Abstract:Six selaginellin derivatives, including three new analogues selaginellins D-F (1-3), were isolated from the EtOAc extract of the whole plant of Selaginella pulvinata (Hook. et Grev.) Maxim. Their structures were determined on the basis of extensive physical and chemical evidence. Compounds 1 and 4 demonstrated antifungal activities against Candida albicans; compounds 4-6 exhibited significant antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus.

Abstract:Selaginellins G (1) and H (2), two new selaginellin derivatives, were isolated from the whole plant of Selaginella pulvinata. Their structures were elucidated, and complete assignments of the (1)H and (13)C NMR spectroscopic data were achieved by 1D and 2D NMR experiments (HSQC, HMBC, COSY and ROESY). Compound 1 displayed good antifungal activity against Candida albicans with an IC(50) value of 5.3 mu g/ml. Copyright (C) 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract:Abstract: A new selaginellin derivative named as selaginellin S (1) was isolated from the whole plants of Selaginella pulvinata (Hook. et Grev.) Maxim. (Selaginellaceae), together with a known one (selaginellin M, 2). Compounds 1 and 2 were separated and purified by silica gel and Sephadex LH-20 column chromatography. Their structures were determined on the basis of extensive spectroscopic analysis including IR, MS, 1D and 2D NMR experiments, as well as ECD calculations. Compound 1 is a key intermidiant in the biosynthesis pathway of selaginellins. Compound 2 is first reported in this plant.

Abstract:A new selaginellin named selaginellin O (1), along with three other known selaginellins (2-4) were isolated from Selaginella tamariscina (Beauv.) Spring. On the basis of spectroscopic analysis, the structure of selaginellin O was demonstrated to be 4-[(4'-hydroxy-4-formyl-3-((4-hydroxyphenyl)ethynyl)biphenyl-2-yl)(4-hydroxyphenyl)methylene]cyclohexa-2,5-dien-1-one. Compound 1, 2 and 3 exhibited appreciable cytotoxic activity against cultured HeLa cells (human cervical carcinoma cells), as well as significant antioxidant activity.

Abstract:Covering: 2007 to 2020 Selaginellins are a small group of pigments exclusively found in the ancient genus Selaginella. Since the first report of selaginellin from S. sinensis in 2007, more than 110 selaginellins with diverse polyphenolic skeletons have been reported. This review provides extensive coverage of the selaginellins discovered from 2007 to 2020, including 61 natural ones and 52 synthetic analogues. The isolation, chemical structures, plausible biosynthetic pathways, bioactivity, and total synthesis of these selaginellins have been summarized for the first time, and this highlights the fact that the vast uninvestigated Selaginella species may serve as a potential treasure trove of chemically diverse selaginellins waiting to be discovered.

Abstract:Five selaginellin derivatives (1 and 3-6) including a new one, selaginellin T (1), and a new triarylbenzophenone analog, selagibenzophenone A (2), were isolated from the whole plants of Selaginella pulvinata. Their structures were determined by 1D- and 2D-NMR and HR-ESI-MS data. Selagibenzophenone A (2) is the first example of naturally occurring triarylbenzophenone. The results of the phosphodiesterase-4 (PDE4) inhibitory screening assays showed that compounds 1-6 exhibited potent activities with the IC50 values in the range of 1.04-9.35 mu M. [GRAPHICS] .

Abstract:Two new anthraquinone derivatives, selaginones A (1) and B (2), and one new triarylbenzophenone analog, selagibenzophenone B (3), were isolated from Selaginella tamariscina (Beauv.) Spring. Their structures were established by 1D-, 2D-NMR and HR-ESI-MS data. Compounds 1 and 2 represent the uncommon examples of aryl substituted anthraquinone derivatives. Especially, compound 2 is a unique anthranone with exceptional structural feature, in which a p-hydroxyphenyl moiety is attached to the C-10 position. Compound 3 is the second naturally occurring triarylbenzophenone and showed moderate activity against SMCC-7721 and MHCC97-H cell lines with IC50 values of 39.8, 51.5μm respectively.

Abstract:Six compounds including three new benzophenones, selagibenzophenones D-F (1–3), two known selaginellins (4–5) and one known flavonoid (6), were isolated from Selaginella tamariscina. The structures of new compounds were established by 1D-, 2D-NMR and HR-ESI-MS spectral analyses. Compound 1 represents the second example of diarylbenzophenone from natural sources. Compound 2 possesses an unusual biphenyl-bisbenzophenone structure. Their cytotoxicity against human hepatocellular carcinoma HepG2 and SMCC-7721 cells and inhibitory activities on lipopolysaccharide-induced nitric oxide (NO) production in RAW264.7 cells were evaluated. Compound 2 showed moderate inhibitory activity against HepG2 and SMCC-7721 cells, and compounds 4 and 5 showed moderate inhibitory activity to HepG2 cells. Compounds 2 and 5 also exhibited inhibitory activities on lipopolysaccharide-induced nitric oxide (NO) production.

Abstract:Three new biflavonoids and seven known compounds were isolated from the ethyl acetate fraction of the ethanolic extract of Selaginella delicatula. All the isolated compounds were tested for their antiproliferative effects on MCF‐7, HepG2, and HEK 293T cells. Ten compounds, including three new bioflavonoids (1–3) and seven known compounds (4–10), were identified in the ethyl acetate fraction of the 85 % ethanol extract of Selaginella delicatula. The structures of the new compounds were determined through spectroscopic data analysis, and their absolute configurations were established using circular dichroism (CD). All the isolated compounds were tested for their antiproliferative effects on MCF‐7, HepG2, and HEK 293T cells. Compounds 1 and 5 exhibited significant cytotoxicity against MCF‐7 cells, effectively inhibiting their proliferation. Meanwhile, compounds 1, 2, 5, and 7 respectively exhibited strong inhibitory effects on HepG2 cells. Furthermore, when we combined the IC50 values of compounds 3, 5, and 7 on HEK 293T cells, we discovered that they selectively inhibited cell growth.

Abstract:Five new carboxymethyl flavonoids named 5-carboxymethyl-3', 4', 7-trihydroxyflavone (1), (2S)- 5-carboxymethyl-3', 4', 7-trihydroxyflavonone (2a), (2R)-5-carboxymethyl-3', 4', 7-trihydroxyflavonone (2b), (2S)-5-carboxymethyl-4', 7-dihydroxyflavonone (3), 5- carbomethoxymethyl-4', 7-dihydroxyflavone (4), and a new chromone named 5-carboxymethyl-7-hydroxychromone (5), together with two known compounds 5-carboxymethyl-4'-hydroxyflavone-7-O-β-d-glucopyranoside (6), 5-carboxymethyl-4', 7-dihydroxyflavone (7) were isolated from Selaginella moellendorffii Hieron. Their structures including absolute configuration were elucidated by extensive spectroscopic methods and experimental electronic circular dichroism (ECD) spectra. What's worth mentioning is that a carboxymethyl substituent appeared at the C-5 position of all isolated compounds, only recently discovered in genus Selaginella. Compounds 2a and 2b were identified as a pair of chiral isomers; compound 5 was discovered as the first chromone comprising a carboxymethyl side chain. Furthermore, all compounds were evaluated for their antibacterial activities against various Gram-positives and Gram-negatives, and compared to the reference drugs amoxicillin and norfloxacin. As a result, compounds 3 and 4 exhibited as potent antimicrobial agents with a broad spectrum, and compound 5 appeared as the most promising one to combat Gram-positives.

Abstract:Selaginella, which belongs to the plant family Selaginellaceae (Lycopsida), is a key transitional organism in the evolution of aquatic plants to terrestrial plants. Previous phytochemical investigations have isolated flavonoids, lignans, alkyne-phenols and other compounds with many pharmacological activities. Lignans are relatively abundant in the plant family of Selaginella, mainly a series of mustards and coniferyl alcohols derivatives. This review covers the structure types, ultraviolet spectra, biosyntheses and stereochemical configurations of lignans, and provides reference for further research of this genus.

Abstract:Eight new pyrrolidinoindoline alkaloids (1-8) were isolated from the whole plant of Selaginella moellendorfii. Their structures were determined by mass spectrometry, 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy, and chemical interconversions. These alkaloids have a 3-carboxybut-2-enyl group at C-3a and two methyl groups at N-8. The possible biogenetic route from selaginellic acid (1) to neoselaginellic acid (6) was postulated and chemically mimicked. Tautomerization between 6 and 6a was observed. Selected compounds were evaluated for antibacterial, cytotoxic, and acetylcholinesterase inhibitory activities.

Abstract:Two new compounds named as 3 beta,12,16-trihydroxy-6,8,11,13-abietatrien (1), (8R,8'S)-4,4',8-trihydroxyl-3,3'-dimethoxyl-9'-lignanolide (2) and a new natural product 4,4'-dihydroxyl-3,3',5,5'-dimethoxyldiphenyl diketone (3) were isolated from the whole herbs of Selaginella involven Spring. The structures were elucidated by spectroscopic analyses including UV, IR, 1D, 2D NMR and MS methods.
