Abstract:Design of high-efficiency and stable platinum-free electrocatalysts for electrochemical water splitting is crucial and challenging for clean energy development. Herein, we present a kind of bimetallic electrocatalyst (FeRuNG) by anchoring bimetallic nanoparticles on N-doped porous graphene through pyrolysis of iron and ruthenium sources in the presence of the nitrogen-doped porous graphene. Impressively, the optimum FeRuNG electrocatalyst shows a low overpotential for both hydrogen evolution reaction (83 mV) and oxygen evolution reaction (334 mV) due to its layered porous structure and synergistic effect of bimetallic nanoparticles. Meanwhile, the FeRuNG bifunctional electrocatalyst achieves a current density of 10 mA cm–2 at a voltage of 1.81 V with excellent stability during the overall water-splitting reaction. This study provides a new view of the exploitation of efficient platinum-free bifunctional electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Encapsulating non-precious metals within graphene layers represents a promising strategy to substitute precious metal catalyst towards the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The surface electronic structure of graphene can significantly affect the OER performance, which depends on the types of encapsulated metal and their proportion but it still lacks efficient methods to modulate them. Herein, we report a universal strategy to encapsulate FeNi binary metal nanoalloy within ultrathin graphene layers, which can efficiently optimize the electronic properties and the OER activity on the graphene surface via modulating Fe/Ni ratio. The optimized catalyst with Fe/Ni of 1 shows a low overpotential of 280 mV at the current density of 10 mA cm(-2). Both the catalytic activity and durability of the catalyst are better than the commercial IrO2. Theoretical calculations indicate that the adsorption strength of each intermediate on graphene can be optimally balanced by modulating the metal proportion of the encapsulated FeNi, leading to an enhanced OER activity with reduced overpotential on the graphene surface.

Abstract:It is of great importance to rationally design and develop earth-abundant nanocatalysts for high-efficiency water electrolysis. Herein, NiFe layered double hydroxide was in situ grown hydrothermally on a 3D graphite felt (NiFe LDH/GF) as a high-efficiency catalyst in facilitating the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). In 1.0 M KOH, NiFe LDH/GF requires a low overpotential of 214 mV to deliver a geometric current density of 50 mA cm–2 (η50 mA cm–2 = 214 mV), surpassing that NiFe LDH supported on a 2D graphite paper (NiFe LDH/GP; η50 mA cm–2 = 301 mV). Abstract:Currently, precious metal group materials are known as the efficient and widely used oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalysts. The exorbitant prices and scarcity of the precious metals have stimulated scale exploration of alternative non-precious metal catalysts with low-cost and high performance. Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) are a promising precursor to prepare cost-effective and high-performance catalysts because they possess abundant micropores and nitrogen self-doping after pyrolysis, which can accelerate the electron transfer and serve as active sites for efficient OER. Herein, we developed a new highly active NiFeMn-layered double hydroxide (NFM LDH) based electrocatalyst for OER. Through building NFM hydroxide/oxyhydroxide heterojunction and incorporation of conductive graphene, the prepared NFM LDH-based electrocatalyst delivers a low overpotential of 338 mV at current density of 10 mA cm−2 with a small Tafel slope of 67 mV dec−1, which are superior to those of commercial RuO2 catalyst for OER. The LDH/OOH heterojunction involves strong interfacial coupling, which modulates the local electronic environment and boosts the kinetics of charge transfer. In addition, the high valence Fe3+ and Mn3+ species formed after NaOH treatment provide more active sites and promote the Ni2+ to higher oxidation states during the O2 evolution. Moreover, graphene contributes a lot to the reduction of charge transfer resistance. The combining effects have greatly enhanced the catalytic ability for OER, demonstrating that the synthesized NFM LDH/OOH heterojunction with graphene linkage can be practically applied as a high-performance electrocatalyst for oxygen production via water splitting.

Abstract:Highly active, durable and cost-effective electrocatalysts for water oxidation to evolve oxygen gas hold a key to a range of renewable energy solutions including water splitting and rechargeable metal-air batteries. Here, we report the synthesis of ultrathin nickel iron layered double hydroxide nanoplates on mildly oxidized multi-walled carbon nanotubes. Incorporation of Fe into the nickel hydroxide induced the formation of NiFe-layered double hydroxide. The nanoplates were covalently attached to a network of nanotubes, affording excellent electrical wiring to the nanoplates. The ultra-thin Ni-Fe layered double hydroxide nanoplates/carbon nanotube complex was found to exhibit unusually high electro-catalytic activity and stability for oxygen evolution and outperformed commercial precious metal Ir catalysts.

Abstract:High-performance earth-abundant electrocatalysts for oxygen and hydrogen evolutions are highly desired for renewable energy but remain challenging. Herein, we have developed ultrathin NiFeP nanosheets, and merged the NiFeP with a 3D support of sponge-like strutted graphenes (SG). The synthesized NiFeP/SG, a porous monolith, shows efficient electrocatalytic activities for oxygen and hydrogen evolutions in alkaline electrolyte with low overpotentials of 218 and 115 mV, respectively. Using NiFeP/SG as direct catalytic electrodes, the overall water splitting requires a low cell voltage of 1.54 V to achieve a current of 10 mA cm(-2). The high performances result from the shifted-up d states caused by iron incorporation, the ultrathin NiFeP, and the 3D network structure of SG. Additionally, NiFeP/SG demonstrates excellent gravimetric catalytic activities, meaningful to aerospace and portables. The material opens the way to a universal robust lightweight catalytic electrode for a variety of applications in electrochemical energy storage and conversion.

Abstract:It still remains a challenge to simultaneously optimize the nanostructure and electronic structure of electrocatalysts of noble‐metal‐based electrocatalysts to improve their performance and reduce their noble metal loadings, in which the dispersion and activity of the noble metal components play an important role. A series of hybrids of noble metal nanocrystals (NMNCs) and two‐dimensional metal‐organic framework (2D MOF) nanosheets are designed and synthesized by a facile, fast, and general approach, in which NMNC dispersion is quickly mixed with MOF precursors at room temperature. The NMNCs/2D MOF hybrids, denoted as M‐Ni‐NS (M = Ir, Ru or Pt, etc.), are assembled by taking advantage of abundant O‐atom arrays on the surface the of 2D MOF nanosheets and they enable excellent dispersity and stability. Experimental and computational results show that the M‐O‐Ni bridging bonds realize successful tuning of the electronic structure of active sites and modify their activity. Taken together with the merits of the nanostructure of the 2D MOF support, this multiscale optimization strategy produces Ir‐Ni‐NS electrocatalysts with excellent performance for the oxygen evolution reaction, achieving a low overpotential of 270 mV at 10 mA cm−2 in alkaline media and long time stability.

Abstract:Major challenges encountered when trying to replace precious-metal-based electrocatalysts of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in acidic media are related to the low efficiency and stability of non-precious-metal compounds. Therefore, new concepts and strategies have to be devised to develop electrocatalysts that are based on earth-abundant materials. Herein, we report a hierarchical architecture that consists of ultrathin graphene shells (only 1-3 layers) that encapsulate a uniform CoNi nanoalloy to enhance its HER performance in acidic media. The optimized catalyst exhibits high stability and activity with an onset overpotential of almost zero versus the reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) and an overpotential of only 142 mV at 10 mA cm(-2) , which is quite close to that of commercial 40 % Pt/C catalysts. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that the ultrathin graphene shells strongly promote electron penetration from the CoNi nanoalloy to the graphene surface. With nitrogen dopants, they synergistically increase the electron density on the graphene surface, which results in superior HER activity on the graphene shells.

Electrocatalyst Derived from NiCu–MOF Arrays on Graphene Oxide Modified Carbon Cloth for Water Splitting

Abstract:Electrocatalysts are capable of transforming water into hydrogen, oxygen, and therefore into energy, in an environmentally friendly and sustainable manner. However, the limitations in the research of high performance catalysts act as an obstructer in the development of using water as green energy. Here, we report on a delicate method to prepare novel bimetallic metal organic framework derived electrocatalysts (C–NiCu–BDC–GO–CC) using graphene oxide (GO) modified carbon cloth as a 3D flexible and conductive substrate. The resultant electrocatalyst, C–NiCu–BDC–GO–CC, exhibited very low electron transfer resistance, which benefited from its extremely thin 3D sponge-like morphology. Furthermore, it showed excellent oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity, achieving 10 mA/cm2 at a low overpotential of 390 mV in 1 M KOH electrolyte with a remarkable durability of 10 h.

Abstract:Water oxidation to evolve oxygen is the key step in water splitting and is related to a variety of energy systems. Here, we report a facile electrodeposition process to immobilize nickel-iron layered double hydroxide (Ni-Fe LDH) nanoplates on three-dimensional electrochemically reduced graphene oxide (3D-ErGO) for water oxidation. This Ni-Fe LDH/3D-ErGO electrode has a three-dimensional interpenetrating network with Ni-Fe nanoplates uniformly decorated on graphene sheets. It has an electrochemically active surface area (EASA) 3.3 times that of conventional planar electrodes. The open porous structure of this electrode also makes its EASA fully accessible to the electrolyte for water oxidation and easy release of oxygen gas. This electrode can be directly used for catalysing the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline media without using a binder and conductive additive, exhibiting a small overpotential of 0.259 V and a low Tafel slope of 39 mV dec(-1). It outperforms the precious IrO2 catalyst in activity, kinetics, and electrochemical stability.

Abstract:Developing highly active, cost-effective, and environmental friendly oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts facilitates various (photo)electrochemical processes. In this work, Fe3N nanoparticles encapsulated into N-doped graphene nanoshells (Fe3) as OER electrocatalysts in alkaline media were reported. Both the experimental and theoretical comparison between Fe3 and Fe3N/NG, specifically including in situ Mössbauer analyses, demonstrated that the NG nanoshells improved interfacial electron transfer process from Fe3N to NG to form high-valence Fe4+ ions (Fe4+@NG), thus modifying electronic properties of the outer NG shells and subsequently electron transfer from oxygen intermediate to NG nanoshells for OER catalytic process. Meanwhile, the NG nanoshells also protected Fe-based cores from forming OER inactive and insulated Fe2O3, leading to high OER stability. As a result, the as-formed Fe4+@NG shows one of the highest electrocatalytic efficiency among reported Fe-based OER electrocatalysts, which can as well highly improve the photoelectrochemical water oxidation when used as the co-catalysts for the Fe2O3 nanoarray photoanode.

Abstract:Electrocatalysts have been used to split water into hydrogen and oxygen for their advantages in clean energy technologies. To reduce cost and enhance stability of electrocatalysts, intensive works have been done in recent decades. Although research on noble‐metal free electrocatalysts has achieved great progress, their full water splitting performance is still incomparable to that of noble metal based catalysts. For this reason, reducing content of noble metal in catalysts is a more practical way. In this work, we report our recent progress on developing bifunctional electrocatalyst based on nitrogen doped graphene chainmail wrapped IrCo alloy particles on nitrogen doped graphene (NG@IrCo/NG). Benefited from strong interaction among iridium, cobalt and nitrogen doped graphene, impressively high electrocatalytic activity of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in both acid and alkaline solutions, which are comparable to commercially used Pt/C and IrO2 electrocatalysts respectively, is found. Catalyst with the structure of nitrogen doped chainmail wrapping on metal core is found to have highly stable full water splitting performance.

Abstract:Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) plays a key role in many renewable energy technologies such as water splitting and metal-air batteries. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are appealing to design efficient OER electrocatalysts, however, their intrinsic poor conductivity strongly hinders the activity. Here, we show a strategy to boost the OER activity of poor-conductive MOFs by confining them between graphene multilayers. The resultant NiFe-MOF//G gives a record-low overpotential of 106 mV to reach 10 mA cm(-2) and retains the activity over 150 h, which is in significant contrast to 399 mV of the pristine NiFe-MOF. We use X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and computations to demonstrate that the nanoconfinement from graphene multilayers not only forms highly reactive NiO6-FeO5 distorted octahedral species in MOF structure but also lowers limiting potential for water oxidation reaction. We also demonstrate that the strategy is applicable to other MOFs of different structures to largely enhance their electrocatalytic activities.

Abstract:Developing high-performance nonprecious electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is of great importance, but it remains a challenge. In this paper, we synthesize a porous monolithic catalytic electrode, which is transition metal nitride, Ni3FeN, constructed on a 3D network-like support of the strutted graphene foam (Ni3FeN/SG). The obtained Ni3FeN/SG electrode shows the excellent catalytic activity and the durability for OER in alkaline solution, owing to iron incorporation, high electrical conductivity and 3D network-like structure of strutted graphene. It requires small overpotential (226 mV) to actuate 10 mA cm−2, superior to most recently developed catalysts and commercial RuO2. The fabrication strategy provides a substantial way to expand 3D porous monolithic electrodes for various electrocatalytic applications.

Abstract:Electrocatalysts for anode or cathode reactions are at the heart of electrochemical energy conversion and storage devices. Molecular design of carbon based nanomaterials may create the next generation electrochemical catalysts for broad applications. Herein, we present the synthesis of a three-dimensional (3D) nanostructure with a large surface area (784 m(2) g(-1)) composed of nitrogen doped (up to 8.6 at.%) holey graphene. The holey structure of graphene sheets (similar to 25% of surface area is attributed to pores) engenders more exposed catalytic active edge sites. Nitrogen doping further improves catalytic activity, while the formation of the 3D porous nanostructure significantly reduces graphene nanosheet stacking and facilitates the diffusion of reactants/electrolytes. The three factors work together, leading to superb electrochemical catalytic activities for both hydrazine oxidation (its current generation ability is comparable to that of 10 wt% Pt-C catalyst) and oxygen reduction (its limiting current is comparable to that of 20 wt% Pt-C catalyst) with four-electron transfer processes and excellent durability.
