Abstract:Aster tataricus L.f. is highly valued for its rich reserves of bioactive compounds. Our research focused on the identification of previously unreported compounds found within the ethanol extract of A. tataricus . Through meticulous spectroscopic analyses and computational methods like NMR calculations and ECD, we successfully elucidated the structures of five novel compounds termed tatarisides A-E ( 1–5 ), alongside two known compounds ( 6, 7 ). The anti-inflammatory assays conducted yielded noteworthy results, particularly in relation to compounds 1 and 5. These compounds exhibited significant potential in inhibiting the release of NO in LPS-induced RAW 264.7 cells, as evidenced by their respective IC 50 values of 17.81 ± 1.25 μM and 13.32 ± 0.84 μM. The discovery of these new compounds adds to the existing knowledge of A. tataricus 's chemical composition and potential applications.

Abstract:A new ursane-based compound, astilbotriterpenic acid (1), was isolated from the rhizomes of Astilbe chinensis. Its structure was determined on the basis of chemical evidence and extensive spectroscopic methods, including 1D- and 2D-NMR. The pentacyclic triterpenoid I was assayed for its in vitro cytotoxicity against Bcap37, HeLa, HepG2, HO-8910, K562, PAA, SGC7901, and P388 cancer cells, as well as for its apoptosis-inducing activity in HeLa cells. Compound 1 was found to strongly inhibit tumor-cell growth through induction of apoptosis and may, thus, be further evaluated as a novel chemotherapeutic agent.

Abstract:Two new triterpenoids, schisphendilactone A and B ( 1 and 2 ), together with three known triterpenoids, were isolated from the stems of Schisandra sphenanthera . Their structures were elucidated by spectroscopic methods, and the absolute configuration of 1 was determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Compound 2 showed moderate inhibitory activity against SW480 cancer cell line, and compound 5 exhibited promising anti-HIV-1 activity with EC 50 value of 0.52 μg ml −1 and therapeutic index value of 117.12.

Abstract:A new ursane-type triterpenoid, 3 beta-hydroxy-urs-30-p-Z-hydroxycinnamoyloxy-12- en-28-oic-acid (1), together with three known triterpenoids, 3 beta-hydroxy-urs-30-p-E-hydroxycinnamoyloxy-12-en-28-oic-acid (2), 2 alpha, 3 beta, 19 alpha-trihydroxy-urs-12-en-28-oic-acid (3), and ursolic acid (4), four known lignans, pinoresinol (5), 9 alpha-hydroxypinoresinol (6), (+)-medioresinol (7), and (+)-kobusin (8), and two steroids, beta-sitosterol (9), and daucosterol (10), were isolated from the whole parts of Teucrium viscidum. Their structures were established by a combination of spectroscopic data analysis, besides comparison with literature data. Compounds 1-4 were evaluated for their inhibitory activities against 11 beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase 1 (11 beta-HSD1).

Abstract:Two new acyclic sesquiterpenoids (1–2) and fourteen known monocyclic monoterpenoids (3–16) were isolated from the aerial parts of Clematis chinensis Osbeck. Abstract:Seven anthraquinones, including two new natural products, hedyanthraquinones A and B (1, 2), were isolated from Hedyotis caudatifolia. The structures were elucidated based on NMR, MS data and physico-chemical properties. Compounds 1 and 2 displayed moderate cytotoxic activities against a panel of cultured tumor cell lines (HL-60, Bcap37, SMMC7721) with IC50 values of 13.71 ∼ 26.29 μM. The result showed that anthraquinones are typical compounds of Hedyotis genus, which could be useful as characteristic markers in chemotaxonomic research and might helpful for explaining the use of H. caudatifolia in Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Abstract:One new highly oxygenated nortriterpene, named sieverlactone (1), one new sesquiterpene, 1 beta, 10 beta-epoxy-8 alpha-acetoxyachillin (2), one new natural product, 5-propinyl-thiophene-2-carboxylic acid (3), and one new thiophene, 3-hydroxy-5-propinyl-2-acetyl-thiophene (4), together with 10 other known compounds (5 - 14), were isolated from the dried aerial parts of Artemisia sieversiana. Their structures were elucidated by a combination of extensive spectroscopic analysis, including 1D, 2D NMR spectroscopic and mass spectrometric data. Meanwhile, the stereochemistry of 1 and 2 was confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction technique using Cu radiation. All the isolates were evaluated for their anti-neuroinflammatory effects on the lipopolysaccharide-induced nitric oxide production in BV-2 murine microglial cells. Compounds 2, 5, and 6 exhibited the significant activities with IC50 values of 6.5 +/- 0.5, 11.9 +/- 0.7, and 10.1 +/- 0.3 mu M, respectively, comparable to the positive control, quercetin, with an IC50 value of 16.3 +/- 0.4 mu M. Abstract:The pericarps of Trichosanthes kirilowii are often used to treat cough in traditional Chinese medicine, and its ethanol extract exhibited effective therapeutic effects on acute lung injury (ALI) in vivo caused by H1N1. An anticomplement activity-guided fractionation on the extract resulted in the isolation of ten new terpenoids, including seven monoterpenoids, trichosanates A-G (1-7), and three cucurbitane-type triterpenoids, cucurbitacins W-Y (8-10), as well as eleven known terpenoids (11-21). The new terpenoids' structures were determined by spectroscopic analysis, X-ray crystallographic analysis (1), electronic circular dichroism (ECD) analysis and calculations (2-10). Twelve monoterpenoids (1-7 and 11-15) and five cucurbitane-type triterpenoids (8-10, 18, and 20) exhibited anticomplement activity in vitro. For the monoterpenoids, the long aliphatic chain substituents might enhance their anticomplement activity. Additionally, two representative anticomplement terpenoids, 8 and 11, obviously attenuated H1N1-induced ALI in vivo by inhibiting complement overactivation and reducing inflammatory responses.

Abstract:Four new triterpene saponins, clematomandshurica saponins A-D (1-4), together with three known saponins (5-7) have been isolated from the roots and rhizomes of Clematis mandshurica. Abstract:A new triterpenoid saponin named clematichinenoside AR(2), along with the six known compounds, was isolated and characterized from Clematis chinensis Osbeck (Ranunculaceae), a commonly used traditional Chinese medicine with anti-inflammatory and anti-rheumatoid activities. The structure of the new saponin was elucidated as 3-O-beta-[(O-alpha-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1 --> 6)-O-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(1 --> 4)-O-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(1 --> 4)-O-beta-D-ribopyranosyl-(1 --> 3)-O-alpha-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1 --> 2)-alpha-L-arabinopyranosyl)oxy]olean-12-en-21alpha-hydroxy-28-oic acid-O-alpha-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1 --> 4)-O-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(1 --> 6)-beta-D-glucopyranosyl ester (1) by spectral analysis and chemical methods. The effects of two major saponins (clematichinenosides AR and AR(2)) on the secretion of TNF-alpha in murine peritoneal macrophages induced by lipopolysaccharides were further investigated. The result indicated that a majority of triterpenoid saponins of this herb may be useful in the exploration of lead compounds for the treatment of some autoimmune diseases.
