Abstract:Pure-phase flower-like CuO porous microspheres with a sheet-like subunit-assembled micro/nano structure are prepared by a facile "alkali-oxidizing solution etching assisted crystallization based on microscale Cu particles'' route, which manifest greatly enhanced Li storage properties: the initial discharge capacity of similar to 1220 mAh g(-1) and reversible capacity of similar to 800 mAh g(-1) at a current density of 50 mA g(-1). Even cycled at a current density of 400 mA g(-1), they still deliver stable capacity with a comparable value of 666 mAh g(-1) after 200 cycles.

Abstract:Phase-pure Cu4O3 microspheres were synthesized for the first time via a facile solvothermal method, using Cu(NO3)(2)center dot 3H(2)O as the precursor. A formation mechanism was proposed based on the observation of a series of reaction intermediates. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, temperature-programmed reduction and oxidation, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and nitrogen adsorption. It was found that the composition of the prepared products were highly dependent on the synthesis conditions, particularly the hydrate water content in the copper precursor of Cu(NO3)(2). Pure Cu4O3 microspheres with a diameter of 2-10 mu m could be obtained via the symproportionation reaction (2CuO + Cu2O -> Cu4O3), which was regarded not being feasible in aqueous media under mild synthesis conditions. The electrochemical properties of the Cu4O3 microspheres as anode materials for Li-ion batteries were also investigated. Compared to the simple physical mixture of CuO and Cu2O with an equivalent atomic ratio of 2:1, the as-prepared Cu4O3 exhibited unique lithium storage behaviors at a low voltage range and superior electrochemical performances as an anode material for Li-ion batteries. The successful preparation of pure Cu4O3 material could provide opportunities to further explore its physicochemical properties and potential applications.

Abstract:A facile, ionic liquid-assisted route was developed to synthesize hierarchical CuS flower-like submicrospheres at 80°C for 24 h. The method was based on a reaction between CuCl2 and thioacetamide (TAA) in aqueous solution with using ionic liquid 1-n-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([BMIM]Cl) as an assisted agent. The chemical composition, morphology and size of CuS product were characterized by XRD, SEM and TEM. The result shows that the as-prepared CuS consists of flowery spheres with a diameter of 0·6 ∼ 1·0 μm, and these submicrospheres are, in fact, built by numerous nanoflakes with a thickness of 10 ∼ 20 nm. The optical property of CuS product was examined by UV-Vis. In general, we suggested an ecologically and environmentally friendly route for the syntheses of hierarchical metal chalcogenides structures in this paper.

Abstract:Leaf-like Cu(OH)2 single crystals were synthesized via the controlled emulsion interface method using Span80 (sorbitan monooleate) as the stabilizer of the emulsion system. CuO products with nanopores could be simply obtained by the dehydration of Cu(OH)2, while maintaining the strip-shaped architecture. The phase structures and morphologies were measured by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Experimental results showed that Cu(OH)2 microleaves were single crystals and the growth direction seemed to be in [111] crystal plane of the orthorhombic Cu(OH)2. The formation of the nanopores should be attributed to the water loss of the transformation from Cu(OH)2 to CuO. The formation process of Cu(OH)2 was investigated by taking TEM images at different stages of the reaction. The formed nanoparticles began to rearrange to form nanorods and microleaves possibly via edge-by-edge and side-by-side oriented-attachments because of the formation of larger crystals greatly reducing the interfacial energy. Besides, CuO microarchitectures exhibit blue shifts in UV-Vis spectra and possess larger band gaps compared with those of bulk crystals.

Abstract:A time- and energy-saving solution-based chemical precipitation method was developed to synthesize leaf-like CuO nanostructures. The morphology and size of the leaf-like CuO nanostructures could be simply manipulated by controlling the type and concentration of precursors, and the oriented attachment mechanism is responsible for the formation of leaf-like shape. With the concurrent reduction reaction and at appropriate concentration, CuO/Ag microspheres could be prepared and the growth mechanism is proposed. These two structures could serve as effective photocatalyst for the degradation of rhodamine B under visible light irradiation in the presence of hydrogen peroxide. Moreover, compared to pure CuO nanostructures, the photodecomposition activity of CuO/Ag microspheres increases by 42.9% due to plasmon- enhanced light absorption.

Abstract:Cu2O@Cu sub-microspheres composites with a narrow particle size distribution from 300 to 500 nm was successfully fabricated by one-step synthesis through the direct thermal decomposition of copper nitrate (Cu(NO3)(2)) in octadecylamine (ODA) solvent. As anode materials for lithium ion batteries, the Cu2O@Cu composites obviously possess high specific capacity, excellent cyclic stability and rate capability. The coulombic efficiency is about 84% in the 1 st cycle and increases significantly up to 97.8% during successive cycles at various current densities. Even under a high current density of 500 mAg(-1), the discharge capacity of Cu2O@Cu composites remains up to 200 mAh g(-1). The excellent electrochemical properties are ascribed to the synergistic effect between high electronic conductivity and volume-buffering capacity of metallic copper composited with Cu2O. Abstract:Hierarchical CuO architectures and monodisperse CuO nanoplates are synthesized via a hydrothermal method with the assistance of ionic liquid 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([Bmim]Cl). The products are characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM, HRTEM, BET, and XPS, and the results indicate that the CuO architectures are composed of nanosheets with exposed (001) facets and the CuO nanoplates are single crystals enclosed by (200) facets. More specially, it is found that [Bmim]Cl serves as an effective template for the synthesis of CuO nanoplates by adsorbing on the (200) planes of monoclinic CuO. When evaluated as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries, CuO architectures possess higher discharge capacity, better cycling stability, and better rate capability than CuO nanoplates. The initial discharge capacity of CuO architectures is 1096 mAh g(-1) at a rate of 0.5 C, whereas CuO nanoplates exhibit a lower capacity of 878.4 mAh g(-1). Moreover, after 50 cycles, CuO architectures and CuO nanoplates can deliver discharge capacities of 465.6 and 281.6 mAh g(-1), respectively. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Nanostructured CuO films with flower-like architectures were fabricated by immersing copper foils in an aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide and sodium dodecylsulfate, and subsequent heat treatment at low temperature. The as-prepared CuO films exhibited not only higher reversible capacity but also better rate capability than those of network-like counterpart as negative-electrodes of lithium ion batteries. The effect of surface morphology on the electrochemical performance of the CuO electrodes was discussed. It was confirmed that the unique flower-like structures are mainly responsible for the difference in electrochemical performance between the two kinds of electrodes. The result of this study provides an attractive electrode with high energy-density for lithium ion batteries via a simple and green procedure.

Abstract:Fluffy nanobelt-tangled spheroids of copper oxide were synthesized by a simple zinc-involved sacrificial-template-assisted wet-chemical method at room temperature. Their structures were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. The possible growth mechanism of the spheroids is discussed in this paper. For potential application in lithium-ion batteries, an electrode made of the copper oxide spheroids shows excellent electrochemical cycling performance and high rate capability. Abstract:We developed a facile electrochemical charge-discharge method to synthesize single-crystalline Cu nanoparticles with different morphologies by using a Li-driven electrochemical reduction process. Three-dimensional reticular Li2O/Cu2O composite thin films were fabricated on both Ni foam substrates and Cu foil substrates using the electrostatic spray deposition (ESD) technique. Cu nanospheres (on Ni foam substrate) and pyramid-like Cu particles (on Cu foil substrate) can be successfully produced with a high yield by fully discharging the assembly of three-dimensional reticular Li2O-Cu2O/Li electrochemical cells. It was demonstrated that the shape and size of copper nanoparticles could be controlled systematically by adjusting cycle numbers and the electrode substrate materials. In addition, a mechanistic consideration of the size control and shape formation is briefly discussed.

Abstract:A CuO nanostructure was prepared on copper plate by a simple electrochemical etching and a subsequent heat treatment instead of the commonly used solution-immersion method. The architecture was used as anode of lithium ion batteries without any conductive binder. Excellent rate capability and improved cyclability were obtained with a specific capacity of 740mAh/g upto 50 cycles at a rate of 100mA/g. The improved performance can be attributed to the quasi-1-dimensional nanostructure prepared directly on the current-collecting copper plate, which offers good strain accommodation, short electron/lithium ion transport path and excellent electrical contact between active material and current-collector.

Abstract:We report the preparation of high surface area hedgehog-like CuO microspheres by a wet-chemical method and their application in Li-ion batteries used as anode materials. The samples were characterized by Nitrogen adsorption, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, temperature-programmed reduction and thermogravimetric analysis. The synthesized hedgehog-like CuO microspheres with a size of 1-3 um possessed a high surface area of 103.5 -157.4 m(2) g(-1) and an average crystal size of 7-9 nm. When used as anode materials, they showed an initial discharge and charge capacity of 1294.6 and 647.6 mAh g(-1), respectively, much higher than the corresponding values of the low surface area CuO microspheres, which are 967.1 and 382.6 mAh g(-1) respectively. After calcination at 300 and 600 degrees C, the morphology of hedgehog-like CuO microspheres was still maintained, and a high capacity of 570-590 mAh g(-1) at 0.1 C was observed after 50 cycles. Meanwhile, the average capacity fading rates for calcined hedgehog-like CuO microspheres were much lower than that of non-calcined and low surface area CuO microspheres, demonstrating that the calcination of CuO microspheres with the high surface area leads to a better cycling performance. This work provides a new method to prepare high surface area CuO materials, which are promising anode materials with high capacity and long cycling life in Li-ion batteries. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:Highly porous microspheres of CuO with a dandelion-like hollow structure were prepared by a hydrothermal synthesis method. X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, galvanostatic cell cycling and cyclic voltammetry were employed to characterize the structure and electrochemical performance of this unique CuO powder. This CuO electrode showed stable good capacity retention with a reversible capacity of over 600 mA h g−1 during up to 50 cycles. This method may be suitable for larger-scale production of these CuO hollow microspheres for practical applications.

Abstract:Sheaf-like CuO nanostructures have been synthesized by a simple hydrothermal process conducted at 120°C for 24h. The crystalline structure and morphology of the as-synthesized powder have been characterized by using X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM). And the growth process of the sheaf-like nanostructures was also clarified. The electrochemical performance as anode material for lithium-ion batteries was further evaluated by charge–discharge measurements. It was found that the sheaf-like CuO electrode can exhibit a high initial discharge capacity of 965mAh/g. After 41 cycles, the electrode can deliver a capacity of 580mAh/g. And a high rate capability was also obtained.

Abstract:We report here a simple emulsion-phase reduction strategy for the one-step synthesis of highly dispersed Cu2O aggregates from microspheres, to flower-like cubes, to octahedra at 70 degrees C. The size and shape of Cu2O aggregates are controlled by varying the reaction temperature and surfactant concentration. Highly dispersed microspheres (particle diameter ranging from 944.1 to 968.7 nm), flower-like cubes, and octahedra could be vastly obtained in a high yield (>90%). Scanning electron microscopy and transmission electronic microscopy showed that these aggregates were composed of small nanoparticles which appeared to be single-crystal in nature. The composition of the precursors for Cu2O aggregates was a mixture of the Cu(OH)(2) and CuO, and not the expected pure Cu(OH)(2). (C) 2009 The Electrochemical Society.
