Abstract:We prove a stronger version of a termination theorem appeared in the paper "On existence of log minimal models II". We essentially just get rid of the redundant assumptions so the proof is almost the same as in there. However, we give a detailed proof here for future reference.

Abstract:We prove that the existence of log minimal models in dimension $d$ essentially implies the LMMP with scaling in dimension $d$. As a consequence we prove that a weak nonvanishing conjecture in dimension $d$ implies the minimal model conjecture in dimension $d$.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove that the log minimal model program in dimension $d-1$ implies the existence of log minimal models for effective lc pairs (eg of nonnegative Kodaira dimension) in dimension $d$. In fact, we prove that the same conclusion follows from a weaker assumption, namely, the log minimal model program with scaling in dimension $d-1$. This enables us to prove that effective lc pairs in dimension five have log minimal models. We also give new proofs of the existence of log minimal models for effective lc pairs in dimension four and the Shokurov reduction theorem. Other applications appear in a paper of Birkar-Paun.

Abstract:Following Shokurov's ideas, we give a short proof of the following klt version of his result: termination of terminal log flips in dimension d implies that any klt pair of dimension d has a log minimal model or a Mori fibre space. Thus, in particular, any klt pair of dimension 4 has a log minimal model or a Mori fibre space.

Abstract:We first introduce a weak type of Zariski decomposition in higher dimensions: an ${\mathbb {R}}$ -Cartier divisor has a weak Zariski decomposition if birationally and in a numerical sense it can be written as the sum of a nef and an effective ${\mathbb {R}}$ -Cartier divisor. We then prove that there is a very basic relation between Zariski decompositions and log minimal models which has long been expected: we prove that assuming the log minimal model program in dimension d − 1, a lc pair (X/Z, B) of dimension d has a log minimal model (in our sense) if and only if K X + B has a weak Zariski decomposition/Z.

Abstract:Given an NQC log canonical generalized pair whose underlying variety X is not necessarily -factorial, we show that one may run a -MMP with scaling of an ample divisor which terminates, provided that has a minimal model in a weaker sense or that is not pseudo-effective. We also prove the existence of minimal models of pseudo-effective NQC log canonical generalized pairs under various additional assumptions, for instance when the boundary contains an ample divisor.

Abstract:We generalize Miyanishi's theory of almost minimal models of log smooth surfaces with reduced boundary to the case of arbitrary log surfaces defined over an algebraically closed field. Given an MMP run of a log surface $(X,D)$ we define and construct its almost minimal model, whose underlying surface has singularities not worse than $X$ and which differs from a minimal model by a contraction of some curves supported in the boundary only. For boundaries of type $rD$, where $D$ is reduced and $r\in [0,1]\cap \mathbb{Q}$, we show that if $X$ is smooth or $r\in [0,\frac{1}{2}]$ then the construction respects $(1-r)$-divisorial log terminality and $(1-r)$-log canonicity. We show that the assumptions are optimal, too.

Abstract:We introduce a novel model-theoretic framework inspired from graph modification and based on the interplay between model theory and algorithmic graph minors. The core of our framework is a new compound logic operating with two types of sentences, expressing graph modification: the modulator sentence, defining some property of the modified part of the graph, and the target sentence, defining some property of the resulting graph. In our framework, modulator sentences are in counting monadic second-order logic (CMSOL) and have models of bounded treewidth, while target sentences express first-order logic (FOL) properties along with minor-exclusion. Our logic captures problems that are not definable in first-order logic and, moreover, may have instances of unbounded treewidth. Also, it permits the modeling of wide families of problems involving vertex/edge removals, alternative modulator measures (such as elimination distance or $\mathcal{G}$-treewidth), multistage modifications, and various cut problems. Our main result is that, for this compound logic, model-checking can be done in quadratic time. All derived algorithms are constructive and this, as a byproduct, extends the constructibility horizon of the algorithmic applications of the Graph Minors theorem of Robertson and Seymour. The proposed logic can be seen as a general framework to capitalize on the potential of the irrelevant vertex technique. It gives a way to deal with problem instances of unbounded treewidth, for which Courcelle's theorem does not apply. The proof of our meta-theorem combines novel combinatorial results related to the Flat Wall theorem along with elements of the proof of Courcelle's theorem and Gaifman's theorem. We finally prove extensions where the target property is expressible in FOL+DP, i.e., the enhancement of FOL with disjoint-paths predicates.

Abstract:For an abstract elementary class $\mathbf{K}$ and a cardinal $\lambda \geq LS(\mathbf{K})$, we prove under mild cardinal arithmetic assumptions, categoricity in two succesive cardinals, almost stability for $\lambda^+$-minimal types and continuity of splitting in $\lambda$, that stability in $\lambda$ is equivalent to the existence of a model in $\lambda^{++}$. The forward direction holds without any cardinal or categoricity assumptions, this result improves both [Vas18b, 12.1] and [MaYa24, 3.14]. Moreover, we prove a categoricity theorem for abstract elementary classes with weak amalgamation and tameness under mild structural assumptions in $\lambda$. A key feature of this result is that we do not assume amalgamation or arbitrarily large models.

Abstract:Minimal models of a Boolean formula play a pivotal role in various reasoning tasks. While previous research has primarily focused on qualitative analysis over minimal models; our study concentrates on the quantitative aspect, specifically counting of minimal models. Exact counting of minimal models is strictly harder than #P, prompting our investigation into establishing a lower bound for their quantity, which is often useful in related applications. In this paper, we introduce two novel techniques for counting minimal models, leveraging the expressive power of answer set programming: the first technique employs methods from knowledge compilation, while the second one draws on recent advancements in hashing-based approximate model counting. Through empirical evaluations, we demonstrate that our methods significantly improve the lower bound estimates of the number of minimal models, surpassing the performance of existing minimal model reasoning systems in terms of runtime.
