Abstract:We theoretically investigate dark dimer mode excitation and strong coupling with a nanorod dipole. Efficient excitation of a dark mode in a gold（Au） nanorod dimer using an electric dipole can be achieved by an optimal overlap between the dipole moment and dark modal field. By replacing the dipole emitter with an Au nanorod, a plane wave excited dipole mode in the nanorod can be effectively coupled to the dark dimer mode through nearfield interaction. At a 10-nm separation of the nanorod and the dimer, plasmonic interaction between dipole-dark modes enters the strong coupling regime with a Rabi-like splitting of 219.2 meV, which is further evidenced by the anticrossing feature and Rabi-like oscillation of electromagnetic energy of the coupled modes. Our results propose an efficient approach to far-field activating dark modes in coupled nanorod dimers and exchanging plasmonic excitations at nanoscale, which may open new opportunities for nanoplasmonic applications such as nanolasers or nanosensors.

Abstract:Strong plasmonic-molecular resonance coupling occurs between noble metal nanocrystals and organic adsorbates when the plasmonic resonance is degenerate with the molecular one. This interaction forms the basis for many fundamental studies and practical applications. We describe here the first direct measurement of the resonance coupling on single gold nanorods. The dark-field scattering technique is employed. The nanorods are embedded in hydrogel to facilitate uniform dye adsorption. The adsorbed dye molecules exhibit both monomer and H-aggregate absorption bands. The same gold nanorods are measured before and after the dye adsorption. Both strong and weak Coupling are investigated by selecting nanorods with different longitudinal plasmon bands. Excellent agreement between the experiments and an analytic theory is obtained. The resonance coupling reveals a unique three-band structure, The tunability of the coupling on individual nanorods is further demonstrated by photodecomposing the adsorbed dye molecules.

Abstract:The plasmon coupling in the dimers of Au nanorods linked together at their ends with dithiol molecules has been studied. The plasmon coupling in the dimers composed of similarly sized nanorods gives antibonding and bonding plasmon modes. The plasmon wavelengths of the two modes have been found to remain approximately unchanged, with the scattering intensity ratio between the antibonding and bonding modes decaying rapidly as the angle between the nanorods is increased. This plasmon coupling behavior agrees with that obtained from both electrodynamic calculations and modeling on the basis of the dipole-dipole interaction. The electric field in the gap region is largely enhanced for the bonding mode, while that for the antibonding mode is even smaller than the far field, highlighting the importance of selecting appropriate plasmon modes for plasmon-enhanced spectroscopies. An anti-crossing-like behavior in the plasmon coupling energy diagram has further been revealed for linearly end-to-end assembled dimers composed of differently sized nanorods. This result will be useful for plasmonic applications where the plasmon wavelength is required to be controllable but without sacrificing the electric field enhancement.
Coupling-induced Excitation of a Forbidden Surface Plasmon Mode of a Gold Nanorod

Abstract:Using the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method, we simulate the coupling between a gold nanorod and gold nanoparticles with different plasmonic resonant frequencies/volumes as well as that between the nanorod and a dielectric nanosphere. The influences of coupling with different nanoparticles on the excitation of a forbidden longitudinal surface plasmon mode of the nanorod under normal incidence are investigated. It is found that the cause of this excitation is the broken symmetry of the local electric field experienced by the nanorod resulting from the charge pileup on the other nanoparticle. This result is valuable for understanding the near-field optical characterization of plasmonic metal nanoparticles.

Abstract:By placing a single Au nanoparticle on the surface of a cadmium sulfide (CdS) nanowire, we demonstrate strong coupling of localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) modes in the nanoparticle and whispering gallery modes (WGMs) in the nanowire. For a 50-nm-diameter Au-nanosphere particle, strong coupling occurs when the nanowire diameter is between 300 and 600 nm, with a mode splitting up to 80 meV. Using a temperature-induced spectral shift of the resonance wavelength, we also observe the anticrossing behavior in the strongly coupled system. In addition, since the Au nanosphere has spherical symmetry, the supported LSPR mode can be selectively coupled with transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) WGMs in the nanowire. The ultracompact strong-coupling system shown here may provide a versatile platform for studying hybrid "photon-plasmon" nanolasers, nonlinear optical devices, and nanosensors.

Abstract:The plasmon coupling between metal nanocrystals can lead to large plasmon shifts, enormous electric field enhancements, and new plasmon modes. Metal nanorods, unlike spherical ones, possess a transverse and a longitudinal plasmon mode owing to their geometrical anisotropy. Consequently, the plasmon coupling between metal nanorods is much more complicated than that between nanospheres. For the latter, experimental approaches, simple scaling relationships, and exact analytic solutions have been developed for describing the plasmon coupling. In this study, we have carried out extensive finite-difference time-domain simulations to understand the plasmon coupling in the dimers of Au nanorods that are aligned along their length axes. The effects of the gap distance, longitudinal plasmon energy, and end shape of the nanorod monomers on the plasmon coupling have been scrutinized. The coupling energy diagrams show a general anticrossing behavior. All of them can be rescaled into one simple and universal hyperbolic formula. A theoretical model based on two interacting mechanical oscillators has been developed to understand the plasmon coupling between two arbitrarily varying Au nanorods. This model, together with the universal equation, allows for the determination of the coupled plasmon energies of Au nanorod dimers with high accuracies. Furthermore, the Fano interference has been observed in the nanorod heterodimers, with its behavior being dependent on the gap distance and plasmon energies of the nanorod monomers. Our results will be useful for predicting the coupled plasmon energies of metal nanorod dimers in a variety of plasmonic applications and understanding the Fano resonance in plasmonic nanostructures.

Abstract:The plasmon coupling in a nanorod dimer obeys the exponential size dependence according to the Universal Plasmon Ruler Equation. However, it was shown recently that such a model does not hold at short nanorod distance (Nano Lett. 2009, 9, 1651). Here we study the nanorod coupling in various cases, including nanorod dimer with the asymmetrical lengths and symmetrical dimer with the varying gap width. The asymmetrical nanorod dimer causes two plasmon modes: one is the attractive lower- energy mode and the other the repulsive high-energy mode. Using a simple coupled LC-resonator model, the position of dimer resonance has been determined analytically. Moreover, we found that the plasmon coupling of symmetrical cylindrical (or rectangular) nanorod dimer is governed uniquely by gap width scaled for the (effective) rod radius rather than for the rod length. A new Plasmon Ruler Equation without using the fitting parameters has been proposed, which agrees well with the FDTD calculations. The method has also been extended to study the plasmonic wave-guiding in a linear chain of gold nanorod particles. A field decay length up to 2700nm with the lateral mode size about 50nm (~wavelength/28) has been suggested.

Abstract:Chiral plasmonic nanostructures can produce strong chiral optical responses and have potential applications in photonics. Experimentally, metallic nanoparticle helices have been synthesized to achieve strong chiral responses. Strong coupling effects between the quantum emitters and the plasmon have attracted significant attention in the past decade and have been recently extended to the chiral plasmon of nanostructures. However, the strong coupling between molecules and metallic nanosphere helices has not been reported yet. In this article we study theoretically such an effect and examine the modulation of chiral and coupling effects by illumination light and molecular layer thickness. Our study may guide further experimental studies.
Strong Coupling Between Longitudinal and U-shaped Localized Surface Plasmon Modes in Rectangular Grating-Shaped Gold Nanostructures

Abstract:Strong couplings between localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) modes and single quantum emitters have been intensively investigated recently, and meanwhile the coupling between different LSPR modes inside individual metallic nanoparticle is still rarely researched. Herein, the strong coupling is investigated for different LSPR modes inside individual rectangular-grating-shaped gold nanostructure composed of one main-cuboid and two side-attached subcuboids. Original uncoupled LSPR modes are revealed to be longitudinal and U-shaped LSPRs. For the nanostructure with increased main-cuboid length, the dispersion curves of simulated dual-original LSPR scattering wavelengths and dual-coupled LSPR scattering wavelengths show typical strong coupling patterns featuring anti-crossing and large Rabi splitting of 598.1 meV. The strong coupling is considered to be caused by the overlap of longitudinal and U-shaped LSPR oscillation modes in the gold nanostructure. The extracted coupling strength is found in order of 10(13) Hz and it increases with the LSPR overlap length. The spatial mode and time evolution of the coupled LSPR modes are also numerically investigated. The simulated results are well comprehended with the classical strong coupling model of oscillators, further confirming the coupling between the longitudinal and the U-shaped LSPRs. The experimental dark-field scattering spectrum shows the existence of U-shaped LSPR mode in the gold nanostructure.
Long-wavelength Optical Properties of a Plasmonic Crystal Composed of End-to-end Nanorod Dimers

Abstract:We theoretically investigate the long-wavelength optical properties of a plasmonic crystal composed of end-to-end gold nanorod dimers. The strong coupling between incident light and the electron oscillations inside the nanorods gives rise to a plasmon polariton, which can be analogous to the phonon polariton in an ionic crystal. Huang-Kun-like equations are employed to explore the underlying physical mechanism for both symmetrical and asymmetrical geometries. In the long wavelength limit, the macroscopic dielectric response of the proposed structure is deduced analytically. The polariton dispersion curve shows a typical anticrossing profile in the strong coupling regime and adjacent branches are separated by a Rabi splitting. The resultant polaritonic stop band is validated by the numerical simulations.

At plasmon resonance frequencies, electrons on the surface of the slab are absorbed into spheres and contribute to plasmon oscillation. Abstract:The plasmon coupling between a Au nanorod and a small Au nanosphere has been studied with scattering measurements, electrodynamic simulations, and model analysis. The spatial perturbation of the nanosphere leads to distinct spectral changes of the heterodimer. The plasmonic responses, including Fano resonance, are remarkably sensitive to the nanosphere position on the nanorod, the gap distance, and the nanocrystal dimensions. The nanosphere dipole is intriguingly found to rotate around the nano rod dipole to achieve favorable attractive interaction for the bonding dipole dipole mode. The sensitive spectral response of the heterodimer to the spatial perturbation of the nanosphere offers an approach to designing plasmon rulers of two spatial coordinates for sensing and high-resolution measurements of distance changes.
Dark Plasmon Modes in Symmetric Gold Nanoparticle Dimers Illuminated by Focused Cylindrical Vector Beams

Abstract:The plasmon hybridization model of electromagnetic coupling between plasmonic nanoparticles predicts the formation of lower energy "bonding" and higher energy "antibonding" modes in analogy with the quantum mechanical description of chemical bonding. For a symmetric metallic nanoparticle dimer excited by linearly polarized light, the hybridization picture predicts that in-phase coupling of the dipole moments is optically allowed, creating bright "modes", whereas the out-of-phase coupling is dark due to the cancellation of the oppositely oriented dipole moments (in the quasistatic approximation). These bright modes are electric dipolar in nature and readily couple to scalar (i.e., linearly or circularly polarized) beams of light. We show that focused cylindrical vector beams, specifically azimuthally and radially polarized beams, directly excite dark plasmon modes in symmetric gold nanoparticle (AuNP) dimers at normal incidence. We use single-particle spectroscopy and electrodynamics simulations to study the resonance scattering of AuNP dimers illuminated by azimuthally and radially polarized light. The electric field distributions of the focused azimuthal or radial beams are locally polarized perpendicular or parallel to the AuNP dimer axis, but with opposite directions at each particle. Therefore, the associated combinations of single-particle dipole moments are out-of-phase, and the excitation (resonance) is of so-called "dark modes". In addition, multipole expansion of the fields associated with each scattering spectrum shows that the vector beam excitation involves driving multipolar, e.g., magnetic dipolar and electric quadrupolar, modes, and that they even dominate the scattering spectra (vs electric dipole). This work opens new opportunities for investigating dark plasmon modes in nanostructures, which are difficult to selectively excite by conventional polarized light.

Abstract:Plasmonic coupling in both metallic and graphene nanostructures, is of particular interest for fundamental physics and potential applications. Here, we study plasmonic coupling in gold nanorings possessing different vertical thickness, by using three-dimensional finite element method as implemented in COMSOL MULTIPHYSICS. As well known, the coupling between inner and outer edges will result in mode splitting, namely, a symmetric (lower frequency) mode and an antisymmetric (higher frequency) mode; and a larger coupling corresponds to a larger mode shifting, e.g. with a blueshift for the antisymmetric mode and a redshift for the symmetric mode. However, in very thin gold nanorings, we find as increasing the ratio of inner radius to outer radius (equivalently increasing the coupling), the antisymmetric mode exhibits a redshift at first and then a blueshift, which is consistent with that in graphene nanorings of zero thickness. We show this unusual coupling effect depends on the thickness and size of nanorings, and is more significant in nanorings of smaller thickness and size. Our work is a nature extension of recent plasmonic studies, and offers an alternative way to tune in-plane plasmonic resonances by the vertical dimension.
Strong Dipole-Quadrupole-Exciton Coupling Realized in a Gold Nanorod Dimer Placed on a Two-Dimensional Material.

Abstract:Simple systems in which strong coupling of different excitations can be easily realized are highly important, not only for fundamental research but also for practical applications. Here, we proposed a T-shaped gold nanorod (GNR) dimer composed of a long GNR and a short GNR perpendicular to each other and revealed that the dark quadrupole mode of the long GNR can be activated by utilizing the dipole mode excited in the short GNR. It was found that the strong coupling between the dipole and quadrupole modes can be achieved by exciting the T-shaped GNR dimer with a plane wave. Then, we demonstrated the realization of strong dipole–quadrupole–exciton coupling by placing a T-shaped GNR on a tungsten disulfide (WS2) monolayer, which leads to a Rabi splitting as large as ~299 meV. It was confirmed that the simulation results can be well fitted by using a Hamiltonian based on the coupled harmonic oscillator model and the coupling strengths for dipole–quadrupole, dipole–exciton and quadrupole–exciton can be extracted from the fitting results. Our findings open new horizons for realizing strong plasmon–exciton coupling in simple systems and pave the way for constructing novel plasmonic devices for practical applications.
Study of plasmon resonance in a gold nanorod with an LC circuit model

Abstract:Gold nanorod has generated great research interest due to its tunable longitudinal plasmon resonance. However, little progress has been made in the understanding of the effect. A major reason is that, except for metallic spheres and ellipsoids, the interaction between light and nanoparticles is generally insoluble. In this paper, a new scheme has been proposed to study the plasmon resonance of gold nanorod, in which the nanorod is modeled as an LC circuit with an inductance and a capacitance. The obtained resonance wavelength is dependent on not only aspect ratio but also rod radius, suggesting the importance of self-inductance and the breakdown of linear scaling. Moreover, the cross sections for light scattering and absorption have been deduced analytically, giving rise to a Lorentzian line-shape for the extinction spectrum. The result provides us with new insight into the phenomenon.

Understanding the Coupling Mechanism of Gold Nanostructures by Finite-Difference Time-Domain Method

Abstract:Gold nanoparticle assemblies show a strong plasmonic response due to the combined effects of the individual nanoparticles' plasmon modes. Increasing the number of nanoparticles in structured assemblies leads to significant shifts in the optical and physical properties. We use Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) simulations to analyze the electromagnetic response of structurally ordered gold nanorods in monomer and dimer configurations. The plasmonic coupling between nanorods in monomers or dimers configurations provides a unique technique for tuning the spectrum intensity, spatial distribution, and polarisation of local electric fields within and surrounding nanostructures. Our study shows an exponential coupling behavior when two gold nanorods are assembled in end-to-end and side-by-side dimer configurations with a small separation distance. The maximum electric field in the gaps between adjacent nanorods in end-to-end dimer configuration describes a more significant enhancement factor than the individual gold nanorod. Our FDTD simulation on dimer in end-to-end assembly for small separation distance up to ~ 40 nm can well explain the observed experimental growth dynamics of gold nanorods.

Abstract:Strong interaction between emitters and plasmonic nanocavity has various applications in quantum fields at room temperature. As Rabi oscillation gives the direct proof to the energy exchange in strong coupling, it is more intuitive and necessary to analyze the interaction in time domain. In this paper, we give the Rabi oscillation in a high-dissipation plasmonic nanocavity by using full-quantum method and draw a new strong coupling criterion about mode volume which provides a significant guidance in plasmonic nanocavitys nanofabrication. Moreover, we reveal the relation between Rabi oscillation and Rabi splitting, which is beneficial for exploring emitter–plasmon hybrid systems time-domain property through frequency-domain response. An emitter–hexagon hybrid system with ultrasmall mode volume is designed to verify our theory. The numerical simulation shows good agreements with our theoretical results. Our work has applications in quantum information and quantum computing in the future.

Abstract:We present calculations of the optical force on heterodimer of two gold nanorods aligned head-to-tail, under plane wave illumination that is polarized along the dimer axis. It is found that near the dipole-quadrupole Fano resonance, the optical binding force between the nanorods reverses, indicating an attractive to repulsive transition. This is in contrast to homodimer which in similar configuration shows no negative binding force. Moreover, the force spectrum features asymmetric line shape and shifts accordingly when the Fano resonance is tuned by varying the nanorods length or their gap. We show that the force reversal is associated with the strong phase variation between the hybridized dipole and quadrupole modes near the Fano dip. The numerical results may be demonstrated by a nearfield optical tweezer and shall be useful for studying "optical matters" in plasmonics. © 2013 Optical Society of America.
