Abstract:Highly bright-fluorescent N (nitrogen), S (sulfur) co-doped graphene quantum dots (GQDs) were synthesized through an modified hydrothermal method. The doped GQDs are smaller than 10 nm in size in average and stable in aqueous solution. Unlike many reports on graphene oxide (GO), the as-synthesized doped GQDs exhibit bright blue photoluminescence (PL) emission and the emission wavelength is excitation-independent. The intriguling results indicate that GQDs may have great potential in the optic and optoelectronic applications.

Abstract:Tunable photoluminescent nitrogen-doped graphene and graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) quantum dots are synthesized via a facile solid-phase microwave-assisted (SPMA) technique utilizing the pyrolysis of citric acid and urea precursors. The atomic ratio, surface functionalization, and atomic structure of as-prepared quantum dots strongly depend on the ratio of citric acid to urea. The quantum dots have a homogeneous particle size and tend to form a circle and/or ellipse shape to minimize the edge free energy. The atomic ratio of surface nitrogen to carbon (N/C) in the quantum dots can reach as high as 1.74, among the highest values reported in the literature. The SPMA technique is capable of producing high-quality quantum dots with photoluminescence (PL) emission at various wavelengths on a pilot scale. The atomic structures of the N-doped graphene and g-C3N4 quantum dots are explored using molecular dynamics simulations. Increasing the urea concentration increases the tendency of in-plane N (i.e., quaternary N) substitution over that of other amino functionalizations, such as pyrrolic and pyridinic N. The PL emission can be precisely tuned via a one-step SPMA method by adjusting the precursor composition. A high quantum yield of 38.7% is achieved with N-doped graphene quantum dots, indicating the substantial influence of the N- and O-rich edge groups on the enhancement of PL efficiency. A bandgap structure is proposed to describe the interstate (π*–π) transition of quantum dots. This work introduces a novel approach for engineering the chemical composition and atomic structure of graphene and g-C3N4 quantum dots, facilitating their research and applications in optical, electronic, and biomedical devices.

Abstract:Graphene quantum dots (GQDs) have various alluring properties and potential applications, but their large-scale applications are limited by current synthetic methods that commonly produce GQDs in small amounts. Moreover, GQDs usually exhibit polycrystalline or highly defective structures and thus poor optical properties. Here we report the gram-scale synthesis of single-crystalline GQDs by a facile molecular fusion route under mild and green hydrothermal conditions. The synthesis involves the nitration of pyrene followed by hydrothermal treatment in alkaline aqueous solutions, where alkaline species play a crucial role in tuning their size, functionalization and optical properties. The single-crystalline GQDs are bestowed with excellent optical properties such as bright excitonic fluorescence, strong excitonic absorption bands extending to the visible region, large molar extinction coefficients and long-term photostability. These high-quality GQDs can find a large array of novel applications in bioimaging, biosensing, light emitting diodes, solar cells, hydrogen production, fuel cells and supercapacitors.
Revealing the Underlying Absorption and Emission Mechanism of Nitrogen Doped Graphene Quantum Dots.

Abstract:Nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dots (N-GQDs) hold promising application in electronics and optoelectronics because of their excellent photo-stability, tunable photoluminescence and high quantum yield. However, the absorption and emission mechanisms have been debated for years. Here, by employing time-dependent density functional theory, we demonstrate that the different N-doping types and positions give rise to different absorption and emission behaviors, which successfully addresses the inconsistency observed in different experiments. Specifically, center doping creates mid-states, rendering non-fluorescence, while edge N-doping modulates the energy levels of excited states and increases the radiation transition probability, thus enhancing fluorescence strength. More importantly, the even hybridization of frontier orbitals between edge N atoms and GQDs leads to a blue-shift of both absorption and emission spectra, while the uneven hybridization of frontier orbitals induces a red-shift. Solvent effects on N-GQDs are further explored by the conductor-like screening model and it is found that strong polarity of the solvent can cause a red-shift and enhance the intensity of both absorption and emission spectra.

Abstract:1–3 nm nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dots with quantum yield of 0.74 are synthesized via cutting graphene oxide and in situ doping. The size is determined by the remaining graphitic domains of precursor. Abstract:A hydrothermal approach was developed for the synthesis of N-doped graphene quantum dots (N-GQDs) by cutting N-doped graphene. The N-GQDs obtained have a N/C atomic ratio of ca. 5.6% and diameter of 1–7 nm. The photoluminescence (PL) properties of the N-GQDs were investigated. It was found that the N-GQDs possess bright blue PL and excellent upconversion PL properties.

Abstract:This paper reports a facile fabrication of N-doped graphene quantum dots (N-GQDs) showing controllable chemical properties through a hydrothermal treatment. The N-GQDs have a uniform size of 3.06 +/- 0.78 nm and prefer the equilibrium shapes of circle and ellipse due to the minimization of edge free energy. The N/C atomic ratio in N-GQDs can be precisely tailored in a range from 8.3 at% to 15.8 at% by simply controlling the concentration of N source (ammonium hydroxide). One order of magnitude quantum yield of 34.5% is achieved by N-GQDs, compared with the N-free GQDs, as the substitutional N has an essential role in more effective radiative emission. Excessive N dopants in N-GQDs can lead to photoluminescence quenching, through nonradiative transition back to the ground state. The N-GQDs are further found to be suitable as photocurrent conversion materials due to benign energy matching with anatase nanofibers, the ultrafast electron injection at their interface, and efficient electron transfer. This work provides an efficient and inspiring approach to engineering both chemical components and physical properties of N-GQDs, and will therefore promote their basic research and applications in energy conversion.

Abstract:Here, nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs) were successfully synthesized by the solvothermal method using graphite as the carbon source and N,N-dimethylformamide as the nitrogen source. We characterized the structure and chemical constitution of N-CQDs using X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. We investigated the pump- and temperature-dependent photoluminescence (PL) properties and the dynamic exciton recombination processes of N-CQDs, using both steady-state and time-resolved PL techniques. The spectral results show that the PL emission peak located at 518 nm at room temperature, mainly originates from the n - p * transition on the surface of N-CQDs. The pump fluence and PL integral intensity were analyzed to demonstrate the existence of single -photon excitation under the 405 nm laser excitation. As the temperature increases, the non -radiative transition gradually increases, which decreases the PL intensity, the full width at half maxima first narrows and then widens and the PL lifetime gradually decreases. Furthermore, we combined the N-CQDs with chip to prepare light-emitting diode (LED). The resulting chromaticity coordinate was obtained to be (0.29, 0.40). This study offers a comprehensive understanding of the luminescence mechanism in N-doped CQDs and introduces a novel approach for the quickly fabrication of full-color display LEDs. Abstract:For the first time, a facile, ultrafast, ammoniadriven microwave-assisted synthesis of high-quality nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dots (NGQDs) at room temperature and atmospheric pressure is presented. This one-step method is very cheap, environment friendly, and suitable for large-scale production. The as-synthesized NGQDs consisting of one to three graphene monolayers exhibit highly crystalline quality with an average size of 5.3 nm. A new fluorescence (FL) emission peak at 390 nm is observed, which might be attributed to the doped nitrogen atoms into the GQDs. An interesting red-shift is observed by comparing the FL excitation spectra to the UV-visible absorption spectra. Based on the optical properties, the detailed Jablonski diagram representing the energy level structure of NGQDs is derived.

Abstract:Graphene quantum dots (GQDs) represent a new class of quantum dots with unique properties. Doping GQDs with heteroatoms provides an attractive means of effectively tuning their intrinsic properties and exploiting new phenomena for advanced device applications. Herein we report a simple electrochemical approach to luminescent and electrocatalytically active nitrogen-doped GQDs (N-GQDs) with oxygen-rich functional groups. Unlike their N-free counterparts, the newly produced N-GQDs with a N/C atomic ratio of ca. 4.3% emit blue luminescence and possess an electrocatalytic activity comparable to that of a commercially available Pt/C catalyst for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in an alkaline medium. In addition to their use as metal-free ORR catalysts in fuel cells, the superior luminescence characteristic of N-GQDs allows them to be used for biomedical imaging and other optoelectronic applications.

Abstract:Hydroxyl-graphene quantum dots (GQDs) modified mesoporous graphitic carbon nitride (mpg-C3N4) composites were fabricated through electrostatic interactions. A variety of techniques were applied to discuss systematic effect on the morphology, optical, electronic properties and structure of GQDs/mpg-C3N4 composites. Remarkably, the 0.5 wt% GQDsimpg-C3N4 composites exhibited higher photocatalytic activity than that of the pure mpg-C3N4 by using rhodamine B (RhB) and colorless tetracycline hydrochloride (TC) as pollutants under visible light irradiation. The results indicated that uniform dispersion of GQDs on the surface of mpg-C3N4 and intimate contact between the two materials contributed to the enhanced activity. Radical trapping experiments and electron spin resonance tests both certified that the GQDsimpg-C3N4 composites can generate more center dot O-2(-) species and a small fraction of holes for photocatalytic degradation. Abstract:We present a simple, environment-friendly, and fast synthesis of nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dots (N-GQDs) on copper foil by chemical vapor deposition using exclusively chitosan, a cheap and nontoxic biopolymer, as a carbon and nitrogen precursor. We characterized the synthesized N-doped graphene quantum dots using Raman spectroscopy, XPS, AFM, HRTEM, and HRSEM and found them to be in the range 10–15 nm in diameter and 2–5 nm-thick with 4.2% of maximum nitrogen content. The proposed growth mechanism process includes three key steps: (1) decomposition of chitosan into nitrogen-containing compounds, (2) adsorption of reactive species (HCN) on the copper surface, and (3) nucleation to form N-doped graphene quantum dots. The synthesized N-GQDs exhibit photoluminescence (PL) emission in the visible band region, thus making them suitable for applications in nano-optoelectronics.

Abstract:Sulfur-doped graphene quantum dots (S-GQDs) were synthesized by two facile hydrothermal technologies. The photoluminescence (PL) properties of the GQDs and S-GQDs samples were mainly investigated. Through regulating the content of S powders in S-GQDs synthesizing process, the optimal S-GQDs have a high S/C atomic ratio of 19.53%. The S doping introduce more functional groups on the C sp2 skeleton of S-3 sample and result in the appearance of the strong absorption band in the UV region. In comparison with other reported S-GQDs, the S-GQDs exhibit overwhelming high fluorescence quantum yield (57%) and excitation-independent emission, resulting from the outcome of the doped sulfur atoms. Moreover, the PL intensity of GQDs can be increased by doping it with S and the increasing efficiency depends on the thiophene sulfur content.

Abstract:The doping of carbon-based materials is of great importance due to its ability to modulate their optical, electrical and optoelectronic properties. Nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dots (N-GQDs) have received significant attention due to their superior electrocatalytic activity, optical properties and biocompatibility. The energy-level structure of N-GQDs remains unknown, which hinders the development of N-GQDs for various applications. Here, we report a one-pot synthesis method to prepare large-quantity N-GQDs at room temperature and atmospheric pressure under a prolonged reaction time. Using this approach, we can effectively dope N into the N-GQDs. As revealed by electron energy loss spectroscopy, N-doping introduces a new energy level into the electronic structure, which is responsible for tuning the optical properties of the N-GQDs.

Abstract:We report a facile hydrothermal synthesis of intrinsic fluorescent graphene quantum dots (GQDs) with two-dimensional morphology. This synthesis uses glucose, concentrate sulfuric acid, and deionized water as reagents. Concentrated sulfuric acid is found to play a key role in controlling the transformation of as-prepared hydrothermal products from amorphous carbon nanodots to well-crystallized GQDs. These GQDs show typical absorption characteristic for graphene, and have nearly excitation-independent ultraviolet and blue intrinsic emissions. Temperature-dependent PL measurements have demonstrated strong electron-electron scattering and electron-phonon interactions, suggesting a similar temperature behavior of GQDs to inorganic semiconductor quantum dots. According to optical studies, the ultraviolet emission is found to originate from the recombination of electron-hole pairs localized in the C-C bonds, while the blue emission is from the electron transition of sp(2) domains. Abstract:Interest in graphene as a two‐dimensional quantum‐well material for energy applications and nanoelectronics has increased exponentially in the last few years. The recent advances in large‐area single‐sheet fabrication of pristine graphene have opened unexplored avenues for expanding from nano‐ to meso‐scale applications. The relatively low level of absorptivity and the short lifetimes of excitons of single‐sheet graphene suggest that it needs to be coupled with light sensitizers in order to explore its feasibility for photonic applications, such as solar‐energy conversion. Red‐emitting CdSe quantum dots are employed for photosensitizing single‐sheet graphene with areas of several square centimeters. Pyridine coating of the quantum dots not only enhances their adhesion to the graphene surface, but also provides good electronic coupling between the CdSe and the two‐dimensional carbon allotrope. Illumination of the quantum dots led to injection of n‐carrier in the graphene phase. Time‐resolved spectroscopy reveals three modes of photoinduced electron transfer between the quantum dots and the graphene occurring in the femtosecond and picosecond time‐domains. Transient absorption spectra provide evidence for photoinduced hole‐shift from the CdSe to the pyridine ligands, thereby polarizing the surface of the quantum dots. That is, photoinduced electrical polarization, which favors the simultaneous electron transfer from the CdSe to the graphene phase. These mechanistic insights into the photoinduced interfacial charge transfer have a promising potential to serve as guidelines for the design and development of composites of graphene and inorganic nanomaterials for solar‐energy conversion applications.

Abstract:Nitrogen-doped graphene–ZnS quantum dots (NG–ZnS QDs) were synthesized by a one-pot hydrothermal process using graphene oxide and [(Zn2S2) (pa)] nanosheets as precursors. The results demonstrated that ZnS QDs deposited on the surface of the nitrogen-doped graphene (NG). Combined with series of our analysis and characterization, we found that [(Zn2S2) (pa)] nanosheets were used not only as the sources of ZnS QDs but also as the sources of nitrogen. Moreover, photocatalytic experiment of NG–ZnS QDs for organic dyes was conducted under visible light irradiation, and the results exhibited that the photocatalytic activities of resultant composites could be remarkably enhanced. This simple and catalyst-free approach for depositing ZnS QDs onto NG may provide an alternative way for preparation of other composites based on NG under mild conditions, which showed their potential applications in wastewater treatment.
