Abstract:A robust 4-channel WDM optical phase modulated 60GHz wireless fiber system is proposed and simulated. In this system, a Fabry-Perot (FP) frequency interleaver is designated to suppress optical carriers for 60GHz signal generation. The simulation results show that this phase modulated WDM system is not susceptible to crosstalk.

Abstract:Sub-terahertz (sub-THz) communications have promising prospects for future beyond-5G or 6G applications due to the sufficient spectrum resources. However, the bit-error-rate (BER) performance of sub-THz is seriously deteriorated by phase noise because of the defective high-frequency oscillators. In this paper, a novel modulation and demodulation method with low peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) is proposed to resist phase noise, where the signal waveform is generated in the form of Gray-mapping amplitude and differential phase shift keying (Gray-ADPSK). As phase noise varies slowly in time, the amplitude and differential phase between adjacent symbols almost remain after transmission with Gray-ADPSK, and hence the BER performance is barely affected by phase noise. In order to support decoding effectively, a soft-decision demodulation method with low complexity is also put forward. Numerical simulations demonstrate that the proposed Gray-ADPSK can resist phase noise significantly, and the high-spectral-efficiency transmission even in the order of 4096 is feasible under high-intensity phase noise.

Abstract:In this paper, as an attractive alternative to the conventional discrete Fourier transform (DFT) based orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), discrete cosine transform (DCT) based OFDM which has certain advantages over its counterpart is studied for optical fiber communications. As is known, laser phase noise is a major impairment to the performance of coherent optical OFDM (CO-OFDM) systems. However, to our knowledge, detailed analysis of phase noise and the corresponding mitigation methods for DCT-based CO-OFDM systems have not been reported yet. To address these issues, we analyze the laser phase noise in the DCT-based CO-OFDM systems, and propose phase noise estimation and mitigation schemes. Numerical results show that the proposal is very effective in suppressing phase noise and could significantly improve the performance of DCT-based CO-OFDM systems.

Abstract:A unified framework for phase noise suppression is proposed in this paper, which could be applied in any coherent optical block transmission systems, including coherent optical orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (CO-OFDM), coherent optical single-carrier frequency-domain equalization block transmission (CO-SCFDE), etc. Based on adaptive modeling of phase noise, unified observation equations for different coherent optical block transmission systems are constructed, which lead to unified phase noise estimation and suppression. Abstract:Digital coherent Nyquist wavelength division multiplexed passive optical network (Nyquist-WDM-PON), which guarantees very high spectrum efficiency by Nyquist pulse shaping, is a strong candidate for future access PONs. In order to match the low-cost target, the cheap large-linewidth lasers are chosen as the optical source in NG-PON2. However, the induced phase noise by the lasers can seriously cut down the system performance. In this letter, we propose a sliding window aided method to suppress the effect caused by phase noise and introduce it into a typical coherent Nyquist-WDM-PON. With the help of our proposed method, the demand for laser linewidth can be reduced significantly, which justifies the extensive application of cost-effective coherent Nyquist-WDM-PON in the future.

Abstract:Previous studies have revealed the similarity between phase noise in the symbol domain of discrete Fourier transform spread (DFT-Spread) coherent orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (CO-OFDM) systems and that in the time domain. This paper further details this characteristic through both formulas and simulation results, while also analyzing and summarizing its formation conditions and influencing factors. Based on this, a phase noise compensation (PNC) scheme based on DFT-Spread OFDM is proposed for high-order quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) transmission with large fast Fourier transform (FFT) sizes. The proposed scheme effectively suppresses inter-carrier interference (ICI) introduced by phase noise in OFDM systems, as verified through simulations of dual-polarization (DP) 64-QAM CO-OFDM transmission over 80 km single-mode fiber (SMF). This work suggests that proposed PNC scheme enhance the tolerance for laser linewidth in OFDM systems, and may offer a possible solution for short distance high-baud-rate high-order QAM coherent transmission.

Abstract:In the future super dense wireless networks, millimeter-wave (mmWave) communications systems have great prospects, mainly due to the huge bandwidths and the directional transmissions. However, phase noise is significant due to the high oscillation frequency, which affects channel estimation and deteriorates the bit-error-rate (BER) performance. This paper emphasizes that phase noise may be estimated in the frequency domain, and a scheme with iterative channel estimation and phase noise compensation is proposed for single-carrier frequency-domain equalization (SC-FDE) based mmWave systems. We achieve channel estimation by calculating small perturbations iteratively with the first-order approximation. For signal demodulation, we adopt an iterative receiver to compensate phase noise with the decision feedback result. Comprehensive simulations demonstrate that our scheme achieves competitive performance and outperforms the traditional methods, in terms of both mean square error (MSE) in channel estimation and BER in signal demodulation.

Abstract:In this paper, we briefly review high spectral efficiency optical superchannel transmission with Nyquist pulse shaping. Afterwards we present the principle of coherent optical Nyquist single carrier (SC) systems with frequency domain channel estimation and time domain equalization (FDTDE) with nonlinear compensation scheme coordinated. With this technique, Terabit polarization division multiplexed (PDM) 32 quadrature-amplitude modulation (QAM) superchannel with Nyquist pulse shaping is generated and transmitted experimentally.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the phase noise elimination employing an optical pilot carrier in the high speed coherent transmission system considering the equalization enhanced phase noise (EEPN). The numerical simulations are performed in a 28-Gsymbol/s quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) coherent system with a polarization multiplexed pilot carrier. The carrier phase estimation is implemented by the one-tap normalized least mean square (NLMS) filter and the differential phase detection, respectively. Simulation results demonstrate that the application of the optical pilot carrier is very effective for the intrinsic laser phase noise cancellation, while is less efficient for the EEPN mitigation.

Abstract:We present a novel investigation on the enhancement of phase noise in coherent optical transmission system due to electronic chromatic dispersion compensation. Two types of equalizers, including a time domain fiber dispersion finite impulse response (FD-FIR) filter and a frequency domain blind look-up (BLU) filter are applied to mitigate the chromatic dispersion in a 112-Gbit/s polarization division multiplexed quadrature phase shift keying (PDM-QPSK) transmission system. The bit-error-rate (BER) floor in phase estimation using an optimized one-tap normalized least-mean-square (NLMS) filter, and considering the equalization enhanced phase noise (EEPN) is evaluated analytically including the correlation effects. The numerical simulations are implemented and compared with the performance of differential QPSK demodulation system.

Abstract:Long-haul optical fiber communication employing digital signal processing (DSP)-based dispersion compensation can be distorted by the phenomenon of equalization-enhanced phase noise (EEPN), due to the reciprocities between the dispersion compensation unit and the local oscillator (LO) laser phase noise (LPN). The impact of EEPN scales increases with the increase of the fiber dispersion, laser linewidths, symbol rates, signal bandwidths, and the order of modulation formats. In this work, the phase noise cancellation (PNC) employing a radio frequency (RF) pilot tone in coherent optical transmission systems has been investigated. A 28-Gsym/s QPSK optical transmission system with a significant EEPN has been implemented, where the carrier phase recovery (CPR) was realized using the one-tap normalized least-mean-square (NLMS) estimation and the differential phase detection (DPD), respectively. It is shown that the RF pilot tone can entirely eliminate the LPN and efficiently suppress the EEPN when it is applied prior to the CPR.

Abstract:In order to further improve the laser phase noise tolerance of coherent optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (CO-OFDM) systems, an iterative phase noise suppression algorithm is proposed in this paper, which is powerful in mitigating the laser phase noise induced intercarrier interference (ICI) even when laser linewidth achieves 2 MHz. Compared with the existing ICI suppression method, the performance gain brought by the proposal is significant when the laser linewidth is larger than 1.5 MHz. The BER floor which can not be avoided by using the existing phase noise suppression methods can be reduced effectively by employing the new iterative algorithm.

Abstract:Compared with high spectrum efficiency faster-than-Nyquist (FTN) backbone network, an enhanced carrier phase recovery based on dual pilot tones is more sensitive to capital cost in FTN metropolitan areas as well as inter-datacenter optical networks. The use of distributed feedback (DFB) lasers is a way to effectively reduce the cost. However, under high symbol rate FTN systems, equalization-enhanced phase noise (EEPN) induced by a DFB laser with large linewidth will significantly deteriorate the system performance. What is worse, in FTN systems, tight filtering introduces inter-symbol interference so severe that the carrier phase estimation (CPE) algorithm of the FTN systems is more sensitive to EEPN, thus it will lead to a more serious cycle slip problem. In this paper, an enhanced carrier phase recovery based on dual pilot tones is proposed to mitigate EEPN and suppress cycle slip, in which the chromatic dispersion (CD)-aware Tx and LO laser phase noise is estimated, respectively. Offline experiments results under 40 Gbaud polarization multiplexing (PM) 16-quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) FTN wavelength division multiplexing (FTN-WDM) systems at 0.9 acceleration factor, 5 MHz laser linewidth, and 500 km transmission demonstrate that the proposed algorithm could bring about 0.65 dB improvement of the required SNR for the normalized generalized mutual information of 0.9 compared with the training sequence-based cycle slip suppression carrier phase estimation (TS-CSS) algorithm.

Abstract:Superchannel transmission spaced at the symbol rate, known as Nyquist spacing, has been demonstrated for effectively maximizing the optical communication channel capacity and spectral efficiency. However, the achievable capacity and reach of transmission systems using advanced modulation formats are affected by fibre nonlinearities and equalization enhanced phase noise (EEPN). Fibre nonlinearities can be effectively compensated using digital back-propagation (DBP). However EEPN which arises from the interaction between laser phase noise and dispersion cannot be efficiently mitigated, and can significantly degrade the performance of transmission systems. Here we report the first investigation of the origin and the impact of EEPN in Nyquist-spaced superchannel system, employing electronic dispersion compensation (EDC) and multi-channel DBP (MC-DBP). Analysis was carried out in a Nyquist-spaced 9-channel 32-Gbaud DP-64QAM transmission system. Results confirm that EEPN significantly degrades the performance of all sub-channels of the superchannel system and that the distortions are more severe for the outer sub-channels, both using EDC and MC-DBP. It is also found that the origin of EEPN depends on the relative position between the carrier phase recovery module and the EDC (or MC-DBP) module. Considering EEPN, diverse coding techniques and modulation formats have to be applied for optimizing different sub-channels in superchannel systems.
