Abstract:Graphene quantum dots (GQDs) have various alluring properties and potential applications, but their large-scale applications are limited by current synthetic methods that commonly produce GQDs in small amounts. Moreover, GQDs usually exhibit polycrystalline or highly defective structures and thus poor optical properties. Here we report the gram-scale synthesis of single-crystalline GQDs by a facile molecular fusion route under mild and green hydrothermal conditions. The synthesis involves the nitration of pyrene followed by hydrothermal treatment in alkaline aqueous solutions, where alkaline species play a crucial role in tuning their size, functionalization and optical properties. The single-crystalline GQDs are bestowed with excellent optical properties such as bright excitonic fluorescence, strong excitonic absorption bands extending to the visible region, large molar extinction coefficients and long-term photostability. These high-quality GQDs can find a large array of novel applications in bioimaging, biosensing, light emitting diodes, solar cells, hydrogen production, fuel cells and supercapacitors.

Abstract:Highly bright-fluorescent N (nitrogen), S (sulfur) co-doped graphene quantum dots (GQDs) were synthesized through an modified hydrothermal method. The doped GQDs are smaller than 10 nm in size in average and stable in aqueous solution. Unlike many reports on graphene oxide (GO), the as-synthesized doped GQDs exhibit bright blue photoluminescence (PL) emission and the emission wavelength is excitation-independent. The intriguling results indicate that GQDs may have great potential in the optic and optoelectronic applications.

Abstract:We report an improved Hummers method for synthesizing graphene quantum dots (GQDs) by directly oxidizing and etching graphite powders. The yield of GQDs is as high as 63 +/- 7% (by weight, wt%), suggesting this technique is suitable for producing GQDs on a large scale. The GQDs are nanocrystals with lateral dimensions in the range of 2-4 nm and an average thickness of around 1.3 nm. The emission peaks of as-prepared GQDs can be tuned in the range of 440 to 510 nm by varying the reaction conditions. Their fluorescence quantum yields were tested to be around 1%, which could be further increased to about 3% by hydrothermal treatment. These GQDs have low cytotoxicity and excellent biocompatibility, indicating that they are promising for biological applications.

Abstract:Graphene quantum dots (GQDs) with quantum confinement and size effect are proposed to be applicable in photovoltaic, nanodevices, and so on, due to extraordinary electronic and optical properties. Here we report a facile approach to synthesize gram-scale GQDs from active carbon atoms, which are obtained via the deflagration reaction of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and Si, growing from high- to low-temperature zones when traveling through the deflagration flame in a short time with releasing gas as the carrier medium. The prepared GQDs were aggregated into carbon nanospheres; thus, Hummer's method was utilized to exfoliate the GQD aggregations into individual GQDs. We show that the length of GQDs is similar to 10 nm and the exfoliated GQDs solution presents an obvious fluorescence effect with a strong emission peak at 570 at 460 nm excitation. And these GQDs are demonstrated to be excellent probes for cellular imaging. Furthermore, we propose a growth mechanism based on computer simulation, which is well verified by experimental reproduction. Our study opens up a promising route for high-yield and high-quality GQDs, as well as other various quantum dots.

Abstract:Herein, we originally propose a simple and facile one-step electrochemical exfoliation approach to synthesize in large scale graphene quantum dots (GQDs) from low-cost energy resource of coke. We found that the GQDs emerged multi-color fluorescence by adjusting the water content of electrolyte solution and applying current density, which effectually caused green-GQDs (G-GQDs), yellow-GQDs (YGQDs), and orange-GQDs (O-GQDs) of regular micro-variation in size from 3.02 to 4.61 nm with the fluorescence emissions at 500, 530 and 560 nm, respectively. Furthermore, blue-GQDs (B-GQDs) with emission at 440 nm can be obtained by reducing G-GQDs with NaBH4 at room temperature for 4 h. The quantum yields of B-, G-, Y- and O-GQDs are obtained up to 19.27%, 8.47%, 7.90% and 9.24%, respectively. The B-, G-, Y- and O-GQDs with high yields severally corresponding to 13.04 wt%, 17.88 wt%, 42.86 wt% and 31.13 wt%, possess scalable and industrial production prospect. All four types of GQDs were fully characterized and the electrochemical production mechanism of these GQDs has been also investigated in full. Additionally, GQDs were also available to fabricate their solid-state GQDs/epoxy composites for potential applications in multicolor light-emitting diode devices. (C) 2018 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:Graphene quantum dots (GQDs), which are edge-bound nanometer-size graphene pieces, have fascinating optical and electronic properties. These have been synthesized either by nanolithography or from starting materials such as graphene oxide (GO) by the chemical breakdown of their extended planar structure, both of which are multistep tedious processes. Here, we report that during the acid treatment and chemical exfoliation of traditional pitch-based carbon fibers, that are both cheap and commercially available, the stacked graphitic submicrometer domains of the fibers are easily broken down, leading to the creation of GQDs with different size distribution in scalable amounts. The as-produced GQDs, in the size range of 1–4 nm, show two-dimensional morphology, most of which present zigzag edge structure, and are 1–3 atomic layers thick. Abstract:Here we introduce a simple, superfast, and scalable strategy that obtains graphene quantum dots (GQDs) within 3 min under microwave irradiation (MA-GQDs). The MA-GQDs exhibit excellent fluorescence quantum yields up to 35% in the optimum reaction condition. The MA-GQDs with single-crystalline and few-layer structure can reach the visible region with the longest absorption wavelength at 700 nm. Moreover, these ultrabright-fluorescence and stable MAGQDs as a phosphor and fluorescence probe could be efficiently applied in white light-emitting diodes and cell imaging fields. The developed pathway to GQDs can provide unambiguous and remarkable insights into the design of high-fluorescence and few-defect GQDs, and expedite the applications of GQDs.

Abstract:Because of the fabulous fluorescence characteristics, semiconductor quantum dots have attracted a lot attention since the first reported. Meanwhile, the applications of quantum dots have been limited by its own toxicity. The appearance of graphene quantum dots (GQDs) breaks the awkward situation. GQDs can also realize from ultraviolet to near infrared full visible light broad band emitting. The lower cost, better biocompatibility and stability than semiconductor quantum dots make it possible to replace inorganic quantum dots for chemical sensing, biomarkers, and optoelectronic devices. In this paper, the synthesis of doped GQDs is mainly studied. The nitrogen-chlorine doped GQDs were synthesized by hydrothermal method. The as prepared GQDs were characterized by TEM, XPS, FTIR, PL and other characterization methods. In this study, by utilizing common industrialized technology to fabricate GQDs white LED could achieve large-scale production. The rendering index of as prepared white GQDs LED was 85.4. It is much higher than YAG phosphor white LED. And the chromaticity coordinates of GQDs LED located at (0.34, 0.36). The correlated color temperature of 5075K was very consistent with indoor lighting scene. That means this GQDs white LED has great application prospects in the field of high-end lighting.

Abstract:We report a facile hydrothermal synthesis of intrinsic fluorescent graphene quantum dots (GQDs) with two-dimensional morphology. This synthesis uses glucose, concentrate sulfuric acid, and deionized water as reagents. Concentrated sulfuric acid is found to play a key role in controlling the transformation of as-prepared hydrothermal products from amorphous carbon nanodots to well-crystallized GQDs. These GQDs show typical absorption characteristic for graphene, and have nearly excitation-independent ultraviolet and blue intrinsic emissions. Temperature-dependent PL measurements have demonstrated strong electron-electron scattering and electron-phonon interactions, suggesting a similar temperature behavior of GQDs to inorganic semiconductor quantum dots. According to optical studies, the ultraviolet emission is found to originate from the recombination of electron-hole pairs localized in the C-C bonds, while the blue emission is from the electron transition of sp(2) domains. Abstract:We report a novel procedure involving polyethylenimine-assisted hydrothermal cutting and subsequent ultrafiltration for fabricating nearly monodisperse graphene quantum dots with a uniform lateral size and confined layer number. The isolated monolayer quantum dots exhibit a sharp band-edge absorption feature and strong photoluminescence (quantum yield of 21%) independent of excitation wavelength and pH. Their preliminary application in bioimaging has been demonstrated.

Abstract:We developed a rapid, simple and pollution-free method to synthesize highly ordered graphene quantum dots (GQDs), which adopts cheap and readily available activated carbon and environmentally friendly hydrogen peroxide as raw materials through simple microwave and hydrothermal treatment, and the fine products are obtained as uniformly sized particles. The proposed strategy enables the difficult transformation from amorphous carbon to highly ordered GQDs for the first time while completely avoiding the use of concentrated sulphuric acid, concentrated nitric acid and other caustic reagents, and the purification procedure is relatively simple. Furthermore, the as-prepared products possess low toxicity, high biological compatibility and good fluorescence properties, which are excellent properties for bio-labelling applications.

Abstract:A facile chemical oxidation and exfoliation method has been developed to prepare luminescent graphene quantum dots (GQDs) using commercial carbon fibers as the raw material, which were synthesized from pitch through an annealing process at 1500°C. The as-prepared GQDs, in the thickness range of 1–2 graphene layers, exhibit an excitation-independent photoluminescence (PL) behavior similar to that of semiconductor quantum dots, and can be dissolved in water and common polar solvents. This approach has enabled a simple and effective way for production of the GQDs solution, which could be separated into blue and green photoluminescence (PL) GQDs with different dialysis bags.

Abstract:Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) have been used to prepare single-layered graphene quantum dots (GQDs) through a simple and green hydrothermal etching method. After the characterization of products and intermediates with scanning electronic microscopy, Raman and FTIR, a possible mechanism has been proposed for the formation of GQDs. The treatment of SWCNTs has resulted in two kinds of GQDs (i.e. GQD1 and GQD2), both of which are monodisperse and single-layered nanosheets with an average lateral dimension of 8nm and an average height of 0.5nm. Excited with 365nm UV light, aqueous solutions of GQDs1 and GQDs2 give green and yellow luminescence, respectively. The differences in optical property between GQDs1 and GQDs2 mainly results from their differences in degree of oxidation.

Abstract:Graphene quantum dots (GQDs) have been synthesized via one-pot hydrothermal approach using glucose as precursors. The obtained products have a size around 3.5 nm, which can be controlled by changing the reaction temperature. With the increase of preparation temperatures, the glucose molecules are dehydrated under hydrothermal conditions and then converted to GQDs. The high temperature helps to increase the graphitization degree of GQDs. The GQDs show the blue color emission under excitation of 300-450 nm, which can be used in electrochemical luminescence devices.

Abstract:The development of graphene quantum dots (GQDs) with low toxicity, excellent dispersibility, and high photostability has led to extensive progress in bio-imaging and optical sensing applications. However, one-pot synthesis and mass production of GQDs, and tuning their photoluminescence, remains a challenge. Here we demonstrate a simple and scalable method for fabricating GQDs with high size uniformity and chemical stability, via a sequential process of inserting alkali metal into graphite (Stage I: KC8 and Stage II: KC24) and exfoliation to GQDs in a selected solvent. Structural and optical measurements were conducted, and the emitted colors of the as-prepared GQDs were blue (KC8) and yellow (KC24), respectively. The stage of graphite intercalation in the compounds played an important role in the size and thickness of the GQD. The as-prepared GQDs had clear characteristic peaks consistent with the quantum confinement effect and intrinsic/extrinsic states. Our approach will provide great potential for a wide variety of bioimaging and bioanalysis applications.

Abstract:The development of large-scale synthetic methods for high quality carbon quantum dots（CQDs） is fundamental to their applications.However,the macroscopic preparation and scale up synthetic of CQDs is still in its infancy.Here,we report a facile,green,kilogram-scale synthesis of high quality fluorescent CQDs derived from poplar leaves via a one-step hydrothermal method.Notably,the throughput of CQDs can reach a level up to as high as 1.4975 kg in one pot.The structure and properties of the as-prepared CQDs were assessed through TEM,XRD,XPS and various spectroscopic methods.The obtained high quality CQD s with a photoluminescent quantum yield of 10.64% showed remarkable stability in aqueous media,rich functional groups,high photostability,consistent photoluminescence within biological pH range and low cytotoxicity.On account of these good properties,we demonstrated the multifunctional application to electrocatalytic water splitting,Fe 3+ sensing and bioimaging.It showed remarkable electrocatalytic activity,Fe 3+ sensitivity and good biocompatibility.This study provides a green,facile,inexpensive and large-scale method for producing high quality CQDs,which provides application value for large-scale production of CQDs.
