Abstract:Carbonate-based electrolytes demonstrate safe and stable electrochemical performance in lithium-sulfur batteries. However, only a few types of sulfur cathodes with low loadings can be employed and the underlying electrochemical mechanism of lithium-sulfur batteries with carbonate-based electrolytes is not well understood. Here, we employ in operando X-ray absorption near edge spectroscopy to shed light on a solid-phase lithium-sulfur reaction mechanism in carbonate electrolyte systems in which sulfur directly transfers to Li 2 S without the formation of linear polysulfides. Based on this, we demonstrate the cyclability of conventional cyclo-S 8 based sulfur cathodes in carbonate-based electrolyte across a wide temperature range, from −20 °C to 55 °C. Remarkably, the developed sulfur cathode architecture has high sulfur content (>65 wt%) with an areal loading of 4.0 mg cm −2 . This research demonstrates promising performance of lithium-sulfur pouch cells in a carbonate-based electrolyte, indicating potential application in the future.
A Novel Strategy for High-Stability Lithium Sulfur Batteries by in Situ Formation of Polysulfide Adsorptive-Blocking Layer

Abstract:Lithium sulfur (LiS) batteries are one of the most promising energy storage devices owing to their high energy and power density. However, the shuttle effect as a key barrier hinders its practical application by resulting in low coulombic efficiency and poor cycling performance. Herein, a novel design of in situ formed polysulfide adsorptive-blocking layer (PAL) on the cathode surface was developed to tame the polysulfide shuttling and promote the cycling stability for LiS batteries. The PAL is consisted of La2S3, which is capable to chemically adsorb polysulfide via the strong interaction of LaS bond and SS bond, and build an effective barrier against sulfur escaping. Moreover, the La2S3 is capable to suppress the crystallization of Li2S and promote the ion transfer, which contributes to the reduced internal resistance of batteries. Furthermore, the by-product LiNO3 simultaneously forms a stable anode solid and electrolyte interface to further inhibit the polysulfide shuttle. By this simple and convenient method, the resultant LiS batteries achieved exceptional cycling stability with an ultralow decay rate of 0.055% since the 10th cycle.

Abstract:A novel high-rate dischargeable semi-solid Li-S battery without free liquid electrolyte is assembled using a multi-functional separator with a polysulfide shield. The polysulfide shield is composed of Li+-Nafion, polyethylene oxide, and super P carbon. Hierarchical porous carbon is used as a sulfur holder to anchor polysulfide and improve cathode conductivity. Unlike all-solid Li-S batteries, the resultant Li-S battery shows excellent performance in both rate capacity and cycleability. The sulfur lithiation capacity reaches 1330 mAh g(-1) at 0.2 C (0.335 A g(-1) of S) and 690 mAh g(-1) (338 mAh g(-1) of electrode materials) at 10 C (16.75 A g(-1) of S). The cell with the fabricated separator (SNP/Celgard) showed very low capacity degradation rate of less than 0.1% per cycle at 1 C (a discharge current density of 1.675 A g(-1)). Abstract:This work presents a facile synthesis approach for core-shell structured Li2S nanoparticles with Li2S as the core and Li3PS4 as the shell. This material functions as lithium superionic sulfide (LSS) cathode for long-lasting, energy-efficient lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries. The LSS has an ionic conductivity of 10(-7) S cm(-1) at 25 °C, which is 6 orders of magnitude higher than that of bulk Li2S (∼10(-13) S cm(-1)). The high lithium-ion conductivity of LSS imparts an excellent cycling performance to all-solid Li-S batteries, which also promises safe cycling of high-energy batteries with metallic lithium anodes.

Abstract:Previous investigations have shown that high-energy lithium-ion sulfur batteries could be directly assembled with lithium sulfide (Li2S) cathode and a non-lithium anode. However, the existing lithium-ion sulfur battery suffers from the multistep sophisticated preparation process, high activation potential and also polysulfides corrosion to the anode. In this work, we propose and prepare a facile and feasible Li2S-based lithium-ion sulfur battery system, which is enabled by a bifunctional electrolyte additive. At first, Li2S particles were loaded on the low-cost carbonized commercial wipes by a solution-based infiltration method. Interestingly, for the first time, it is found that the well-designed indium triiodide (InI3) electrolyte additive not only performed as a cathodic redox mediator, reducing the activation potential of Li2S cathode, but also resulted in a passivation layer, preventing the anode from corrosion due to the shuttle effect. The obtained SnO2/Li2S full cell exhibits a stable electrochemical performance (983, 878, 746 and 675 mA h/g at 0.2, 0.4, 0.8, and 1.5 C, 647 mA h/g after 200 cycles at 0.5 C). Moreover, the manageable amount of lithium ions and the voltage cooperation between the cathode and anode in the full cell rendered the battery with a strong recovery ability against the abusive conditions test, such as over-charge, over-discharge and short-circuit, showing a great potential for practical use.

Abstract:The low density associated with low sulfur areal loading in the solid-state sulfur cathode of current Li-S batteries is an issue hindering the development of this type of battery. Polysulfide catholyte as a recyclable liquid fuel was proven to enhance both the energy density and power density of the battery. However, a critical barrier with this lithium (Li)/polysulfide battery is that the shuttle effect, which is the crossover of polysulfides and side deposition on the Li anode, becomes much more severe than that in conventional Li-S batteries with a solid-state sulfur cathode. In this work, we successfully applied an acrylate-based gel polymer electrolyte (GPE) to the Li/polysulfide system. The GPE layer can effectively block the detrimental diffusion of polysulfides and protect the Li metal from the side passivation reaction. Cathode-static batteries utilizing 2 M catholyte (areal sulfur loading of 6.4 mg cm-2) present superior cycling stability (727.4 mAh g-1 after 500 cycles at 0.2 C) and high rate capability (814 mAh g-1 at 2 C) and power density (∼10 mW cm-2), which also possess replaceable and encapsulated merits for mobile devices. In the cathode-flow mode, the Li/polysulfide system with catholyte supplied from an external tank demonstrates further improved power density (∼69 mW cm-2) and stable cycling performance. This novel and simple Li/polysulfide system represents a significant advancement of high energy density sulfur-based batteries for future power sources.

Abstract:Lithium-Sulfur (Li-S) batteries have recently raised worldwide attention owning to the high specific theoretical energy density of sulfur (2600Wh kg-1), the low cost and the wide availability of sulfur. However, the practical application of lithium-sulfur batteries has been hindered by several challenges, such as the shuttling of polysulfide intermediates, the large volume expansion of sulfur during charge/discharge and the dendrites formation on Li-anode. In this talk, we will introduce our recent investigation about Li-S batteries, including physical and chemical immobilization of sulfur to improve cycling stability, segregator optimization to minimize the shuttling effect and design of ionic liquids based electrolyte system to reduce the self-discharge. Abstract:The lithium-sulfur battery is one of the most prospective chemistries in secondary energy storage field due to its high energy density and high theoretical capacity. However, the dissolution of polysulfides in liquid electrolytes causes the shuttle effect, and the rapid decay of lithium sulfur battery has greatly hindered its practical application. Herein, combination of sulfonated reduced graphene oxide (SRGO) interlayer on the separator is adopted to suppress the shuttle effect. We speculate that this SRGO layer plays two roles: physically blocking the migration of polysulfide as ion selective layer and anchoring lithium polysulfide by the electronegative sulfonic group. Lewis acid-base theory and density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that sulfonic groups have a strong tendency to interact with lithium ions in the lithium polysulfide. Hence, the synergic effect involved by the sulfonic group contributes to the enhancement of the battery performance. Furthermore, the uniformly distributed sulfonic groups working as active sites which could induce the uniform distribution of sulfur, alleviating the excessive growth of sulfur and enhancing the utilization of active sulfur. With this interlayer, the prototype battery exhibits a high reversible discharge capacity of more than 1300 mAh g-1 and good capacity retention of 802 mAh g-1 after 250 cycles at 0.5 C rate. After 60 cycles at different rates from 0.2 to 4 C, the cell with this functional separator still recovered a high specific capacity of 1100 mAh g-1 at 0.2 C. The results demonstrate a promising interlayer design toward high performance lithium-sulfur battery with longer cycling life, high specific capacity, and rate capability.

Abstract:The unstable interface of lithium metal in high energy density Li sulfur (Li-S) batteries raises concerns of poor cycling, low efficiency and safety issues, which may be addressed by using intercalation types of anode. Herein, a new prototype of Li-ion sulfur battery with high performance has been demonstrated by coupling a graphite anode with a sulfur cathode (2 mA h cm(-2)) after successfully addressing the interface issue of graphite in an ether based electrolyte.

Abstract:Among many lithium secondary batteries, lithium–sulfur batteries stand out because of their high theoretical specific energy, low cost, non-toxicity and the fact that they cause no environmental pollution. However, due to poor electronic and ionic conductivity, shuttle effect, lithium dendrites and other defects, it remains a big challenge to achieve large-scale application of lithium-sulfur batteries. Here we report an all-solid-state lithium–sulfur battery based on Li-argyrodite Li 6 PS 5 Cl solid-state electrolytes through a slurry-coating method. Li 6 PS 5 Cl with a high ionic conductivity of 1.3 × 10 –3 S cm −1 at room temperature is used as the solid electrolyte and the ion conductive additive in the electrode. The sulfur-based composite cathode is fabricated through a slurry-coating process by dispersing sulfur, Li 6 PS 5 Cl, ethyl cellulose, and carbon black in 1,3-dioxolane (DOL). This method can disperse the Li 6 PS 5 Cl around sulfur particles well, and the solvent does not react with any component of composite cathodes during preparation. The battery delivers a high discharge capacity of 962 mA h g −1 at room temperature for the first cycle at 80 mA g −1 . While the Coulombic efficiency is approximately 99.5% during 100 cycles. This work provides a new insight into the combination method between the sulfide-type SSEs and sulfur cathodes, which is critical to the electrochemical performance of all-solid-state lithium-sulfur batteries.

Abstract:Two immiscible liquid‐based electrolyte layers are applied for lithium–sulfur batteries. The sulfolane‐based cathode electrolyte layer promotes lithium polysulfide (LiPS) dissolution and conversion kinetics. The anode electrolyte layer containing low polarity dibutyl ether repels sulfone and LiPS, preventing anode corrosion. Dissolution of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) is essential for fast cathode kinetics, but detrimental for anode stability, especially under lean electrolyte conditions. In this work, the phase separation phenomenon between solvents with different polarities (tetramethyl sulfone [TMS] and dibutyl ether [DBE]) is utilized to enable the design of a dual‐phase electrolyte. High‐polarity, high‐density TMS–lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide–ammonium trifluoroacetate as the cathode electrolyte strongly solvates LiPSs, which propel the sulfur redox reaction. Moreover, the composite of DBE and a polymeric ion conductor serves as the anode electrolyte. The addition of DBE in the anode side effectively prevents the crossover of corrosive species (LiPSs and ammonia trifluoroacetate), enabling a significant improvement in Li‐metal anode stability. The electrode‐specific dual‐phase electrolyte design provides electrochemical performance superior to conventional electrolytes. Without additional electrode engineering, pouch cells assemble with the dual‐phase electrolyte cycle under a lean electrolyte (4 μL mg−1) and low‐Li‐excess condition (N/P = 3) for 120 cycles.

Abstract:Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries are promising candidates for high-energy storage devices due to high theoretical capacities of both the sulfur cathode and lithium (Li) metal anode. Considerable efforts have been devoted to improving sulfur cathodes. However, issues associated with Li anodes, such as low Coulombic efficiency (CE) and growth of Li dendrites, remain unsolved due to unstable solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) and lead to poor capacity retention and a short cycling life of Li-S batteries. In this work, we demonstrate a facile and effective approach to fabricate a flexible and robust hybrid SEI layer through co-deposition of aromatic-based organosulfides and inorganic Li salts using poly(sulfur-random-1,3-diisopropenylbenzene) as an additive in an electrolyte. The aromatic-based organic components with planar backbone conformation and π-π interaction in the SEI layers can improve the toughness and flexibility to promote stable and high efficient Li deposition/dissolution. The as-formed durable SEI layer can inhibit dendritic Li growth, enhance Li deposition/dissolution CE (99.1% over 420 cycles), and in turn enable Li-S batteries with good cycling stability (1000 cycles) and slow capacity decay. This work demonstrates a route to address the issues associated with Li metal anodes and promote the development of high-energy rechargeable Li metal batteries.

Abstract:Although the reversible and inexpensive energy storage characteristics of the lithium-sulfur (Li-S) battery have made it a promising candidate for electrical energy storage, the dendrite growth (anode) and shuttle effect (cathode) hinder its practical application. Here, it is shown that new electrolytes for Li-S batteries promote the simultaneous formation of bilateral solid electrolyte interfaces on the sulfur-host cathode and lithium anode, thus effectively suppressing the shuttle effect and dendrite growth. These high-capacity Li-S batteries with new electrolytes exhibit a long-term cycling stability, ultrafast-charge/slow-discharge rates, super-low self-discharge performance, and a capacity retention of 94.9% even after a 130 d long storage. Importantly, the long cycle stability of these industrial grade high-capacity Li-S pouch cells with new electrolytes will provide the basis for creating robust energy dense Li-S batteries with an extensive life cycle.

Abstract:With its superior theoretical energy density as well as abundance and environment-friendliness, the lithium-sulfur battery (LiSB) is a potential candidate to replace the traditional energy storage and generation systems. An innovative design is proposed for the high-performance solid-state LiSB system by combining the multi-functional cathode comprising the sulfur-loaded Al2 O3 -modified carbon nanotubes (S@ACNTs) and the flexible hybrid solid electrolyte (HSE). Assembled with S@ACNTs active material, the polycation poly(diallyldimethylammonium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide) (PDATFSI) binder exhibits high Li+ conductivity of 0.45 mS cm-1 at room temperature, good thermal stability up to 450 °C, high adhesive strength with aluminum current collector up to 24 MPa, sustainable non-flammability, and desirable flexibility. When assembled with HSE membrane, the S@ACNTs/PDATFSI-60IL cathode layer demonstrates effective polysulfide trapping behavior and superior compatibility (65 Ω), resulting in high discharge capacity of 1203 mAh g-1 at 0.2 C in the 1st cycle, and long-term stability up to 91.69% of the discharge capacity after 200 cycles of charge/discharge process.

Abstract:Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries have recently received great attention because they promise to provide energy density far beyond current lithium ion batteries. Typically, Li-S batteries operate by conversion of sulfur to reversibly form different soluble lithium polysulfide intermediates and insoluble lithium sulfides through multistep redox reactions. Herein, we report a functional electrolyte system incorporating dimethyl disulfide as a co-solvent that enables a new electrochemical reduction pathway for sulfur cathodes. This pathway uses soluble dimethyl polysulfides and lithium organosulfides as intermediates and products, which can boost cell capacity and lead to improved discharge-charge reversibility and cycling performance of sulfur cathodes. This electrolyte system can potentially enable Li-S batteries to achieve high energy density.

Abstract:Battery technologies involving Li-S chemistry are promising approaches to realize inexpensive and high energy density storage for sustainable energy applications. However, current Li-S batteries still suffer from short life-time due to active material loss through the soluble polysulfide molecules shuttling between battery cathode and anode.[1] We present herein our recent advances in the understanding of the electrochemical reactions at Li-S battery cathode and addressing the shuttle effect by polysulfide trapping. Specifically, an in-operando characterization technique based on optical microscopy is developed to intuitively visualize the selective deposition of sulfur and Li2S in battery cathodes, and the critical roles of current collectors and additives, including different metals and semiconductors, are demonstrated. Accordingly, innovative cathode architectures are designed to control the oriented deposition and diffusion of sulfur-containing species. In particular, an ultrathin and compact blocking layer of 2D MoS2 and WS2 nanoflakes, with a thickness of ca. 15 nm, are deposited on separator through a solution based self-assembly method,[2] which effectively adsorb polysulfide molecules and thus suppress their diffusion to the battery anode. In addition, Li2S-metal composites and polymer-metal hybrid networks are fabricated as hosts for sulfur cathodes to enable rapid battery charge-discharge processes given the large active surface area and better control of charge (or discharge) product deposition.[3] Combining these two strategies, we report greatly enhanced specific capacity (over 1200 mAh g-1) and cyclability (over 500 cycles) for the nanostructured sulfur cathodes compared to the conventional carbon-sulfur based cathode, and the routes to further improving high-energy and long-life Li-S battery are discussed.
