Abstract:In order to improve activity and acid-resistance of hydrogenationcatalysts, a series of nickel-based catalysts doped with Fe, Mn, Mo and supported by NaBH4-reduced activated carbon (AC-NaBH4) were prepared via an incipient wetness method. They were applied for the hydrogenation of phthalic anhydride, levulinic acid, maleic anhydride, succinic anhydride and trimellitic anhydride. The results show that the Fe doped catalyst containing 5%(wt) Fe and 15%(wt) Ni (5Fe-15Ni/AC-NaBH4) has satisfactory activity and stability, which can be attributed to the hydrophobic surface of AC-NaBH4 that prevents the resulted water from contacting metal surface. This makes the decrease of H+ concentration which eventually reduces Ni corrosion. Furthermore, XRD and TEM analysis prove the formation of Fe-Ni alloy, which is beneficial to the disperse of nickel particles and can effectively inhibit nickel corrosion.

Abstract:In this study, the deoxygenation of stearic acid over a series of Ni-based catalysts in the absence of hydrogen and solvents was investigated. Ni/Al2O3, Ni/TiO2, Ni/ZrO2, and Ni/AC (activated carbon) were synthesized using the wetness impregnation method, and Ni/AC showed the best activity for deoxygenation. X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, H-2 temperature-programmed reduction, and N-2 adsorption-desorption analyses revealed that Ni had an average particle size of about 9.6 nm with good crystallinity, the largest surface area and strong Ni-carrier interactions in Ni/AC. These properties of Ni/AC contributed to its good deoxygenation activity. Ni/AC produced hydrocarbons (71.4% yield) such as heptadecane, heptadecene, aromatics, and cracking paraffins under optimized reaction conditions. Furthermore, it was found that the deoxygenation of stearic acid over Ni/AC in the absence of hydrogen and solvent proceeds mainly via decarbonylation.

Abstract:A combined experimental and theoretical investigation on the hydrogenation of acrylonitrile catalyzed by Ni and Pd is presented. The experiments were conducted in an autoclave and monitored by a computer remote, while the Ni(111) and Pd(111) surface models were employed for theoretical study using density functional theory. Acrylonitrile is preferentially adsorbed on both surfaces through all atoms of the molecular backbone interacting with metal surfaces. For the hydrogenation of the vinyl moiety on Ni, the preferred pathway is initiated by formation of the C1-H bond, while on the Pd surface this step is alternated by making a C2-H bond. Comparison of the reaction pathways for Ni(111) and Pd(111) indicates lower energy barriers for further hydrogenation of the nitrile group on the latter, thus in line with the experimentally observed higher selectivity of the hydrogenation of vinyl catalyzed by Ni.
Catalytic Decarboxylation and Aromatization of Oleic Acid over Ni/AC Without an Added Hydrogen Donor

Abstract:Ni/AC (nickel on active carbon) catalysts with different Ni loadings were synthesized and studied for the decarboxylation and aromatization of oleic acid in the absence of H2 or hydrogen donors. Without the use of hydrogen source, the whole deoxygenation process became more economical. Moreover, oleic acid can be saturated using the H2 derived from the production of aromatics, which were also considered as the critical component in aviation biofuels. The structure and properties of the catalysts were investigated using X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and temperature-programmed desorption of CH3COOH and CO. The experimental and characterization results revealed that 30% Ni/AC had a higher adsorption capacity of CH3COOH among the other Ni/AC catalysts and highly dispersed and small Ni particles, providing a heptadecane yield of 40.7%. It also contained 13.8% aromatics, which fulfills the requirement of aviation fuels. This Ni/AC catalyst showed good stability even after being reused thrice.
Synthesis of Propionitrile by Acrylonitrile Hydrogenation over the Ni Catalyst in the Gas-solid Phase

Abstract:To study the catalysts for synthesis of Propionitrile by Acrylonitrile in the gas phase,a sort of Ni catalysts were prepared by the impregnation method.The factors that influence on catalyst performance were investigated,including the loading capacity of Ni-Cu-Zn,reaction temperature,reaction pressure,liquid hourly space velocity(LHSV) and mole ratio of H2 to acrylonitrile.The experimental results showed that when using the catalyst of mass fraction 5.7％ Ni,1.4％ Cu and 1.4％ Zn,under the reaction conditions of reaction temperature 150℃,reaction pressure 0.5 MPa,LHSV 0.24 h-1,and ratio of H2 to acrylonitrile 12,the percent conversion of acrylonitrile was 96％,the selectivity of the propionitrile was 94.9％.
Ni-Exchanged Y-Zeolite. an Efficient Heterogeneous Catalyst for Acetylene Hydrocarboxylation

Abstract:A series of Ni-modified Y-zeolites with varying Ni loading in the presence of cupric salt as promoter were studied for acetylene hydrocarboxylation performed in a batch reactor. The catalysts were characterized by elemental analysis, H-2-TPR, XRD, NH3-TPD, pyridine-FTIR, SEM, TG-DTG and Raman. It was found that the catalytic activity showed a pronounced dependence on the supports, metal introduction method, promoters and reaction conditions. The nickel species present as charge compensation cations in the zeolite framework constitute the active sites, and the acid sites help to promote the performance of carbonylation. Moreover, two types of coke were observed, and the remarkable reusability of NiY is attributable to the location of the coke outside the zeolite crystals. High catalytic performance was obtained over a NiY(7.0) catalyst with 62 g(acrylic acid)/(g(cat). h) of yield at 235 degrees C,3.6 MPa of initial total pressure and 0.8 mM/l of cupric bromide within 40 min of reaction time. This is the most effective heterogeneous system for synthesizing acrylic acid by carbonylation of acetylene to date. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Concerns about the high-valued utilization of coal- and natural gas-based acetylene has provided particular impetus for exploration of acrylic acid (AA) production via one-step hydrocarboxylation reaction. Motivated by simple recovery, recycling and reuse of the catalyst, we report a high-performance NiO/AlOOH catalyst with AA space-time-yield of 412 g(AA) g(cat.)(-1) h(-1), obtainable by a simple incipient wetness impregnation method. Detailed kinetic and controlled experiments confirmed that nickel species on such a solid catalyst provide a heterogeneous-homogeneous-heterogeneous catalytic cycle where the chelates formed between CO and leached nickel act as the active species. The thorough recovery of leached nickel species improves the catalyst stability greatly. These preliminary findings indicate further prospects for new heterogeneous catalyst design in traditional homogeneous catalytic systems.

Abstract:Nano-NiO and Bi2O3 modified NiO have been successfully prepared by precipitation method and used as catalyst for the carbonylation of acetylene to acrylic acid. The specimens were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, N2 adsorption–desorption, scanning electron microscopy, hydrogen temperature-program reduction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. These results indicated that the introduction of Bi2O3 to the catalyst greatly affected the physical and chemical properties of NiO. The catalytic performance of Bi2O3/NiO depends on the content of Bi2O3, and a composite oxide catalyst with 11.1wt.% of Bi2O3 showed significantly higher activity compared to its components in the pure phase.

Abstract:Solid sediment is a key problem in the industrial-scale production of acrylic acid by hydrocarboxylation of acetylene under high temperature and pressure. The activity and factors for the formation of sediments have been studied. Experiments demonstrate that 80% yield of acrylic acid was achieved, and the sediments were mainly caused by the concentration of Cu2+ under a certain amount of acetylene initial partial pressure. The two kinds of sediments have different particle size distribution and different particle morphology, but both contain carbon nanofibers. SEM-EDXS, Raman spectra, XRD, and elemental analysis indicate three types of coke (i,e, polymeric, filamentous, and graphitic) and three carbon species (i.e., amorphous carbon, carbide, and graphite). It is generally accepted that residence time, reaction temperature, and distribution of catalyst concentration have an impact on sediment formation and side reactions.

Abstract:In this work, SnO x /activated carbon (AC) was synthesized by hydrothermal method, which was applied to acetylene hydrochlorination. Characterizations showed the SnO x nanoparticles were uniformly dispersed on the carbon, with the co-existence of SnO and SnO 2 . The acetylene conversion of SnO x /AC was 75%, much higher than that of SnCl 4 /AC. It was shown that the adsorption of reactants on SnO x was stronger than on SnCl 4 . Theoretical calculations showed the adsorption energies of reactants on SnO x were thermodynamically favorable and suggested that Sn 4+ and Sn 2+ in SnO x have different adsorption capacities for reactants. Through adjusting the valence ratio of SnO x , SnO x /AC O 4 h (O for oxidation) exhibited the best catalytic performance and had the strongest adsorption capacity for the reactants. However, the SnO x /AC catalyst was easily deactivated during acetylene hydrochlorination due to the loss of Sn. The doping of N effectively reduced the loss of Sn and improved the stability of the catalyst due to the anchoring effect of N on the SnO x particles.

Abstract:The detailed mechanism of catalytic conversion of CO2 and ethylene to acrylic acid has been investigated through DFT and DLPNO‐CCSD(T) calculations. Four bidentate ligands, dmpe (1,2‐bis(dimethylphosphino)ethane), dcpe (1,2‐bis(dicyclohexylphosphino)ethane), dtbpe (1,2‐bis(di‐tert‐butylphosphino)ethane), and tmeda (tetramethylethylenediamine) were systematically studied to understand the different catalytic behavior of the Pd‐based catalyst and the well‐known Ni‐based catalyst. The energy barrier of Pd‐/Ni‐catalyzed C−C coupling appears to increase with the larger steric hindrance of the ligand, whereas the barrier of the corresponding β‐H elimination shows an opposite tendency. The barrier for C−C coupling is likely higher than the associated barrier for β‐H elimination in both catalytic systems provided that the coordinated ligand is bulky enough. The palladium catalytic center is more effective than the nickel center for the C−C coupling and β‐H elimination steps in the presence of bulky ligands, whereas the nickel catalyst in turn performs better with small ligands. The palladium catalyst tends to be superior to the nickel catalyst during the following hydrogen transfer to the O atom. In general, the diamine ligand (tmeda) is less efficient than the diphosphine ligands for both systems. In the absence of the auxiliaries, a novel chelating carbene ligand was proposed to be quite efficient for Pd‐catalyzed C−C coupling. Two ligands (dcpm, dtbpm) showed relatively better performance towards the palladium‐catalyzed acrylic acid formation reaction among all the investigated ligands.

Abstract:The purpose of this work is to develop a low-cost and high-performance catalyst for the selective catalytic hydrogenation of acetylene to ethylene. Non-precious metals Cu and Ni were selected as active ingredients for this study. Using ZSM-12 as a carrier, Cu-Ni bimetallic catalysts of CuNix/ZSM-12 (x = 5, 7, 9, 11) with different Ni/Cu ratios were prepared by incipient wetness impregnation method. The total Cu and Ni loading were 2 wt%. Under the optimal reaction conditions, the acetylene conversion was 100%, and the ethylene selectivity was 82.48%. The CuNi7/ZSM-12 prepared in this work exhibits good performance in the semi-hydrogenation of acetylene to ethylene with low cost and has potential for industrial application.

Abstract:The catalytic conversion of carbon dioxide (CO2) and olefins into acrylates has been a long standing target, because society attempts to synthesize commodity chemicals in a more economical and sustainable fashion. In this work, two alkylation reaction pathways were investigated to explore the role of methylene linkage (-CH2-) on the formation of alkyl acrylate from coupling of CO2 and ethylene, catalyzed by a nickel catalyst in the presence of different alkyl iodides. The energy barrier of Ni-O bond cleavage decreases with increasing methylene linkage of alkyl iodides, which may be due to NPA charge transfer of alkyl iodides. Meanwhile, the O1 (ester sp3 O atom) attack route leading to the formation of alkyl acrylate competes with the O2 (carboxylic sp2 O atom) attack route in terms of energy barriers. Further studies on the fluoro-substituted alkyl acrylates show that neither CF3I nor CF3CH2I is effective in releasing trifluoroalkyl acrylates from the nickellacycle, which explains why only negligible amounts of the desired product were detected in the experiment. In addition, we investigated the non-productive pathways leading to byproducts, such as propionic acid, propionates and ion pair complexes, etc. By comparing the results obtained with CH3I, the use of C2H5I as an electrophilic reagent may stabilize the non-productive intermediates. The methylene linkage has little effect on the main productive pathway. However, it has a significant influence on the side reactions, which is detrimental to the formation of alkyl acrylate in competing with the main productive pathway.

Copper-Based Catalysts for Selective Hydrogenation of Acetylene Derived from Cu(OH) 2

Abstract:Replacing precious metals with cheap metals in catalysts is a topic of interest in both industry and academia but challenging. Here, a selective hydrogenation catalyst was prepared by thermal treatment of Cu(OH)2 nanowires with acetylene-containing gas at 120 °C followed by hydrogen reduction at 150 °C. The characterization by means of transmission electron microscopy observation, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy revealed that two crystallites were present in the resultant catalyst. One of the crystal phases was metal Cu, whereas the other crystal phase was ascribed to an interstitial copper carbide (CuxC) phase. The reduction of freshly prepared copper (II) acetylide (CuC2) at 150 °C also afforded the formation of Cu and CuxC crystallites, indicating that CuC2 was the precursor or an intermediate in the formation of CuxC. The prepared catalysts consisting of Cu and CuxC exhibited a considerably high hydrogenation activity at low temperatures in the selective hydrogenation of acetylene in the ethylene stream. In the presence of a large excess of ethylene, acetylene was completely converted at 110 °C and atmospheric pressure with an ethane selectivity of <15%, and the conversion and selectivity were constant in a 260 h run.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Ni/CNTs catalyst, NiB and NiB/CNTs amorphous alloy catalysts were prepared by the impregnation, chemical reduction and impregnation-chemical reduction method with ultrasonic bath, respectively. Heat treatment was carried out to crystaUize NiB/CNTs amorphous alloy catalyst under highly pure nitrogen. These catalysts were characterized, and evaluated in acetylene selective hydrogenation with an atmospheric micro-reactor. Experimental results showed that catalytic activities of NiB/ CNTs amorphous alloy catalyst were superior to these of Ni/CNTs and crystallized NiB/CNTs catalysts. Over the NiB/CNTs amorphous alloy catalyst, acetylene conversion was still higher than 80 percent after 650 minutes of time-on-stream experiment that it was catalytically stable in the acetylene selective hydrogenation. Furthermore, the selectivity of C2H6 decreased gradually in the time-on-stream experiment and fluctuated around 7.5 percent in the long run. The selectivity of C2H4, however, increased gradually in the time-on-stream experiment and fluctuated around 55 percent in the long run.
Effect of N, P co-doped activated carbon supported Cu-based catalyst for acetylene hydration

Abstract:N, P co-doped Cu-based catalyst was synthesized by calcining activated carbon impregnated with diammonium hydrogen phosphate and impregnating active component copper. When the contents of N and P were 0.40% and 2.61% and the reaction temperature was 225 ℃, Cu/20NPAC catalyst had 90.4% acetylene conversion and 88.8% acetaldehyde selectivity, and notably, the catalytic performance remained basically unchanged within 20 h of reaction, which was superior than the Cu-based and Zn-based catalysts reported. The characterization results confirmed the excellent catalytic performance depended on the synergistic effect between N, P doped activated carbon and active component copper. TEM showed that the doped support could effectively improve the dispersion of active component copper and inhibit metal agglomeration. H2-TPR and XPS illustrated reduction of high valence copper were effectively inhibited in catalyst preparation and reaction. In addition, TPD showed an increased adsorption to acetylene. The high activity and stability of the catalyst showed that N, P co-doped support was an effective way to improve the catalytic performance of acetylene hydration.

Abstract:Cu-based catalysts are a promising alternative to toxic mercury catalysts for acetylene hydrochlorination, but their effectiveness is limited due to the poor dispersion and deactivation caused by reduction, agglomeration, and carbon deposition. In this study, the activity and stability of carbon-supported CuCl2 catalysts were largely improved through introducing N-heterocyclic ketones. Remarkably, the N-methyl-2-pyridone (NM2P) coordinated Cu-based catalysts possessed an acetylene conversion over 95% with a better stability under the reaction condition of T = 180 °C, GHSV (C2H2) of 80 h–1, and VHCl/VC2H2 = 1.2. The combined results of characterization and exhaustive density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that the O-Cu coordination between NM2P ligand and Cu cation strengthened the combination of reactants and Cu active sites, lowering the key reaction energy barrier, leading to a high activity. Meanwhile, the addition of NM2P ligand significantly inhibited the reduction of Cu2+ to Cu+/Cu0, avoiding the formation of CuCl aggregates and the coking caused by Cu0, enhancing the catalytic stability. Overall, our study provides important insights into the design and optimization of Cu-based catalysts for acetylene hydrochlorination.

Abstract:DFT calculations have been conducted to elucidate the mechanistic details of a novel Ni-catalyzed hydrocarboxylation reaction of alkynes, in which formic acid is atom-economically used through a catalytic CO recycling manner. On the basis of our theoretical investigations, the bisphosphine (dppbz, 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)benzene) ligated nickel monocarbonyl complex (dppbz)NiCO was located as the active catalytic species for this process, and such a carbonyl ligand is found to be critical for the final reductive elimination. Our studies also revealed the addition of H to alkynes proceeds via a proton transfer process directly from formic acid (i.e., outer-sphere pathway) rather than through a proposed hydrometalation process (i.e., direct hydride shift from Ni-H). The thermal decomposition of formic anhydrides was found to be vital to a successful reaction, and its barrier must be slightly higher than the energetic span of the Ni catalytic cycle. Fast release of CO can poison the Ni catalyst, so that the reaction would be shut down. Other intriguing experimental observations, such as ligand effect, regioselectivity, and extraordinary compatibility of C-X (X = halogen) bonds, are also discussed in this article.
