Abstract:A new weak electron‐deficient building block, bis(2‐ethylhexyl) 2,5‐bis(5‐bromothiophen‐2‐yl) thieno[3,2‐ b ]thiophene‐3,6‐dicarboxylate ( TT‐Th ), is incorporated to construct a wide‐bandgap (1.88 eV) polymer PBDT‐TT for nonfullerene polymer solar cells (NF‐PSCs). PBDT‐TT possesses suitable energy levels and complementary absorption when blended with both ITIC analogues ( ITIC and IT‐M ) and a near‐infrared (NIR) acceptor ( 6TIC ). Moreover, PBDT‐TT exhibits good conjugated planarity and preferable face‐on orientation in the blended thin film, which are beneficial for charge transfer and carrier transport. The PSCs based on PBDT‐TT : IT‐M and PBDT‐TT : 6TIC blend films yield high power conversion efficiencies of 11.38% and 11.03%, respectively. To the best of the authors' knowledge, the PCE of 11.03% for PBDT‐TT : 6TIC‐ based device is one of the highest values reported for NIR NF‐PSCs. This work demonstrates that TT‐Th is a useful new electron‐accepting building block for making p‐type wide bandgap polymers for efficient NIR NF‐PSCs.
Photovoltaic Devices Based on a Novel Poly(phenylene Ethynylene) Derivative

Abstract:A novel poly(phenylene ethynylene) derivative containing benzothiadiazole (BT) co-monomer (PPE-BT) was synthesized, characterized and used for photovoltaic devices. Photovoltaic devices of ITO/PEDOT-PSS/pristine PPE-BT/Ba/Al and ITO/PEDOT-PSS/PPE-BT+PCBM (1/4w/w)/Ba/Al were fabricated and their photovoltaic performances were measured and discussed. The energy conversion efficiency and incident photo-current conversion efficiency of photovoltaic device based on PPE-BT+PCBM reached 0.022% (78.2mW/cm2, AM1.5) and 1% (391nm), respectively. Its photosensitivity reached 3.1mA/W, which is almost one order of magnitude higher compared to that of the pure PPE-BT. The electroluminescence of pristine PPE-BT was almost completely quenched when it was blended with PCBM.

Abstract:A novel low band gap polymer, poly[(2′,5′-di(α-thienyl)-3′,4′-dinitrothiophene-5,5′′-diyl)-benzylidene-block-(2′,5′-di(α-thienyl)-3′,4′-dinitrothiophenequinodimethane-5,5′′-diyl)](PDTNTBQ), was synthesized by the two-step synthetic routes. The polymer incorporates strong electron-donating and electron-accepting moieties into the conjugated poly(heteroarylene methines) backbone. The polymer was readily soluble in common organic solvents, such as chloroform and THF. The optical and electrochemical measurements showed a low band gap of ~1.10eV.
Naphthalenothiophene imide-based polymer exhibiting over 17% efficiency

Abstract:Developing novel electron-deficient monomers is crucially important for the future development of non-fullerene organic solar cells. Here, we report a new electron-deficient monomer naphthalenothiophene imide (NTI) and NTI-based copolymers PNTB and PNTB-2T. The strong electron-withdrawing ability of NTI could effectively lower the HOMO level of the polymer that facilitates the tuning of the polymer's physical properties while simultaneously maintaining the low-lying HOMO value. Polymer chains modification by introducing extra thiophenes results in the closed π−π stacking and ordered polymer chain packing of PNTB-2T and is proven to be an effective strategy to increase the device performance. Thus, solar cell devices for PNTB-2T:Y6 exhibit an efficiency of 16.72%, which is further enhanced to 17.35% by the third component PC71BM, whereas that for PNTB:Y6 is only 3.81%. Importantly, PNTB-2T-based devices exhibit excellent batch-to-batch reproducibility. These features make this family of polymer donors very promising and the design strategies will enlighten future development of high-performance polymer donors for organic solar cells (OSC).

Abstract:As one kind of abundant product from renewable resources, furan and its fused‐ring derivatives, have provoked great interest in the context of developing efficient photovoltaic materials. However, the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of furan‐based photovoltaic materials has lagged behind its thiophene counterparts. In this work, in consideration of the ordered π–π stacking via extending conjugation to further improve the charge mobility, a novel furan fused‐ring derivative of naphtho[2,3‐b:6,7‐b′]difuran (NDF) based copolymer of NDF‐3T is designed and synthesized. Because of its favorable linear molecular conformation, the NDF‐3T possesses a high crystallinity, as well as ordered and dense π–π stacking. Subsequently, the NDF‐3T‐based device exhibits an efficient PCE of 14.21%, which is higher than that of the analogue naphthodithiophene (NDT) counterpart (10.86%). To the best of the authors' knowledge, the PCE is also the best record in furan‐based photovoltaic materials. More importantly, the development of line NDF shows great potential in construing highly efficient photovoltaic materials and can be referenced to other furan fused‐ring structures.

A Wide-Bandgap Conjugated Polymer Based on Quinoxalino[6,5-f ]quinoxaline for Fullerene and Non-Fullerene Polymer Solar Cells

Abstract:A wide-bandgap conjugated polymer, PNQx-2F2T, based on a ring-fused unit of quinoxalino[6,5-f ]quinoxaline (NQx), is synthesized for use as electron donor in polymer solar cells (PSCs). The polymer shows intense light absorption in the range from 300 to 740 nm and favorable energy levels of frontier molecular orbitals. The polymer has afforded decent device performance when blended with either fullerene-based acceptor [6,6]-phenyl-C71 -butylric acid methyl ester ([70]PCBM) or non-fullerene acceptor 3,9-bis(2-methylene-(3-(1,1-dicyanomethylene)-indanone-methyl))-5,5,11,11-tetrakis(4-n-hexylphenyl)-dithieno[2,3-d: 2',3'-d']-s-indaceno[1,2-b:5,6-b']dithiophene (IT-M). The highest PCEs of 7.9% and 7.5% have been achieved for [70]PCBM or IT-M based PSCs, respectively. Moreover, the influence of molecular weight of PNQx-2F2T on solar cell performance has been investigated. It is found that fullerene-based devices prefer higher polymer molecular weight, while non-fullerene devices are not susceptible to the molecular weight of PNQx-2F2T. The device results are extensively explained by electrical and morphological characterizations. This work not only evidences the potential of NQx for constructing high-performance photovoltaic polymers but also demonstrates a useful structure-performance relationship for efficiency enhancement of non-fullerene PSCs via the development of new conjugated polymers.

Abstract:Among various photovoltaic building blocks, fused aromatic units such as benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b']dithiophene (BDT) based conjugated polymers have exhibited excellent photovoltaic properties in organic solar cells (OSCs) due to their better delocalization along polymeric backbones. However, further extending conjugation in fused aromatic units appears some unavailable drawbacks such low-solubility, low-antioxidation ability, high-lying HOMO level, etc., which cause negative effect on the corresponding open-circuit voltage (V oc) and power conversion efficiency (PCE). Here, we designed and synthesized two novel wide band gap polymers, PBDT-3T and PNDT-3T, using benzodithiophene and naphthyldithiophene as donor units and ester-substituted triple thiophenes as acceptor units. Comparing to the referenced BDT based polymer, it was found that NDT unit not only extends the conjugated degree of the main chain and increase polymeric crystallinity and carrier mobility, but also increases the V oc of NDT based photovoltaic device. The final short-circuit current and fill factor are 15.90 mA cm−2 and 63.7%, and finally the PCE reached 9.72%, which exhibited better advantages than the BDT unit polymers. Therefore, the adoption of NDT as photovoltaic building block is proved to be an effective strategy in synergistic improvement in V oc and PCE and could be referenced to other photovoltaic materials.

Abstract:An angular-shaped naphthalene tetracarboxylic diimide (NDI) was designed and synthesized as a new building block for n-type conjugated polymers to tune their energy levels. Three n-type copolymers incorporating this angular-shaped NDI as the acceptor moiety were obtained by Stille coupling reactions and had number average molecular weights of 18.773.0 kDa. All-polymer bulk-heterojunction solar cells made from blends of these polymers with poly(3-hexylthiophene) gave a power conversion efficiency up to 0.32% and exhibited an open-circuit voltage (Voc) up to 0.94 V due to their relative high-lying lowest unoccupied molecular orbital energy levels. The high Voc of 0.94 V is higher than that of solar cells based on linear-shaped NDI-containing polymers (<0.6 V). The results indicate that the angular-shaped NDI is a promising building block for constructing nonfullerene polymer acceptors for solar cells with high open-circuit voltages. Abstract:Two-dimensional conjugated zigzag naphthodithiophene was used for construction of novel polymer photovoltaic materials. Two novel copolymers based on zigzag naphthodithiophene and alkylthieno[3,4-c]pyrrole-4,6-dione inserted with different alkyl substituted thiophene as bridges have been designed and synthesized (PzNDTT-TPD1 and PzNDTT-TPD2, respectively). The best power conversion efficiency of a PzNDTT-TPD1-based device reaches 7.50% at an active layer thickness of 203 nm and the device performances of PzNDTT-TPD1-based polymer solar cells are all above 6.4% with active layer thickness variations from 141 to 244 nm, suggesting that it is very suitable for the fabrication of high performance, large area solution-processed polymer solar cells.

Abstract:A new conjugated polymer based on 5,7-bis(2-ethylhexyl)benzo[1,2-c:4,5-c′]dithiophene-4,8-dione, named as PBDTBDD, was designed, synthesized, and applied in polymer solar cells (PSCs). A power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 6.67% was obtained from the PBDTBDD/PC61BM-based PSC, which is a remarkable result for the PSCs using PC61BM as electron acceptor. The PBDTBDD/PC61BM-based device exhibits a narrow absorption band and excellent quantum efficiency in the range from 500 to 700 nm. Furthermore, PBDTBDD shows a strong aggregation effect in solution state, and the study indicates that although the temperature used in solution preparation has little influence on molecular orientation as well as crystallinity of the D/A blend, it plays an important role in forming proper domain size in the blend. This work provides a good example to reveal the correlation between the morphology of the blend films and the processing temperature of the solution preparation. Furthermore, the study in this work suggests an interesting and feasible approach to modulate domain size without changing crystallinity of the blend films in PSCs.

Difluorobenzoxadiazole-based Conjugated Polymers for Efficient Non-Fullerene Polymer Solar Cells with Low Voltage Loss

Abstract:Two donor-acceptor (D-A) conjugated copolymers based on difluombenzoxadiazole (ffBX) and oligothiophenes, i.e., PffBX-2T and PffBX-TT, were designed and synthesized for polymer solar cells (PSCs). Compared to the polymers based on difluorobenzothiadiazole (ffBT) units, the two ffBX-based polymers presented identical optical bandgaps (similar to 1.62 eV), but lower highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) energy levels. Owing to the down-shifted HOMO levels, the PSCs based on PffBX-2T and PffBX-TT showed lower voltage loss, and the opencircuit voltage (V-oc was similar to 0.1 V higher than that of the devices with the ffBT-based polymer. As a result, higher photovoltaic performance was achieved for the devices based on the ffBX-based polymers. The power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of the non-fullerene PSCs with PffBX-2T and PffBX-TT as the donor were 8.72% and 10.12%, respectively. The superior device performance of PffBX-IT resulted from the efficient exciton dissociation and charge transport as well as weak charge recombination, which could be ascribed to the favorable face-on packing of the conjugated backbones and the desired morphology in the blend film. Our study demonstrates that difluombenzoxadiazole is a promising building block for constructing conjugated polymers for high-performance non-fullerene PSCs.

Abstract:A series of conjugated polymers were designed and synthesized via the alternating copolymerization of the electron-donating monomer 2,7-carbazole and electron-accepting monomers of naphthalene diimide (NDI), dithienyl-naphthalene diimide (DTNDI), perylene diimide (PDI) and dithienyl-perylene diimide (DTPDI), respectively. The obtained four copolymers showed good thermal stability as well as broad absorptions in visible region and narrow optical band gaps (1.86–1.59eV). Through cyclic voltammetry (CV) measuremnts, it was found that all copolymers were n-type semiconductive materials. The copolymers' photovoltaic properties were evaluated when the blends of poly(3-hexyl thiophene) (P3HT) and copolymers were used as the active layers of polymer solar cells (PSCs): among four copolymers, the copolymer alternating 2,7-carbazole and DTPDI units (PCDTPDI) exhibited the best photovoltaic performance with an open-circuit voltage (Voc) of 0.48V, a short circuit current density (Jsc) of 3.40mA/cm2, fill factor (FF) of 0.42, and a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 0.68%.
Non‐Fullerene Organic Solar Cells Based on Benzo[1,2‐b:4,5‐b′]difuran‐Conjugated Polymer with 14% Efficiency

Abstract:The development of high‐performance donor polymers is important for obtaining high power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of non‐fullerene polymer solar cells (PSCs). Currently, most high‐efficiency PSCs are fabricated with benzo[1,2‐b:4,5‐b′]dithiophene (BDT)‐based conjugated polymers. The photovoltaic performance of benzo[1,2‐b:4,5‐b′]difuran (BDF)‐based copolymers has lagged far behind that of BDT‐based counterparts. In this study, a novel BDF‐based copolymer L2 is designed and synthesized, in which BDF and benzotriazole (BTz) building blocks have been used as the electron‐sufficient and deficient units, respectively. When blending with a non‐fullerene small molecule acceptor (SMA), TTPT‐T‐4F, the L2‐based device exhibits a remarkably high PCE of 14.0%, which is higher than that of the device fabricated by its analogue BDT copolymer (12.72%). Moreover, PSCs based on the L2:TTPT‐T‐4F blend demonstrate excellent ambient stability with 92% of its original PCE remaining after storage in air for 1800 h. Thus, BDF is a promising electron‐donating unit, and the BDF‐based copolymers can be competitive or even surpass the performance of BDT‐based counterparts.

Naphthobisthiadiazole-Based π-Conjugated Polymers for Nonfullerene Solar Cells: Suppressing Intermolecular Interaction Improves Photovoltaic Performance

Abstract:Naphthobisthiadiazole has been known as a promising building unit of π-conjugated polymers for organic photovoltaics (OPVs). Here, we synthesized new NTz-based polymers that were combined with a benzodithiophene (BDT) unit having alkylthienyl substituents in the polymer backbone, named PNTzBDT, and PNTzBDT-F and PNTzBDT-Cl with fluorine and chlorine groups in the substituents, respectively. The polymers had significantly improved solubility than the previously reported NTz-based polymer (PNTz4T), most likely due to the torsion of the alkylthienyl substituents with respect to the BDT moiety, which suppresses the intermolecular interaction between the backbones. Despite the lower intermolecular interaction and thereby lower crystallinity, these polymers, in particular PNTzBDT and PNTzBDT-F, exhibited higher photovoltaic performances, with power conversion efficiencies as high as 13.3%, than PNTz4T in the cells that used Y6 as the acceptor material. The improved performance was ascribed to the enhanced miscibility of the polymers with the nonfullerene acceptor due to the increased solubility, which in addition led to the better charge generation and reduced charge recombination. Abstract:Efficient low-band-gap polymers are one key component for constructing tandem solar cells with other higher-band-gap materials to harvest wide absorption of the solar spectrum. The N-acyldithieno[3,2-b:2',3'-d]pyrrole (DTP) building block is used for making low-band-gap polymers. It is attractive because of its strong donating ability and relatively low highest-occupied-molecular-orbital level in comparison with the N-alkyl DTP building block. However, additional solubilizing groups on the accepting units are needed for soluble donor-acceptor polymers based on the N-alkanoyl DTP building block. Combining N-benzoyl DTP with a 4,7-dithieno-2,1,3-benzothiadiazole building block, a polymer with a low band gap of 1.44 eV, delivers a high short-circuit current of 17.1 mA/cm(2) and a power conversion efficiency of 3.95%, which are the highest for the devices with DTP-containing materials. Herein, an alcohol-soluble diamine-modified fullerene cathode interfacial layer improved the device efficiency significantly more than the mono-amine analogue.
Theoretical investigations on donor-acceptor conjugated copolymers based on naphtho[1,2-c:5,6-c]bis[1,2,5]thiadiazole for organic solar cell applications

Abstract:Conjugated polymers with donor-acceptor architectures have been successfully applied in bulk heterojunction solar cell devices. Tuning the electron-withdrawing capability in donor-acceptor (D-A) conjugated polymers allows for design of new polymers with enhanced electrical and optical properties. In this paper, a series of D-A copolymers, PBDFDTBT (P1a), PBDTDTBT (P2a), PNDTDTBT (P3a), and PQDTDTBT (P4a), were selected and theoretically investigated using PBE0/6-311G** and TD-PBE0/6-311G**//PBE0/6-311G** methods. The calculated results agree well with the available experimental data of HOMO energy levels and band gaps. We further designed and studied four novel copolymers, P1b, P2b, P3b, and P4b, by substituting the 2,1,3-benzothiadiazole (BT) unit in P1a-P4a with a stronger unit of naphtho[1,2-c:5,6-c]bis[1,2,5]thiadiazole (NT), respectively. Compared with P1a-P4a, the newly designed polymers of P1b-P4b show better performance with the smaller band gaps and lower HOMO energy levels. The PCEs of similar to 5%, similar to 7%, similar to 7% and similar to 7% for P1b-P4b, predicted by Scharber diagrams, are much higher than those of P1a-P4a when used in combination with PCBM. These results clearly reveal that tuning the electron-withdrawing capability in D-A conjugated polymers is an effective way to improve the electrical and optical properties and the efficiency of the photovoltaic device.
Difluoroterthiophene as promising block to build highly planar conjugated polymer for polymer photovoltaic cells

Abstract:Developing highly planar semiconducting polymer is essential for achieving high mobility and improving the photovoltaic performance of bulk-heterojunction polymer solar cells. In this contribution, two novel low-bandgap donor-acceptor copolymers, P1-3T and P2-3T2F, consisting of electron-accepting benzothiadiazole acceptor segment and electron-donating terthiophene donor segment with and without fluorine atoms were designed and synthesized. The density functional theory calculations and ultraviolet-visible absorption studies demonstrate that the fluorinated P2-3T2F polymer has more planar backbone conformation, deeper HOMO level, broader absorption spectrum with a vibronic shoulder peak, and higher absorption coefficient compared with the non-fluorinated analogue polymer, P1-3T. Furthermore, P2-3T2F exhibits good crystallinity and high hole mobility, presumably due to the well-ordered lamellar packing and the π-π stacking interaction between the backbones of the conjugated polymers. The optimized polymer solar cell based on P2-3T2F:PC61BM exhibits a short-circuit current density (Jsc) of 12.77 mA cm-2, a fill factor (FF) of 68.99%, an open-circuit voltage (Voc) of 0.80 V, and a maximum power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 7.14%, which is approximately 46% higher than that of the P1-3T:PC61BM device. The enhanced PCE is primarily due to increased light-harvesting ability and interconnected morphology with finely dispersed polymer-rich and PC61BM-rich domains, which improves the efficiency of exciton dissociation and rises the mobility of charge carriers, thus boosting the short-circuit current density and the FF value. Moreover, the relatively deep HOMO of P2-3T2F effectively increases the Voc.

Abstract:Diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) is attractive for building conjugated polymers for polymer solar cell (PSC) and organic field effect transistor (OFET). Yet the usual access to DPP conjugated polymers is via donor-acceptor (D-A) two-component polymerization. However, the number of excellent polymers based on the D-A combination is still limited, which promotes researchers to explore new strategy for preparation of novel conjugated polymers and to understand their structure-property relationship. In this work, a DPP-based polymer P1 was first obtained with co-polymerization of DPP (A) and alkoxyl benzene (D). Further, two novel polymers (P2 and P3) were developed via introducing a third electron-deficient monomer X (difluoro-benzothiadiazole or naphthalene diimide) in the polymerization process. P1 - P3 polymers (molecular weight: 3.83 x 10(4), 5.30 x 10(4) and 6.56 x 10(4)) showed good solubility in common organic solvents. Due to the hybridization of the molecular orbitals between their three components (D, A and X), P2 and P3 showed narrower bandgaps (1.26 and 1.27 eV) than P1, and their absorption thus red-shifted up to 1000 nm in comparison to that of D-A polymer P1 (bandgap of 1.50 eV). The introduction of electron-deficient monomers also deepened the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) levels of P2 and P3 to -5.28 and -5.33 eV, which was beneficial to a larger open circuit voltage (V-OC) in PSCs. Moreover, the introduction of the third monomer X altered the film properties of the polymers. It showed that P1 with preference of face-on orientation exhibited a good power conversion efficiency (PCE) in PSCs, while P2 demonstrated an improved hole mobility in OFET due to the preferable edge-on orientation. When blended with [6,6]-phenyl-C-71-butyric acid methyl ester (PC71BM), P1 showed a PCE of 2.56%, with a V-OC of 0.68 V, a short circuit current density (J(SC)) of 5.71 mA cm(-2) and a fill factor (FF) of 0.66, while P2 gave a lower PCE of 1.79%, with a V-OC of 0.71 V, a J(SC) of 3.91 mA cm(-2) and a FF of 0.65. This work provides references for the design of novel conjugated polymers for PSCs and OFETs.
