Abstract:In order to overcome problems of Au-Cu bimetallic catalysts for acetylene hydrochlorination reaction such as instability, Au-Cu-SH/AC catalysts were prepared through the introduction of thiol and tested to examine their activity and stability. It was found that performances of Au-Cu-SH/AC catalysts were quite excellent, with significantly higher catalytic activity and better stability than performances of Au/AC and Au-Cu/AC catalysts. The contents of Cu and thiol additives were also optimized and the optimum molar ratio of Au/Cu/SH was 1 : 1 : 10. Catalyst samples were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), nitrogen adsorption/desorption (BET), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electronic microscopy (TEM), H-2 temperature-programmed reduction (H-2-TPR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). It was demonstrated that the Au-Cu-SH/AC catalysts were Au-0-based catalysts, due to thiol reducing Au3+ to Au-0 species during the preparation process. Au-0 species exhibited better catalytic activity than Au3+ species for acetylene hydrochlorination, according to the comparison with the composition of active species in different samples through XPS. Furthermore, the sulfhydryl of thiol could bond to the surface of gold nanoparticles (Au NPs). It helped in mitigating the oxidation of Au-0 by HCl, protecting Au NPs from structure damage, stabilizing Au NPs in a nearly constant particle size and keeping a more active structure in the reaction environment. Thus, improved dispersity of active species and protection of the active structure of the Au NPs resulted in the better catalytic activity and stability of Au-Cu-SH/AC.

Abstract:An allenylidene Au(i) catalyst based on triazolylidene moieties, featuring the high sigma-donating ability (comparable to that of other NHC ligands) and largely enhanced pi-accepting ability of its ligand, was developed for the first time. As compared with the extant gold complexes such as IPrAuCl, Ph3PAuCl and (PhO)(3)PAuCl, these allenylidene Au(i) catalysts exhibited superior catalytic activities in the gold-catalyzed Nazarov reaction of aryl enones.

Abstract:We have developed a new series of single-component air- and moisture-stable catalysts for alkyne polymerization based on chloro-nickel and chloro-cobalt complexes containing phosphine ligands. The polymerization of p-diethynylbenzene initiated by these complexes proceeds smoothly in the presence of amines at room temperature to afford soluble π-conjugated polymers in yields as high as 81% with weight-average molecular weight up to 17 600.

Abstract:The catalytic activity of a series of nickel acetylides and chlorides containing different phosphine and alkynyl ligands: NiL2(CCR)2; NiL2(CCR)Cl and NiL2Cl2 (L2=(PPh3)2, (PBu3)2 and Ph2PCH2CH2PPh2; R=p-C6H4CCH, C6H5, H, CH2OH and CH2OCOCH3), towards p-diethynylbenzene polymerization is compared. The catalytic property of these acetylides is related to chlorine, phosphines and alkynyl ligands bonded to the metal atoms. The polarity, steric hindrance and electron-donating ability of ligands are main factors influencing the catalytic activity of these complexes. Nickel acetylides were found to be novel efficient initiating systems for the alkyne polymerization. The polymerization proceeds under mild conditions to give soluble π-conjugated polymers with weight average molecular weights as high as 4.8×104 in yields as high as 95%.

Abstract:A new mesoporous silica SBA-15-immobilized triphenylphosphine-gold(I) complex [Ph3P-SBA-15-AuNTf2] was synthesized via the addition of (2-(diphenylphosphino)phenyl)methanamine to triethoxy(3-isocyanatopropyl)silane, followed by immobilization onto SBA-15 and then the reaction with Me2SAuCl and AgNTf2, respectively, and was characterized by different physico-chemical techniques. In the presence of 5 mol% of Ph3P-SBA-15-AuNTf2 and 20 mol% of 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy) as a ligand, the C(sp2)-C(sp) cross-coupling reaction of aryldiazonium tetrafluoroborates and terminal alkynes proceeded smoothly in acetonitrile at room temperature without an external oxidant to deliver diverse arylalkynes in good to excellent yields with wide tolerance of functional groups, including aryl iodide or bromide incompatible with classical cross-coupling. The new supported gold(I) complex could be readily recovered by centrifugation of reaction solution and reused more than ten cycles without any significant decrease in its catalytic activity.

Abstract:We report the synthesis of a poly(1-chloro-2-phenylacetylene) derivative with an electron-withdrawing substituent on the phenyl group. A combination of an N-heterocyclic carbene-based Pd catalyst (NHC-Pd) with silver trifluoromethyl sulfonate (AgOTf) formed an active catalytic system for the polymerization of 1-chloro-2-(para-substituted)-phenylacetylenes. Based on this active catalytic system, functional poly(di-substituted acetylene) (PDSA) bearing an aldehyde group (P3) was obtained in high yield. The exceptional P3 bearing a reactive aldehyde group on its side chain was used as a precursor to be subsequently modified with amines to generate a novel PDSA (P3-ppm) possessing Schiff-base functionalities in good yield.

Abstract:Four dicationic palladium and platinum ethylene complexes of the type [M(PNP)(C2H4)]X2 (M = Pd, Pt; X = BF4, SbF6, PNP = 2,6‐bis(diphenylphosphinomethyl)pyridine) were studied as pre‐catalysts for the intermolecular hydroarylation of acetylene under acid‐free conditions. The palladium complex [Pd(PNP)(C2H4)](SbF6)2 was found to be the most active catalyst for the addition of pentamethylbenzene to acetylene at room temperature. In a 31P NMR spectroscopic study the impact of the counter anion on the rate determining step was demonstrated. Various reaction parameters were screened to optimize the catalytic efficiency. The presence of small amounts of water are beneficial and increased the reaction rate. Water acts as co‐catalyst assisting in proton transfer during the catalytic reaction. After optimization of the reaction conditions, a benchmark for the palladium(II) catalyzed hydroarylation of acetylene was achieved with TON 200 at room temperature in 24 h under acid‐free conditions. However, this catalytic system has a very limited substrate scope.

Abstract:Fluorinated JohnPhos-type ligands are proposed as accelerating tools in homogeneous gold(I) catalysis, with PedroPhosAuCl (Cat1) as the most efficient one. The ligands as well as the corresponding gold complexes were synthesized in high yields and fully characterized also via single-crystal X-ray diffraction. A secondary interaction between the distal phenyl ring of the phosphane ligand and the metal center is identified as key for the fine-tuning of the overall catalytic performance of the complexes. In particular, kinetic as well as computational analysis revealed that by accommodating F atoms on the biphenyl pendant of the ligand, more reactive organo-gold intermediates are realized toward subsequent nucleophilic condensations. The gold-catalyzed indole-hydroarylation of 1,6-enynes and the intramolecular hydroindolynation of alkynes have been adopted as benchmark reactions to exemplify these accelerating effects.

Abstract:We report the synthesis of a new palladium complex (1a) bearing two different P-donors, di(1-adamantyl)phosphinous acid and triphenylphosphine. A heteroleptic complex with a phosphinous acid ligand has rarely been reported. With phenyl bromide and di-p-tolylphosphine oxide as reagents, PPh3-stabilised 1a was proved to be a noteworthy Pd(II) precatalyst for carbon-phosphorus bond formation. 1a-catalysed Hirao coupling could be efficiently made in environmentally benign ethanol. Reacting for 10 to 120 minutes, aryl bromides equipped with electron-donating or electron-withdrawing groups were successfully catalysed. Nucleophile-sensitive 2-bromopyridine, 2-bromothiophene, and 4-bromobenzonitrile were applicable in toluene/ethylene glycol (EG) (9/1). 1a-catalyzed Hirao coupling was successfully applied to the synthesis of a host material in an organic light-emitting diode (OLED) and precursor of biarylphosphines. A mechanistic study regarding how plausible Pd(0) active species are generated was jointly investigated by means of DFT calculation, ESI mass spectroscopy, and experiment. Interestingly, we demonstrated a proof of concept that bulky di(1-adamantyl)phosphine oxide is a useful preligand and less bulky di-p-tolylphosphine oxide is the substrate in the Hirao coupling.

Abstract:In this article, the structurally well-defined dinuclear complex copper(I) acetate was studied in detail and was developed as a highly practical and efficient catalyst for the copper(I)-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition. The "bare" phenylethynylcopper(I) (i.e., with no exogeneous ligands) was isolated as an intermediate, which can be converted into an active catalytic species by treatment with acetic acid (in situ produced in the reaction) to efficiently catalyze the azide-alkyne cycloaddition under mild conditions.

Abstract:Pentaphenylferrocenyl di-tert-butylphosphine has been prepared in high yield from a two-step synthetic procedure, and the scope of various cross-coupling processes catalyzed by complexes bearing this ligand has been investigated. This ligand creates a remarkably general palladium catalyst for aryl halide amination and for Suzuki coupling. Turnovers of roughly 1000 were observed for aminations with unactivated aryl bromides or chlorides. In addition, complexes of this ligand catalyzed the formation of selected aryl ethers under mild conditions. The reactions encompassed electron-rich and electron-poor aryl bromides and chlorides. In the presence of catalysts containing this ligand, these aryl halides coupled with acyclic or cyclic secondary alkyl- and arylamines, with primary alkyl- and arylamines, and with aryl- and primary alkylboronic acids. These last couplings provide the first general procedure for reaction of terminal alkylboronic acids with aryl halides without toxic or expensive bases. The ligand not only generates highly active palladium catalysts, but it is air stable in solution and in the solid state. Palladium(0) complexes of this ligand are also air stable as a solid and react only slowly with oxygen in solution.

Abstract:series of (1,2-diaryl)alkenylphosphine palladium complexes have been designed and synthesized. The structures of palladium complexes depend on the ratio of amount of using PdCl2(CH3CH)(2) and ligands. Additions of one equivalent of ligands afford dipalladium complexes [(RCH)-C-1=CR2(PR2)PdCl2](2), R-1 = R-2 = R = Ph, (C1); R-1 = R-2 = p-tolyl, R = Ph, (C2); R-1 = R-2 = Ph, R = Pr-i, (C3). The dipalladium complexes (C1-C3) adopt a transoid conformation and existed as chlorine-bridged dimer with a single alkenylphosphine ligand at each Pd. Complex Cl is confirmed by X-ray crystallography. Additions of two equivalents of ligands afford monopalladium complexes {[(RCH)-C-1=CR2(PR2)](2)PdCl2}, R-1 = R-2 = R = Ph, (C4); R-1 = R-2 = p-tolyl, R = Ph, (C5); R-1 = R-2 = Ph, R = Pr-i, (C6). The monopalladium complexes (C4-C6) adopt a transoid conformation with two alkenylphosphines. Complex C4 and C5 were confirmed by X-ray crystallography, respectively. For a crystal structure of complex C4, there are two independent palladium complexes in the asymmetric unit. All the complexes as a catalyst show good catalytic activity in Suzuki-Miyaura reaction. Abstract:Robust acenaphthoimidazolylidene palladium complexes have been demonstrated as highly efficient and general catalysts for the sterically hindered Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reactions in excellent yields even with low catalyst loadings under mild reaction conditions. The high catalytic activity of these complexes highlights that, besides the "flexible steric bulky" concept, σ-donor properties of the NHC ligands are also crucial to accelerate the transformations.

Abstract:Cyclometalated N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-NTs-AuCl2 complexes of type [(NHC)Au(N)Cl2] are presented as a stable precatalyst, easily activated in situ by an acid (HX) for cationic [(NHC)AuCl2]X catalysis. The “ethyl-and propyl-tosylamide arm” tethered NHC-Au(III)Cl3 complexes can be smoothly converted to cyclometalated (-HCl) analogues by K2CO3 treatment, and, via the addition of a stoichiometric amount of Brønsted acid (HX), can be further converted to [NHC-Au(III)Cl2]X carrying various counteranions (X = CCl3CO2 –, CF3CO2 –, MsO–, TsO–, BF4 –, TfO–, and Tf2N–). We studied this concept in catalysis using the cycloisomerization of 2-alkynylphenol to benzofurans as a probe reaction. Excellent yields were obtained in 2 h with an equimolar 1 mol % loading of the Mes-NHC-propyl-NTs-AuCl2 precatalyst and MsOH as the acid additive under ambient conditions in CHCl3. The single crystal structure for a cyclometalated NHCAu(III)-complex was characterized by X-ray analysis. 1H NMR monitoring of reaction kinetics suggests that the in situ formed Au(III) complex is the catalytically active species.

These practical aryl-palladium-NHC complexes have shown highly efficient catalyzed carbonylation and Sonogashira carbonylation reactions, with high turnover number in synthesis of α-keto amides (TON = 4300) and in synthesis of alkynones (TON = 980).
CCC–NHC Au(III) Pincer Complexes as a Reliable Platform for Isolating Elusive Species

Abstract:The reactivity of unprecedented CCC–NHC Au(III) pincer complexes has been investigated, employing a novel methodology for their preparation. Notably, this marks the inaugural case of CCC–NHC Au(III) pincer complexes with a central aryl moiety where the two arms of the pincer ligand consist of N–heterocyclic carbenes (NHC). The stability conferred by the CCC–NHC ligand facilitated the isolation of elusive Au(III) species, encompassing Au(III)–formate, Au(III)–F, Au(III)–Me, and Au(III)–alkynyl. Our study also unveiled the elusive Au(III)–H species, offering valuable insights into its formation, stability, and reactivity. While the CCC–NHC Au(III)–H complex remains stable at room temperature, its decomposition becomes conspicuous at elevated temperatures (>60°C), exhibiting a more pronounced tendency under acidic conditions compared to basic ones. Through comprehensive experiments, we indirectly demonstrated the potential of Au(III)–formate to undergo β–hydride elimination, becoming a key step in the dehydrogenation of formic acid. Theoretical calculations revealed variations in the reactivity of Au(III)–H species towards sodium hydride and formic acid, highlighting a link between σ–donation from the pincer ligand and reaction energetics. Pincers with lower electron donation favored the reaction with sodium hydride but impeded the reaction with formic acid, whereas those with higher electron donation exhibited the opposite behavior. Additionally, the CCC–NHC Au(III) pincer complex exhibited Lewis acid behavior, catalyzing the synthesis of phenols. In summary, the CCC–NHC Au(III) pincer complex emerges as a versatile platform for isolating reactive species and unraveling elementary catalytic steps.
