Abstract:Species of the genus Codonopsis (Campanulaceae) have a long history of application, acclaimed for its edible and therapeutic attributes. Scholarly inquiries into Codonopsis span botany, phytochemistry, quality assurance, pharmacodynamics, and toxicity, revealing a rich and comprehensive body of knowledge. This study synthesizes information from esteemed scientific databases like SciFinder, PubMed, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, and Chinese herbal classics to create a thorough scientific conceptual and theoretical framework for Codonopsis research. In this article, the phytochemical composition includes saccharides, polyacetylenes, polyenes, flavonoids, alkaloids, lignans, terpenoids, and organic acids was summarized. To date, over 350 monomeric compounds have been isolated and identified from Codonopsis , with recent studies primarily focusing on polysaccharides, aromatic derivatives, lignans, and polyacetylenes. Codonopsis exhibits broad pharmacological activities across various systems, including immune, blood, cardiovascular, central nervous, and digestive systems, with no significant toxicity or adverse effects reported. The existing research, focusing on various extracts and active parts without identifying specific active molecules, complicates the understanding of the mechanisms of action. There is an urgent need to advance research on the chemical composition and pharmacological effects to fully elucidate its pharmacodynamic properties and the basis of its material composition. Such efforts are crucial for the rational development, utilization, and clinical application of this herb.

Abstract:Ethnopharmacological relevance: Bufo gargarizans (Cantor, 1842) (BGC), a traditional medicinal animal distributed in many provinces of China, is well known for the pharmaceutical value of Chansu and Chanpi. As traditional Chinese medicines (TCMs), Chansu and Chanpi, with their broad-spectrum of therapeutic applications, have long been applied to detoxification, anti-inflammation, analgesia, etc. OVERARCHING OBJECTIVE: We critically analyzed the current evidence for the traditional uses, chemical profiles, pharmacological activity, toxicity and quality control of BGC (Bufonidae family) to provide a scientific basis for future in-depth studies and perspectives for the discovery of potential drug candidates. Methodology: All of the available information on active constituents and TCMs derived from BGC was obtained using the keywords "Bufo gargarizans", "Chansu", "Chanpi", "Huachansu", or "Cinobufacini" through different electronic databases, including PubMed, Web of Science, Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), the Wanfang Database, and Pharmacopoeia of China. In addition, Chinese medicine books from different times were used to elucidate the traditional uses of BGC. Electronic databases, including the "IUCN Red List of Threatened Species", "American Museum of Natural History" and "AmphibiaWeb Species Lists", were used to validate the scientific name of BGC. Results: To date, about 118 bufadienolide monomers and 11 indole alkaloids have been identified from BGC in total. The extracts and isolated compounds exhibit a wide range of in vitro and in vivo pharmacological effects. The literature search demonstrated that the ethnomedicinal uses of BGC, such as detoxification, anti-inflammation and the ability to reduce swelling and pain associated with infections, are correlated with its modern pharmacological activities, including antitumor, immunomodulation and attenuation of cancer-derived pain. Bufadienolides and indole alkaloids have been regarded as the main active substances in BGC, among which bufadienolides have significant antitumor activity. Furthermore, the cardiotoxicity of bufadienolides was discussed, and the main molecular mechanism involves in the inhibition of Na+/K+-ATPase. Besides, with the development of modern analytical techniques, the quality control methods of BGC-derived TCMs are being improved constantly. Conclusions: An increasing number of reports suggest that BGC can be regarded as an excellent source for exploring the potential antitumor constituents. However, the future antitumor research of BGC needs to follow the standard pharmacology guidelines, so as to provide comprehensive pharmacological information and aid the reproducibility of the data. Besides, to ensure the efficacy and safety of BGC-derived TCMs, it is vital to construct a comprehensive quality evaluation model on the basis of clarifying pharmacodynamic-related and toxicity-related compositions.

Abstract:Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer is a valuable plant in the Araliaceae family, which has been used in clinical practices for over 2000 years and recorded in a series of literatures for the treatment of all deficiency syndromes. Recently, the safety and efficacies of ginseng as drug or dietary supplement against multiple diseases were studied in ongoing and completed ginseng clinical trials. Different active components in ginseng including ginsenosides, polyacetylenes, and polysaccharides for different functions were identified and studied. Importantly, the pharmaceutical application of ginseng for memory, energy, stress, antioxidation, and immune system were extensively studied. Current findings for traditional uses, medicinal properties, phytochemistry, and pharmaceutical applications of ginseng are summarized.

Abstract:Guan XinⅡdecoction (Guan Xin Er Hao), made up of a range of herbal elements including Radix Salviae Miltiorrhizae, Radix Paeoniae Rubrae, Rhizoma Chuan-xiong, Flos Carthami, and Lignum Dalbergiae Odorafera, is a popular traditional Chinese medicine. As a result of these research activities errors in species identification were spotted, new drug resources were revealed, new taxa were discovered, crude drugs were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively, optimal conditions for cultivation and breeding of plants and animals used as drugs were formulated, the quality of some drugs was controlled, the drug processing procedures and storage conditions were evaluated, and the chemistry and pharmacology of a number of crude drugs were elucidated.

Abstract:The genus Polygonum encompasses approximately 300 species widely distributed around the world, among which 120 Polygonum species grow in China. Among the rich species, 81 of them are widely used in traditional Chinese and folk medicines. In recent years, several studies have found that the genus Polygonum posseses a variety of biological activities including antioxidation, antimicrobial, antitumor, anti-obesity, etc. However, there are still not enough systemic data on the chemical constituents and their pharmacological effects; hence, it would be useful to review current literature for available pharmacological activites of the genus and as well as its active ingredients. Both in-vitro and in-vivo studies have provided strong evidence for the therapeutic potential of the genus Polygonum. This review collates and examines information on the pharmacological effects of the genus Polygonum as well as its chemical constituents.

Abstract:Ginseng (Panax ginseng C. A. Meyer) is known as a valuable traditional Chinese herb for tens of centuries. Previous pharmacological and phytochemical investigations indicate that polysaccharides are a main biologically active ginseng component that possesses different bioactivities such as antitumor, immunoregulation, antioxidation, hepatoprotection, and anti-inflammation. Work is needed to summarize the full aspects of these polysaccharides systematically to boost their further investigation and application. In this review, studies on the extraction, purification, characterization, and bioactivity are introduced in detail. Moreover, the structure–bioactivity relationship of ginseng polysaccharides is explored and discussed. The uronic acids richer in ginseng polysaccharides tend to have higher biological effect, and the α-(1→4)-GalpA and α-(1→4)-Galp in the main chain are essential for the anti-inflammatory and antiviral effects. We believe our work proposes a helpful bibliography for further innovation and promotes these natural products in functional food.

Abstract:Glycopeptides of traditional Chinese medicine(GTCM), as a type of natural products with important biological activities, have received increasing attention in recent years. These substances have a variety of pharmacological effects, including anti-tumor, immunomodulatory, neuroprotective, and anti-inflammatory effects. The extraction and separation processes directly affect the yield and purity of GTCM, and structural characterization is essential for probing into the properties and pharmacological mechanisms of glycopeptides. This article reviews the research progress and prospects the research directions in the extraction, separation, structural identification, and pharmacological effects of GTCM. Despite the progress in the research on GTCM, challenges such as low extraction efficiency, long separation cycles, difficult structural characterization, and complex mechanisms still exist. To address these issues, efforts should be made to optimize the extraction methods, explore new separation technologies, and develop efficient structural characte-rization methods. Additionally, the future work should decipher the pharmacological mechanisms of GTCM, which will provide a scientific basis for the drug development and clinical applications of GTCM.

Abstract:ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Panax notoginseng (Burk.) F. H. Chen, also called Sanqi, is a widely used traditional Chinese medicine, which has long history used as herbal medicines. It is currently an important medicinal material in China, holding the first place in the sale volume of the whole patent medicines market in China, and the market size of the single species has exceeded 10 billion yuan. In addition, P. notoginseng is an important constituent part of many famous Chinese patent medicines, such as Compound Danshen Dripping Pills and Yunnan Baiyao. P. notoginseng saponins (PNSs), which are the major active components of P. notoginseng, are a kind of chemical mixture containing different dammarane-type saponins. Many studies show that PNSs have been extensively used in medical research or applications, such as atherosclerosis, diabetes, acute lung injury, cancer, and cardiovascular diseases. In addition, various PNS preparations, such as injections and capsules, have been made commercially available and are widely applied in clinical practice.AIM OF THE REVIEW: Since the safety and efficacy of compounds are related to their qualitative and quantitative analyses, this review briefly summarizes the analytic approaches for PNSs and their biological effects developed in the last decade.METHODOLOGY: This review conducted a systematic search in electronic databases, such as Pubmed, Google Scholar, SciFinder, ISI Web of Science, and CNKI, since 2009. The information provided in this review is based on peer-reviewed papers and patents in either English or Chinese.RESULTS: At present, the chromatographic technique remains the most extensively used approach for the identification or quantitation of PNSs, coupled with different detectors, among which the difference mainly lies in their sensitivity and specificity for analyzing various compounds. It is well-known that PNSs have traditionally strong activity on cardiovascular diseases, such as atherosclerosis, intracerebral hemorrhage, or brain injury. The recent studies showed that PNSs also responded to osteoporosis, cancers, diabetes, and drug toxicity. However, some other studies also showed that some PNSs injections and special PNS components might lead to some biological toxicity under certain dosages.CONCLUSION: This review may be used as a basis for further research in the field of quantitative and qualitative analyses, and is expected to provide updated and valuable insights into the potential medicinal applications of PNSs.

The rhizome of Gastrodia elata Blume - An ethnopharmacological review

Abstract:Ethnopharmacological relevance: Gastrodia elata Blume (Orchidaceae) is commonly called Tian ma in Chinese and mainly distributed in the mountainous areas of eastern Asia, such as China, Korea, Japan and India. It is an extensively used traditional Chinese herbal medicine in the clinical practice of traditional Chinese medicine, to treat headache, migraine, dizziness, epilepsy, infantile convulsion, tetany and so on. The present paper reviews the advancements in investigation of botany and ethnopharmacology, phytochemistry, pharmacology, toxicology and quality control of Gastrodia elata Blume. Finally, the possible tendency and perspective for future investigation of this plant are also put forward. Materials and methods: The information on Gastrodia elata Blume was collected via piles of resources including classic books about Chinese herbal medicine, and scientific databases including Pubmed, Google Scholar, ACS, Web of science, ScienceDirect databases, CNKI and others. Plant taxonomy was validated by the databases "The Plant List", and "Mansfeld's Encyclopedia". Results: Over 81 compounds from this plant have been isolated and identified, phenolics and polysaccharides are generally considered as the characteristic and active constituents of Gastrodia elata Blume. Its active compounds possess wide-reaching biological activities, including sedative, hypnotic, antiepileptic, anticonvulsive, antianxietic, antidepressant, neuroprotective, antipsychotic, anti-vertigo, circulatory system modulating, anti-inflammationary, analgesic, antioxidative, memory-improving and antiaging, antivirus and antitumor effects. Conclusion: Despite the publication of various papers on Gastrodia elata Blume, there is still, however, the need for definitive research and clarification of other bioactive compounds using bioactivity-guided isolation strategies, and the possible mechanism of action as well as potential synergistic or antagonistic effects of multi-component mixtures derived from Gastrodia elata Blume need to be evaluated. It is also necessary and important to do more quality control and toxicological study on human subjects in order to maintain its efficacy stable in the body and validate its safety in clinical uses. In addition, more investigations on other parts of this plant beyond the tubers are needed. Further studies on Gastrodia elata Blume will lead to the development of new drugs and therapeutics for various diseases, and how to utilize it better should be paid more attention to.

Abstract:Ethnopharmacologic relevance: Chuanxiong Rhizoma (CX) is the dried root rhizomes of the plant Ligusticum chuanxiong Hort. of the family Umbelliferae. CX is listed as a superior herb in the book "Shennong Bencao Jing". It has a pungent and warm nature and belongs to the liver, gallbladder, and pericardium meridians. CX is documented in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia from 1963 to 2020 editions. CX as a well-known traditional Chinese medicine for promoting blood circulation, regulating qi, dispelling wind, and relieving pain, has been proven to contain a variety of bioactive compounds with diverse pharmacological activities and medicinal value. Aim of the study: The current review aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of the botany, traditional uses, phytochemistry, pharmacology, toxicity, quality control and pharmacokinetics of CX. Materials and methods: The relevant information of CX was obtained from several databases including Web of Science, PubMed, ACS Publications, Google Scholar, Baidu Scholar, CNKI, Ph.D, MSc dissertations, as well as The Catalogue of Life, Flora of China database, and The Global Biodiversity Information Facility. Results: CX is widely used in traditional medicine for treating various diseases related to the cardiovascular system, liver and kidney system, nervous system, respiratory system, and more. Over 400 compounds have been identified in CX, including phthalides, alkaloids, organic acids and its esters, polyphenols, terpenes and their derivatives, polysaccharides, hydrocarbons and their derivatives, coumarins, lignans and others. The plant extracts, compounds and Chinese patent medicines possess various pharmacological activities, including cardiovascular system protection, nervous system protection, cerebrovascular system protection, anti-inflammatory, liver and lung protection, anti-diabetes, anti-osteoporosis, anti-bacterial, anti-aging, anti-oxidant, immune regulation, prevention of DNA damage, prevention of postoperative peritoneal adhesion. Conclusion: Considering its traditional and modern applications, phytochemical composition, and pharmacological properties, CX can be regarded as a traditional Chinese medicine resource for treating various diseases related to the cardiovascular, hepatorenal, nervous, and respiratory systems. Current research mainly focuses on cell and animal experiments, where some active ingredients exhibit diverse pharmacological activities. However, further studies are needed to fully understand its specific mechanisms of action. In addition, there are multiple active ingredients in CX, but current research mainly focuses on the pharmacological effects of individual components, with little research on the interactions and synergistic effects between different components. It is recommended to strengthen the research on the interactions of CX compounds and their components to reveal the overall pharmacological mechanisms. This will contribute to quality control, new drug development, commercialization, and promote its continuous development in the field of medicine.
