Journal of Evidence-Based Medicine
Abstract:We are delighted to welcome you to this, the first issue of the Journal of Evidence Based Medicine. This new journal has grown out of a decade of work by the editors and authors of the Chinese Journal of Evidence Based Medicine. It will combine the tremendous resource of Chinese healthcare research with articles from elsewhere. In its relatively short life, the Chinese Journal of Evidence Based Medicine has become an important source of evidence and knowledge to help inform health care in China. Reports of dozens of systematic reviews and randomized trials have been published, as well as many articles on methods for the evaluation of health care, and the use of evidence in decision-making. This new journal is an opportunity to build on the Chinese journal to bring this rich source of knowledge to a global audience. The Journal of Evidence Based Medicine will contain reports of new research, and of the application of evidence in health care. We will include systematic reviews, and reports of randomized trials and other evaluations of healthcare interventions. The Journal will contain reports of research seeking to identify the best methods for conducting these types of research. We will also publish essays about topics and people. Our hope is that the articles will be of relevance and interest to people inside and outside of China, and we welcome submissions from anywhere in the world. This first issue has a special focus on the Wenchuan earthquake and its aftermath, showing the importance of reliable knowledge in responding to natural disasters. The Journal contains sections to report new research, to discuss evidence from elsewhere and to illustrate the application of knowledge. Authors of recently published Cochrane Reviews will summarise their findings in their own words; and we will provide a taste of the content of each new issue of the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews. There will also be short descriptions of different types of research, news items and photographs of recent events. We look forward to working on this project with colleagues in Wiley-Blackwell, the Chinese Journal of Evidence Based Medicine, and the Chinese Evidence-Based Medicine Centre at the West China Hospital at Sichuan University, and many more throughout the world. We hope that the Journal will inform, educate, and entertain its readers, and we will try to teach and to learn. In doing so, we are reminded of a Chinese story about two gardeners trying to encourage their young plants to grow. One did this by pulling at them every morning in the hope that this would help them grow faster. The other simply made sure they had enough water and sunlight. After a short time, the first gardener found that her plants had died, while her friend's were still alive. And, after a longer time, the second gardener's plants had grown tall and strong. The first gardener's attempts to force her plants to grow had weakened their roots so much that they could not survive. We will seek to ensure that the Journal of Evidence Based Medicine is like the second gardener, providing articles that are interesting and stimulating, helping readers to grow their knowledge at their own pace. Your ideas, comments, and articles will help to achieve this and, so, we look forward especially to working with you on the Journal of Evidence Based Medicine.
