Abstract:NdAl2 and TmAl2 single-crystals display Curie temperature (T-C) at 76.5 and 6.0 K, which are significantly close to liquid nitrogen and helium (T-He) temperatures, respectively. Maximum entropy-change (-Delta S-M) for 0-70 kOe are 35.9 and 8.9 J/kg-K at T-C with large cooling efficiency 655 and 398 J/kg for TmAl2 and NdAl2, respectively. Adiabatic temperature change at T-He for 0-20 kOe is 3.7 K for TmAl2. This is promising for cryogenic refrigeration down to sub-Kelvin temperature using an electromagnet. The -Delta S-M for SmAl2 is low (similar to 0.5 J/kg-K at T-C for 0-70 kOe). The direction-dependent anisotropy in thermal and field variations of Delta S-M, and a reasonable correlation between Delta S-M and magnetoresistance are realized for NdAl2 and TmAl2. Abstract:A large magnetocaloric effect (MCE) has been achieved in a rare-earth-free CoMnSb alloy at low magnetic field and intermediate temperature. It is interesting to note that a relatively large magnetic entropy change ∣ΔSM∣ of 2.06J∕kgK with ΔH=0.9T was obtained around 471K. Arrott plots at various temperatures reveal that a second order magnetic transformation occurs near the Curie temperature. The origin of the large ΔSM under the conditions of intermediate temperature and low field is attributed to the magnetic transition from ferromagnetic to paramagnetic. These results suggest that CoMnSb alloy is a good candidate for large MCE when being utilized in intermediate temperature refrigeration systems for some special cases. This investigation demonstrates that some transition metal alloys with large magnetic moments may exhibit large MCE, which extends the region for exploring useful MCE materials.

Abstract:The rare earth (RE) based alloys or compounds with excellent cryogenic magnetocaloric performance have received much research interest recently due to their potential applications of environmental friend magnetic refrigeration (MR) technology. Herein, three ternary RE-based carbide compounds RE2Cr2C3 (RE = Er, Ho, and Dy) were synthesized, an investigation of combined experimental and theoretical has been performed with regard to crystal structure, magnetic properties, magnetic phase transition as well as the magnetocaloric effect (MCE) and magnetocaloric performance. All the RE2Cr2C3 carbide compounds are crystallized in the orthorhombic type crystal structure (C12/m1 space group). The magnetic ground state was confirmed to be ferromagnetic (FM) for Er2Cr2C3, whereas antiferromagnetic (AFM) for Ho2Cr2C3 and Dy2Cr2C3 compounds by density functional theory calculation in addition to experimental observation. Large cryogenic MCE has been observed with the maximum isothermal magnetic entropy change (triangle S-M(max)) of 15.20, 13.98 and 9.04 J/kgK for Er2Cr2C, Ho2Cr2C3 and Dy2Cr2C3 under the magnetic field change (triangle H) of 0-5 T, respectively. Additionally, low field table-like MCE has been achieved in the Er2Cr2C3/Ho2Cr2C3 composites, which is benefit for active applications. These results assess and highlight the potential applicative interest of RE2Cr2C3 carbide compounds in the field of cryogenic MR.

Abstract:The magnetism and magnetocaloric effect (MCE) of some rare-earth (RE)-based oxides have attracted special attention due to their interesting physical and chemical properties, such as easy fabrication and high chemical stability. In this paper, the CaErAlO4 polycrystal compound synthesized by the high-temperature solid-state method manifests the considerable second-order reversible MCE near the temperature of liquid helium. This compound crystallizes in the perovskite-like K2NiF4-type structure with the space group of I4/mmm. The negative paramagnetic Curie temperature suggests that antiferromagnetism is dominant in the material and the moderate magnetization is mainly contributed by the ferromagnetic interaction in the sample. The measured isothermal magnetic entropy changes (-Delta SM) at 3 K are 14.3 and 22.9 J/kg K under 0-20 and 0-50 kOe field changes, respectively. They are greater than those of most RE-based oxides. Our results indicate that the CaErAlO4 compound is a promising candidate for cryogenic magnetic refrigeration.
Large Low Field Magnetocaloric Effect in First-Order Phase Transition Compound TlFe3Te3 with Low-Level Hysteresis.

Abstract:Magnetic refrigeration based on the magnetocaloric effect (MCE) is an environment-friendly, high-efficiency technology. It has been believed that a large MCE can be realized in the materials with a first-order magnetic transition (FOMT). Here, we found that TlFe3Te3 is a ferromagnetic metal with a first-order magnetic transition occurring at Curie temperature TC = 220 K. The maximum values of magnetic entropy change (Δ ) along the crystallographic c-axis, estimated from the magnetization data, reach to 5.9 J kg−1K−1 and 7.0 J kg−1 K−1 for the magnetic field changes, ΔH = 0–1 T and 0–2 T, respectively, which is significantly larger than that of MCE materials with a second-order magnetic transition (SOMT). Besides the large ΔSM, the low-level both thermal and field hysteresis make TlFe3Te3 compound an attractive candidate for magnetic refrigeration. Our findings should inspire the exploration of high performance new MCE materials.
Giant Low-Field Reversible Magnetocaloric Effect at Liquid Helium Temperature of Niobium and Iron Co-Substituted EuTiO3 Compounds

Abstract:Giant magnetocaloric effect (MCE) materials in the liquid helium temperature region have attracted a lot of attention in the field of low-temperature magnetic refrigeration (MR). In this study, a series of niobium (Nb) and iron (Fe) co-substituted EuTiO3 perovskites with cubic structure (space group pm3m) was successfully fabricated, and their magnetic properties as well as cryogenic magnetocaloric effects were investigated in detail. As expected, the introduction of Nb and Fe can significantly modulate the magnetic phase transition and magnetocaloric effect of the EuTiO3 compounds. With increasing Fe concentration, two local minima corresponding to the AFM-FM magnetic phase transition near 5.0 K and FM-PM transition near 10 K with no hysteresis in the thermomagnetic curves are observed, which is attributed to an enhancement of FM coupling. At the same time, the gradually widened -DSM-T curves and the two peaks with a broad shoulder lead to considerable refrigeration capacity (RC). With the field change of DH = 2 T, the calculated values of -DSmax M for the EuTi0.9375-xNb0.0625FexO3 (x = 0.075, 0.1, 0.125, 0.15) compounds are 24.2, 17.6, 14.5 and 14.0 J/(kg center dot K), respectively. The corresponding RC values were calculated to be 144.6, 138.3, 151.2 and 159 J/kg, respectively. Especially, the values of -DSmax M for EuTi0.8625Nb0.0625Fe0.075O3 are 8.6 and 15.1 J/(kg center dot K) under low field changes of 0.5 and 1 T, respectively. Abstract:The new amorphous alloy with the composition of (Tm67Cu33)80Al20 is designed with the deep binary eutectic composition of Tm67Cu33. The (Tm67Cu33)80Al20 alloy exhibits a fully amorphous structure. As the Cu and Al elements have no magnetic moment, there is only Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) magnetic interaction existing in (Tm67Cu33)80Al20 amorphous alloy, leading to its low Curie temperature (T C) (4.4 ± 0.3 K). The peak value of the magnetic entropy change and refrigeration capacity of the (Tm67Cu33)80Al20 amorphous alloy under a magnetic field change of 5 T are 13.4 ± 0.7 J kg−1 K − 1 and 174.2 ± 10.5 J kg−1, respectively. The (Tm67Cu33)80Al20 amorphous alloy possesses a relatively high magnetocaloric response compared with that of the reported RE-based alloys with the similar T C. These results indicate that the (Tm67Cu33)80Al20 amorphous alloy could be a promising candidate material for magnetic refrigeration applications in the liquid helium temperature range.

A Brilliant Magnetic Refrigerant Operating Near Liquid Helium Temperature: Enhanced Magnetocaloric Effect in Ferromagnetic EuTi0.75Al0.125Zr0.125O3

Abstract:Theoretical calculations and experiments demonstrate a dominance of ferromagnetism in EuTi0.75Al0.125Zr0.125O3. Lattice expansion and altered electronic interactions contribute to the ferromagnetic behavior and lead to a significantly enhanced magnetocaloric effect. The remarkable magnetocaloric parameters of −ΔSMmax (18.9 J kg−1 K−1), RC (77.7 J kg−1), and maximum adiabatic temperature change ΔTadmax (7.4 K) for μ0ΔH = 0−1 T make it a brilliant refrigerant operating near liquid helium temperature. Rare earth‐based perovskites have become an attractive research interest in the field of cryogenic magnetic refrigerants due to their unique advantages in practical applications. The remarkable magnetocaloric effect (MCE) renders EuTiO3 a potential magnetic refrigerant in the liquid helium temperature range. More impressively, the tunability between antiferromagnetism (AFM) and ferromagnetism (FM) provides the feasibility of tailoring the magnetism and enhancing the magnetocaloric performance. In this study, the magnetism of EuTi0.75Al0.125Zr0.125O3 is investigated in depth through first‐principles calculations and experimental methods. Both theoretical calculations and experimental results reveal that it exhibits significant ferromagnetism due to the AFM‐FM magnetic transition promoted by the co‐substitution of Al and Zr. Lattice expansion and altered electronic interactions are responsible for the FM behavior, which leads to a significant enhancement of the MCE. With the field change of 0−1 T, the peak values of magnetic entropy change (−ΔSM), refrigerating capacity (RC), and adiabatic temperature change (ΔTad) reach 18.9 J kg−1 K−1, 77.7 J kg−1, and 7.4 K, respectively. More surprisingly, the values of maximum magnetic entropy change (−ΔSMmax ) and maximum adiabatic temperature change ΔTadmax for EuTi0.75Al0.125Zr0.125O3 reach 11.4 J kg−1 K−1 and 3.7 K under the field change of 0−0.5 T, respectively. The remarkable magnetocaloric performance proves it to be a brilliant magnetic refrigerant operating near liquid helium temperature.

Abstract:Magnetic refrigeration (MR) research has been increasingly focused on targeting operation temperatures as low as 4.4–20 K, which is of strategic significance for liquid helium and hydrogen in various activities such as aerospace and highly advanced industries. To date, despite most research has been aimed at obtaining MR materials with large magnetic entropy change and adiabatic temperature change, the optimizing operation temperature to target the cooling range for helium-hydrogen liquefaction is highly desirable and valuable. Here, the significant enhancement in magnetocaloric effects (MCEs) and magnetic materials operating in the temperature range of 4.4–20 K are achieved. The magnetic properties and MCEs of HoCuAl are manipulated by substituting Er or Tm atoms with the lower de Gennes factor and various magnetic anisotropy. The maximum magnetic entropy change ((−Δ S M ) max ) and refrigeration capacity (RC) under 0–5 T for Ho 0.9 Er 0.1 CuAl increases by 25.8 % and 39.8 % respectively compared with HoCuAl compound. Additionally, the critical role of Curie temperature and magnetic anisotropy in the significant enhancement of MCEs is confirmed by the systematic macroscopic physical analysis and neutron diffraction measurements. The excellent MCEs, suitable operation temperature, and free of hysteresis loss demonstrate the promising application prospect in liquefaction of helium-hydrogen.

Abstract:The magnetocaloric effect (MCE) is the entropy change in magnetic materials upon application and removal of magnetic fields, providing an alternative path for refrigeration other than conventional gas cycles. In this work, we report a large MCE of the antiferromagnetic compound ErAl2Ge2. The maximum magnetic-entropy change is −19.52 J/kg K under a magnetic field change of 0–70 kOe for isotropic ErAl2Ge2 powder. This value increases to −24.84 J/kg K for a single crystal when the direction of the magnetic field H is parallel to the ab-plane. By using the anisotropy of the MCE of an ErAl2Ge2 crystal, large rotating magnetic-entropy changes of −6.30 J/kg K for H = 20 kOe and −9.03 J/kg K for H = 40 kOe can be obtained. Thus, a single crystal or textured ErAl2Ge2 may be used as the refrigerant of a rotating magnetic refrigerator, a magnetic cooling system with a simple structure.

Abstract:The rare-earths (RE) based amorphous materials with large magnetocaloric (MC) effects and excellent glass forming ability (GFA) have been recognized as promising candidates for magnetic refrigeration (MR). In this work, the RE 60Co20Al20 (RE = Ho, Er, Tm) amorphous ribbons were successfully fabricated and systematically determined with respect to the GFA, magnetic properties and MC effects. A second order magnetic phase transition (MPT) from ferromagnetic to paramagnetic (FM to PM) without noticeable field or thermal hysteresis has been observed around the Curie temperatures, T C ~ 22.3 K for Ho60Co20Al20, ~ 10.3 K for Er60Co20Al20, and ~ 5.0 K for Tm60Co20Al20, respectively. The MC parameters including the maximum magnetic entropy change ( | Δ S M max | ), temperature-averaged entropy change with 3 K lift [TEC (3 K)], and relative cooling powder/refrigerant capacity (RCP/RC) have been determined to check the MC performances, and the corresponding values are determined to be 14.16, 15.57 and 15.06 J/kgK, to be14.04, 15.38 and 14.78 J/kgK, and to be 625.0/478.7, 505.7/391.8 and 334.0/243.4 J/kg for Ho60Co20Al20, Er60Co20Al20 and Tm60Co20Al20 under the field change Δμ0 H = 5 T, respectively. The present results indicate that RE 60Co20Al20 (RE = Ho, Er, Tm) amorphous ribbons are considerable for cryogenic MR application.

Abstract:The magnetic refrigeration based on rotating magnetocaloric effect (MCE) is promising to build a simplified magnetic cooling system. Until now, most magnetic refrigerants for rotating MCE are single crystal and work at low temperature, which hinder the development of this refrigeration technology. In present paper, we report a large room-temperature rotating MCE in a magnetic-field-aligned NdCo4Al polycrystalline alloy. A large rotating magnetic entropy change of 1.3Jkg−1K−1 under 10kOe and a broad operating temperature window of 52K are achieved. The origin of large rotating MCE in NdCo4Al polycrystalline alloy and its advantages for rotating magnetic refrigeration are discussed.

Abstract:Abstract The magnetic refrigerator (MR) has gained popularity due to its potential to improve the energy efficiency of refrigeration without the use of unsafe gas, as is the case with traditional gas compression techniques. Magnetocaloric lanthanum manganite investigation, particularly at room and cryogenic temperatures, shows favorable results for the development of MR. Previous thermodynamic models require a significant amount of time and effort to estimate the magnetocaloric effect (MCE). Consequently, we employ the phenomenological model (PM), which is simple and straightforward, requiring fewer parameters than many other modeling methods. We studied the magnetocaloric effect (MCE) of silica-coated La 0.54 Sr 0.27 Gd 0.19 MnO 3 (LSGMO) nanoparticles via PM. According to PM results, MCE parameters were obtained as the consequences of the simulated magnetization of silica-coated LSGMO nanoparticles vs. temperature under 0.1 T a magnetic field. It is revealed that the MCE of silica-coated LSGMO nanoparticles covers a broad range of temperatures between 200 and 330 K. The comparison of MCE parameters for silica-coated LSGMO nanoparticles and some published works shows that silica-coated LSGMO nanoparticles are considerably larger than some of the MCE parameters in these published works. Finally, silica-coated LSGMO nanoparticles are suitable function materials in MR, especially at room and cryogenic temperatures, contributing to efficient MR.

Abstract:In the present work, the magnetocaloric effect (MCE) and magnetic properties of Tb(Co0.94Fe0.06)(2) alloy were studied. X-ray diffraction pattern taken at room temperature confirms that the sample crystallizes in single phase with rhombohedral structure. The paramagnetic to ferromagnetic phase transition was observed at 304 K near the room temperature. Banerjee criterion and universal scaling of the MCE was employed to confirm the secondorder nature of the magnetic transition. Differential scanning calorimetry and magnetic characterizations have shown the absence of thermal and magnetic hysteresis in the paramagnetic-ferromagnetic transition region. The magnetic entropy change for Tb(Co0.94Fe0.06)(2) associated with the ferromagnetic transition has been observed over a wide working temperature range (93 K) leading to large refrigerant capacity. The maximum value of magnetic entropy change ( - Delta S-M) under 5T magnetic field is 4.3 J/kgK and the corresponding value of refrigerant capacity is 368.7 J/kg. Interestingly, the magnetocaloric performance of Tb(Co0.94Fe0.06)(2) alloy is comparable with some rare-earth-based magnetocaloric materials. These remarkable features make this alloy a suitable candidate for magnetic refrigeration at room temperature.
Magnetocaloric effect near room temperature in chromium telluride (Cr2Te3)

Abstract:Transition metal telluride compositions are explored extensively for their unique magnetic behavior. Since chromium telluride (Cr2Te3) exhibits a near-room-temperature phase transition, the material can be effectively used in applications such as magnetic refrigeration. Compared to existing magnetocaloric materials, Heusler alloys, and rare-earth-based alloys, the large-scale synthesis of Cr2Te3 involves less complexity, resulting in a stable composition. Compared to existing tellurides, Cr2Te3 exhibited a large magnetic entropy change of 2.36 J/kg-K at a very small magnetic field of 0.1 T. The refrigeration capacity (RC) of 160 J/kg was determined from entropy change versus temperature curve. The results were comparable with the existing Cr compounds. The telluride system, Cr2Te3 compared to pure gadolinium, reveals an enhanced room temperature magnetocaloric effect (MCE) with a broad working temperature range. The heating cycle of MCE was successfully visualized using a thermal imaging setup. To confirm the observed magnetic properties of Cr2Te3, first-principles calculations were conducted. Through density functional theory (DFT) studies, we were able to determine both Curie temperature (TC) and Neel temperature (TN) which validated our experimental transitions at the same temperatures. Structural transition was also observed using first principles DFT calculation which is responsible for magnetic behavior.

Abstract:Polycrystalline samples of Laves-phase compounds Dy(Co1−xAlx)2 (x=0.0, 0.02, 0.04, 0.06, 0.08, 0.1) have been prepared and their magnetic properties were investigated by means of magnetization and ac susceptibility measurements. Results on the magnetocaloric effect (MCE) of these samples have been obtained from the magnetization data, which suggest their potential as working substance of magnetic refrigerators at cryogenic temperature from 142 to 200 K. Both the ac susceptibility results and Arrott plots were used to characterize the magnetic phase transitions in these compounds. By discussing the influence of partial replacement of Co by Al on the magnetic phase transitions and magnetocaloric properties of them, we conclude that the size of the MCE and the order of the magnetic phase transition are closely related.

Abstract:Giant magnetocaloric effect in Mn1.8Fe0.2(P0.59Si0.41) x ( x = 1.00, 1.01, 1.02, 1.03, 1.04) alloys is assessed for cryogenic temperature applications. We found that the Curie temperature can be tuned from. 300 K to 99 K by increase of Mn/Fe and P/Si ratios. We systematically optimized metal/non-metal ratio and homogenization condition to maximize the volume fraction of the Fe2P-type phase. A giant isothermal magnetic entropy changes of 10.6 and 14.0 J/kgK under a magnetic field of 2.0 and 5.0 T is obtained at 117.0 K for Mn1.8Fe0.2(P0.59Si0.41)1.03 alloy. This work demonstrates low-cost Mn-Fe-P-Si alloys with giant MCE are competitive candidates compare to the rare-earth-containing magnetocaloric compounds for cryogenic applications.

Abstract:In this study, we present the crystal structure, magnetic properties, and cryogenic magneto-caloric effect (MCE) of RE 2FeAlO6 (RE = Gd, Dy, Ho) oxides. The XRD refinement analysis suggests that all the RE 2FeAlO6 oxides are crystallized in B-site disordered orthorhombic structure. The RE 2FeAlO6 oxides exhibit large MCEs around T C. The peak magnetic entropy change (-ΔS M) and refrigeration capacity (RC) are 25.9 J/(kgK) and 240.1 J/kg for Gd2FeAlO6, 10.7 J/(kgK) and 274.9 J/kg for Dy2FeAlO6, 9.6 J/(kgK) and 249.6 J/kg for Ho2FeAlO6 under ΔH of 0–70 kOe, respectively. Notably, Gd2FeAlO6 exhibits promising magneto-caloric performance and therefore is a favorable candidate for cryogenic magnetic refrigeration.

Abstract:This study explores the magnetic and magnetotransport behavior of polycrystalline ErAl3 compound. The polycrystalline compound adopts HoAl3-type structures with the R-3m space group, No. 166-2 and hR60 configurations. Multiple magnetic orderings and two field induced metamagnetic transitions are observed. ErAl3 exhibits a significant magnetocaloric effect (MCE), ΔSM = 15.25 J/kg-K and high relative cooling power (RCP) of 383 J/ kg with applied magnetic field change (ΔH) of 70 kOe near the paramagnetic to ferromagnetic transition, showcasing its potential for magnetic refrigeration technology. The compound also demonstrates metallic behavior, with a notable magnetoresistance of 48.5 % at 2 K due to the suppression of antiferromagnetism. The magnetic phase diagram reveals four distinct phases influenced by temperature and magnetic field, identified through the study of the magnetocaloric effect.

Abstract:Magnetic refrigeration based on the magnetocaloric effect (MCE) is conceived as a promising alternative to the conventional gas compression/expansion technique. For potential applications, the magnetic refrigerants exhibiting high-performance at low field are in great need. In this work, we present large MCE obtained in a directionally solidified polycrystalline Ni50Mn18Cu7Ga25 alloy with the co-occurrence of magnetic transition and martensitic transformation. Such a strong magneto-structural coupling yields large magnetic entropy change of -12.8 Jkg(-1)K(-1) and adiabatic temperature variation of 1.6 K at an external magnetic field change of 1.5 T. It is demonstrated that the fabrication of Ni-Mn-Ga based alloys through composition tuning and directional solidification could be an economical processing route to improve magnetocaloric properties.
