Abstract:Liquid crystals (LCs) are a delicate state of matter that exists between the anisotropic solid and isotropic liquid states. LCs are the materials of choice in designing stimuli-responsive systems for various applications. Most discotic liquid crystals (DLCs) prefer to self-organize to form columnar (Col) phases by the attractive π–π interactions and nanophase segregation of incompatible molecular segments. This chapter deals with different procedures utilized for alignment of Col phases. Col phases - which were considered “molecular wires” - are yet to make a major impact in the fabrication of proposed organic electronic devices such as organic solar cells (OSCs), organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), and organic field-effect transistors (OFETs). The chapter includes the molecular design methodologies, and concentrates on different processing methods. Practicability of DLCs as organic semiconducting layers demands a greater control over the molecular design and the resultant macroscopic properties.

Abstract:Room‐temperature discotic liquid crystals (DLCs) based on an anthraquinone core functionalized with polar ester groups that exhibit the inherent tendency of highly homeotropic alignment of the samples are reported, leading to the promising ambipolar charge‐carrier mobility along with the perfect balance of processability in organic electronics. Columnar assemblies of these DLC‐based organic semiconductors show a maximum hole mobility of 5.04 cm2 V−1 s−1 and an electron mobility of 4.93 cm2 V−1 s−1 in space‐charge limited current (SCLC) devices. The future of next‐generation electronics relies on low‐cost organic semiconductors that are tailored to simultaneously provide all requisite optoelectronic properties, focusing greatly on ambipolar charge‐transport and solution processability. In this regard, room‐temperature discotic liquid crystals (DLCs) are potential candidates, where quasi‐1D self‐assembly affords a charge‐transport channel along their columnar axis. This work shows a molecular design strategy by utilizing anthraquinone as the primary motif, surrounded by ester functionalized tri‐alkoxy phenyl units to develop room‐temperature DLCs (1.1–1.3). Here, the polar ester functionality stabilizes the columnar mesophase over a wide range through the involvement of dipole‐dipole interaction along with the π–π stacking. Throughout the entire mesophase transition, reported compounds 1.1–1.3 exhibit a highly ordered 2D columnar oblique (Colob) self‐assembly. Space charge limited current (SCLC) experiments reveal balanced ambipolar charge transport, with the maximum hole and electron mobilities of 5.04 and 4.93 cm2 V−1 s−1, respectively. From the conoscopic results, their propensity to align in a highly homeotropic fashion is demonstrated. It is further justified by the azimuthal plot corresponding to the (11) peak of grazing incidence small angle X‐ray scattering (GISAXS), denoting the crucial role of the design and alignment for efficient movement of charge carriers in the material.

Abstract:Discotic liquid crystal (LC) molecules readily form columnar supramolecular structures.Because of molecular mobility in the LC state these columnar assemblies can self-heal structural defects to a certain extent.Therefore,conjugated aromatic molecules of the discotic LC state may exhibit exceptional charge carrier transport properties,and thus are potential active materials for use in optoelectronic devices.In this review,a number of discotic LC materials including benzene,triphenylene,hexabenzocoronene,perylene,and phthalocyanine derivatives are reviewed.The emphases are on the correlation between chemical structure and LC properties and some recent developments in the application of these materials in optoelectronic devices such as organic light-emitting diodes (OLED),organic field-effect transistors (OFET),and photovoltaic cells.In addition,studies related to the dynamics of some discotic LC materials are briefly discussed.

Abstract:The large-area formation of functional micropatterns with liquid crystals is of great significance for diversified applications in interdisciplinary fields. Meanwhile, the control of molecular alignment in the patterns is fundamental and prerequisite for the adequate exploitation of their photoelectric properties. However, it would be extremely complicated and challenging for discotic liquid crystals (DLCs) to achieve the goal, because they are insensitive to external fields and surface chemistry. Herein, a simple method of patterning and aligning DLCs on flat substrates is disclosed through precise control of the formation and dewetting of the capillary liquid bridges, within which the DLC molecules are confined. Large-area uniform alignment occurs spontaneously due to directional shearing force when the solvent is slowly evaporated and programmable patterns could be directly generated on desired substrates. Moreover, the in-plane column direction of DLCs is tunable by slightly tailoring their chemical structures which changes their self-assembly behaviors in liquid bridges. The patterned DLCs show molecular orientation-dependent charge transport properties and are promising for templating self-assembly of other materials. The study provides a facile method for manipulation of the macroscopic patterns and microscopic molecular orientation which opens up new opportunities for electronic applications of DLCs.

Abstract:It reviews discotic colloids sized from nanometers to micrometers with attention devoted to the synthetic colloidal disks,their assembly,and their roles in soft condensed matter and material science.Various strategies have been utilized to synthesize discotic colloids,including nanocrystal growth via selective surfactant adsorption,controlled precipitation,exfoliation of layered structure compounds,shape changing of liquid-crystal emulsions.These disks have been employed to study liquid crystalline phase formation and suspension rheology.Disk-polymer nano-composites,such as Nylon-clay-hybrid(NCH) and α-ZrP-epoxy,have wide applications in advanced functional material engineering.A special attention is drawn on the human red blood cells(RBC) for the research of its flow and deformation towards medical benefits.

Abstract:The columnar nanostructures of discotic liquid crystals are fascinating supramolecular systems with promising electronic and optoelectronic properties. Due to their remarkable performance in organic field effect transistors and organic photovoltaic devices, they have been regarded as a new generation of soft organic semiconductors. However, in order to realize the full potential of these intriguing materials, the discotic molecules need to be suitably oriented in the device structures directed by different stimuli. The devices fabricated with oriented materials have been demonstrated to perform better than using non-oriented materials. Over the years, different techniques have been developed to direct the appropriate alignment of the columnar phase of discotic liquid crystals on and in-between substrates. This chapter discusses the different methods used for the alignment control of discotic columnar phases parallel (planar) and perpendicular (homeotropic) to the substrates up to a macroscopic length scale.

Abstract:Discotic liquid crystal (DLC) polymers in columnar phases are fascinating and promising organic semi-conducting materials as they combine the advantages of DLCs with the flexibility and good processability of polymers. Synthetic challenges hinder progress in this area, particularly in the preparation of such polymers in a well-controlled way. A group of butoxy-substituted triphenylene (TP)-based side-chain DLC polymers have been prepared by reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization via rational macromolecular engineering with particular emphasis on the effects of spacer length and molecular weight. The DLC polymers with shorter alkyl spacers exhibit various ordered columnar LC or columnar plastic phases and easily realize macroscopic homeotropic or planar columnar alignments. Very high hole mobilities over 0.1 cm(2) V-1 s(-1) are achieved by the well-defined, high-molecular-weight side-chain DLC polymers with shorter spacers, as evaluated by time-of-flight measurements. These high hole mobilities are mainly attributed to positive coupling between the side-chain TP discogens and the polymer backbones. These DLC polymers and the applied macromolecular engineering principles may pave the way for cost-effective, solution-processable organic semiconducting materials for various electronic and optoelectronic device applications.

Abstract:Development of photovoltaic solar cells using organic materials as active components is an emerging area of contemporary research endeavor toward sustainable energy harvesting. Among the organic optoelectronic materials, disc-shaped polycyclic aromatic compounds capable of exhibiting columnar liquid crystal (LC) properties are unique. Liquid crystalline materials simultaneously display the anisotropic properties of crystalline solids and flow properties of isotropic liquids. The order and dynamics of the molecules of liquid crystalline materials make them stimuli responsive smart soft materials. LCs are ubiquitous in our daily life as the active switching materials in flat panel display such as the screens of laptops, computers, cameras and mobile phones. Interestingly, the nematic LC phase of disc-like molecules has been used to fabricate optical compensation films which enable enlarging the viewing angle of LC display devices. However the columnar LC phase of disc-like compounds has been found to possess remarkable semiconducting properties. Like other LCs, they show promising characteristics such as controllable alignment and self-healing of structural defects which render them appealing candidates for use in organic semiconducting devices. In this chapter, we present the state-of-the-art of organic photovoltaics employing discotic LCs as active components as well as facilitating additives in the active layer of photovoltaic devices. Various discotic cores such as phthalocyanine, porphyrin, hexabenzocoronene, triphenylene, perylene diimide and others with different electronic properties have been used in organic photovoltaics. The discotic LCs act as electron and/ or hole transporting materials in the active layer, which have been tested both in bilayer and bulk heterojunction device configurations. Though this research enterprise is in early stage, with adequate attention these fascinating self-organizing materials could contribute toward the sustainable energy harvesting from solar radiation in future.
Charge transfer and opto-electronic properties of some newly designed polycatenar discotic liquid crystal derivatives: a DFT study

Abstract:Herein, we demonstrate effect of substituents on optoelectronic properties of discotic liquid crystals (DLCs) by using density functional theory (DFT) calculations at B3LYP/Lanl2Z level of theory. Three parent DLCs, namely, (1) benzene-1,3,5-triyl tris(3,5-dialkoxybenzoate), (2) N1, N3, N5-tris(3-alkoxyphenyl)benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxamide, and (3) trialkyl 4, 4′, 4″-(benzenetricarbonyltris (azanediyl)) tribenzoate benzoate and their –N and –S group derivatives of 1, 2, and 3, were investigated to observe the change in optoelectronic response of these systems. The frontier molecular orbital studies and electron affinity values indicate that the studied compounds are stable against the oxygen and moisture present in air. The calculated charge transfer integrals, electron, and hole mobility values revealed that parent DLCs and their derivatives can be employed as an effective n-type material for OLEDs; however, derivatives have enhanced charge transfer values compared with their parents. For better understanding of the thermochemistry and effect of substituents, frequency calculations were carried out. P1-D4 derivative having R = -NH-CO-CH3 terminal group came out to be theoretically the most favored having the lowest ΔG value. Computed UV/visible spectroscopic analysis showed minimum absorbance and maximum transmittance for derivative P2-D1 having –S-NH2 substituent. Molecular electrostatic potential surfaces mapped at potential range, i.e., − 8.531e-3esu to + 8.531e-3esu, describe electrophilic and nucleophilic characteristics. Introduction of electron donor groups enhanced electrical conductivity, excitation energy, and charge transfer integral, thus increasing optoelectronic properties of DLCs. However, these claims require further experimental verification.

Abstract:A range of triphenylene and phthalocyanine-based discotic liquid crystals (DLCs) can be aligned within micrometer-scale channels formed from SU8 patterned on silicon or glass surfaces. The channels can be filled with the DLC in its isotropic phase using capillary action. Alignment occurs spontaneously as the sample is slowly cooled into the Col(h) phase. Whilst all of these DLCs align with the columns perpendicular to the surface when they are sandwiched' between glass slides, in these channels, the DLC aligns with the column director parallel to the surface. It is also constrained to lie across the channels. The same alignment occurs when these DLCs are confined between SU8-topped interdigitated gold electrodes where it gives the optimum orientation for electrode-to-electrode conduction. The quality of the alignment depends on the particular liquid crystal used and on the width of the channel. For the Col(r) phase of octaoctylphthalocyanine there is additional epitaxial control over the orientation of the lattice such that the a/c face of the lattice is parallel to the surface. This is an important prerequisite for creating a bistable display device that switches by virtue of changing the direction of the tilt of the discs.
Planar Alignment of Columnar Discotic Liquid Crystals by Isotropic Phase Dewetting on Chemically Patterned Surfaces

Abstract:A novel method of creating planar aligned columnar discotic liquid crystals (cDLCs) on surfaces, which also gives control over the azimuthal angle, is presented. Surfaces are chemically patterned with stripes via microcontact printing of organothiol self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on gold, or via deep UV patterning of organosilane SAMs on silicon. These are then used to isolate long droplets of cDLCs by dewetting in the isotropic phase. Upon cooling from the isotropic into the hexagonal columnar phase, polarizing microscopy reveals that the cDLC aligns in a planar orientation. Results for three triphenylene derivatives (HAT-6; HHTT, H7T) and for a phthalocyanine derivative (8H(2)Pc) are presented. H7T and HAT-6 are found to align with the director perpendicular to the stripe direction, but HHTT and 8H(2)Pc align parallel to the stripe direction. This relatively simple new method for creating planar aligned columnar phases of DLCs gives control over the azimuthal angle: a condition required for organic field-effect transistor applications of cDLCs.
Synthesis, self-assembly and photophysical properties of AIEE-active triphenylamine-based discotic liquid crystals

Abstract:A series of triphenylamine-based discotic liquid crystals (DLCs) containing three α -cyanostilbene units and a central triphenylamine were designed and prepared using Suzuki coupling and Knoevenagel reaction. Polarized optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffraction were employed to investigate the textures, phase transition temperatures and self-assembly structures, demonstrating that all the compounds exhibit Col squ / p 4 mm phase. The only Col squ / p 4 mm phase could be observed with elongation of terminal alkyl chains, which might be attributed to the central propeller-shaped triphenylamine unit and α -cyanostilbene units with different configurations. These DLCs displayed temperature-dependent emission behavior and high fluorescence intensity even in isotropic state. Interestingly, these DLCs are insensitive for 365 nm UV light in bulk state, whereas sensitive in solution state. Distinct positive solvatochromism in different organic solvents and aggregation-induced enhanced emission (AIEE) behavior in tetrahydrofuran-H 2 O mixtures could be observed due to the intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) and twisted configuration induced by triphenylamine and α -cyanostilbene units, respectively. The optimized geometry and spatial distribution of the HOMO and LUMO obtained from density functional theory calculations well demonstrated ICT and twisted conformation. Therefore, this work will provide a rational molecular design strategy to construct AIEE-active liquid crystals with excellent properties and wide potential applications.

Self-assembled 1D Semiconductors: Liquid Crystalline Columnar Phase

Abstract:Organic semiconducting materials have emerged as potential alternative to inorganic silicon based semiconductors for the production of low-cost, flexible and light weight plastic electronic devices. When compared with crystalline and polymeric structures, liquid crystalline (LC) ordering in organic semiconductors favors their self-assembly into large area monodomain thin-film structures with carrier mobilities in the range from 10−3 cm2 V−1 s−1 to 10−1 cm2 V−1 s−1. The LC nature enables a self-healing process of structural defects such as grain boundaries within the material which is especially exploited during post production thermal treatment for device improvement. The main objective of this chapter is to review the research progress in the field of columnar LC semiconductors with the emphasis on molecular structure—charge transport property relationship, control of alignment, and their prospective applications in molecular electronics.
High-resolution dielectric study reveals pore size-dependent orientational order of a discotic liquid crystal confined in tubular nanopores

Abstract:We report a high-resolution dielectric study on a pyrene-based discotic liquid crystal (DLC) in the bulk state and confined in parallel tubular nanopores of monolithic silica and alumina membranes. The positive dielectric anisotropy of the DLC molecule at low frequencies (in the quasi-static case) allows us to explore the thermotropic collective orientational order. A face-on arrangement of the molecular discs on the pore walls and a corresponding radial arrangement of the molecules is found. In contrast to the bulk, the isotropic-to-columnar transition of the confined DLC is continuous, shifts with decreasing pore diameter to lower temperatures and exhibits a pronounced hysteresis between cooling and heating. These findings corroborate conclusions from previous neutron and X-ray scattering experiments as well as optical birefringence measurements. Our study also indicates that the relative simple dielectric technique presented here is a quite efficient method in order to study the thermotropic orientational order of DLC based nanocomposites.

Abstract:A series of novel discotic liquid-crystalline donor-acceptor(D-A) dyads 5D10An(n=4,5,6,7,8) adjusted by changing the chain length (n) of diester groups on perylene were synthesized based on triphenylene and perylene units which linked by a flexible linkage of 10-decyloxy-1-amine. Results from the Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), one-dimensional X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) patterns, and Polarized Optical Microscope (POM) images indicate that 5D10A4, 5D10A5, 5D10A6, and 5D10A7 exhibited hexagonal columnar phase at high temperature ranges and rectangular columnar phases at room temperature. Combining the XRD data and the steady state spectra of UV/vis and Fluorescence, the intramolecular triphenylenes and perylene diester cores stacked separately in distinct columns and nano-segregation occurred during self-assembly. HOMO/LUMO energy levels obtained from CV, UV/vis, UPS and Gaussian09. Charge carrier mobilities were measured by time-of-flight (TOF) device. These discotic liquid-crystalline compounds exhibited highly efficient ambipolar charge-transport properties and the hole and electron mobilities can reach the order of 10-3 cm2 V-1 S-1 by segregated D-A columns. This is the first reported D-A dyads discotic liquid crystals which was not only ambipolar transport but also the columnar phase structures of them can be stabilized at room temperature, providing potential utility of the strategy in organic optoelectronic applications.

Abstract:The discotic liquid crystal 4-((2, 3, 4-tris (octyloxy) phenyl) diazenyl) benzoic acid, hereafter referred as DLC A8, exhibited in dimeric form has been studied using a combination of quantum chemical approaches and vibrational spectroscopy. This study investigates the structural alteration of DLC A8 associated with phase transition. The phase transitions of DLC A8 are Iso → Discotic nematic → Columnar → Crystalline, which have been investigated using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) accompanied with polarized optical microscopy (POM). Monotropic columnar mesophase was observed during the cooling cycle while discotic nematic mesophase was observed in both the heating and cooling cycles. Density functional theory (DFT) along with IR and Raman spectroscopic techniques were utilized to study the dynamics of molecules during phase transition. To predict the most stable conformation of the molecule, one-dimensional PES scans have been performed along 31 flexible bonds using DFT/B3LYP/6-311G++(d,p) method. Vibrational normal modes were analyzed in detail, taking potential energy contribution into account. The spectral analysis of FT-IR and FT-Raman was done by deconvoluting the structural sensitive bands. The agreement between the calculated IR and Raman spectra and the observed FT-IR and Raman spectra at room temperature confirms our theoretically predicted molecular model of investigated discotic liquid crystal. Moreover, our studies have unraveled the existence of intact intermolecular H-bonding of dimers throughout the phase transitions.

Abstract:Semiconducting diamond-like carbon-diamond (DLC-diamond) films were deposited by r.f. plasma-enhanced chemical vapour deposition (PECVD) at room temperature. The source gas was a mixture of methane and argon and the substrates used were n type {100} silicon. The films are found to be semiconducting with a variable band gap from 1.2 to 4.0 eV which can be controlled by changing the deposition conditions. Rectifying DLC-carbon/silicon heterojunction diodes were fabricated. The undoped films are intrinsically p type with a deep acceptor level at about 0.34 eV from the top of the valence band. A typical resistivity is of the order of 106−108 ohm cm with a breakdown strength of 10 MV cm−1.The built-in potential at the DLC-diamond-silicon junction is 0.49 V. The photoresponse of the heterojunction diode was also characterized. Some preliminary results which show that DLC-diamond has potential as a band gap modulated multilayer material are also presented.
A UV-Responsive Multifunctional Photoelectric Device Based on Discotic Columnar Nanostructures and Molecular Motors.

Abstract:Orientation control of ordered materials would not only produce new physical phenomenon but also facilitate the development of fancy devices. Discotic liquid crystals (DLCs) form 1D charge transport pathway by self-organizing into columnar nanostructures via pi-pi stacking. However, controlling the electrical properties in such nanostructures with some direct and instant way is a formidable task for their high viscosity and insensitivity to external stimuli. Herein, the arbitrary control over electrical conductivity of such columnar nanostructures is achieved with UV light by incorporating DLCs with molecular motors. Highly ordered DLC microstripe arrays are generated on desired substrate through a capillary bridge dewetting strategy. The conductivity of the microstripes could be continuously modulated by 365 nm light due to the influence of molecular motion under UV irradiation on the electron orbital overlap of columnar nanostructures. This is so because the disorder degree of the DLC molecules is associated with the intensity of UV light and the doping concentration of molecular motors. Moreover, the device shows memory effect and reversible conductivity change. The DLC microstripe arrays are very promising for the applications in UV detectors, memory devices, optical switches, and so on.
