and olefin metathesis on the metal oxide-containing zeolites. With combining the in situ MAS NMR spectroscopy and the density functional theoretical (DFT) calculations, the intermediates on the catalyst can be identified, and the reaction mechanism is revealed. Reaction kinetic analysis in the nanospace instead of in the bulk state can also be performed by employing laser-enhanced MAS NMR techniques in the in situ flow mode (163 references).
Spies Within Metal-Organic Frameworks: Investigating Metal Centers Using Solid-State Nmr

Abstract:Structural characterization of metalorganic frameworks (MOFs) is crucial, since an understanding of the relationship between the macroscopic properties of these industrially relevant materials and their molecular-level structures allows for the development of new applications and improvements in current performance. In many MOFs, the incorporated metal centers dictate the short- and long-range structure and porosity of the material. Here we demonstrate that solid-state NMR (SSNMR) spectroscopy targeting NMR-active metal centers at natural abundance, in concert with ab initio density functional theory (DFT) calculations and X-ray diffraction (XRD), is a powerful tool for elucidating the molecular-level structure of MOFs. Zr-91 SSNMR experiments on MIL-140A are paired with DFT calculations and geometry optimizations in order to detect inaccuracies in the reported powder XRD crystal structure. In-115 and La-139 SSNMR experiments on sets of related MOFs at two different magnetic fields illustrate the sensitivity of the In-115/La-139 electric field gradient tensors to subtle differences in coordination, bond length distribution, and ligand geometry about the metal center. Ti-47/49 SSNMR experiments reflect the presence or absence of guest solvent in MIL-125(Ti), and when combined with DFT calculations, these SSNMR experiments permit the study of local hydroxyl group configurations within the MOF channels. Zn-67 SSNMR experiments and DFT calculations are also used to explore the geometry near Zn within a set of four MOFs as well as local disordering caused by distributions of different linkers around the metal. SSNMR spectroscopy of metal centers offers an impressive addition to the arsenal of techniques for MOF characterization and is particularly useful in cases where XRD information may be ambiguous, incomplete, or unavailable.

Abstract:Research on the structure and properties,especially the solid acidity and catalytic nature,of molybdenum oxide supported on tin oxide,by use of solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance(SSNMR) spectroscopy and density functional theory(DFT) calculation,were performed.As demonstrated by solid-state NMR experiments,Brnsted as well as Lewis acid sites are created in our MoO3/SnO2 sample.Overall acid is stronger than those of zeolites,e.g.,HY and HZSM-5,in strength,though concentration of acid sites is relatively lower.The DFT computational 13C chemical shift for acetone absorbed on MoO3/SnO2 is in well agreement with the experimental value,which confirms the local structure of —Mo—(OH)—Sn— for Brnsted acid site.Reducibility of this supported metal oxide is also demonstrated by solid-state NMR experiments and active oxidation center of this catalyst is proposed as well.

Abstract:Molecular-level understanding of the acid/base properties of heterogeneous catalysts requires the development of selective spectroscopic probes to establish structure-activity relationships. In this work we show that substituting the surface protons in oxide supports by isolobal N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) Ag cations and measuring their 109Ag nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) signatures enables to probe the speciation and to evaluate the corresponding Brønsted acidity of the substituted OH surface sites. Specifically, a series of silver N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) Ag(I) complexes of general formula [(NHC)AgX] are synthesized and characterized, showing that the 109Ag NMR chemical shift of the series correlates with the Brønsted acidity of the conjugate acid of X- (i.e., HX), thus establishing an acidity scale based on 109Ag NMR chemical shift. The methodology is then used to evaluate the Brønsted acidity of the OH sites of representative oxide materials using Dynamic Nuclear Polarization (DNP-)enhanced solid-state NMR spectroscopy.

Abstract:Given their excellent reusability and environmental friendliness, solid acid catalysts have drawn considerable attention in acid-catalyzed reactions. However, the rational design and synthesis of solid acid catalysts with abundant Brønsted acid sites remains a challenge. In this paper, KIT-6, Zr-KIT-6, Mo-KIT-6, and ZrMo-KIT-6 solid acid catalysts are designed and synthesized. The textural properties, chemical bonds, and acidic properties of these catalysts are explored. Theoretical calculations are conducted to explore the formation mechanism of Brønsted acid sites. The theoretical trend of acidity is consistent with the experimental result of acidity and further demonstrates that the synergistic effect of Zr and Mo species improves the formation of Brønsted acid sites. The as-obtained ZrMo-KIT-6 solid acid catalysts are employed in Friedel-Crafts benzylation reaction, and the outstanding catalytic performance of the ZrMo-KIT-6 catalyst indicates that it is an excellent Brønsted solid acid catalyst.

Abstract:Metal-containing zeolite catalysts have found a wide range of applications in heterogeneous catalysis. To understand the nature of metal active sites and the reaction mechanism over such catalysts is of great importance for the establishment of structure-activity relationship. The advanced solid-state NMR (SSNMR) spectroscopy is robust in the study of zeolites and zeolite-catalyzed reactions. In this review, we summarize recent developments and applications of SSNMR for exploring the structure and property of active sites in metal-containing zeolites. Moreover, detailed information on host-guest interactions in the relevant zeolite catalysis obtained by SSNMR is also discussed. Finally, we highlight the mechanistic understanding of catalytic reactions on metal-containing zeolites based on the observation of key surface species and active intermediates.
