Abstract:Here we propose a scheme utilizing the double plasmon modes of gold nanorod (GNR) to efficiently enhance the fluorescence of surrounding emitters. The transversal and longitudinal surface plasmon resonance (TSPR and LSPR, respectively) modes of GNR are simultaneously utilized to enhance the excitation and emission efficiency, respectively. To demonstrate the idea, GNRs coated with an Oxazine-725 dye molecule-doped silica shell are employed. For comparison, gold nanospheres with the same shell are also studied, of which the single plasmon resonance mode matches only with the excitation wavelength of Oxazine-725. The experimental results, in agreement with theoretical simulations using the discrete dipole approximation method, successfully demonstrate the efficient excitation and emission enhancement of fluorescence assisted by the double SPRs of GNRs.

Abstract:The plasmon coupling between a Au nanorod and a small Au nanosphere has been studied with scattering measurements, electrodynamic simulations, and model analysis. The spatial perturbation of the nanosphere leads to distinct spectral changes of the heterodimer. The plasmonic responses, including Fano resonance, are remarkably sensitive to the nanosphere position on the nanorod, the gap distance, and the nanocrystal dimensions. The nanosphere dipole is intriguingly found to rotate around the nano rod dipole to achieve favorable attractive interaction for the bonding dipole dipole mode. The sensitive spectral response of the heterodimer to the spatial perturbation of the nanosphere offers an approach to designing plasmon rulers of two spatial coordinates for sensing and high-resolution measurements of distance changes.

Abstract:The plasmon coupling in the dimers of Au nanorods linked together at their ends with dithiol molecules has been studied. The plasmon coupling in the dimers composed of similarly sized nanorods gives antibonding and bonding plasmon modes. The plasmon wavelengths of the two modes have been found to remain approximately unchanged, with the scattering intensity ratio between the antibonding and bonding modes decaying rapidly as the angle between the nanorods is increased. This plasmon coupling behavior agrees with that obtained from both electrodynamic calculations and modeling on the basis of the dipole-dipole interaction. The electric field in the gap region is largely enhanced for the bonding mode, while that for the antibonding mode is even smaller than the far field, highlighting the importance of selecting appropriate plasmon modes for plasmon-enhanced spectroscopies. An anti-crossing-like behavior in the plasmon coupling energy diagram has further been revealed for linearly end-to-end assembled dimers composed of differently sized nanorods. This result will be useful for plasmonic applications where the plasmon wavelength is required to be controllable but without sacrificing the electric field enhancement.
Plasmonic Sensing Characteristics Of Gold Nanorods With Large Aspect Ratios

Abstract:Plasmonic gold nanorods play important roles in nowadays state-of-the-art plasmonic sensing techniques. Most of the previous studies and applications focused on gold nanorods with relatively small aspect ratios, where the plasmon wavelengths are smaller than 900 nm. Gold nanorods with large aspect ratios are predicted to exhibit high refractive-index sensitivity (Langmir 2008, 24, 5233-5237), which therefore should be promising for the development of high-performance plasmonic chemical- and bio-sensors. In this study, we developed gold nanorods with aspect ratios over 7.9, which exhibit plasmon resonances around 1064 nm. The refractive index (RI) sensitivity of these nanorods have been evaluated by varying their dielectric environment, whereby a sensitivity as high as 473 nm/RIU (refractive index unit) can be obtained. Furthermore, we have demonstrated the large-aspect-ratio nanorods as efficient substrate for surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS), where an enhancement factor (EF) as high as 9.47 x 10(8) was measured using 4-methylbenzenethiol (4-MBT) as probe molecule. Finally, a type of flexible SERS substrate is developed by conjugating the gold nanorods with the polystyrene (PS) polymer. The results obtained in our study can benefit the development of plasmonic sensing techniques utilized in the near-infrared spectral region.

Abstract:Gold nanoring arrays are widely applied in various fields benefitting from their localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) properties. A key advantage of gold nanoring arrays is that the dipole resonance peak can be systematically tuned by changing the dimensions of gold nanoring arrays. However, most of the currently reported methods for preparing gold nanoring arrays cannot conveniently control the heights of the nanorings at a low cost. Here we introduce a facile method for preparing gold nanoring arrays with tunable plasmonic resonances using colloidal lithography. The dimensions of the nanorings including diameters, lattice constants, even the heights of the nanorings can be conveniently varied. Fourier transform near-infrared (FT-NIR) absorption spectroscopy was used to obtain the plasmonic resonance spectra of the nanoring arrays. All the prepared gold nanoring arrays exhibited a strong NIR or infrared (IR) plasmonic resonance which can be tuned by varying the nanoring dimensions. This versatile method can also be used to fabricate other types of plasmonic nanostructures, such as gold nanocone arrays. The obtained gold nanoring arrays as well as nanocone arrays may have potential applications in surface-enhanced spectroscopy or plasmonic sensing.

Highly Enhanced Transverse Plasmon Resonance and Tunable Double Fano Resonances in Gold@Titania Nanorods

Abstract:Gold nanorods have attracted intensive interest owing to their localized surface plasmon resonance properties and enormous potential applications. The transverse plasmon of Au nanorods is usually weaker than the longitudinal one, hampering certain plasmonic applications. Herein we report on the intensification of the transverse plasmon resonance by coating TiO2 onto Au nanorods. The transverse plasmon mode of the resultant Au@TiO2 nanorods with a sufficiently thick shell can be comparable to or even stronger than the longitudinal one in intensity. Moreover, both the transverse and longitudinal plasmon resonances of the Au@TiO2 nanorods exhibit an asymmetric line shape on their scattering spectra. Electrodynamic simulations and analyses based on a coupled oscillator model suggest that the asymmetric line shape originates from the coupling between the Au core and TiO2 shell. Apart from the shell thickness, the plasmonic properties of the Au@TiO2 nanorods can also be tuned by the dimension of the Au nanorod core. In addition, the polarization-dependent light scattering from the individual Au@TiO2 nanorods has also been investigated. These results will be of high importance for understanding the interactions between noble metals and semiconductors in plasmonic hybrid nanosystems, and for designing novel plasmonic nanostructures with desired optical properties and functions.
Revealing the Mechanism of Photoluminescence from Single Gold Nanospheres by Defocused Imaging

Abstract:The mechanism for the photoluminescence (PL) emission from gold nanoparticles has attracted considerable attention for many years. However, there is an important gap between small nanoclusters (similar to 2 nm) and larger plasmonic particles (similar to 50 nm). In this work, using defocused imaging technique, we investigate the PL properties of gold nanospheres (15-20 nm in diameter) on a single particle level. Photoblinking and photobleaching phenomena are both observed. We notice that although these nanospheres can support surface plasmon resonance at similar to 515 nm, they emit at similar to 630 nm (excited by 532 nm), which is obviously plasmon-independent. The observed defocused images (DIs) exhibit isotropy first and then either transform into anisotropy or vanish rapidly. Surprisingly, the Dls can change their emission pattern within one single nanosphere during the tracing time. All these PL properties suggest a multiple-dipole emission model. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy images demonstrate that these nanospheres are polycrystalline containing multiple small crystal domains (similar to 3 nm). We believe that these small domains divide the particle into different clusters and give rise to the photoblinking behavior and rotary DIs. The presented PL mechanism links gold nanoclusters and single-crystal nanorods, which could be helpful in understanding the origins of photoblinking and the luminescent properties from metallic nanoparticles. In addition, these water-soluble gold nanospheres provide new opportunities for biological labels and light-emitting sources in nanophotonics.
Tunable Lattice Coupling of Multipole Plasmon Modes and Near-Field Enhancement in Closely Spaced Gold Nanorod Arrays

Abstract:Considering the nanogap and lattice effects, there is an attractive structure in plasmonics: closely spaced metallic nanoarrays. In this work, we demonstrate experimentally and theoretically the lattice coupling of multipole plasmon modes for closely spaced gold nanorod arrays, offering a new insight into the higher order cavity modes coupled with each other in the lattice. The resonances can be greatly tuned by changes in inter-rod gaps and nanorod heights while the influence of the nanorod diameter is relatively insignificant. Experimentally, pronounced suppressions of the reflectance are observed. Meanwhile, the near-field enhancement can be further enhanced, as demonstrated through surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). We then confirm the correlation between the near-field and far-field plasmonic responses, which is significantly important for maximizing the near-field enhancement at a specific excitation wavelength. This lattice coupling of multipole plasmon modes is of broad interest not only for SERS but also for other plasmonic applications, such as subwavelength imaging or metamaterials.

Abstract:In this study, gold nanoparticles (GNP) were stabilized for the first time as dimers by a conducting polymer (CP). The morphology of kissing particles was examined by high-resolution transmission electronic microscopy (HRTEM). The broad-band localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) tunable by solvent variation and molecular binding was demonstrated by UV-vis measurement. The sensitivity of the longitudinal LSPR to the surrounding media or the binding of a biomolecule was 6 times higher than that of the transversal LSPR. A homogeneous bioassay was directly developed from the highly stable GNP-CP dimers with LSPR as prober, and protein sensing with detection limit well below 100 ng/mL was achieved.

Abstract:The plasmon coupling between metal nanocrystals can lead to large plasmon shifts, enormous electric field enhancements, and new plasmon modes. Metal nanorods, unlike spherical ones, possess a transverse and a longitudinal plasmon mode owing to their geometrical anisotropy. Consequently, the plasmon coupling between metal nanorods is much more complicated than that between nanospheres. For the latter, experimental approaches, simple scaling relationships, and exact analytic solutions have been developed for describing the plasmon coupling. In this study, we have carried out extensive finite-difference time-domain simulations to understand the plasmon coupling in the dimers of Au nanorods that are aligned along their length axes. The effects of the gap distance, longitudinal plasmon energy, and end shape of the nanorod monomers on the plasmon coupling have been scrutinized. The coupling energy diagrams show a general anticrossing behavior. All of them can be rescaled into one simple and universal hyperbolic formula. A theoretical model based on two interacting mechanical oscillators has been developed to understand the plasmon coupling between two arbitrarily varying Au nanorods. This model, together with the universal equation, allows for the determination of the coupled plasmon energies of Au nanorod dimers with high accuracies. Furthermore, the Fano interference has been observed in the nanorod heterodimers, with its behavior being dependent on the gap distance and plasmon energies of the nanorod monomers. Our results will be useful for predicting the coupled plasmon energies of metal nanorod dimers in a variety of plasmonic applications and understanding the Fano resonance in plasmonic nanostructures.

Abstract:Noble metal nanoparticles show specific optical properties due to the excitation of localized surface plasmons that make them attractive candidates for highly sensitive bionanosensors. The underlying physical principle is either an analyte-induced modification of the dielectric properties of the medium surrounding the nanoparticle or an increase of the excitation and emission rates of an optically active analyte by the resonantly enhanced plasmon field. Either way, besides the nanoparticle geometry the dielectric properties of the metal and nanoscale surface roughness play an important role for the sensing performance. As the underlying principles are however not yet well understood, we aim here at an improved understanding by analyzing the optical characteristics of lithographically fabricated nanoparticles with different crystallinity and roughness parameters. We vary these parameters by thermal annealing and apply a thin gold film as a model system to retrieve modifications in the dielectric function. We investigate, on one hand, extinction spectra that reflect the far-field properties of the plasmonic excitation and, on the other hand, surface-enhanced Raman spectra that serve as a near-field probe. Our results provide improved insight into localized surface plasmons and their application in bionanosensing.

Abstract:We introduce individual nanoporous Au nanowire (AuNW) as a tunable one-dimensional platform for plasmon-enhanced fluorescence, with an enhancement factor of similar to 62, which is similar to 8-fold higher than that of smooth AuNWs. Besides, nanoporous AuNWs have much lower background emission than smooth AuNWs. These results indicate that nanoporous AuNWs are an excellent optical sensing platform.

Abstract:Strong Stokes and anti-Stokes one-photon luminescence from single gold nanorods is measured in experiments. It is found that the intensity and polarization of the Stokes and anti-Stokes emissions are in strong correlation. Our experimental observation discovered a coherent process in light emission from single gold nanorods. We present a theoretical mode, based on the concept of cavity resonance, for consistently understanding both Stokes and anti-Stokes photoluminescence. Our theory is in good agreement of all our measurements.

Abstract:We theoretically investigate the long-wavelength optical properties of a plasmonic crystal composed of end-to-end gold nanorod dimers. The strong coupling between incident light and the electron oscillations inside the nanorods gives rise to a plasmon polariton, which can be analogous to the phonon polariton in an ionic crystal. Huang-Kun-like equations are employed to explore the underlying physical mechanism for both symmetrical and asymmetrical geometries. In the long wavelength limit, the macroscopic dielectric response of the proposed structure is deduced analytically. The polariton dispersion curve shows a typical anticrossing profile in the strong coupling regime and adjacent branches are separated by a Rabi splitting. The resultant polaritonic stop band is validated by the numerical simulations.

Abstract:Plasmonic nanostructures have become the most promising candidates for biosensing applications because of their miniature sizes, ease of integration, and high-throughput detection. Both propagating and localized surface plasmon modes in the nanostructures have been used for sensing and biomolecular detection. However, to maximize the biosensing potential of nanostructures, the choice of an optimized sensing detection strategy among two plasmon modes depends on the relationship between the biomolecule sizes and field decay length of plasmon modes. Here, we propose and investigate plasmonic coupling on a single-crystalline gold film, wherein there are two distinct optical modes, a gap mode (localized surface plasmon) originating from the parallel coupling of a nanoring and a surface lattice mode (propagating surface plasmon) originating from the anti-parallel coupling of a nanoring in an array. The sensing performances of the above two modes are thoroughly investigated and compared by considering two aspects, i.e., bulk and surface sensitivities. It is demonstrated that there is a reciprocal relationship between bulk and surface sensitivities for two modes, which also illustrates that the surface sensitivity is indispensable to fully describe the sensing performance of nanostructures. Furthermore, due to their different decay lengths, the gap and surface lattice modes on a single optical substrate can achieve simultaneous detection of target analytes with various sizes. Therefore, we can provide a high performance sensing platform based on a metallic nanoring array for a broad range of biomolecules with various sizes.

Abstract:The interaction of incident light with noble metal nanoparticles engenders a fascinating phenomenon known as localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR). This results in the presence of single or multiple intense absorption bands in the visible to near-infrared spectral range whose position is affected by the refractive index of the surrounding medium. In this comprehensive study, we thoroughly investigated the experimental parameters governing the size, aspect ratio, and optical properties of hollow gold nanoshells (hAuNSs) synthesized through the galvanic exchange of cobalt-based nanospheres. Subsequently, we rigorously determined both the empirical and the theoretical refractive index sensitivity (RIS) and figure of merit (FoM) of these engineered nanostructures. Notably, hAuNS with an external diameter of 98 nm and a shell thickness of 13 nm demonstrated a noteworthy RIS of 360 nm/RIU and an FoM of 2.0 in solution. In contrast, solid gold nanospheres (sAuNSs) of a similar diameter exhibited a significantly lower RIS of 136 nm/RIU. Following the transfer of both of these nanostructures onto glass slides for the development of LSPR sensors, it was intriguing to note that the RIS and FoM remained largely unaffected. These findings underscore the potential of these plasmonic nanoparticles as promising candidates for the design of sensitive solid-phase LSPR sensing devices.

Abstract:Tunable surface plasmon resonance (SPR) and dipole cavity plasmon modes of the scattering cross section (SCS) spectra on the single solid-gold/gold-shell nanorod have been numerically investigated by using the finite element method. Various effects, such as the influence of SCS spectra under x- and y-polarizations on the surface of the single solid-gold/gold-shell nanorod, are discussed in detail. With the single gold-shell nanorod, one can independently tune the relative SCS spectrum width by controlling the rod length and rod diameter, and the surface scattering by varying the shell thickness and polarization direction, as well as the dipole peak energy. These behaviors are consistent with the properties of localized SPRs and offer a way to optically control and produce selected emission wavelengths from the single solid-gold/gold-shell nanorod. The electric field and magnetic distributions provide us a qualitative idea of the geometrical properties of the single solid-gold/gold-shell nanorod on plasmon resonance.

Abstract:We investigated the grating effect in complex gold dolmen structures, in which multiple plasmon modes are present due to plasmon hybridization, experimentally from both the far field and the near field. In particular, the near-field properties were investigated using photoemission electron microscopy, and it was demonstrated that two hybridized plasmon modes on the dolmen structures could be influenced by the grating effect. For comparison, we also investigated the grating effect in arrays of simple nanoblocks and heptamer structures, which were supposed to support a strong bright plasmon mode and a strong dark plasmon mode, respectively, in the near field. We found that the spectral responses of the two hybridized modes on the dolmen structures as the pitch size changed evolved in a manner similar to that of the bright dipole mode on the nanoblocks, whereas the dark mode on the heptamer structures is less sensitive to the pitch size.
