Abstract:As we enter the twenty-first century, the field of hydrometallurgy has emerged as a predominant force in extractive metallurgy, emphasizing the need for revitalization of various technologies applied to extractive metallurgy. As there have been numerous rethinking of the way we approach the field of extraction metallurgy, several developments have been introduced. In this paper, three areas of new developments in hydrometallurgy have been selected, and some impacts in metal extraction are discussed. (A) Thermodynamic calculations allow us to understand the effect of anions on the solubility of metal compounds. (B) Introduction of non-aqueous media, such as ionic liquids and deep eutectic solvents, may represent a paradigm shift in the broad sense of hydrometallurgy in the future. (C) A combination of two or more processes, such as electrochemical cell and membrane technologies, may induce a synergistic effect in the metal production and separation processes.

Abstract:Bioleaching of metal sulfides is performed by diverse microorganisms. The dissolution of metal sulfides occurs via two chemical pathways, either the thiosulfate or the polysulfide pathway. These are determined by the metal sulfides' mineralogy and their acid solubility. The microbial cell enables metal sulfide dissolution via oxidation of iron(II) ions and inorganic sulfur compounds. Thereby, the metal sulfide attacking agents iron(III) ions and protons are generated. Cells are active either in a planktonic state or attached to the mineral surface, forming biofilms. This review, as an update of the previous one (Vera et al., 2013a), summarizes some recent discoveries relevant to bioleaching microorganisms, contributing to a better understanding of their lifestyle. These comprise phylogeny, chemical pathways, surface science, biochemistry of iron and sulfur metabolism, anaerobic metabolism, cell–cell communication, molecular biology, and biofilm lifestyle. Recent advances from genetic engineering applied to bioleaching microorganisms will allow in the future to better understand important aspects of their physiology, as well as to open new possibilities for synthetic biology applications of leaching microbial consortia.

Abstract:There has been a strong interest in technologies suited for mining and processing of low-grade ores because of the rapid depletion of mineral resources in the world. In most cases, the extraction of copper from such raw materials is achieved by applying the leaching procedures. However, its low extraction efficiency and the long extraction period limit its large-scale commercial applications in copper recovery, even though bioleaching has been widely employed commercially for heap and dump bioleaching of secondary copper sulfide ores. Overcoming the technical challenges requires a better understanding of leaching kinetics and on-site microbial activities. Herein, this paper reviews the current status of main commercial biomining operations around the world, identifies factors that affect chalcocite dissolution both in chemical leaching and bioleaching, summarizes the related kinetic research, and concludes with a discussion of two on-site chalcocite heap leaching practices. Further, the challenges and innovations for the future development of chalcocite hydrometallurgy are presented in the end.

Abstract:Modern hydrometallurgy has been developing for more than 100 years and the related articles keep piling up. Based on a bibliometric analysis of the articles in <em>Hydrometallurgy</em>, the most authoritative journal in the field of hydrometallurgy, we try to catch the research and development trends from a global perspective. Firstly, keywords burstness shows that rare earth, recycling, lithium, ionic liquid, and thorium are the hotspots in recent years, and the economic and technological reasons behind them were discussed in depth. Secondly, the proportion of biohydrometallurgy grows fast from 5% to 13% and the related articles are almost all about bioleaching. There are some new directions such as direct preparation of materials in hydrometallurgical processes and ion-imprinted techniques. Thirdly, the advanced instrument analysis methods such as XAFS (X-ray absorption fine structure), gene sequencing, and micro-CT promote the deep understanding of hydrometallurgy mechanism. Finally, the cooperation network and contribution of the main institutes were mapped.

Abstract:Bioleaching of metal sulfides is performed by a diverse group of microorganisms. The dissolution chemistry of metal sulfides follows two pathways, which are determined by the mineralogy and the acid solubility of the metal sulfides: the thiosulfate and the polysulfide pathways. Bacterial cells can effect this metal sulfide dissolution via iron(II) ion and sulfur compound oxidation. Thereby, iron(III) ions and protons, the metal sulfide-attacking agents, are available. Cells can be active either in planktonic state or in forming biofilms on the mineral surface; however, the latter is much more efficient in terms of bioleaching kinetics. In the case of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans, bacterial exopolymers contain iron(III) ions, each complexed by two uronic acid residues. The resulting positive charge allows an electrostatic attachment to the negatively charged pyrite. Thus, the first function of complexed iron(III) ions is the mediation of cell attachment, while their second function is oxidative dissolution of the metal sulfide, similar to the role of free iron(III) ions in non-contact leaching. In both cases, the electrons extracted from the metal sulfide reduce molecular oxygen via a redox chain forming a supercomplex spanning the periplasmic space and connecting both outer and inner membranes. In this review, we summarize some recent discoveries relevant to leaching bacteria which contribute to a better understanding of these fascinating microorganisms. These include surface science, biochemistry of iron and sulfur metabolism, anaerobic metabolism, and biofilm formation. The study of microbial interactions among multispecies leaching consortia, including cell-to-cell communication mechanisms, must be considered in order to reveal more insights into the biology of bioleaching microorganisms and their potential biotechnological use.

From exploration to remediation: A microbial perspective for innovation in mining

Abstract:<p>As society transitions to low-carbon, renewable energy resources, the demand for metals and minerals is set to increase. Massive quantities of base metals and mineral materials (for example, silica and concrete) along with smaller quantities of precious metals will be required for the construction of wind turbines, solar panels and battery storage facilities to meet the demands of the 'Electric Planet' of the future. Harnessing microbe-mineral-metal interactions may offer many opportunities to improve some mining practises and support the long-term sustainability of mining. As easily exploitable, high-grade deposits are becoming increasingly depleted there is a need for new technologies to improve exploration and mining strategies. Microorganisms are ubiquitous and diverse, surviving in almost all environments in the Earth's crust and recent advances in molecular techniques have enabled scientists to study these communities is extraordinary detail. Microorganisms also interact directly with their environment; both responding to and changing the environment around them. These responses and their influences on the surrounding environment are preserved within their genome (a complete set of the DNA of the microorganism). Here, we discuss using state-of-the-art sequencing techniques to identify key microbial genes that have been demonstrated to correlate with metal concentrations. These genetic-based bioindicators may provide additional tools to guide and improve the success rate of mineral exploration programmes. Advances in molecular techniques will also improve existing biohydrometallurgical techniques and expand the commodity range for which biohydrometallurgy are currently economically viable. Finally, microorganisms may be used in a number of strategies for mine remediation; specifically, we review in detail microbially accelerated carbon capture and storage strategies and mine waste stabilisation.</p>

Research progress in biohydrometallurgy of rare metals and heavy nonferrous metals with an emphasis on China

Abstract:In the past decade, progress in the field of biohydrometallurgy had been significant. A total of 17 novel biomining microorganisms were discovered, and eight copper heap bioleaching plants and 11 gold biooxidation plants were established or expanded. In this review, it was summarized the physiological properties of the newly isolated biomining microorganisms and three novel microbial ecological methods for studying microbial community dynamics and structure. In addition, biohydrometallurgy research on rare metals such as uranium, molybdenum, tellurium, germanium, indium, and secondary rare metal resources, as well as heavy nonferrous metals such as copper, nickel, cobalt, and gold has been reviewed, with an emphasis on China. In future, further studies on bioleaching of chalcopyrite, rare metals, secondary resources from waste, and environmental pollution caused by resource utilization are necessary.Graphical AbstractZijinshan heap bioleaching plant restarted operation in 2012 with capacity of 30,000 ton·year−1. The average copper grade is 0.308 %. The ore particle size is 40 mm accounting for 80 %. The heap height is 8 m. The solution pH is controlled at 1.5–1.7, and redox potential is maintained at 730–760 mV. After 185 days leaching, copper leaching rate of more than 76 % and iron leaching rate of <6 % are achieved.

Abstract:Copper, an essential metal for the energy transition, is primarily obtained from chalcopyrite through hydrometallurgical and pyrometallurgical methods. The risks and harmful impacts of these processes pose significant concerns for environmental and human safety, highlighting the need for more efficient and eco-friendly hydrometallurgical methods. This review article emphasizes current processes such as oxidative leaching, bioleaching, and pressure leaching that have demonstrated efficiency in overcoming the complicated chalcopyrite network. Oxidative leaching operates under benign conditions within the leaching media; nevertheless, the introduction of oxidizing agents provides benefits and advantages. Bioleaching, a non-aggressive method, has shown a gradual increase in copper extraction efficiency and has been explored using both primary and secondary sources. Pressure leaching, known for its effectiveness and selectivity in copper extraction, is becoming commercially more viable with increased research investments. This research also provides important data for advancing future research in the field.

Abstract:Biotechnology has increasing relevance worldwide in the mining sector, either as a response to the recovery of metals (gold, silver, copper, zinc, nickel, among others) as well as an alternative in the bioremediation of contaminated soil and water, frequent problems directly linked to mining activities. Hence, acidophilic microorganisms are of special scientific and industrial interest for the sustainable use of mineral resources. Nowadays, a wide variety of acidophilic chemolithotrophic microorganisms (MOs) are recognized, Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans , Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans , Acidithiobacillus caldus , and Leptospirillum ferrooxidans, among others; those MOs grow in culture medium at pH ≤ 3 and obtain cellular energy from the oxidation of inorganic compounds, such as sulfur and iron. These microorganisms have different abilities to act on the mineral, converting insoluble metal sulfides into soluble metal sulfates of those species that are of interest, or that prevent optimal recovery of a specific mineral. Such microorganisms have been applied in biomining operations and are internationally known for the recovery of valuable metals from low-grade ores and refractory ores. Likewise, these acidophilic MOs can bioremediate soils contaminated with metals, extract metals from sludge generated as a byproduct in wastewater treatment, detoxify hazardous waste and recover metals from electronic waste; so the main interest of biomining processes lies in the economic impact that has benefited the world, since it is known that 5% of the gold and 20% of the copper that has been extracted worldwide are using this type of bacteria in bioleaching processes. The objective of this review is to expand the knowledge of the characteristics and applications of the main acidophilic microorganisms used in the solubilization/extraction of minerals, whether for the recovery of metals, bioremediation, or reduction of metals in different systems.

Abstract:Bioprocessing for the recovery of metal from divergent resources using the microbial strategy has emerged as a green technology in metallurgical operations. The limitations to maintain the ideal condition for bacterial growth with slow kinetics, however, have been considered as major obstacles to bioprocessing being implemented more widely. This can be overcome by integrating the microbes with a chemical processing route. The available reports on recent developments in hybrid bio-chemical processing of both primary and secondary resources have presented promising results, exhibiting the potential for use in large-scale metallurgy. In this context, reviewing the factors of the hybrid process would benefit from knowledge acquired in fundamental studies. The present review focuses on bio-chemical process integration using eco-friendly design tools for treating the difficult to extract resources and complex spent materials as well. Furthermore, the potential of hybrid technology has been evaluated by establishing an economic model as a case study which encompasses features of economic development, environmental consideration and societal matters to achieve process sustainability. © 2017 Society of Chemical Industry

Abstract:Mineral biotechnological applications, e.g., bioleaching and bio-beneficiation, for waste treatment and resource recovery have invited due attention owing to their economic and eco-friendly benefits in comparison to the conventional methods. Although research has progressed well, there are several aspects that are still not well understood and require more attention in view of full-scale industrial application of these processes. For example, microbe-mineral/galvanic interactions, passivation phenomenon, synergistic effects among the microbes, identification of novel and robust microbial strains, etc., require more studies to explore the fundamental aspects. In addition, mode of treatment for a wide variety of ores and/or concentrates, advances in engineering applications and scaling-up of bio-processes to industrial level along with the assessment of techno-economic feasibility, life-cycle, and environmental impact can provide numerous opportunities for the researchers to further explore the applied aspects. This paper presents comprehensive details, including the latest research, on the fundamentals and applications of bioleaching, bioflotation and bioflocculation for the readers. The key microorganisms and their mode of action, factors affecting each bio-processes and aspects related to their scale-up and industrial applications are reviewed, analyzed and compared. It is believed that the recent advances, emerging dimensions and future directions of research presented in this paper will serve as a guide for the researchers to further explore this exciting field of research.

Abstract:The oxidation of various sulfides in mining wastes and rock outcrops commonly leads to environmental problems. Therefore, surface weathering of metal sulfide has been one of the most concerned epigenetic processes. More and more geological facts and experiments indicate microorganism play crucial roles in these processes. Microorganism cells tend to attach onto sulfide surface and construct biofilms. In the interface microenvironment between mineral surface and biofilm, microbial oxidation and chemical oxidation mutually promote the decomposition of sulfides and intensively erode the sulfide surfaces. The elements of the sulfide (e.g. , S, As and Fe) experience complicate processes of electron transferring and step-by-step oxidation, and produce ferric sulfates and oxides finally as well as large amounts of acid mine drainage bearing various heavy metals. The microbial oxidation is generally influenced by factors, such as bacteria type, light and Fe2+ concentrations in solution. Therefore, the release of heavy metals due to sulfides oxidation commonly brings serious environmental harm, and the produced AMD leads to decomposition of carbonate minerals and thereafter influences the global carbon cycle. Meanwhile, the consumption of oxygen probably had slowed down the oxygenation of earth atmosphere in the Archean-Proterozoic eras. Although the understanding on the microbe-mineral interaction has been greatly promoted in last decades, there are plenty rooms for the studies on the mechanism at atomic level and the impacts of the microbial oxidation on the geochemical cycles at the global level, and thus it is imperative and urgent to employ in-situ measurement techniques and global geochemical models. The related studies also favor the development of biological metallurgical technologies.
Bioavailability Assessment of Metals in Freshwater Environments: A Historical Review

Abstract:Many metals (aluminum, cadmium, cobalt, copper, nickel, lead, zinc) are widely studied environmental contaminants because of their ubiquity, potential toxicity to aquatic life, and tendency for toxicity to vary widely as a function of water chemistry. The interactions between metal and water chemistry influence metal "bioavailability," an index of the rate and extent to which the metal reaches the site of toxic action. The implications of metal bioavailability for ecological risk assessment are large, with as much as a 100-fold variability across a range of water chemistries in surface waters. Beginning as early as the 1930s, considerable research effort was expended toward documenting and understanding metal bioavailability as a function of total and dissolved metal, water hardness, natural organic matter, pH, and other water characteristics. The understanding of these factors and improvements in both analytical and computational chemistry led to the development of modeling approaches intended to describe and predict the relationship between water chemistry and metal toxicity, including the free ion activity model, the gill surface interaction model, the biotic ligand model, and additional derivatives and regression models that arose from similar knowledge. The arc of these scientific advances can also be traced through the evolution of the US Environmental Protection Agency's ambient water quality criteria over the last 50 yr, from guidance in the "Green Book" (1968) to metal-specific criteria produced in the last decade. Through time, water quality criteria in many jurisdictions have incorporated increasingly sophisticated means of addressing metal bioavailability. The present review discusses the history of scientific understanding of metal bioavailability and the development and application of models to incorporate this knowledge into regulatory practice. A Novel Two-Stage Method of Co-Leaching of Manganese–Silver Ore and Silver-Bearing Pyrite Based on Successive Chemical and Bio Treatments: Optimization and Mechanism Study

Abstract:In this work, bio-hydrometallurgy technology was employed and a novel two-stage method based on successive chemical and bio treatments was proposed to collaboratively utilize manganese–silver ore and silver-bearing pyrite. In the optimization research of the chemical leaching stage, the sensitive factors for the Mn leaching efficiency were screened by Plackett–Burman design, and central compound design was performed to settle the optimized parameters. A mixed strain of bacteria containing Sulfobacillus thermosulfidooxidans, At. caldus and Leptospirillum ferrooxidans was applied in the bioleaching stage. A conventional cyanidation process carried out with the Mn leaching residuals suggested an efficient recovery of Ag. Applying a two-stage method with the optimum conditions, the leaching efficiency of 95.3% (Mn) and 96.3% (Ag) were obtained with 284.94 kg/t silver-bearing pyrite addition and 277.44 kg/t sulfuric acid consumption with a temperature at 77.73 °C and stirring speed at 287.76 rpm. Mineral behaviors were investigated with XRD and SEM/EDS analysis, and it was revealed that the oxidation of sulfur is the crux in reducing the usage of reagents, and the presence of leaching bacteria enhanced the oxidation efficiently. Through optimization and mechanism study, this paper provides an opportunity to co-leach the manganese–silver ore and silver-bearing pyrite process in a more economical and environmental way.

Abstract:The current global demand in terms of both the amounts and range of metals for industrial and domestic use greatly exceeds that at any previous time in human history. Recycling is inadequate to meet these needs and therefore mining primary metal ores will continue to be a major industry in the foreseeable future. The question of how metal mining can develop in a manner which is less demanding of energy and less damaging of the environment in a world whose population is increasingly aware of, and concerned about, the environment, requires urgent redress. Increased application of biotechnologies in the mining sector could go some way in solving this conundrum, yet, biomining (harnessing microorganisms to enhance the recovery of base and precious metals) has remained a niche application since it was first knowingly used in the 1960s. This manuscript reviews the development and current status of biomining applications and highlights their limitations as well as their strengths. New areas of biotechnology that could be applied in the mining sector, and their potential impact in terms of both their potential environmental and economic benefits, are also discussed.

Abstract:Polymetallic nodules and crusts, hydrothermal vents from the Deep Sea are economically interesting, since they contain alloying components, e.g., manganese or cobalt, that are used in the production of special steels; in addition, they contain rare metals applied for plasma screens, for magnets in hard disks, or in hybrid car motors. While hydrothermal vents can regenerate in weeks, polymetallic nodules and seamount crusts grow slowly. Even though the geochemical basis for the growth of the nodules and crusts has been well studied, the contribution of microorganisms to the formation of these minerals remained obscure. Recent HR-SEM (high-resolution scanning electron microscopy) analyses of nodules and crusts support their biogenic origin. Within the nodules, bacteria with surface S-layers are arranged on biofilm-like structures, around which Mn deposition starts. In crusts, coccoliths represent the dominant biologically formed structures that act as bio-seeds for an initial Mn deposition. In contrast, hydrothermal vents have apparently an abiogenic origin; however, their minerals are biogenically transformed by bacteria. In turn, strategies can now be developed for biotechnological enrichment as well as selective dissolution of metals from such concretions. We are convinced that the recent discoveries will considerably contribute to our understanding of the participation of organic matrices in the enrichment of those metals and will provide the basis for feasibility studies for biotechnological applications.
Biohydrometallurgical Recovery of Metals from Waste Electronic Equipment: Current Status and Proposed Process

Abstract:Electronic waste (e-waste) is an emerging health and environmental burden due to the toxic substances present within e-wastes. To address this burden, e-wastes contain various base, rare earth and noble metals, which can be recovered from these substances, thus serving as secondary sources of metals. Pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical processes have been developed to extract metals from e-waste. However, these techniques are energy-intensive and produce secondary wastes, which will add to the operating costs of the process. However, the biohydrometallurgical approach has been deemed as an eco-friendly, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly process that does not produce large quantities of secondary waste. However, research has focused chiefly on one-stage bioprocesses to recover the metals of interest and majorly on base metals recovery. Hence, this review proposes a two-stage bio-hydrometallurgical process where the first stage will consist of acidophilic iron and sulphur oxidising organisms to extract base metals, followed by the second stage which will consist of cyanide-producing organisms for the solubilisation of rare earth and precious metals. The solid waste residue that is produced from the system can be used in the synthesis of silica nanomaterials, which can be utilised for various applications.
Electrolytic production of copper from chalcopyrite

Abstract:The transition to renewable energy infrastructure necessitates rapid growth in copper production, averaging at least 3.5% annually to 2050. The current smelting–converting–electrorefining route must be revisited considering these future prospects as ore grades deplete and the costs to mitigate emissions to the environment increase. Here, we investigate electrolytic alternatives, reviewing the background and recent developments for four classes of electrolytes to directly decompose the most important industrial copper mineral, chalcopyrite: aqueous solutions, ionic liquids, molten salts, and molten sulfides. These electrolytes are discussed in the framework of electrochemical engineering, as applied to the electrolytic decomposition of chalcopyrite. A vision is proposed in which an electrolytic technique, integrated with low cost and sustainable power, enables the production of unprecedented annual tonnages of copper from low-grade chalcopyrite, with valuable by-products and enhanced selectivity for impurities.

Abstract:The dissolution of the metal sulfides in polymetallic mines not only produces acid mining drainage (AMD),but also releases the abundant heavy metals into the surroundings,which results in serious environmental contamination.Existing studies indicate that various microorganisms play important roles in the dissolution of minerals and in the release,transportation,precipitation and enrichment of heavy metals.In this papers,the new approaches on the mechanisms of microbiologically mediated dissolution of minerals,the interfacial processes between microbes and minerals,and the function of biofilms are summarized.The features of microbes community and species phylogeny are discussed.Furthermore,the microbiogeochemical cycles of the heavy metals released by the microbiological dissolution of metal sulfides and the influence of the heavy metals on the microbiological oxidation are reviewed.Finally,the potential applications of microorganisms in the remediation of contaminated environments are also addressed.
