Abstract:Two new lignans, gymnothelignans V (1) and W (2), were isolated from a methanol extraction of Gymnotheca chinensis Decne. Their structures were established on the basis of extensive 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy. Compound 1 exhibited moderate cytotoxicity against the HCT116, HCT15, A549, MCF-7 and HepG2 cancer cell lines with IC50 values of 45.1 mu M, 26.9 mu M, 49.6 mu M, 30.0 mu M and 49.7 mu M, respectively. Compound 2 exhibited weak cytotoxicity against the A549 cancer cell line with an IC50 value of 41.3 mu M. (C) 2014 Phytochemical Society of Europe. Published by Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:A new sesquiterpene lactone, namely, eupachiilide A (1), as well as two known sesquiterpene lactones, eupachinilide B (2), and eupalinilide G (3), were isolated from the whole plant of Eupatorium chinense L. The new structure was elucidated by spectral methods, especially 2D NMR techniques. The three natural compounds were all Michael addition acceptors, whose electrophilic moiety could react with the nucleophilic residues of the relevant active site and produce a variety of bioactivities. Eupachiilide A demonstrated potent cytotoxicity against two TNBC cell lines.

Abstract:Four new biphenyl lignans, 1-4, with a tetrahydrofuran moiety were isolated from the MeOH extract of the whole plant of Gymnotheca chinensis. Their chemical structures were established by means of spectroscopic analysis, including 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy and comparison with previously reported data. Compounds 1-4 occur as mixtures of atropisomers as revealed by variable-temperature NMR experiments.

Abstract:Four rare polycyclic spiro lignans (1-4) and four new biphenyl tetrahydrofuranone lignans (5-8) were isolated from the whole plant of Gymnotheca involucrata. The structures of the new compounds were elucidated on the basis of detailed spectroscopic analysis and the absolute configuration of 1 was confirmed by single crystal X-ray diffraction. Bioassay results showed that compounds 2 and 6 exhibited weak antifungal activity against Uromyces viciae-fabae at 100 ppm in leaf-disc assays, while compound 3 demonstrated moderate insecticidal activity against Diabrotica balteata at 500 ppm in an artificial diet assay.

Abstract:A previously undescribed sesquiterpene lactone, named eupalinolide N (1), was isolated from traditional Chinese medicine "Ye-Ma-Zhui" (Eupatorium lindleyanum) by ethanol reflux extraction, reduced pressure concentration, macroporous resin column chromatography, and C-18 reversed-phase chromatography. Its structure was elucidated by a comprehensive interpretation of spectroscopy evidence as well as ECD calculations. 1 showed anti-inflammatory activity by inhibiting the gene expressions of pro-inflammatory factors including IL-1 beta, TNFa COX-2, and iNOS at the concentration of 7.5 mu M, as well as attenuating the excretion of NO, IL-6, and TNF-alpha in Raw 264.7 macrophages at the concentration of 15 mu M.

Abstract:Two new sesquiterpenoid lactones, namely eupalinilides K and L, were isolated from Eupatorium lindleyanum DC. Their structures were determined by spectral methods, including 1D- and 2D-NMR spectra. Cytotoxic evaluation showed that eupalinilide L exhibited potent cytotoxicity against P-388 and A-549 tumor cell lines with IC50 values of 0.17 and 2.60 μmol/L, respectively. Abstract:Three new sesquiterpenoids (1–3) and four new benzofuran dimers (+)-4 and (−)-4, (+)-5 and (−)-5, and four known benzofuran dimers (+)-6 and (−)-6, (+)-7 and (−)-7 were isolated from the underground parts of Eupatorium chinense. The enantiomers of racemates (±)-4 ~ (±)-7 were separated by chiral HPLC columns, and their absolute configurations were determined by circular dichroism experiments. The structures of all new compounds were elucidated on the basis of their NMR, and MS data as well as by comparison with literature values. The all of the isolated compounds were tested in vitro for their cytotoxic activities against the Caski, MDA-MB-231 and HepG2 cancer cell lines.

Abstract:Ten new guaiane type sesquiterpene lactones, namely, eupalinilides A-J (1-10), as well as nine known compounds, eupachinilide C (11), eupachifolin D (12), eupachinilide E (13), 2alpha-hydroxyeupatolide (14), 3-deacetyleupalinin A (15), heliangine (16), 8beta-tigloyloxy-2,3-seco-6betaH,7alphaH-helianga-4Z,11(13)-diene-3,10beta;6, 12-diolid-2-oic acid (17), 8beta-(4'-hydroxytigloyloxy)-3beta,14-dihydroxy-6betaH,7alphaH-germacra-1(10)Z,4Z,11(13)-trien-6,12-olide (18), and 8beta-tigloyloxy-3beta,14-dihydroxy-6betaH,7alphaH-germacra-1(10)Z,4E,11(13)-trien-6,12-olide (19), were isolated from the whole plant of Eupatorium lindleyanum. Eupalinilides B (2), C (3), E (5), F (6), and I (9) have been tested for cytotoxicity against P-388 and A-549 tumor cell lines. The results showed that eupalinilides B (2) and E (5) demonstrated potent cytotoxicity. The structures of these compounds were determined by spectroscopic methods including 1D and 2D NMR spectra.

Abstract:Two new ent -labdane diterpenes, ent -3 α ,16-dihydroxylabda-8(17),12( E ),14-triene ( 1 ) and ent -14( S ),15-dihydroxylabda-8(17)-12( E )-dien-18-oic acid ( 2 ), were isolated from the roots of Euphorbia yinshanica . Their structures were elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic methods including HR-ESI-MS and 1D and 2D NMR. The cytotoxic activities against five tumor cell lines was also evaluated, but there was no significant activity.

Abstract:Two new lignans, eplignans B and C (1 and 2), along with seven known compounds (3-9) were isolated from the herbaceous stems of Ephedra intermedia. Their structures were elucidated based on their spectroscopic data. The absolute configurations of 1 and 2 were determined by comparing their calculated and experimental electronism circular dichroic (ECD) spectra. Moreover, all compounds (1-9) were evaluated for their a-glucosidase inhibitory effects and exhibited mild inhibitory activities with the IC50 values greater than 50 mu M.

Abstract:A new E-ring γ-lactone pentacyclic triterpene, 3β-myristoxyurs-12-en-19,28-olide, has been isolated from the chloroform extract of Lysimachia clethroides Duby, together with four known pentacyclic triterpenoid acids. The structures of the compounds were elucidated by comprehensive spectroscopic analyses. All of the compounds showed various degrees of cytotoxic activities in MTT assay.
