Abstract:Four photochromic diarylethenes with different spectra in. open and closed form were synthesized simultaneously. Irradiation of the open, form with UV light results in essentially quantitative photocyclization to the closed form. The compounds show attractive optical properties and are expected to be used in optical storage and photoswitch.

Abstract:Four novel photochromic dithienylethenes compounds, 1,2-bis[2-methyl-5(p-fluorophenyl)-3-thienyl]perfluorocyclo-pentene (1a), 1, 2-bis[2-methyl-5(p-ethox yphenyl)-3-thienyl]perfluorocyclopentene (2a), 1,2-bis[2-methyl-5(p-N,N-dimethylaminophenyl)- 3 -thienyl]perfluorocyclopentene (3a) and 1,2-bis(2-methyl-5-naphthalene-3-thienyl)perfluorocyclopentene (4a) were synthesized. Their optoelectronic properties, such as photochromism in solution as well as in PMMA amorphous, fluorescence and electrochemistry properties were systematically investigated. These dithienylethenes have shown good photochromic behavior both in solution and in PMMA amorphous film. All of them exhibited relatively strong fluorescence. With the increase of their concentration in a THF solution, their fluorescence spectra showed a bathochromic shift. The irreversible anodic oxidation of la, 3a and 4a occurred when performing cyclic voltammetry tests. Moreover, dithienylethene la showed remarkable multi-color electrochromic properties during the anodic polarization. In addition, photo-mode multi-step optical storage using 2a and 3a as recording medium was performed successfully.

Abstract:A novel N-coumarin derivative, namely 9,10-[di-p-(7-diethylamino-coumarin-3-yl) thiopheneyl]anthracene ((CTh)2A), containing anthracene as the core and 3-thiophene N-coumarin as the substituent was synthesized, and its structure was confirmed by 1H NMR and IR spectroscopies. The optical, electrochemical and thermal properties were investigated. Thermogravimetric analysis and PL spectra reveal the high thermal and good photoluminescence characteristics. The coumarin derivative exhibits blue photoluminescence with high fluorescence quantum yield in solution (up to 40%). The results show that the derivative would serve as promising organic light-emitting diode luminescent material.

Abstract:The title compound, C19H16F6S4, is a new asymmetric photochromic diaryl-ethene which contains 3-thienyl substituents. The distance between the two reactive C atoms in the molecule is 3.548 (3) angstrom. The dihedral angles between the central cyclo-pentene ring and two thiophene rings are 45.7 (1) and 44.5 (1)degrees.

Abstract:A fluorene derivative having two diarylethene units at the 9,9'-positions was synthesized, and the photochromic behavior was examined in solution. Upon irradiation with UV (240nm), the solution of the diarylethene dimer turned yellow. It can returned to ring-open form upon irradiation with visible light (405nm). Two diarylethene chromophores are connected to the fluorene without π-conjugation between them in the dimer. Its synthesis can be performed on a large scale from cheap commercial products and no expensive drugs were concerned in the synthetic route.

Abstract:4-Bromothiophene-2-carbaldehyde was reacted with benzyl cyanide to prepare (Z)-3-(4-bromothiophen-2-yl)-2-phenylacrylonitrile which was cross-coupled with various arylboronic acids under Pd(PPh(3))(4) catalysis to afford a series of novel fluorescent aryl-substituted thiophene derivatives. These compounds are one of the most promising functional organic light-emitting diode materials. The UV-Vis absorption and photoluminescent spectra of these compounds in CH(2)Cl(2) were investigated.

Abstract:The title compound, C27H18F6S2, a novel photochromic hybrid diarylethene derivative containing 2- and 3-thienyl substituents, is one of the most promising photochromic candidates with shorter wavelength for optical storage and other optoelectronic devices. In the crystal structure, the molecule adopts a photoactive antiparallel conformation. The distance between the two reactive C atoms, i.e. the ring C atoms to which the methyl groups are attached, is 3.430 (4) Å. The dihedral angles between the thienyl and adjacent phenyl rings are 26.8 (2) and 33.98 (9)°.

Abstract:A series of bisthienylethenes containing imidazole and imidazolium derivatives have been prepared and the products have been characterized by means of NMR and MS. Their photochromic and fluorescent switch properties have been investigated by UV–vis absorption spectra and fluorescence spectra. The fluorescent emissions of these kinds of photochromic compounds can be simply modulated by varying the imidazole groups, which shows that these compounds may have potential application in the design of fluorescent photochromic materials.

Abstract:A new unsymmetrical photochromic diarylethene, 1-{2-methyl-5-[5-(2,3,5-trihydroxyl-beta-D-xylosyl)-3-(1,2,3-triazolyl)]methylene-3-thienyl}-2- [2-methyl-5-(4-methoxylphenyl)methyl-3-thienyl] perfluorocyclopentene (1a), was synthesized, and its photochromic properties were investigated in detail. The compound exhibited good photochromism both in acetonitrile solution and in PMMA film with alternating irradiation by UV/vis light, and the maxima absorption of its closed-ring isomer 1b are 556 and 560 nm, respectively. There almost no fluorescence switches of la in acetonitrile solution and PMMA amorphous film. The diarylethene la has promising application for photo-switching, which can use for data storage.

Abstract:A new family of organic semiconducting materials (1-4) integrating the structural components of thiophene and fluorene into a single molecular entity was synthesized and characterized. Optical and electrochemical properties of these previously unknown 4,9-dihydro-s-indaceno[1,2-b:5,6-b ']dithiophene-4,9-dione derivatives were studied in detail. These materials possess unique optical properties with the longest wavelength absorption maxima around 500-800 nm, which gradually reached a saturation limit with the total number of thiophene units approaching eight. They also display dramatic change in the redox properties with increasing conjugation chain lengths. A thin film of oligomer 3 prepared by a solution-casting method showed a well-ordered solid-state structure according to X-ray diffraction analysis.

Abstract:A new unsymmetrical photochromic diarylethene 1-(2,5-dimethyl-3-thiazolyl)-2-[2-methyl-5-phenyl-(4-vinyl)-3-thiophene] perfluorocyclopentene (1o) was designed and constructed successfully. And its photochromic reactivity, HPLC, kinetics were also investigated systematically. Upon alternating irradiation with UV and visible light in solution, this compound exhibited reversible photochromism, undergoing reversible cyclization and cycloreversion reactions. Diarylethene 1 changed the color from colorless to orange, in which absorption maxima were observed at 596 nm in acetonitrile. What is more, the photoconversion ratio of 1 is 37%.

Abstract:Three symmetrical and unsymmetrical trans -dithienylethenes functionalized with pyridines and fluorenes have been synthesized by a facile one-pot procedure, and their characteristics and photochromism were investigated. Their fluorescent intensity was efficiently regulated by a photochromic switch using alternative irradiation with UV light and visible light. Moreover, by protonation and complexation, the pyridyl-substituted compounds also showed excellent photoswitching properties with distinguishable color changes. These characteristics are expected to be applicable to potential multi-addressable photoswitch and erasable optical data processing technologies.

Abstract:An unsymmetrical photochromic diarylethene which called 1-[2-methyl-5-(3-cyanophenyl)-3-thienyl]-2-[2-methyl-5-(4-pentylphenyl)-3-thienyl]perfluorocyclopentene (1a) was synthesized and its properties such as photochromism and fluorescence were investigated in detail.
