Abstract:Over the last 15–20 years a wide range of new porous catalytic materials has been discovered in the wake of major developments in mesostructured materials and hybrid porous solids such as metal organic frameworks (MOFs). These two developments have both enormous potential to produce catalyst supports and solids. It may be argued that most existing industrial catalysts may be revisited for improvement taking advantage of the novel materials. In both cases new techniques allow controlling not only specific surface area and pore volume but even more importantly pore size distribution and therefore the diffusional properties of reactants and products. These are especially critical when dealing with large molecule reactants as frequently encountered and converting natural products. Both subfields are indeed yielding on a regular basis creative original materials which generate new catalysts, sometimes unexpectedly rejuvenating mature catalytic technologies. This special column is intended to illustrate these current efforts which for a large part are occurring in the Chinese catalysis community. The editors come from Canada and China, and the authors involve well–known researchers from Canada, Sweden, Korea, Taiwan Province and Mainland China. This column contains two review articles, one communication and seven original research articles.

Abstract:Catalysis plays an important role in the modern chemical industry, and developing catalyst with high efficiency is one of the important targets in catalysis research. Due to the outstanding activity of those catalysts with strong metal-support interactions ( SMSI), SMSI has become an important scientific topic in catalysis research. The SMSI phenomenon involves the encapsulation of the metal nanoparticles ( NPs) by support, resulting in the improved stabilization of NPs, and the different catalytic performances due to the new interaction between NPs and the support. Currently, a great number of catalysts with SMSI have been designed and partially applied, also there are considerable literatures focusing on SMSI of supported catalysts, especially those using metal oxide for support. However due to the complexity, the nature of SMSI and the catalytic mechanism of SMSI deserve further study, and the argument about the driving force of SMSI formation still exists. This review summarizes the recent progress, effect, and the regulation of SMSI, hopefully providing the understanding of SMSI from the perspective of condensed matter chemistry, and a new strategy of catalyst design.
Towards a library of atomically dispersed catalysts

Abstract:Atomically dispersed catalysts (ADCs) have emerged as a rising star of new materials, exhibiting remarkable catalytic efficiency, selectivity and recyclability. However, little is known about the atomic-scale mechanisms leading to the generic synthesis of fully exposed metals, the feasibility of tailoring metal's coordination environments and the thermal robustness. Here we demonstrate the strong metal-support interactions (SMSI) as one of the key factors to universally construct a series of atomically dispersed single metals and synergetic bimetals for high-performance catalysts. The SMSI is realized through the anchoring effects of hybrid sp2- and sp3-carbons on the surface of () support. Such SMSI assures the effective tuning of metal's coordination numbers by means of either controlling mass loading or introducing complementary species. Furthermore, the impressive thermal stability of Pt-Sn catalyst as well as the failure route are revealed by atomic-resolution in-situ observations. This work not only paves the way towards a library of highly tunable and stable ADCs, but also sheds light on the fundamental regulating principles for their industrial applications.

Abstract:Single-atom catalysts (SACs), in which the metal active sites are isolated on the support and stabilized by coordinated atoms such as oxygen, nitrogen, sulfur, etc., represent the maximum usage efficiency of the metal atoms. Benefiting from the recent progress in synthetic strategies, characterization methods, and computational models, many SACs that deliver an impressive catalytic performance for a variety of reactions have been developed. The catalytic selectivity and activity are critical issues that need to be optimized and augmented in the areas of nanotechnology and biomedicine. This review summarizes some recent experimental and theoretical progress aimed at clarifying the structure of SACs and how they influence the catalytic performance. The examples described here elaborate on the utility of SACs and highlight the strengths of these catalysts in the applications of biomedicine, environmental protection, and energy conversion. Finally, some current challenges and future perspectives for SACs are also discussed.Some recent experimental and theoretical progress is summarized, aimed at clarifying the structure of single-atom catalysts and how they influence the catalytic performance.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.
