Abstract:A novel beryllium borate SrBeB2O5 is discovered for the first time through traditional solid state reaction and high temperature solution method. The framework of the structure is composed by two-dimensional [BeB2O5] layers determined from single-crystal X-ray diffraction data. The further structural analysis of beryllium borates reveals that the arrangement of anionic groups attributes to the structural stability. Moreover, the influences of the A-site cations on the structural features of fundamental building blocks in the alkaline or alkaline earth beryllium borates are discussed. The UV-Vis-NIR diffuse-reflectance pattern reveals that this compound has a very wide transparency range of wavelengths down to 200 nm. In addition, the properties of SrBeB2O5 were also characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry, and IR spectroscopy. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:A new polyborate Sr3BeB6O13 has been synthesized and grown by the traditional solid-state reaction method and spontaneous crystallization flux method. It crystallizes in orthorhombic space group Pnma (No. 62) with the following unit cell dimensions: a = 12.775(3) angstrom, b = 10.029(2) angstrom, c = 8.0453(16) angstrom, and Z = 4. The crystal is characterized by an infinite two-dimensional network with a tri-six-membered ring (BeB5O13)(9-) anionic group, which was first found in beryllium borates. Ultraviolet (UV)-visible-near-infrared diffuse reflectance spectroscopy demonstrates that its UV cutoff edge is below 200 nm, and the first-principles electronic structure calculations reveal its energy band gap of 7.03 eV (similar to 175 nm). Thermal analysis exposes its incongruent feature at 1043 degrees C. IR spectroscopy measurements are consistent with the crystallographic study. These data reveal that this crystal would be applied as a deep-ultraviolet optical material.

Abstract:The crystal structures and their changing trend in the strontium-bismuth-oxide system are critical for the studies of the related systems and their applications. The crystal structure of Sr3Bi2O6 was obtained for the first time in the space group of R3[combining macron] with a huge unit cell of a = b = 25.1146(19) Å and c = 18.3685(16) Å and all bismuth ions are Bi3+ forming [BiO3] trigonal pyramids. Sr3Bi2O6 is a key compound for the structural change trend in the SrO-Bi2O3 binary oxide system at 1000 °C. With a decrease in the bismuth content, its valence state changes from +3 to +5 and Bi-O polyhedra changes from connected to isolated before Bi(v) appearance. In the system, the boundary of the solid solution β-phase (Sr1-xBixO1+0.5x) at 900 °C was also determined accurately as 0.770 ≤ x ≤ 0.862, experimentally.

Abstract:The formation and solid-solution structure of BiSr x Ca1−xO2.50 were studied by X-ray powder diffraction analysis, and the crystallography data of the phase are given. The crystal structure of BiSr x Ca1−xO2.50 belongs to the monoclinic system with space group P1m1 or P12/m1, and the cell parameters for BiCaO2.50 (x=0.00) are a=1.8363 nm, b=0.5366 nm, c= 1.4670 nm and β=100.26°. BiSr x Ca1−xO2.50 is a solid solution of Bi-Ca-O and Bi-Sr-O. When the strontium solid solubility Sr/Sr+Ca=0.50, the strontium dissolved in the phase reaches saturation, while the strontium solid solubility limit of the phase is between 0.67 and 0.75, and beyond this limit the crystal structure is greatly distorted.

Abstract:A novel beryllium borate CsBe4(BO3)(3) has been grown in crystals by high-temperature flux method using spontaneous nucleation technique for the first time. The crystal structure of this compound was determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. It crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Pnma with lattice parameters a = 8.3914(5) A(sic), b = 13.3674(7) (sic)A, c = 6.4391 (3) A(sic), Z = 4, V = 722.28(7) A(sic)3. The crystal takes the same structure type as Rb analog based on the units of BO3 triangles and BeO4 tetrahedrons, displaying a three-dimensional tunnel structure with Cs atoms filling in the cages. The IR spectrum confirms the presence of BO3 groups and the UV vis IR diffuse reflectance spectrum exhibits this compound has a short UV cut-off edge below 200 nm. Abstract:High-quality Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 single crystals with dimensions up to 15 x 4 x 0.05 mm3 were grown from the starting composition Bi2+xSr2CaCu2Oy, where x = 0, 0. 1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5, 0.6 and 0.7. Different amounts of Bi2O3 in excess are included in each crystal growth run to act as flux for the growth and the optimum concentrations of the flux amount have been found. Structure characterization of a high-quality 2212 free crystal of 5 x 1.8 x 0.02 MM3 was conducted by the (001), (h00) and (0k0) X-ray diffractions, using a rotating anode diffractometer, and the back-reflection Laue photograph. It is found that melting incongruency is the main problem encountered in the growth of large and pure-phase single crystals from Bi2O3-rich melts and we have shown that, for x = 0.8, crystals of 2212 phase and crystals of 2201 phase coexisting with CuO are obtained from the two segregated parts of the Bi-rich melts.

Abstract:A new kind of Bi-based single crystal Bi2Sr1.5Pr2.5Cu2Oy was grown by a self-flux method. The crystals were characterized by energy dispersive X-ray analysis and X-ray diffraction. It was found that the crystal has an orthorhombic structure with lattice parameters a=5.491(7)Å, b=5.532(8)Å and c=35.68(8)Å, which are close to those of the Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3Oy (Bi2223) phase, and incommensurate modulation structures along b-axis with period of 4.15. Intergrowth of other phases in some crystals were also observed.

Abstract:A new kind of borate crystalline material Sr3(BO3)2 with a similar calcite type structure was designed and synthesized by solid state reaction method, moreover, the single crystal growth was attempted with traditional Czochralski pulling method. Crystal phase of Sr3(BO3)2 was investigated by using X-Ray powder diffraction (XRPD) at room temperature and found similar to Ca3(BO3)2 crystal with space group of R-3c. The phase stability was studied by means of thermogravimetric differential thermal analysis (TG/DTA) and high temperature XRPD up to 1350 °C, where an obvious endothermic peak was observed in DTA curve around 1250 °C, and weak splits of diffraction peaks were found at temperatures above 1250 °C, indicating the existence of structure transformation for Sr3(BO3)2 crystal. Raman properties were studied experimentally and theoretically by using density functional perturbation theory, though the strongest frequency shift of Sr3(BO3)2 crystal (900 cm−1) was comparable to that of Ca3(BO3)2 (927 cm−1), the line width of the strongest Raman peak obtained for Sr3(BO3)2 (5.72 cm−1) was much lower than Ca3(BO3)2 (7.01 cm−1), indicating a larger Raman gain for Sr3(BO3)2 crystal, which would be favorable for stimulated Raman scattering application.

Abstract:A new borate compound-Ba_(0.87)Sr_(3.13)B_(14)O_(25) was reported in the paper. The crystal with sizes of 35mm×25mm×5mm was grown by the Kyropoulos method, and the structure was determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The compound crystallizes in the monoclinic system, space group C2/m, with 4 formula units in a cell of dimensions a=1.6425(3)nm,b=0.77739(16)nm,c=1.6665(3)nm,β=119.22(3)°. The borate network can be described as a three dimensional linkage of B_3O_8 six-member single rings connected by O atoms and BO_3 triangles,and the barium and strontium atoms fit into channels of this network. The transmittance spectrum of the crystal was measured, and the microhardness is 578kg/mm~2.
