Abstract:The precise estimation of bus dwell time (BDT) is immensely important as it directly impacts the reliability of bus schedules and the accuracy of arrival time predictions. Various factors—such as the behavior of buses merging into the main traffic flow, uneven distribution of passengers on board, and frequent bus queues—jointly lead to a high variability of the BDT. To achieve an accurate estimation of BDT across various stop types, a comprehensive BDT model is developed in this paper. First, based on berth occupancy, probabilistic models are constructed for different bus arrival scenarios, which are then used to study corresponding bus queuing times. Second, the Bureau of Public Roads function is employed to characterize the obstruction effect occupants on the bus impose on boarding passengers. Combined with this function, a bus service time model is proposed considering the bus opening doors more than once and in-vehicle crowding. Third, the bus merging process is discretized to cope with the volatility of the time interval required for a bus to leave the bus bay. A Markov chain model is designed to calculate the time buses have to wait before merging. Case studies conducted in Qingdao, Chongqing and Beijing, China, demonstrate the effectiveness of the comprehensive model both during off-peak and peak periods. Furthermore, this paper incorporates overtaking rules into the comprehensive model to examine the influence of bus overtaking willingness and various overtaking policies on bus queuing times. Through numerical analysis, the key link is between willingness to overtake, service time and the likelihood of bus overtaking is disclosed.

Bus Alighting Stop Estimation Using Trip-chain and Bayesian Methodology.

Abstract:In order to accurately predict the situation of passengers getting off the bus at a bus stop in the future, prediction models based on different Bayesian methods are proposed. Each model can be divided into two stages. The first stage is to predict which bus stops need to get off for a partial ride based on travel chain assumptions. In the second stage, three models based on the naive Bayes model, the semi-naive Bayes model and the Bayesian network are sequentially trained according to the prediction results of the first stage. The three models were tested and validated using data obtained from multiple bus routes at specific locations. The test results show that, compared with the prediction cases based on the travel chain assumption, the improved models have better prediction accuracy and are more suitable for the randomness of the real situation. In addition, in the comparison of the three models, the prediction model based on Bayesian network has better predictive ability in general, and can more accurately predict the time of passengers getting off the bus in real situations, and its prediction results are more realistic, followed by Predictive models for semi-naive Bayesian and Naive Bayesian models.

Abstract:Queues of batch arrivals and bulk service including balking and reneging behaviors of customers are commonly observed in real life. This study formulates queues of this type using compound Poisson processes and determines some key probabilistic measures. Analytical investigation is undertaken yielding a range of mathematical results. The developed mathematical model and approaches apply to a variety of practical queueing processes that are featured with bulk queues, balking, and reneging. A bus bridging response to rail disruption is considered as an application example. And large-scale Monte-Carlo simulations are conducted to demonstrate the mathematical results. Bus Travel Time Reliability Analysis: a Case Study

Abstract:The travel time reliability of buses has become increasingly important for public transit companies. In this study, a novel approach is proposed to evaluate and analyse the travel time reliability of bus services provided by TransLink in Queensland, Australia. In view of their stochastic features, the two components of travel time – dwell time and driving time – are represented by discrete distributed and normally distributed random variables respectively. Accordingly, the travel time could be described by Gaussian mixture models. Based on the proposed model, impact analysis shows that bus line reliability would increase by around 15% if onboard top-up for ‘go cards' (electronic tickets) was not offered by TransLink. It was found that not providing this top-up method would not significantly harm the benefit of go card users, but it would substantially increase the total social benefit thanks to improved bus line reliability.

Abstract:Urban rail networks play an important role in urban transportation. An unexpected disruption in a rail network can cause a significant degradation in the level of service. When a disruption occurs, it is crucial to provide quick and efficient substitution of services via alternative transportation modes, including bridging disconnected railway stations using bus services. The amount of disruptions, surprisingly, is high; for example, there are more than 15 000 disruptions in six months in Melbourne, Australia. The provision of bus bridging services calls for proper planning and designing of a temporary bus bridging network considering limited bus and driver resources, and prevailing urban traffic conditions. Among a number of tasks concerning bus bridging, the demand modeling of affected train passengers is a prerequisite for a satisfactory bus bridging practice. This paper explores this demand modeling problem based on the theory of compound Poisson processes and formulates it as a bulk queuing problem involving balking and reneging. The problem is carefully studied, with a series of analytical results delivered. Large-scale Monte Carlo simulations were designed and implemented to demonstrate a range of mathematical conclusions.

Abstract:The bus operating characteristics are analyzed at the bus bay using the trajectories depending on the current status of buses. On this basis, a method for calculating the capacity of the bus bay is developed, which considers the queue probability, the dwell time distribution and the waiting time for a gap in the traffic stream at the curb lane. Then, the distribution model of the dwell time is developed using the survey data of Hangzhou city. And the log-normal distribution shows the best fitting performance. The capacities of the bus bay are computed with the Matlab program under different distribution parameters of the dwell time and different traffic volumes at the curb lane. The results show a large range of traffic capacity as the distribution parameters and traffic volumes change. Finally, the proposed model is validated by measurement and simulation, and the average relative errors between the calculated values and the measured and simulated values are 8.78% and 5.28%, respectively.

Abstract:Dwell time at a bus stop is one of the major components of bus travel time, and it is highly correlated with numbers of boarding and alighting passengers. With more resources from federal, state, and local governments currently being devoted to improving public transit services, transit ridership rates are expected to increase. Consequently, dwell time needs to be modeled in terms of ridership to allow accurate estimations of bus travel time. Typically, passengers can board a bus only through the front door but can choose to exit the vehicle through either the front or rear door. To estimate dwell time accurately, this study used data collected from Florida's Broward County Transit system to develop a binary door choice model predicting the proportion of alighting passengers who will use the front or rear door to disembark from the bus. Because the model explicitly considered passengers disembarking through the front and rear doors as well as passengers boarding through the front door, it was more effective in quantifying transit dwell time than the existing simulation algorithms available in CORSIM and VISSIM.

Abstract:A majority of the past studies on bus dwell time have been carried out in the context of developed countries, and the dwell time prediction models established in literature adopted the fixed-parameter assumption. The variations due to human factors such as passenger and driver behavior are not reflected under a fixed-parameter framework. This paper presents a methodology for rational estimation of passenger boarding and alighting time in the context of an emerging country using both fixed-parameter and random-parameter models. The methodology was demonstrated with a case study in the Kolkata metro area of India. The results established that the boarding and alighting time varies significantly across bus type, in-vehicle crowding, and size of the passenger group. In this context, random-parameter models were found to outperform fixed-parameter models in capturing the heterogeneity in bus and demand characteristics. The models were validated successfully with statistically acceptable errors.

Abstract:Based on the fact that demand distributes discretely along bus route, a dynamic programming algorithm of optimizing bus stop spacing was developed. Every intersection and large demand entry point along the bus route were treated as a candidate stop location. With the information of land use and development intensity provided by GIS, passengers' demand surveyed or forecasted was distributed into every segment in the route. Considering passengers' walking time, on-vehicle traveling time, and buses' traveling time, the objective function was established. The dynamic programming algorithm was constructed to optimize bus stop locations. The model was applied to a bus route planning in Suzhou, and the results show that the optimizing method is efficient.

Abstract:Urban bus companies have collected a tremendous amount of travel data from passengers in the past years. In spite of great value for bus schedule optimization, these data have not been fully exploited. In this paper, we leverage hundreds of millions of bus transaction records, generated when passengers board and alight, to infer time-dependent traffic and customer demand. When the traffic and demand information are available, we build an optimal model to schedule the departure time of each bus service with the objective of minimizing the average waiting time. Experimental results show that compared with the existing bus scheduling system, our model can help reduce the waiting time by a wide margin.

Abstract:In order to improve the precision of calculation of bus stop capacity,the servicing process of buses at on-line stops was analyzed using the bus trajectories according to metropolitan bus operation status.On this basis,a method for computing on-line bus stop capacity was developed taking into account both the queue probability and the dwell time distribution.Then,the dwell time distribution function was fitted to the field-observed data of Hangzhou city;Kolmogorov-Smirnov(K-S) test shows that the log-normal distribution has the best goodness of fit,with the K-S value of two traffic periods being 0.083 9 and 0.050 6,respectively.The capacities of three kinds of bus stops were computed by MATLAB programming with different parameters of dwell time distribution.The results indicate that the capacity of bus stop with different berths decreases from 44.4% to 47.3% as the natural logarithmic mean of the dwell time μ increases.In addition,the capacity of bus stops was obtained by simulation using VISSIM software.The average relative error between the calculated and simulated results is 6.5%.

Abstract:Accurate predictions of bus service time are a prerequisite to improve the efficiency of bus transit. Field observations identified the degree of passenger crowding on the bus as one of the primary causes for the unpredictability of passengers’ average boarding time (ABT). Consequently, the internal areas of buses were divided for the first time to assess the impact of the passenger density distribution (PDD) on the ABT, using field data. An effective BPR function was proposed that accurately predicts the passengers’ ABT. Then, to show the influence of passenger movement preference and density distribution on ABT, a new floor field model was developed. Calibration and validation results indicate that the model can reproduce the dynamic moving process of passengers’ distribution on the bus and clarify the influence of PDD on ABT. Finally, three bus design strategies are proposed to enhance boarding efficiency, and the simulation results show that the optimal strategy improves passenger ABT and improve the operational performance of bus transit. These findings provide theoretical support for bus design as well as for bus operation.

Abstract:An accurate estimation of bus dwell time (BDT) is important as it directly influences the prediction of vehicles’ arrival times at bus stops and hence, the reliability of their services. Developing an efficient method to estimate BDT has received significant attention in the literature as numerous studies have been conducted on this topic. This paper provides an overview of research works conducted in the past on bus dwell time. It covers three aspects: first methods used in the literature to estimate BDT, second factors influencing BDT and third methods used in the literature to collect data. The methods used in the literature to estimate BDT are broadly classified and discussed under three categories namely, regression-based models, probabilistic and time series models and artificial intelligence-based models along with their strengths and weaknesses. The influence of different policy measures related to characteristics of bus, passengers, time-of-day, transit, and route are discussed. The research trends reveal an increasing tendency to employ more advanced methods for data collection (using GPS, APC and AVL) and modelling (e.g. using machine learning-based methods).

Estimating Transit Vehicle Dwell Times at Bus Stops

Abstract:This work presents a quantitative approach to estimate the total time spent in the vicinity of a bus stop including the deceleration time, the boarding and alighting time (developed in an earlier study), the acceleration time, and re-entry time (time required to merge into the adjacent lane). Different statistical models were used to compute the deceleration, acceleration and merge times. Typical deceleration and acceleration levels were computed using kinematic equations that were then used to compute both the deceleration and acceleration times. The adopted method to estimate both the deceleration time and the acceleration time was validated utilizing transit data from Blacksburg Transit (BT) using the mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) and root mean square error (RMSE). The MAPE and RMSE values were calculated to be 0.3 and 13.3 percent for the deceleration time and 0.42 and 2.72 percent for the acceleration time, respectively. The re-entry time was estimated to be a function of the adjacent roadway traffic density using both a multiple linear regression and Bayesian regression approach. Both methods showed consistency in estimating the merge-time model coefficients. The proposed models can be integrated with transit applications to estimate transit vehicle travel times.

Abstract:The impacts of bus running and stopping on the traffic flow were analyzed considering the real operation state of buses at the road segment. On the case of light traffic, treating the bus as a moving service station, a delay model by buses was established based on the queuing theory and the theory of gap acceptance. On the case of heavy traffic, a delay model by buses was established based on the arrival and service representation of vehicles. A solution example was demonstrated. The obtained results provide a theoretical support for determination of the reasonable travel time functions and evaluation of service level at the road segment.

Abstract:This paper develops an application-oriented model to estimate waiting times as a function of bus departure time intervals. Bus stops are classified into Type A and B depending on whether they are connected with urban rail transit systems. Distributions of passenger arrival rates are analyzed based on field data for Beijing. The results indicate that the best fits for the distribution of passenger arrival rates for Type A and B bus stops are the lognormal distribution and gamma distribution, respectively. By analyzing relationships between passenger arrival rates and bus departure time intervals, it is demonstrated that parameters of the passenger arrival rate distribution can be expressed by the average and coefficient of variation of bus departure time intervals in functional relationships. The validation shows that the model provides a reliable estimation of the average passenger waiting time based on readily available bus departure time intervals.

Abstract:A public transit network differs from a general road network. The passenger flow of bus stops and the limited capacity of buses have a greater effect than road traffic flow on the running time of buses. As a result, conventional public transit assignment models that adopt the econometric road network path concept have numerous limitations. Based on the analysis, the generalized bus trip time chain is analyzed, and the concept of a congestion function is proposed to describe the relationship between trip resistance and flow in the current paper. On the premise of this study, the transit network resistance function is formed and the multiroute probit-based loading model is established. With using STOCH or Dial's algorithm, the process of distribution is proposed. Finally, the model is applied to the transit network assignment of Deqing Town in Zhejiang Province. The result indicates that the model can be applied to practical operations with high-precision results.

Abstract:This paper introduces two multilinear models that compute bus passenger boarding/alighting (BA) times at bus stops using empirical data (8341 empirical observations) from King County Metro in Seattle, Washington. The first model is a classical frequentist model, while the second is a stochastic model developed using bootstrapping together with a Cholesky decomposition. Three variables are considered in the aforementioned models to estimate passenger BA times, namely; the number of alighting passengers, the number of boarding passengers, and the number of passengers on board the bus. The models show that passenger BA times increase with an increase in all three variables (i.e. positive model coefficients). The Cholesky decomposition technique was applied to bootstrapped data to capture the model coefficient correlations with the use of only nine parameters (coefficient means, variances, and correlations) while capturing the stochasticity observed in the empirical data.

Abstract:Accurate forecasting of bus travel time and its uncertainty is critical to service quality and operation of transit systems: it can help passengers make informed decisions on departure time, route choice, and even transport mode choice, and it also support transit operators on tasks such as crew/vehicle scheduling and timetabling. However, most existing approaches in bus travel time forecasting are based on deterministic models that provide only point estimation. To this end, we develop in this paper a Bayesian probabilistic model for forecasting bus travel time and estimated time of arrival (ETA). To characterize the strong dependencies/interactions between consecutive buses, we concatenate the link travel time vectors and the headway vector from a pair of two adjacent buses as a new augmented variable and model it with a mixture of constrained multivariate Gaussian distributions. This approach can naturally capture the interactions between adjacent buses (e.g., correlated speed and smooth variation of headway), handle missing values in data, and depict the multimodality in bus travel time distributions. Next, we assume different periods in a day share the same set of Gaussian components, and we use time-varying mixing coefficients to characterize the systematic temporal variations in bus operation. For model inference, we develop an efficient Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) algorithm to obtain the posterior distributions of model parameters and make probabilistic forecasting. We test the proposed model using the data from two bus lines in Guangzhou, China. Results show that our approach significantly outperforms baseline models that overlook bus-to-bus interactions, in terms of both predictive means and distributions. Besides forecasting, the parameters of the proposed model contain rich information for understanding/improving the bus service, for example, analyzing link travel time and headway correlation using covariance matrices and understanding time-varying patterns of bus fleet operation from the mixing coefficients.
