Abstract: •The differences of mechanisms of the bioleaching and biooxidation on metal sulfides can be more clearly and explicitly understood by summarizing and comparing the two classic minerals, chalcopyrite and pyrite.•The importance and popularity of biohydrometallurgy can be presented by listing the application following the development chain and interdisciplinary.•The analysis of the bioleaching mechanisms are displayed through different logic chains or from different discipline aspects.•The paper includes the conclusions and summary of the latest research, which basically cover the research and applied status of biohydrometallurgy based on the former publications and reviews.
