Abstract:In this Letter, we show how to obtain high-contrast widefield evanescent wave illuminated subdiffraction imaging through controlling nanoscale light-matter interaction. The light coupling, propagation, and far-field imaging processes show strong polarization selectivity and film quality dependence, which is used to improve the imagecontrast- to-noise ratio (CNR) and to enlarge the field of view (FOV). Abstract:Linear super-resolution microscopy via synthesis aperture approach permits fast acquisition because of its wide-field implementations, however, it has been limited in resolution because a missing spatial-frequency band occurs when trying to use a shift magnitude surpassing the cutoff frequency of the detection system beyond a factor of two, which causes ghosting to appear. Here, we propose a method of chip-based 3D nanoscopy through large and tunable spatial-frequency-shift effect, capable of covering full extent of the spatial-frequency component within a wide passband. The missing of spatial-frequency can be effectively solved by developing a spatial-frequency-shift actively tuning approach through wave vector manipulation and operation of optical modes propagating along multiple azimuthal directions on a waveguide chip to interfere. In addition, the method includes a chip-based sectioning capability, which is enabled by saturated absorption of fluorophores. By introducing ultra-large propagation effective refractive index, nanoscale resolution is possible, without sacrificing the temporal resolution and the field-of-view. Imaging on GaP waveguide material demonstrates a lateral resolution of lamda/10, which is 5.4 folds above Abbe diffraction limit, and an axial resolution of lamda/19 using 0.9 NA detection objective. Simulation with an assumed propagation effective refractive index of 10 demonstrates a lateral resolution of lamda/22, in which the huge gap between the directly shifted and the zero-order components is completely filled to ensure the deep-subwavelength resolvability. It means that, a fast wide-field 3D deep-subdiffraction visualization could be realized using a standard microscope by adding a mass-producible and cost-effective spatial-frequency-shift illumination chip.

Abstract:Existing super-resolution imaging technology relies on rigid and bulky systems, which limits its application in narrow space. Endoscopy based on multimode fibers (MMF) has emerged as a significant solution for in vivo imaging. There is a high requirement to observe samples inside the lumen of the body simultaneously break through the diffraction limit. We propose the frequency-shift mechanism for universal super-resolution imaging with light-field encoded modulation. In this paper, we demonstrate our method for a single MMF in vivo imaging at subcellular resolution through light-field encoded, which can also ensure stable imaging under various operating conditions.

Abstract:Far-field super-resolution imaging techniques such as stimulated emission depletion (STED), stochastic optical reconstruction microscopy (STORM), and photoactivation localization microscopy (PALM) etc., have enabled fluorescence labeled nanoscale imaging and analysis. However, it is necessary or preferable to develop label-free high resolution imaging techniques to avoid the problems of phototoxicity with live cells and moreover, for many non-biological applications where fluorescent labelling is simply not feasible. Recently, by capturing the exponentially decaying evanescent waves and propagating it to far field, novel imaging technique like hyperlens and microsphere contacting technologies, micro-fiber and nanowire illumination technology have brought new opportunities to label-free super resolution imaging, but still suffer from weak signal compared to background noise. On the other hand, there is lack of criteria reported to quantify the imaging quality of label free far-field nanoscopy, that will slow down the developing of label-free far-field nanoscopy. We introduce CNR first to label-free far-field nanoscopy to quantify the imaging performance and investigate the key influencing elements systematically. In our study, we investigated and analyzed the key elements to achieve high CNR label-free wide-field far-field sub-diffraction imaging. By optimizing the key factors including polarization, materials, as well as fabrication conditions, sub-diffraction imaging with resolution of 122 nm in a large FOV has been achieved experimentally. This work has provided an efficient and convenient way to realize high contrast wide-field far-field label-free super-resolution based on evanescent wave illumination.

Abstract:Near-field subwavelength imaging based on negative refraction in wave-like two-dimensional photonic crystals within infrared band. The adopted rectangular iso-frequency surface results in the inhomogereity of wave-like two-dimensional photonic crystal unavoidably, so the imaging is confined in the near-field region. For the lack of the circular-shaped iso-frequency surface in photonic crystal matching that of the incident medium, far-field imaging based on negative refraction is unavailable in wave-like two-dimensional photonic crystal. The finite-difference time-domain method is used to simulate the near-field imaging in wave-like two-dimensional photonic crystal of different thickness. The resolution of 0.28λ is achieved for single point source when the thickness of photonic crystal is twice of lattice constant. The resolution will gradually degrade as the source moves beyond the near-field domain. Meanwhile, the image is strongly confined in the near-field region on the other side of photonic crystal in spite of the change of source position and photonic crystal thickness. In order to further demonstrate the subwavelength imaging ability of wave-like two-dimensional photonic crystal, double sources are used. Resolution of 0.35λ is obtained, but the imaging quality depends on the thickness of photonic crystal greatly.

Abstract:Super-resolution acoustic imaging with state-of-the-art spatial resolution (lambda/50), with lambda being the wavelength, is showcased with a holey-structured metalens. However, the imaging mechanism under unity transmission based on Fabry-Perot resonances means the metalens fundamentally suffers from narrow bandwidth and limited deep-subwavelength contrast, and therefore further advancement of deepsubwavelength imaging has been stalled. Here we break the barriers for deep-subwavelength acoustic imaging comprehensively in spatial resolution, resolving contrast, and working bandwidth, by exploiting field enhancement inside the metalens. A microscopic model is established to theoretically reveal the underlying physics for escalated deep-subwavelength acoustic imaging. For a proof-of-concept, the imaging performance of the proposed method is numerically proven and experimentally demonstrated. Specifically, a breakthrough resolution below lambda/100 is achieved while resolving contrast is improved by at least 6.5 times and working bandwidth is broadened to approximately 25% of the operating frequency. Furthermore, pulsed acoustic imaging on the deep-subwavelength scale is showcased, which is an important step towards the practical application of the ultrahigh-resolution acoustic imaging technique. We believe the work presented here may greatly benefit a variety of fields in acoustics, such as visualizing subcutaneous structures in medical diagnosis and characterizing subsurface flaws in industrial nondestructive evaluation.

Abstract:A metallic slab lens featured with specially designed nano slits is presented to realize imaging for arbitrary object and image distances. Based on the particular propagation properties of surface plasmon polaritons in nanostructures, slits perforated in silver slab are designed with variant widths to produce desired optical phase retardations. Numerical simulation of an illustrative lens is performed through finite-difference time-domain method and shows that subwavelength imaging is realized at the designed position.

Abstract:Here we demonstrate an active method which pioneers in utilizing a combination of a spatial frequency shift and a Stokes frequency shift to enable wide-field far-field subdiffraction imaging. A fluorescent nanowire ring acts as a localized source and is combined with a film waveguide to produce omnidirectional illuminating evanescent waves. Benefitting from the high wave vector of illumination, the high spatial frequencies of an object can be shifted to the passband of a conventional imaging system, contributing subwavelength spatial information to the far-field image. A structure featuring 70-nm-wide slots spaced 70 nm apart has been resolved at a wavelength of 520 nm with a 0.85 numerical aperture standard objective based on this method. The versatility of this approach has been demonstrated by imaging integrated chips, Blu-ray DVDs, biological cells, and various subwavelength 2D patterns, with a viewing area of up to 1000 μm^{2}, which is one order of magnitude larger than the previous far-field and full-field nanoscopy methods. This new resolving technique is label-free, is conveniently integrated with conventional microscopes, and can potentially become an important tool in cellular biology, the on-chip industry, as well as other fields requiring wide-field nanoscale visualization.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate subwavelength imaging by a "flat cylindrical" lens using negative refraction. A two-dimensional photonic crystal whose dispersion at the second band provides group velocity opposite to the phase velocity for electromagnetic waves is employed to realize the flat lens, and the working frequency is chosen so that the effective refractive index is approximately equal to -1.0. Experiment demonstrated the imaging of a point source in both amplitude and phase in the millimeter-wave regime. By measuring the field distributions in the object plane and image plane, we observed amplification of evanescent waves and subwavelength size image. The image of two incoherent sources with subwavelength distance showed two resolvable spots, which served to further verify subwavelength resolution.

Abstract:We report the experimental demonstration of deeply subwavelength far-field optical imaging of unlabelled samples with resolution better than $\lambda/20$. We beat the ~$\lambda$/2 diffraction limit of conventional optical microscopy several times over by recording the intensity pattern of coherent light scattered from the object into the far-field. We retrieve information about the object with a deep learning neural network trained on scattering events from a large set of known objects.

Abstract:The record of imaging resolution has kept being refreshed in the past decades and the best resolution of hyperlenses and superlenses so far is about one out of tens in terms of wavelength. In this paper, by adopting a hybrid concept of transformation optics and singular media, we report a broadband meta-lens design methodology with ultra-high resolution. The meta-lens is made of subwavelength metal/air layers, which exhibit singular medium property over a broad band. As a proof of concept, the subwavelength imaging ability is demonstrated over a broad frequency band from 1.5–10 GHz with the resolution varying from 1/117 to 1/17 wavelength experimentally.

Abstract:We demonstrate high numerical aperture (NA=0.8) transmissive metasurface-based lenses with efficiencies as high as 86% in the visible spectrum. Meta-lenses allow diffraction-limited focusing at red (λ=660 nm), green (λ=532 nm), and blue (λ=405 nm) wavelengths. They can resolve nanoscale features with subwavelength gaps.

Abstract:Label-free and real time far-field super-resolution imaging (hyperlensing) at the nanoscale is of significant interest where sub-λ imaging remains a constraint because of Abbe's diffraction limit. Though by utilizing anisotropic permittivities, metal-dielectric multilayers have been successful in reconstructing high-frequency components of sub-λ objects, yet they remain cumbersome and expensive to make. Most of the multilayer structures require multiple vacuum deposition cycles and are plagued by stringent requirements on the surface roughness of metallic layers. In contrast to the multilayer structure here we propose a 3D hyperbolic metamaterial model composed of metallic nanorods arranged in a sea-urchin geometry as a hyper-lensing device, which is capable of projecting and magnifying diffraction limited information into the far-field at Near-infrared (NIR) frequencies. The hyperlens generates a band of flat hyperbolic dispersions in spherical coordinates, which in turn supports the propagation of high wave-vector spatial harmonics leading to far-field super-resolution imaging. Using full-wave finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations with diffraction limited trimer, quadrumer and ringed objects etched on thin perfect electric conductor (PEC) films, we show that the hyperlens model can achieve magnification factors of up to 10× in the far-field (∼4.5λ from the object's surface) under a light source with a wavelength of 1 μm, with successful resolution down to 220 nm (∼λ/5). The magnified image field distribution projected into the far-field is shown to follow the object under a reduction in the symmetry. These results are important for making progress in the realization of real-time biomolecular imaging systems, eliminating the need for near-field scanning, destructive electron microscopy and various image post-processing techniques.

Abstract:We propose a wide-field super-resolved optical microscopic imaging technique based on subwavelength slit arrays embedded in a thin silver film to generate surface plasmon (SP) standing wave interference patterns. These fringes carrying high spatial frequency information serve as excitation profiles to excite the nanoscale fluorescence objects. The super-resolved fluorescence density distribution is reconstructed from a weight sum of a series of fluorescence images with differently phase-shifted SP standing wave illumination. Simulation and experimental results show that the lateral resolution of the reconstructed fluorescence density image is enhanced by 0.28 λ SP in two dimensions, which is twofold better than that of conventional high numerical aperture fluorescence microscopy. This technique benefits from a grating coupler to offer a simple way for the generation and phase shift of SP standing wave excitation profiles in two dimensions. The flat configuration, wide field, and noninvasive nature make this approach suitable for real-time analyzing the fine details of bio-samples in biochip applications.

Abstract:We report single-shot measuring nanoscale dimensions of randomly positioned objects by an artificial intelligence examination of their optical diffraction patterns. The technique is based on training of a deep learning neural network with a large number of diffraction patterns of objects of a priori known dimensions. To demonstrate, we measured the width of 840 nanometric slits milled in an opaque metal film, using a conventional microscope and illuminated by a laser (λ=633 nm) while the light diffracted on the object was mapped at different distances from the object by a camera equipped with a high numerical aperture lens. Information on the slit width may be obtained from: a) overall intensity of light transmitting through the slit (larger slits transmit better), or b) analysis of fringes at the diffraction pattern. We tested both regimes using a standard deep learning protocol. The results of these experiments are presented in Fig. 1 as plots of the retrieved widths of 84 different slits that have never been seen by the neural network against their widths measured by scanning electron microscopy (SEM).

Abstract:The imaging resolution of a conventional optical microscope is limited by diffraction to about half of the illuminating wavelength. A micro/submicron particle induced near-field effect can focus an incident laser beam to a small region of tens of nanometres. Using self-assembled transparent microspheres as far-field superlenses (FSLs), here we report the first experimental demonstration of combined structural, thermal, and stress imaging at a 20 nm resolution (<λ/26, λ=532 nm), even though the laser beam is at μm size. FSLs are integrated into a confocal Raman spectrometer and microscope system to overcome the diffraction limit. Periodical surface structure, thermal and stress information is examined. Furthermore, electromagnetic simulation is conducted to well interpret the experimental results. FSLs provide new opportunities in nanoscale imaging, nanolithography and nanotexturing.
