Abstract:We consider the problem of conformally deforming a metric by a fully nonlinear flow on a compact manifold with totally geodesic boundary. We prove that the k-curvature defined by the modified Schouten tensor always can be deformed in a natural way to a constant at exponential rate and the boundary preserves totally geodesic.

Abstract:In this note, we prove Cheng-Yau type local gradient estimate for harmonic functions on Alexandrov spaces with Ricci curvature bounded below. We adopt a refined version of Moser's iteration which is based on Zhang-Zhu's Bochner type formula in [24]. Our result improves the previous one of Zhang-Zhu [24] in the case of negative Ricci lower bound.

Abstract:In this paper, we employ the Nash-Moser iteration technique to study local and global properties of positive solutions to the equation $$\Delta_pv+bv^q+cv^r =0$$ on complete Riemannian manifolds with Ricci curvature bounded from below, where $b, c\in\mathbb R$, $p>1$, and $q\leq r$ are some real constants. Assuming certain conditions on $b,\, c,\, p,\, q$ and $r$, we derive succinct Cheng-Yau type gradient estimates for positive solutions, which is of sharp form. These gradient estimates allow us to obtain some Liouville-type theorems and Harnack inequalities. Our Liouville-type results are novel even in Euclidean spaces. Based on the local gradient estimates and a trick of Sung and Wang, we also obtain the global gradient estimates for such solutions. As applications we show the uniqueness of positive solutions to some generalized Allen-Cahn equation and Fisher-KPP equation.

Abstract:Let $ (M, g) $ be a compact manifold or a complete non-compact manifold without boundary, $ \dim M \geqslant 4 $, and not locally conformally flat. In this article, we introduce a new local method to resolve the Yamabe problem on compact manifold for dimensions at least $ 4 $, and the Yamabe problem on non-compact complete manifolds without boundary, which are pointwise conformal to subsets of some compact manifolds. In particular, the new local method applies to the hard cases--the Yamabe constants are positive. Our local method also generalizes Brezis and Nirenberg's nonlinear eigenvalue problem to subsets of manifolds.

Abstract:This article presents new local and global gradient estimates of Li-Yau type for positive solutions to a class of nonlinear elliptic equations on smooth metric measure spaces involving the Witten Laplacian. The estimates are derived under natural lower bounds on the associated Bakry-Émery Ricci curvature tensor and find utility in proving general Harnack inequalities and Liouville-type theorems to mention a few. The results here unify, extend and improve various existing results in the literature for special nonlinearities already of huge interest and applications. Some important consequences are presented and discussed.

Abstract:In this paper we prove some Hamilton type and Li-Yau type gradient estimates on positive solutions to generalized nonlinear parabolic equations on smooth metric measure space with compact boundary. The geometry of the space in terms of lower bounds on the weighted Bakry-Emery Ricci curvature tensor and weighted mean curvature of the boundary are key in proving generalized local and global gradient estimates. Various applications of these gradient estimates in terms of parabolic Harnack inequalities and Liouville type results are discussed. Further consequences to some specific models informed by the nature of the nonlinearities are highlighted.

We consider gradient estimates for the positive solutions to the following nonlinear parabolic equation: u_t=Δ u+aulog u+bu on M n × [0, T ], where a , b are two real constants. We derive local gradient estimates of the Li-Yau type for positive solutions of the above equations on Riemannian manifolds with Ricci curvature bounded from below. As applications, several parabolic Harnack inequalities are obtained. In particular, our results extend the ones of Davies in Heat Kernels and Spectral Theory, Cambridge Tracts in Mathematics, vol 92, Cambridge University Press, Cambridge,1989, and Li and Xu in Adv Math 226:4456–4491 ( 2011 ).

Abstract:In this paper, we explore the positive solutions to the Finslerian nonlinear equation $$\frac{\partial u}{\partial t} = \Delta^{\nabla u} u + au\log u + bu,$$ which is related to Ricci solitons and serves as the Euler-Lagrange equation to the Finslerian log-energy functional. We then obtain the global gradient estimate of its positive solution on a compact Finsler metric measure space with the weighted Ricci curvature bounded below. Furthermore, using a new comparison theorem developed by the first author, we also establish a local gradient estimate on a non-compact forward complete Finsler metric measure spaces with the mixed weighted Ricci curvature bounded below, as well as finite bounds of misalignment and some non-Riemannian curvatures. Lastly, we prove the Harnack inequalities and a Liouville-type theorem of such solutions.

Abstract:We study the convergence issue for the gradient algorithm (employing general step sizes) for optimization problems on general Riemannian manifolds (without curvature constraints). Under the assumption of the local convexity/quasi-convexity (resp. weak sharp minima), local/global convergence (resp. linear convergence) results are established. As an application, the linear convergence properties of the gradient algorithm employing the constant step sizes and the Armijo step sizes for finding the Riemannian $L^p$ ($p\in[1,+\infty)$) centers of mass are explored, respectively, which in particular extend and/or improve the corresponding results in \cite{Afsari2013}.

Abstract:We study existence and uniqueness results for the Yamabe problem on non-compact manifolds of negative curvature type. Our first existence and uniqueness result concerns those such manifolds which are asymptotically locally hyperbolic. In this context, our result requires only a partial $C^2$ decay of the metric, namely the full decay of the metric in $C^1$ and the decay of the scalar curvature. In particular, no decay of the Ricci curvature is assumed. In our second result we establish that a local volume ratio condition, when combined with negativity of the scalar curvature at infinity, is sufficient for existence of a solution. Our volume ratio condition appears tight. This paper is based on the DPhil thesis of the first author.

Abstract:In this paper, we obtain a Li-Yau type gradient estimate with time dependent parameter for positive solutions of the heat equation, so that the Li-Yau type gradient estimate of Li-Xu are special cases of the estimate. We also obtain improvements of Davies' Li-Yau type gradient estimate. The argument is different with those of Li-Xu and Qian.

Abstract:In this paper we consider the gradient estimates on positive solutions to the following elliptic (Lichnerowicz) equation defined on a complete Riemannian manifold $(M,\,g)$: $$\Delta v + \mu v + a v^{p+1} +b v^{-q+1} =0,$$ where $p\geq-1$, $q\geq1$, $\mu$, $a$ and $b$ are real constants. In the case $\mu\geq0$ and $b\geq0$ or $\mu<0$ , $a>0$ and $b>0$ ($\mu$ has a lower bound), we employ the Nash-Moser iteration technique to obtain some refined gradient estimates of the solutions to the above equation, if $(M,\,g)$ satisfies $Ric \geq -(n-1)\kappa$ , where $n\geq3$ is the dimension of $M$ and $\kappa$ is a nonnegative constant, and $\mu$ , $a$ , $b$ , $p$ and $q$ satisfy some technique conditions. By the obtained gradient estimates we also derive some Liouville type theorems for the above equation under some suitable geometric and analysis conditions. As applications, we can derive some Cheng-Yau's type gradient estimates for solutions to the $n$-dimensional Einstein-scalar field Lichnerowicz equation where $n\geq3$.

Abstract:A non-homogeneous mixed local and nonlocal problem in divergence form is investigated for the validity of the global Calderón–Zygmund estimate for the weak solution to the Dirichlet problem of a nonlinear elliptic equation. We establish an optimal Calderón–Zygmund theory by finding not only a minimal regularity requirement on the mixed local and nonlocal operators but also a lower level of geometric assumption on the boundary of the domain for the global gradient estimate. More precisely, assuming that the nonlinearity of the local operator, whose prototype is the classical -Laplace operator with $1<p<\infty $ , is measurable in one variable and has a small BMO assumption for the other variables, while the singular kernel associated with the nonlocal -Laplace operator with $0<s<1<q<\infty $ is merely measurable, and that the boundary of the domain is sufficiently flat in Reifenberg sense, we prove that the gradient of the solution is as integrable as that of the associated non-homogeneous term in the divergence form. Our regularity theory reported here could be a nice addition for higher integrability of the gradient to the Hölder continuity of the gradient in De Filippis and Mingione (Math Ann https://doi.org/10.1007/s00208-022-02512-7, 2022) regarding mixed local and nonlocal problems.</s<1<q </p
