Abstract:Transition metal telluride compositions are explored extensively for their unique magnetic behavior. Since chromium telluride (Cr2Te3) exhibits a near-room-temperature phase transition, the material can be effectively used in applications such as magnetic refrigeration. Compared to existing magnetocaloric materials, Heusler alloys, and rare-earth-based alloys, the large-scale synthesis of Cr2Te3 involves less complexity, resulting in a stable composition. Compared to existing tellurides, Cr2Te3 exhibited a large magnetic entropy change of 2.36 J/kg-K at a very small magnetic field of 0.1 T. The refrigeration capacity (RC) of 160 J/kg was determined from entropy change versus temperature curve. The results were comparable with the existing Cr compounds. The telluride system, Cr2Te3 compared to pure gadolinium, reveals an enhanced room temperature magnetocaloric effect (MCE) with a broad working temperature range. The heating cycle of MCE was successfully visualized using a thermal imaging setup. To confirm the observed magnetic properties of Cr2Te3, first-principles calculations were conducted. Through density functional theory (DFT) studies, we were able to determine both Curie temperature (TC) and Neel temperature (TN) which validated our experimental transitions at the same temperatures. Structural transition was also observed using first principles DFT calculation which is responsible for magnetic behavior.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
### What problems does this paper attempt to solve? This paper aims to study and solve the magnetocaloric effect (MCE) of chromium telluride (Cr₂Te₃) near room temperature and evaluate its potential as a magnetic refrigeration material. Specifically, the paper focuses on the following aspects: 1. **Explore the magnetocaloric properties of Cr₂Te₃**: - Cr₂Te₃ exhibits a significant magnetic phase transition near room temperature, which makes it potentially applicable to magnetic refrigeration technology. - Compared with existing magnetocaloric materials (such as Heusler alloys and rare - earth - based alloys), the large - scale synthesis of Cr₂Te₃ is relatively simple and stable. 2. **Verify the magnetocaloric effect of Cr₂Te₃**: - Research shows that Cr₂Te₃ exhibits a large magnetic entropy change (ΔS_M = 2.36 J/kg - K) under a very small magnetic field (0.1 T) and has a relatively high refrigeration capacity (RC ≈ 160 J/kg). - These properties are comparable to existing Cr compounds and even better than some pure gadolinium (Gd) materials. 3. **Confirm the magnetic transition temperature of Cr₂Te₃**: - Through experimental measurement and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, the Curie temperature (T_C) and Néel temperature (T_N) of Cr₂Te₃ were determined, verifying its magnetic phase transition characteristics near room temperature. - Experimental results show that the transition from paramagnetic to antiferromagnetic (T_N) occurs in the range of 288 - 294 K, and the transition from ferromagnetic to paramagnetic (T_C) occurs at about 184.5 K. 4. **Apply and visualize the magnetocaloric effect**: - Using thermal imaging technology, the magnetocaloric effect of Cr₂Te₃ in heating and cooling cycles was successfully visualized. - A magnetic refrigeration material device based on Cr₂Te₃ was designed and fabricated to practically test its temperature changes under different magnetic field conditions. 5. **Theoretical verification of the relationship between structure and magnetism**: - Through first - principles calculations (DFT), the relationship between the crystal structure and magnetism of Cr₂Te₃ was studied, explaining its magnetic behavior and phase - transition mechanism. - Simulation results show that as the temperature rises, the change in the magnetic moment of Cr₂Te₃ is consistent with experimental observations, further supporting the existence of its magnetocaloric effect. In summary, the main objective of this paper is to explore the magnetocaloric effect of Cr₂Te₃ near room temperature and verify its potential as an efficient magnetic refrigeration material. By combining experimental and theoretical calculation methods, the researchers analyzed in detail the magnetic and structural characteristics of Cr₂Te₃, providing important scientific basis for the future development of magnetic refrigeration technology.
