Abstract:Previous work of the author [39] showed that the Homomorphism Preservation Theorem of classical model theory remains valid when its statement is restricted to finite structures. In this paper, we give a new proof of this result via a reduction to lower bounds in circuit complexity, specifically on the AC$^0$ formula size of the colored subgraph isomorphism problem. Formally, we show the following: if a first-order sentence $\Phi$ of quantifier-rank $k$ is preserved under homomorphisms on finite structures, then it is equivalent on finite structures to an existential-positive sentence $\Psi$ of quantifier-rank $k^{O(1)}$. Quantitatively, this improves the result of [39], where the upper bound on the quantifier-rank of $\Psi$ is a non-elementary function of $k$.

Abstract:We determine for which known finite simple groups $G$ and which primes $p$ the $p$-fusion system of $G$ is simple. This means first collecting together the results that were already known (and correcting two errors made in an earlier study of this question), and then handling the remaining cases. At the same time, we develop some new tools to use when determining $O^{p'}(\mathcal{F})$ for arbitrary saturated fusion systems.

Abstract:We prove that a `small' extension of a minimal AF equivalence relation on a Cantor set is orbit equivalent to the AF relation. By a `small' extension we mean an equivalence relation generated by the minimal AF equivalence relation and another AF equivalence relation which is defined on a closed thin subset. The result we obtain is a generalization of the main theorem in [GMPS2].

Abstract:It is well known that the strong subadditivity theorem is hold for classical system, but it is very difficult to prove that it is hold for quantum system. The first proof of this theorem is due to Lieb by using the Lieb's theorem. Here we use the conditions obtained in our previous work of matrix analysis method to give a new proof of this famous theorem. This new proof is very elementary, it only needs to carefully analyse the minimal value of a function. This proof also shows that the conditions obtained in our previous work are stronger than the strong subadditivity theorem.

Abstract:In this paper we present a proof of Goodman's Theorem, a classical result in the metamathematics of constructivism, which states that the addition of the axiom of choice to Heyting arithmetic in finite types does not increase the collection of provable arithmetical sentences. Our proof relies on several ideas from earlier proofs by other authors, but adds some new ones as well. In particular, we show how a recent paper by Jaap van Oosten can be used to simplify a key step in the proof. We have also included an interesting corollary for classical systems pointed out to us by Ulrich Kohlenbach.

Abstract:One of the main results stated in Theorem 4.4 of our article, which appears in Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 372 (2019), no. 10, 7191–7223, is that the structure algebra K [ M ( X , r ) ] K[M(X,r)] , over a field K K , of a finite bijective left non-degenerate solution ( X , r ) (X,r) of the Yang–Baxter equation is a module-finite central extension of a commutative affine subalgebra. This is proven by showing that the structure monoid M ( X , r ) M(X,r) is central-by-finite. This however is not true, even in case ( X , r ) (X,r) is a (left and right) non-degenerate involutive solution. The proof contains a subtle mistake. However, it turns out that the monoid M ( X , r ) M(X,r) is abelian-by-finite and thus the conclusion that K [ M ( X , r ) ] K[M(X,r)] is a module-finite normal extension of a commutative affine subalgebra remains valid. In particular, K [ M ( X , r ) ] K[M(X,r)] is Noetherian and satisfies a polynomial identity. The aim of this paper is to give a proof of this result. In doing so, we also strengthen Lemma 5.3 (and its consequences, namely Lemma 5.4 and Proposition 5.5) showing that these results on the prime spectrum of the structure monoid hold even if the assumption that the solution ( X , r ) (X,r) is square-free is omitted.

Abstract:We modify the standard proof of Paley's theorem about lacunary coefficients of functions in $H^1$ to work without analytic factorization. This leads to the first direct proof of the extension of Paley's theorem that we applied to the former Littlewood conjecture about $L^1$ norms of exponential sums.
