Abstract:BiCuSeO has high Seebeck coefficient, low lattice thermal conductivity and excellent performance. At the same time, its abundant stock, low price, non-toxic and environmentally friendly raw materials and easy synthesis, makes it a new oxide thermoelectric material with great application prospects. This review firstly discusses and summarizes the preparation, properties including the structure, stability and thermoelectric properties and other basic characteristics of BiCuSeO. And then the performance optimization methods of BiCuSeO at home and abroad such as doping, compositing, texturization, vacancies and synergetic approaches in recent years are emphatically summarized and evaluated. Finally, a discussion of future possible strategies is proposed to aim at further enhancing the thermoelectric properties of similar materials and deepen related researches.
Light Element Doping and Introducing Spin Entropy: an Effective Strategy for Enhancement of Thermoelectric Properties in BiCuSeO.

Abstract:The Seebeck coefficient and carrier mobility in reported doped BiCuSeO system are too small, which limits the improvement of thermoelectric performance. Here, we proposed a novel strategy for optimizing thermoelectric performance by increasing Seebeck coefficient and boosting carrier mobility. We demonstrate that light element Li doping boosts carrier mobility (7.39 cm2 V-1 s-1) due to largely reduced carrier scattering, which results in about 2-fold increase in carrier mobility as compared with reported Bi0.875Ba0.125CuSeO through modulation doping or microstructure texturing. Moreover, the Seebeck coefficient remarkably increases by contribution of spin entropy induced by magnetic ions Mn incorporation. The enhancement of Seebeck coefficient coupled with enhanced electrical conductivity result in high power factor. Furthermore, nanoprecipitates and dual-atom point defect leads to a significant reduction of lattice thermal conductivity. Therefore, a high ZT value of 0.9 was achieved at 873 K through optimizing power factor while maintaining low thermal conductivity. Our findings provide a new perspective for designing prospective thermoelectric materials.

Abstract:This work revealed that BiCuSeO oxyselenide is a potential oxide-based thermoelectric material, whose dimensionless figure of merit (ZT) reaches similar to 0.70 at 773 K. High phase-purity BiCuSeO polycrystalline materials with fine grains were synthesized by a facile method combining a solid-state reaction and spark plasma sintering. Purifying the constitutive phase and reducing the grain sizes by introducing a high-energy ball milling process before spark plasma sintering were found to be effective in property enhancement. The resultant single-phased BiCuSeO sample derived from ball-milled powders shows good electrical conductivity above 4.0 x 10(3) S m(-1) and a large Seebeck coefficient above 200 mu V K-1. This compound has a low thermal conductivity (similar to 0.5 W m(-1) K-1), which is associated with its low phonon transport speed and Young's modulus. Results indicated that BiCuSeO-based materials are promising for energy conversion applications in the moderate temperature range.

Abstract:Oxide-based thermoelectric materials such as BiCuSeO have been researched for several years to optimize their thermoelectric performance. In this article, we present a series of Zn-doped BiCuSeO ceramics produced by fine processing. The results indicate that Zn doping can effectively increase the power factor through Cu vacancies along with a suppressed thermal conductivity through increased phonon scattering at ZnSe impurity phase. Consequently, a higher ZT value of 0.65 at 873 K is obtained for 10% Zn doping, being about three times larger than that of the pure sample.

Abstract:Compared with traditional thermoelectric materials, layered oxyselenide thermoelectric materials consist of nontoxic and lower-cost elements and have better chemical and thermal stability. Recently, several studies on n-type layered oxyselenide thermoelectric materials, including BiCuSeO, Bi2O2Se and Bi6Cu2Se4O6, were reported, which stimulates us to comprehensively summarize these researches. In this short review, we begin with various attempts to realize an n-type BiCuSeO system. Then, we summarize several methods to optimize the thermoelectric performance of Bi2O2Se, including carrier engineering, band engineering, microstructure design, et al. Next, we introduce a new type of layered oxyselenide Bi6Cu2Se4O6, and n-type transport properties can be obtained through halogen doping. At last, we propose some possible research directions for n-type layered oxyselenide thermoelectric materials.

Abstract:BiCuSeO oxyselenide is a promising oxide-based thermoelectric material in the moderate temperature range, but the low electrical conductivity inhibits its further application in the field of thermoelectric materials. In this paper, we report on the effects that composite structures have an enhancement to the electrical conductivity of BiCuSeO. Here, a series of two-phase nanocomposites comprising of BiCuSeO and Cu2Se have been synthesized by SPS. Images obtained via electron microscope reveal that the two constituents form the unique composites while retaining their individual morphological identities. Owing to the composite structure with a highly conductive nanoscale of copper selenides and sub-micrometer scale BiCuSeO, an enhancement to the thermoelectric performance is achieved. The ZT at 823 K is increased from 0.33 for pristine BiCuSeO to 0.44 by inserting 20 vol% Cu2Se. Our results state that the composite structure is an effective method to enhance the performance of BiCuSeO. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:A significant enhancement of thermoelectric performance in layered oxyselenides BiCuSeO was achieved. The electrical conductivity and Seebeck coefficient of BiCu(1-x)SeO (x = 0-0.1) indicate that the carriers were introduced in the (Cu(2)Se(2))(2-) layer by Cu deficiencies. The maximum of electrical conductivity is 3 × 10(3) S m(-1) for Bicu(0.975)Seo at 650 °C, much larger than 470 S m(-1) for pristine BiCuSeO. Featured with very low thermal conductivity (∼0.5 W m(-1) K(-1)) and a large Seebeck coefficient (+273 μV K(-1)), ZT at 650 °C is significantly increased from 0.50 for pristine BiCuSeO to 0.81 for BiCu(0.975)SeO by introducing Cu deficiencies, which makes it a promising candidate for medium temperature thermoelectric applications.
Enhanced Thermoelectric Performance of Zn-doped Oxyselenides: BiCu1−x Zn X SeO

Abstract:High‐performance thermoelectric BiCuSeO ceramics have been prepared by solid state reaction combined with plasma activated sintering (PAS). Phase compositional and microstructural studies indicate composites having refined grain sizes (600–700 nm) with nanostructured ZnSe secondary phase. Our results reveal that Zn doping can lead to a large change in the carrier concentration (from 0.036 × 1020 cm−3 to 1.50 × 1020 cm−3), thus resulting in an increased electrical conductivity of three orders of magnitude at room temperature. The highest power factor of 4.21 µWcm−1K−2 at 873 K has been achieved by 10% Zn doping. On the other hand, the lattice thermal conductivity has been suppressed significantly due to refined grains, point defects and the nano‐inclusions of ZnSe phase. The dimensionless figure of merit (ZT) could reach up to 0.90 at 873 K in the BiCuSeO oxyselenides by the 10% Zn doping, which makes Zn‐doped BiCuSeO to be a promising candidate for thermoelectric applications.

Abstract:BiCuSeO-based oxyselenide compounds show promising thermoelectric properties, but its thermal stability and oxidation behavior are unknown, which were investigated in the present work with a PbTe-based thermoelectric alloy as a comparison. It was revealed that the BiCuSeO polycrystalline materials displayed much better thermal stability in air than the PbTe-based alloys that were severely oxidized at 573 K, resulting in a decreased density and significantly reduced electrical conductivity. Nevertheless, it was found that the BiCuSeO-based thermoelectric materials could not be used in air for a long time as a conventional oxide at high temperatures; apparent decomposition occurred in the BiCuSeO samples when heated at 773 K, although at 573 K the oxidation was limited to the surface accompanied by the formation of bismuth oxide. Abstract:Developing high-efficiency materials with earth-abundant and low-toxicity elements has become a popular trend in the field of thermoelectrics. Among these compounds, oxides and sulfides, the lighter, cheaper and green analogies of tellurides, have been extensively investigated and summarized as well defined classes. Nonetheless, the vast family of selenides with better electrical performance, lower thermal conductivity and higher thermoelectric efficiency have not been specially discussed. Here in this review, we present recent advances in binary and multinary selenide thermoelectric materials, covering traditional PbSe, liquid-like Cu2Se, layered SnSe, diamond-like and disordered multinary compounds. The features of selenides are discussed based on both environmental concerns and from the perspective of chemical bonding, transport properties and performance. Emphasis is put on the “composition-structure-processing-performance” relationship, and some interesting issues are addressed. Finally, challenges for thermoelectric selenides are discussed, and possible optimization strategies are also suggested.

Abstract:BiCuSeO is a promising thermoelectric material but needs a complicated synthesis process. In this work, fine‐grained BiCuSeO samples with high phase purity were synthesized by a combination of mechanical alloying (MA) and spark plasma sintering (SPS). It is found that BiCuSeO compounds can be formed by the reaction between BiSe and CuO, after BiSe appeared firstly when using Bi, Se, and CuO as raw materials during MA process. The electrical conductivity of the corresponding bulk attains a modest enhancement due to the significantly increased carrier concentration although the carrier mobility was reduced compared with the sample prepared by classical solid‐state reaction. The total thermal conductivity is below 0.7 W/mK in the whole measured temperature range, which is attributable to the increased defects and gain boundaries. As a result, a relatively high ZT value of 0.50 was obtained for the pristine BiCuSeO sample. In addition, when Bi was replaced by Ca element, the electrical transport property of the samples was improved, resulting in an enhancement of ZT in the whole measured temperature range.
Boosting Thermoelectric Performance of BiCuSeO by Improving Carrier Mobility Through Light Element Doping and Introducing Nanostructures

Abstract:BiCuSeO oxyselenides are promising thermoelectric materials because of their high stability and high thermoelectric performance. Here, a new approach is proposed that Li and Ca are incorporated into BiCuSeO to achieve synergistically optimized electrical and thermal transport properties. Arising from partial substitutions of Bi3+ by Ca2+ and Li+, the carrier concentration significantly increased because of massively introduced hole carriers. More importantly, we reveal that the carrier mobility can be enhanced by light element Li doping arising from largely reduced carrier scattering. The largest carrier mobility value reaches 8.06 cm(2)V(-1)s(-1), which is significantly enhanced as compared with previously reported doped BiCuSeO. As a result, the electrical conductivity increases to 288 Scm(-1) and the power factor reaches as high as 804 mu W m(-1)K(-2) at room temperature in Bi0.84Li0.08Ca0.08CuSeO, which is about 288 and 53 folds as compared with pristine BiCuSeO, respectively. Furthermore, Li and Ca codoping not only leads to dual-atomic point-defects scattering, but also can effectively scatter high-frequency phonons through introducing calcium oxide nanoprecipitates, resulting in a low lattice thermal conductivity (0.54 Wm(-1) K-1 at 873 K). The combination of optimized power factor and thermal conductivity contributes to a high thermoelectric figure of merit ZT (similar to 0.9 at 873 K) in Bi0.88Li0.06Ca0.06CuSeO. Abstract:A high-performance thermoelectric oxyselenide BiCuSeO ceramic with ZT > 1.1 at 823 K and higher average ZT value (ZTave ≈0.8) is obtained. Abstract:Layered oxyselenides have been widely investigated as promising thermoelectric materials due to their unique merits such as super‐lattice structural features and intrinsic complexity, which contributes to low thermal conductivity and easily controllable electrical properties. Newly developed Bi2LnO4Cu2Se2 (Ln stands for lanthanide) oxyselenides are found to be potential thermoelectric systems since they have excellent electrical conductivity over 103 S cm−1. In this work, unique energy and time‐saving method combined self‐propagating high‐temperature synthesis (SHS) with spark plasma sintering (SPS) is adopted to successfully prepare a highly pure Bi2LnO4Cu2Se2 instead of a traditional solid‐state reaction. To explore the most suitable lanthanide for Bi2LnO4Cu2Se2, thermoelectric performance in a wide temperature range (300 to 923 K) of Bi2LnO4Cu2Se2 (Ln = Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, and Er) is deeply evaluated and studied. Ultimately, with a relatively high electrical conductivity, moderate Seebeck coefficient, and extremely low thermal conductivity, a maximum ZT value of ≈0.27 at 923K is achieved in Bi2DyO4Cu2Se2, which is 4 times larger than that of the ever‐reported Bi2YO4Cu2Se2 and proves a potential thermoelectric system for further investigation. This work may provide some enlightenment and broaden the horizon in finding new thermoelectric materials, especially for complex layered compounds. A series of layered oxyselenides Bi2LnO4Cu2Se2 (Ln = Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, and Er) are synthesized by a time‐saving method. The origin of the excellent thermoelectric performance of Bi2LnO4Cu2Se2 is thoroughly investigated. A maximum ZT value of ≈0.27 at 923K is achieved in Bi2DyO4Cu2Se2, which proves to be a potential thermoelectric system for further investigation.

Abstract:BiCuSeO oxyselenides are promising thermoelectric materials, yet further thermoelectric figure of merit ZT improvement is largely limited by the inferior electrical transport properties. The established literature on these materials shows only one power factor maximum upon carrier concentration optimization, which is typical for most thermoelectric semiconductors. Surprisingly, we found three power factor maxima when doping Bi with Pb. Based on our first-principles calculations, numerical modeling, and experimental investigation, we attribute the three maxima to the Fermi energy optimization, band convergence, and compositing effect due to in situ formed PbSe precipitates. Consequently, three ZT peaks of 0.9, 1.1, and 1.3 at 873 K are achieved for 4, 10, and 14 at.% Pb-doped samples, respectively, revealing the significance of complex electronic structure and multiple roles of Pb in BiCuSeO. The results establish an accurate band structure characterization for BiCuSeO and identify the role of band convergence and nanoprecipitation as the driving mechanism for high ZT.

Abstract:A high-performance thermoelectric BiCuSeO oxyselenides has been prepared by a simple fabrication approach. Phase composition and microstructure analysis indicate that the obtained ceramic samples are almost BiCuSeO phase with plate structure. Our results show that Pb-doped BiCuSeO bulks have good electrical conductivity, large Seebeck coefficient, and low thermal conductivity. A large power factor similar to 672/Wm/K2 at 573K can be observed in the BiCuSeO ceramic by the 10% Pb doping, and the dimensionless figure of merit (ZT) can reach 0.95 at 873K, which makes them promising candidates for thermoelectric applications.

Abstract:Thermoelectric technology has been an alternative for waste heat recovery due to its ability to realize direct conversion between heat energy and electricity. As a promising n-type thermoelectric material, layer-structured Bi2O2Se has been widely investigated in the past decades. Bi2O2Se has excellent merits including extremely high carrier mobility, large Seebeck coefficient, low lattice thermal conductivity, low cost, as well as good thermal and chemical stability. Up to now, reviews especially regarding Bi2O2Se-based thermoelectric material are rare. Hence, in this review, the pristine features of Bi2O2Se as a thermoelectric material were systematically summarized from crystal structure and microstructure, electronic band structure, as well as phonon spectra. Then, the recent advances in optimization strategies for Bi2O2Se were updated and discussed, which were categorized into effective doping, texturing by shear exfoliation, and compositing with other materials. In the end, the current challenges and possible perspectives were highlighted toward further developments of Bi2O2Se.
Enhanced Thermoelectric Properties in Bicuseo Oxyselenides Via Zn and S Dual-Site Substitution

Abstract:We report on the effect of Zn and S dual-site substitution on the thermoelectric properties of Bi1−x Zn x CuSeO1−x S x (x = 0, 0.025, 0.05, 0.075) oxyselenides prepared by conventional two-step solid-state reaction followed by inductive hot-pressing sintering. BiCuSeO phase with lath-like microstructures was observed for all samples. Upon Zn and S dual-site substitution, the electrical conductivity at 750 K was improved from 28.9 S cm−1 for pure BiCuSeO to 43.3 S cm−1 for Bi0.975Zn0.025CuSeO0.975S0.025 with highest Seebeck coefficient of 360 μV K−1 for Bi0.95Zn0.05CuSeO0.95S0.05. A maximum power factor of 4.6 μW cm−1 K−2 was achieved for Bi0.95Zn0.05CuSeO0.95S0.05 at 750 K due to its moderate electrical conductivity and high Seebeck coefficient. As the enhanced power factor compensates for the slight increase in the total thermal conductivity, the dimensionless figure of merit ZT reached a maximum value of 0.68 for Bi0.95Zn0.05CuSeO0.95S0.05 at 750 K, approximately 1.7 times larger than that of pristine BiCuSeO.
Cu2Se thermoelectrics: property, methodology, and device

Abstract:In the last decade, high-performance Cu2Se thermoelectric materials and devices are attracting increasing research interest. In this review, we firstly summarize fundamentals of Cu2Se, including crystal structure, band structure, phase transition, and intrinsic thermoelectric performance. Then, we compare and overview the effectiveness of enhancing electrical transports and reducing lattice thermal conductivity on boosting figure of merit, zT of Cu2Se and found that zT enhancement of Cu2Se should be mainly attributed to reduced lattice thermal conductivity. After that, we highlight the chemical stability and mechanical properties of Cu2Se and its thermoelectric modules. In the end, we point out future research directions in the field of Cu2Se thermoelectrics. This review fills the gap of overview on the progress and challenge of Cu2Se thermoelectrics, and provide a new perspective to achieve Cu2Se-based thermoelectric materials with high thermoelectric performance.
