Abstract:Self-assembled catalyst: A new kind of chiral supramolecular organocatalyst, self-assembled from chiral amines and poly(alkene glycol)s, was developed. The resulting self-assemblies were found to be highly efficient in the asymmetric catalysis of the unusual Diels–Alder reaction between cyclohexenones and nitrodienes, nitroenynes or nitroolefins, giving excellent chemo-, regio- and enantioselectivities (see scheme). Abstract:The Diels-Alder (DA) reaction and hetero-Diels-Alder (HDA) reaction are among the most powerful methods forthe construction of carbocycles and heterocycles. Abstract:To study the intramolecular Diels-Alder cycloadditon of 2H-chromen-2-one as a diene, a series of chiral N-allyl-N-benzylamides that contain a 2H-chromen-2-one moiety were designed for the synthesis of benzo[f]isoindol-1-ones via an intramolecular Diels-Alder and a subsequent retro-Diels-Alder cycloaddition with the expulsion of CO2. Both the yield (80%-89%) and absolute stereocontrol of the tandem reaction were high when an electron-withdrawing group was attached to the dienophile. The double bond in the styrene substructure remained in the products could be further derivatized by dihydroxylation. Abstract:Catalytic asymmetric Diels−Alder reaction is one of the most powerful reactions in organic chemistry. It is still a challenge to achieve high and general exo-selectivity. A novel bispyrrolidine diboronate compound has been derived from the reaction of two molecules of oxazaborolidine with one molecule of water. Upon activation, it effectively catalyzes (0.4-5 mol % loading) the Diels–Alder reaction between a variety of mono- and di-carbonyl activated dienophiles and dienes with better than 20:1 regioselectivity, up to >99:1 enantioselectivity, and better than 20:1 exo/endo selectivity. Mechanistic studies show a remarkable nonlinearity in enantioselectivity, and a second-order kinetics with respect to the catalyst concentration. A model is proposed to rationalize the above observations. The reaction is expected to find wide applications in organic synthesis.

Abstract:A mild three-component synthetic approach to versatile 2-amino-1,4-dihydropyridines from terminal alkynes, sulfonyl azides, and N-sulfonyl-1-aza-1,3-butadienes was successfully developed and relied on the in situ generation of metalated ynamide intermediates Ib to achieve a formal inverse electron-demand hetero-Diels-Alder reaction. Experimental results suggest that alkali metal cations (Li(+) and Cs(+) ions) might play a critical role to achieve the cycloaddition process.

Abstract:Remote F effect: Unprecedented hetero-Diels-Alder reactions of mono- and bis-substituted cyclopentadienes have been realized by an asymmetric binary-acid catalyst that synergistically combines a chiral phosphoric acid 1 h/InBr(3) with good periselectivity, high regioselectivity, and excellent stereoselectivity. Substituent mapping of the chiral phosphoric acid indicates a dramatic remote ortho-fluoro effect on the stereocontrol.

Abstract:An unprecedented multicomponent cascade asymmetric inverse-electron-demand Diels-Alder/nucleophilic addition/ring-opening reaction involving 2-methoxyfurans as efficient dienophiles was successfully developed with Cu(I)/(t)Bu-Box complex as the catalyst. A diverse array of tetrahydropyridazines containing unexpectedly stable γ-hydroxyl ester moiety was obtained in generally good yield with exclusive regioselectivity and excellent stereoselectivity.
