Abstract:An analog experiment, which simulates the brownian motion of an overdamped particle (with damping γ) in a fluctuating double-well potential (the linewidth of the multiplicative noise beingλ) is built up. According to Graham and Schenzle, the mean square value of the space variable x is a lineary dicreasing function of the noise intensity with slope proportional to 1/(1+R), where Rγ/λ. In the weak-noise region this prevision is shown to be correct. In the large-noise region, on the contrary, there are significant discrepancies between the steady-state distribution of x, as predicted by all the current procedure of adiabatic elimination and the results of the analog experiment. It is shown the escape processes from a well, strictly forbidden by these procedures, nevertheless do take place with a rate, the analytical expression of which is well supported by the results of a computer calculation.
