Abstract:We report on a widely tunable, narrow linewidth operation of a Tm:YAG ceramic laser. A volume Bragg grating is used in the cavity as a folding mirror for wavelength selection. The wavelength is tuned from 1956.2 to 1995 nm, leading to a total tuning range of 38.7 nm. The linewidth is around 0.1 nm over the whole tuning range. A maximum output power of 1.51 W at 1990.5 nm is achieved at 37.8 W absorbed pump power. Different saturation behaviors are observed in the laser performances at different wavelengths.

Abstract:A 2 μm laser has important applications and prospects in various fields such as LIDAR, material processing, environmental monitoring, and space communication, as well as fundamental researches. Being designed for the room-temperature operation, our Tm:YLF laser with L flat concave resonator incorporates a laser-diode end-pump setup, in which a volume Bragg grating and double Fabry–Pérot etalons serve as a line-width limiting element. With an injection power of 49.58 W, a maximum output power of 17.78 W is achieved with a center wavelength of 1908.55 nm and a linewidth limited from 2 to 0.1 nm. A corresponding slope efficiency of 42.89% and an optical–optical conversion efficiency of 35.86% are obtained.

Abstract:We have experimentally demonstrated a highly efficient diode-pumped Tm:YAG ceramic laser operating at 2 μm wavelength. The maximum output power of 6.05 W was realized with a slope efficiency as high as 65%. As far as we know, it is the highest slope efficiency reported for Tm:YAG ceramic laser. The wavelength tuning experiment of Tm:YAG ceramic laser was carried out and the results suggest that Tm:YAG ceramic laser could operate simultaneously at multiple wavelengths in a wide range of 1884-2017 nm.

Abstract:We report on single-longitudinal-mode and tunable operation of an Er:Y2O3 ceramic laser at ∼2.7 μm using intracavity Fabry-Perot etalons combined with a birefringent filter. The laser is pumped with a high brightness, narrow linewidth diode source at ∼980 nm and generated over 240 mW of linearly polarized output power at 2717 nm for an absorbed pump power of 5.1 W. The wavelength tuning range demonstrated was spanned from 2708.6 nm–2741.2 nm, with output powers of >220 mW in the whole tuning range.

Abstract:A Tm-doped large mode area (LMA) silica fiber laser has been locked to a stable wavelength of 2,053.9 nm using a volume Bragg grating (VBG). The measured spectral width of the laser output was <300 pm, limited by the spectrometer resolution. Although this laser had modest output (approximately 5W) and slope efficiency (41%), this new approach to spectrally limiting the output of LMA fiber lasers is inherently extendable to kilowatt powers, opening up several applications including high-power pulsed fiber lasers and spectral beam combining. Performance characteristics of the laser compared to one using a dielectric mirror as a high reflector are described, and the results imply low VBG losses.

Abstract:A highly controllable optical bistability in a Tm: YAG ceramic laser system is reported, which is attributed to the thermal-induced change in the stability of the resonator. The width of the bistable region can be tuned in a large scale from 0.8 W to 6.3 W. At nearly semi-confocal cavity configuration, a second lasing condition was observed in the bistable region with a modulated shape of the laser beam and a broadened laser spectrum. The influence of the temperature on the bistable laser operation was also discussed in detail. To our knowledge, this is the first report on the optical bistability effect in Tm:YAG ceramic lasers. Abstract:A high-power Tm:YAG ceramic slab laser is reported. Deliberate thermal management was made to dissipate the heat effectively and release the stress in ceramics. The influence of pump wavelength on laser performance was investigated. A maximum of 52 W output power was achieved, corresponding to a slope efficiency of 27.8 % with respect to the incident pump power. As to our knowledge, this is the highest 2-μm laser output power reported in Tm:YAG ceramic lasers. This result proves that Tm:YAG laser ceramic is a promising candidate for 2-μm high-power laser applications.

Abstract:Abstract We demonstrated a 202 W Tm:YLF slab laser using a reflecting volume Bragg grating (VBG) as an output coupler at room temperature. Two kinds of active heat dissipation methods were used for the VBG to suppress the shift of wavelength caused by its increasing temperature. The maximum continuous wave (CW) output power of 202 W using the microchannel cooling was obtained under the total incident pump power of 553 W, the corresponding slope efficiency and optical-to-optical conversion efficiency were 39.7% and 36.5%, respectively. The central wavelength was 1908.5 nm with the linewidth (full width at half maximum) of 0.57 nm. Meanwhile, with the laser output increasing from 30 to 202 W, the total shift was about 1.0 nm, and the wavelength was limited to two water absorption lines near 1908 nm. The beam quality factors M 2 were measured to be 2.3 and 4.0 in x and y directions at 202 W.

Abstract:In this letter, a narrow line-width ytterbium-doped fiber ring laser with a fiber Bragg grating inside the cavity is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. In order to realize single longitudinal mode (SLM) output, an un-pumped ytterbium-doped fiber is used as an SLM selector. First, the effect of the coupler output ratio on the output power and the threshold power is discussed in this proposed laser, and the coupler output ratio of 30% is adopted at last. Furthermore, the spectrum and frequency spectra are analyzed to obtain the line width and frequency stability. Finally, the output power with fluctuation in half an hour is measured to evaluate the power stability. The results show that the output power of 7 mW, signal-to-noise ratio greater than 65 dB at 1069 nm, line width less than 500 Hz, and power stability below 1.5% can be achieved for the laser.

Abstract:A widely tunable single-longitudinal-mode (SLM) ytterbium-doped fiber laser is experimentally demonstrated, which is achieved by combining a fiber Lyot filter and a saturable absorber in a ring cavity. Stable SLM operation from 1045 nm to 1076 nm is obtained by properly adjusting the polarization state. The output power reaches 7.5 dBm with a fluctuation of less than 2 dB. The optical signal-to-noise ratio is 42.5 dB with a fluctuation of less than 6 dB in this wavelength range.

Abstract:We present a 2.09μm single-longitudinal-mode sandwich-type YAG/Ho:YAG/YAG ceramic laser pumped by a Tm-doped fiber laser for the first time. A pair of F-P etalons was used to achieve tunable single-longitudinal-mode operation. The maximum single-longitudinal-mode output power of 530mW at 2091.4nm was obtained with an absorbed pump power of 8.06W, corresponding to an optical conversion efficiency of 6.6% and a slope efficiency of 12.7%. Wavelength tunable was achieved by tuning the angle of etalons and the wavelength could be tuned from 2091.1nm to 2092.1nm, corresponding to a tuning frequency of 68GHz. The M2 factor was measured to be 1.23.

Abstract:We report on the continuous-wave and tunable laser operation of transparent 10 at% Yb:Y 3 Sc 1.5 Al3.5 O 12 (Yb:YSAG) ceramics, which have a dense and homogenous microstructure after being sinteredat 1820 °C for 10 h. The Yb:YSAG ceramics have excellent optical in-line transmittancecharacteristics. The broad absorption and emission spectra of Yb:YSAG demonstrated that theseceramics are suitable for laser-diode pumping solid-state lasers. For the 2-mm thick ceramic, acontinuous-wave output power of 1.79 W at 1031 nm was measured with a slope efficiency of 18.3%, anda smooth tunable spectra ranging from 1021 nm to 1040 nm has been obtained, with a tunablewavelength exceeding approximately 19 nm.

Abstract:We present a novel electro-optically tuned external-cavity diode laser (ECDL) that utilizes a volume Bragg grating (VBG) as the frequency selective feedback element and a piece of high electro-optic coefficient Lead Lanthanum Zirconate Titanate (PLZT) transparent ceramic as the frequency tuning element. By adjusting the voltage applied onto the PLZT, a single-mode frequency tuning range of 2.5GHz without mode hoping is achieved. The laser wavelength is around 810.0nm with the line-width of 19MHz and the side mode suppression ratio (SMSR) of 37dB. The advantages of combining a VBG and PLZT transparent electro-optic ceramic is that the laser frequency can be tuned finely and rapidly in a range of longitudinal mode spacing without mode hoping. Moreover, the wide-range coarse frequency tuning of 32.7 GHz can also be realized by changing the angle of incident light beam.

Abstract:An external cavity feedback structure based on volume Bragg grating is introduced to realize the spectral stabilization and linewidth narrowing of a diode laser with a central wavelength of 968.668 nm and a spectral linewidth of 0.405 nm. A diode laser source producing 1.443 kW power from an output fiber with a core diameter of 1000 μm is achieved by using a spatial beam, combining, and polarization multiplexing technologies. The external cavity feedback and fiber coupling efficiencies exceed 93% and 90%, respectively. Such a high-power narrow-linewidth diode laser can be applied in Yb: YAG pumping efficiently and stably.

Abstract:A diode-end-pumped tunable twisted-mode cavity Tm, Ho:YAG laser with single-longitudinal-mode (SLM) operation is demonstrated in this Letter. Abstract:A type of Tm-doped silica fiber laser with narrow-linewidth and output wavelength near 1750 nm was firstly presented, by using a 1550 nm Er-doped fiber laser pump source and a volume Bragg grating (VBG). By means of a 15 cm Tm-doped fiber, a 400 mW continuous wave (cw) at ~1750 nm with FWHW of ~54 pm was generated, corresponding to an average slope efficiency up to 23.5% with respect to absorbed pump power. The influence of gain fiber length on the spectrum wavelength has been investigated in detail. All experimental results demonstrate that this fiber laser will be an effective and promising pump source for mid-IR laser output.

Abstract:We first demonstrate a high-efficiency composite Tm-doped yttrium aluminum garnet laser end-pumped with a narrow-linewidth laser diode, which was locked at a wavelength of 784.9 nm with volume Bragg gratings. The locked pump wavelength was experimentally determined by the excitation peak, which was also the absorption peak of a 3.5 at.% Tm: YAG crystal around 785 nm, for the improvement of laser efficiency under high-intensity pumping. Under an absorbed pump power of 24.64 W, a maximum output power of 11.12 W at 2018 nm was obtained, corresponding to an optical to optical conversion efficiency of 45.1% and a slope efficiency of 52.4%.

Abstract:A disordered crystal of Tm:GYAP with a doping concentration of 5 at.% was designed and grown. Test results show that the fluorescence spectral half-height width of this crystal is 203 nm, which implies that this crystal is capable of realizing a wide wavelength-tunable laser operation in the 2 μm band. In this study, the Tm:GYAP crystal based laser with a center wavelength of 1936.2 nm and a spectral width of 7.56 nm had been realized by using a compact straight cavity structure. Under a pumping of 8.55 W, a maximum output power of 0.841 W was obtained, and the corresponding optical-to-optical conversion efficiency and the slope efficiency were 9.8% and 12.7%, respectively. In addition, the wavelength-tunable laser operation of Tm:GYAP crystal was realized for the first time by inserting a birefringent filter. The tuning range of the output laser exceeded 120 nm (from 1911.8 nm to 2039.5 nm) even in the compact straight cavity.

Abstract:In the Tm3+ doped YAG crystal, the Tm3+ ions are excited into the H-3(4) state from H-3(6) state by absorbing pump radiation at similar to 785 nm, and the ions then relax down to the upper lasing level F-3(4). The laser radiation takes place between the lower Stark level of 3F4 and the higher Stark level of H-3(6). The considerable phonon broadening and high multiplicity of the Stark levels of the 4f electron provides tunability from 1.87 to 2.16 mu m. We presented an analysis for the performance of side pumped quasi-three-level laser oscillators. Taking into account reabsorption loss, we present a theoretical model studies of quasi-three-level laser with particular attention given to the Tm:YAG laser. Equation for Tm: YAG quasi three-level laser system is founded, and a formula of the threshold pump power of the laser is described. The threshold pump power with different emission wavelengths versus the transmission of the output coupler is discussed, and we also analysis the influence on the threshold pump power with different emission wavelengths affected by the crystal length. With the same pump power, a lower transmission of the output coupler would result in a higher intracavity intensity. As a result, the lower laser sub-level within H-3(6) ground state manifold has higher reabsorption loss and therefore, the higher Stark sub-level within H-3(6) ground state manifold has a lower laser threshold and longer laser wavelength.
