Abstract:We utilized Cu(2+) induced gold nanorod shortening in the presence of Na2S2O3 and NH3 for colorimetric sensing of copper ions. Compared with conventional methods, this method has good reproducibility, fast response time and very high sensitivity to Cu(2+). The sensor has a large dynamic range for Cu(2+) covering 5 nM to 500 mM with a detection limit of 1.6 nM, which is lower than previously reported for the colorimetric detection of copper ions.

Abstract:A highly sensitive and selective method is proposed for colorimetric detection of copper ions using 4-mercaptobenzoic acid (4-MBA) modified silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). The presence of Cu2+ induces the aggregation of 4-MBA modified AgNPs, this resulting in a color change from bright yellow to purple. The concentration of Cu2+ could be quantified by naked eyes or a UV–vis spectrometer. The absorbance ratio (A560nm/A393nm) is linear with the concentration of Cu2+ ranging from 1×10−7M to 1×10−4M with a coefficient of 0.998. The detection limit is as low as 2.5×10−8M. The proposed method could be successfully applied to determine Cu2+ in drinking water.

Abstract:Colorimetric probes based on gold nanoparticles (GNPs) with the combination of enzymatic inhibition have been constructed for the purpose of determination of Cu2+ ions. In this method, the enzyme alcohol oxidase (AO) catalyzes the oxidation of methanol to yield hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), which induces the growth of GNPs by reducing AuCl4− to Au on the surface of GNPs. The biocatalytic growth of GNPs is retarded by Cu2+ ions because the activity of AO is inhibited in the presence of Cu2+ ions, enabling the colorimetric and spectroscopic assay of Cu2+ ions by the plasmon absorption band of GNPs. The GNP-based probes also present very high selectivity to Cu2+ ions even when the interfering metal ions are 10-fold excess. Moreover, this sensor exhibits a wide linear range of 1–100 ng/mL, with a detection limit of 0.84 ng/mL. Analysis of the real water samples revealed the practical application prospect of the GNP-based probes. The combination of the biocatalytic growth of GNPs and the effective enzymatic inhibition make this sensor simple, sensitive and visible to the naked eye for heavy metal ions detection.

Abstract:A facile, rapid, selective and sensitive colorimetric method for the detection of copper ions (Cu2+) based on anti-aggregation of the glutathione-induced aggregated gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) was developed. Cu2+ can prevent the aggregation of AuNPs induced by glutathione (GSH) through catalyzing oxygen oxidation of GSH to oxidized glutathione (GSSG). In the presence of a specified amount of GSH, the aggregations of AuNPs decrease with increasing concentrations of Cu2+, which can be monitored by an ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometer or the naked eye. High sensitivity could be achieved for the detection of Cu2+ down to 20 nM. The method shows excellent selectivity toward Cu2+ over other metal ions, which can not prevent the GSH-induced aggregation of AuNPs even at a 20-fold molar excess. We further used the proposed method to selectively and sensitively detect sulfide anions in aqueous solution. The detection limit of sulfide anions (S2-) could reach 100 nM, which is one order of magnitude lower than that of GSH modified AuNPs-based colorimetric S2- assay.
Thermally treated bare gold nanoparticles for colorimetric sensing of copper ions

Abstract:We demonstrate a sensitive and rapid colorimetric assay for selective detection of copper ions based on the strong coordination between Cu(II) ions and the tetrahydroxyaurate anions [Au(OH) 4 ] − on the surface of thermally treated bare gold nanoparticles (GNPs). The method for making the unmodified GNPs is simple and results in a nanomaterial with a highly specific response to Cu(II). The thermal treatment of the bare GNPs and the recognition of Cu(II) ions is accomplished in a single step within 5 min. The presence of Cu(II) causes the color to change from red to purple-blue. The limit of detection (LOD) is 0.04 μM of Cu(II) when using UV–vis spectrometry and ratioing the absorbances at 650 and 515 nm, respectively. The method also is amenable to bare eye (visual) inspection and in this case has an LOD of 2.0 μM of Cu(II). Multicolor colorimetric assay for copper ion detection based on the etching of gold nanorods

Abstract:An effective, selective, and multicolor colorimetric assay for Cu2+ detection based on the regulation of peroxidase-like nanozyme-mediated etching of gold nanorods (Au NRs) is proposed. Cu2+-creatinine complex is selected as the nanozyme that exhibits excellent peroxidase-like activity even in the case of low concentration of Cu2+, which can catalyze 3,3,5,5-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) to produce oxidized TMB (TMB+) in the presence of hydrogen peroxide, and TMB+ is oxidized to generate TMB2+ after adding H+, and the TMB2+ can etch Au NRs. The determination of Cu2+ is achieved based on the blue shift of the longitudinal localized surface plasmon resonance peak of Au NRs. Under the optimal conditions, the developed colorimetric assay exhibits high sensitivity for the detection of Cu2+ (limit of detection is 0.034 μM) with a wide linear range of 0.05-4.0 μM (R2 = 0.987). The solution shows a rainbow-like color in response to the increase of Cu2+ concentration, which can realize the semi-quantitative detection of Cu2+ by naked eyes. In addition, the developed method exhibits excellent selectivity for Cu2+-detection. The established method was used for the determination of Cu2+ in lake water, soil, and normal human serum with satisfactory recovery of spiked samples.

Abstract:Nano-gold( NG) was electrochemically deposited onto an ordered mesoporous carbon( OMC)modified glassy carbon electrode surface. L-Cysteine( L-Cys) was self-assembled to the NG modified electrode surface to fabricate an ordered mesoporous carbon / nano-gold / L-cysteine( OMC / NG / L-Cys) modified electrode.The structure of OMC and the morphology of OMC / NG / L-Cys modified electrodes were characterized by transmission electron microscope and scanning electron microscope,respectively. Electrochemical behavior of copper( II) at the modified electrode was investigated. Experimental conditions for copper( II) determination were optimized. Under the optimized conditions,peak current was found to be linearly related with copper( II)concentration in the range of 0. 05 ~ 6. 0 μmol / L with a detection limit of 0. 30 nmol / L( S / N = 3). The developed method was used to determine copper( II) in river water samples,recoveries were in the range from92. 7% to 101. 6%.

Abstract:In this report, we present a new method for visual detection of Pb2+. Gold nanoparticles (Au-NPs) were synthesized in one step at room temperature, using gallic acid (GA) as reducer and stabilizer. Pb2+ is added during the gold nanoparticle formation. Analysis of Pb2+ is conducted by a dual strategy, namely, colorimetry and spectrometry. During Au-NPs synthesis, addition of Pb2+ would lead to formation of Pb-GA complex, which can induce the aggregation of newly-formed small unstable gold nanoclusters. Consequently, colorimetric detection of trace Pb2+ can be realized. As the Pb2+ concentration increases, the color turns from red-wine to purple, and finally blue. This method offers a sensitive linear correlation between the shift of the absorption band (Δλ) and logarithm of Pb2+ concentration ranging from 5.0 × 10−8 to 1.0 × 10−6 M with a linear fit coefficient of 0.998, and a high selectivity for Pb2+ detection with a low detection limit down to 2.5 × 10−8 M.
Dithiothreitol-capped Fluorescent Gold Nanoclusters: an Efficient Probe for Detection of Copper(ii) Ions in Aqueous Solution.

Abstract:We report here a Green method for the synthesis of fluorescent gold nanoclusters using dithiothreitol (DTT) as both a capping agent and reducing agent at 22 °C and pH 8. The physical and chemical properties of the synthesized AuNCs@DTT were studied by TEM and UV-vis absorption, fluorescence, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. AuNCs@DTT recognizes cupric ions with high selectivity and sensitivity, which allows this material to act as a copper(II) sensor in aqueous solution. A linear relationship was observed between the fluorescence intensity of the DTT capped gold nanoclusters and the concentration of copper(II) ions, in the range of 0-60 μM with a detection limit of 80 nM. The copper content in serum was also analyzed by using this copper sensor. It was shown that data obtained using the proposed method was comparable to values obtained by the traditional colorimetric method. This technique represents an alternative method for the determination of serum copper in clinical diagnosis especially for those laboratories which lack expensive analytical facilities.

Abstract:We have developed a colorimetric assay for the highly sensitive and selective detection of Cd2+ using gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) cofunctionalized with 6-mercaptonicotinic acid (MNA) and L-Cysteine (L-Cys) through the formation of an Au-S bond. In the presence of Cd2+, the aggregation of functionalized AuNPs occurred by means of a metal-ligand interaction that led to visible color changes. Most importantly, cofunctionalized AuNPs had better responses for Cd2+ than that functionalized by either MNA or L-Cys. Cd2+ could be detected by the colorimetric response of AuNPs that could be detected by the naked eye or a UV-vis spectrophotometer. The absorbance ratio (A(620)/A(523)) was linear with the Cd2+ concentration in the range of 2.0 x 10(-7) to 1.7 x 10(-6) M. Under optimum conditions (2.0 x 10(-5) M MNA, 2.0 x 10(-6) M L-Cys and 0.020 M NaCl at pH 10.0), the detection limit (3 sigma) of Cd2+ could be as low as 1.0 x 10(-7) M. Interference experiments showed that Pb2+ and Cu2+ caused a slight interference for Cd2+ determination while other metal ions caused no interference. The proposed method was successfully applied to determine the concentration of Cd2+ in environmental samples (lake water).
Dual-emission ratio fluorescent probes based on carbon dots and gold nanoclusters for visual and fluorescent detection of copper ions

Abstract:Blue carbon dots (BCDs) and red gold nanoclusters modified by bovine serum albumin (BSA-Au NCs) were selected as luminescent nanomaterials, and the nanohybrid materials were successfully prepared and applied to the fluorescent measurement of copper ions. The prepared ratio fluorescent probe has two emission peaks near 452 and 654 nm under an excitation of 330 nm. The fluorescence intensity was gradually quenched because Au NCs was aggregated in the presence of Cu2+, resulting in a gradation of the fluorescent color from red to pink to purple to blue for visual detection. BCDs have almost the same fluorescence intensity due to their light stability and chemical inertness to Cu2+ and serve as a background reference in the sensing system. Under the optimal condition, the detection limit (LOD) is 16 nM, the linear range is 0.05–1.85 μM, and the coefficient of determination R2 is 0.9987 for copper determination. Compared with other single probes, the ratio fluorescent probe in the current study has good water solubility, low cytotoxicity, and is easy to synthesize. The nanoprobe provides a high-quality and sensitive visible light platform for monitoring copper ions.

Abstract:The authors describe a silicon nanoparticle-based fluorometric method for sensitive and selective detection of Cu2+. It is based on the catalytic action of Cu2+ on the oxidation of cysteine (Cys) by oxygen to form cystine and the by-product H2O2. The generated H2O2 is catalytically decomposed by Cu2+ to generate hydroxyl radicals which oxidize and destroy the surface of SiNPs. As a result, the blue fluorescence of the SiNPs is quenched. The method has excellent selectivity due to the dual catalytic effects of Cu2+, which is much better than most previously reported nanomaterial-based assays for Cu2+. Under the optimal conditions, the method has low detection limit (29 nM) and a linear response in a concentration range from 0.05 μM to 15 μM. The method has been successfully applied to the determination of Cu2+ in spiked real water samples, and the results agreed well with those obtained by the Chinese National Standard method (GB/T 7475-1987; AAS).
Thy-AuNP-AgNP Hybrid Systems for Colorimetric Determination of Copper (II) Ions Using UV-Vis Spectroscopy and Smartphone-Based Detection

Abstract:A colorimetric probe based on a hybrid sensing system of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), and thymine (Thy) was developed for easy and rapid detection of copper (II) ions (Cu2+) in solution. The underlying principle of this probe was the Cu2+-triggered aggregation of the nanoparticle components. Color change of the sensing solution (from red to purple) was clearly observed with naked eyes. The experimental parameters, including pH and concentration of tris buffer, thymine concentration and AgNP dilution ratios, were investigated and optimized. Once optimized, the limits of detection were found to be 1, 0.09 and 0.03 ppm for naked eyes, smartphone application and UV-vis spectrophotometer, respectively. Furthermore, determination of Cu2+ was accomplished within 15 min under ambient conditions. For quantitative analysis, the linearity of detection was observed through ranges of 0.09–0.5 and 0.03–0.5 ppm using smartphone application and UV-vis spectrophotometer, respectively, conforming to the World Health Organization guideline for detection of copper at concentrations < 2 ppm in water. This developed hybrid colorimetric probe exhibited preferential selectivity toward Cu2+, even when assessed in the presence of other metal ions (Al3+, Ca2+, Pb2+, Mn2+, Mg2+, Zn2+, Fe3+, Ni2+, Co2+, Hg2+ and Cd2+). The developed procedure was also successfully applied to quantification of Cu2+ in real water samples. The recovery and relative standard deviation (RSD) values from real water sample analysis were in the ranges of 70.14–103.59 and 3.21–17.63%, respectively. Our findings demonstrated a successful development and implementation of the Thy-AuNP-AgNP hybrid sensing system for rapid, simple and portable Cu2+ detection in water samples using a spectrophotometer or a smartphone-based device.

Abstract:Most of the copper (II) fluorescent probes are based on the measurement of fluorescence at a single wavelength, which may be influenced by variations in the sample environment. To the end, the ratiometric fluorescent measurement, which involves the simultaneous measurement of two fluorescence signals at different wavelengths followed by calculation of their intensity ratio, can effectively eliminate the adverse effects on fluorescence signals and give greater precision to the data analysis relative to single-channel detection. In this work, we prepared novel luminescent gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) utilizing vitamin B2 (riboflavin) as stabilizer by a simple, rapid and one-pot green (low-toxicity materials use) procedure. The as-prepared riboflavin-AuNCs (Ri-AuNCs) solution can be luminescent exhibiting two fluorescence emission peaks at 530 nm and around 840 nm with excitation at 375 nm, however, in the presence of Cu(2+), the fluorescence of the Ri-AuNCs was found to be quenched at around 840 nm and enhanced at 530 nm by Cu(2+). The resultant ratiometric fluorescent response can provide a novel sensory probe for the determination of Cu(2+). The present probe had excellent selectivity in the presence of several cations. The probe revealed a detection limit of 0.9 μM of Cu(2+). Moreover, our proposed probe can reversibly switch between the "on" and "off" states through the addition of Cu(2+) and EDTA, which is reusable in practical application. Results and method reported here provide a unique strategy for performance of ratiometric assays demonstrated with a AuNCs-based fluorescent probe, which expands the application of AuNCs.
A novel polypeptide-modified fluorescent gold nanoclusters for copper ion detection

Abstract:Biomolecule-functionalized fluorescent gold nanocluster (AuNCs) have attracted a lot of attention due to good biocompatibility, stable physicochemical properties and considerable cost advantages. Inappropriate concentration of Cu2+ may cause a variety of diseases. In this study, AuNCs were synthesized in alkaline aqueous solution using bovine serum albumin (BSA) as a template. And then, the peptide CCYWDAHRDY was coupled to AuNCs. Furthermore, the fluorescence of synthesized CCYWDAHRDY-AuNCs response to Cu2+ was evaluated. As the results shown that the CCYWDAHRDY-AuNCs can sensitively detect Cu2+. After adding Cu2+ to the probe system, the fluorescence of the CCYWDAHRDY-AuNCs was quenched. The detection conditions were at pH 6 and 30 °C for 10 min, the linear relationship between Cu2+ concentration and fluorescence intensity were good in the range of 0.1 ~ 4.2 μmol/L. The regression equation was y = - 105.9x + 693.68, the linear correlation coefficient is 0.997, and the minimum detection limit was 52 nmol/L.

Abstract:We report a novel and environmentally friendly fluorescent probe for detecting copper ion (Cu2+) using glutathione (GS)-protected Au nanoclusters (GS-Au NCs). The fluorescence-based sensing behavior by GS-Au NCs toward metal ions was investigated in buffered aqueous media. Among the metal ions studied, Cu2+, Hg2+ and Pb2+ were found to efficiently quench the fluorescence emission of GS-Au NCs. In differentiation of Cu2+ and Hg2+ (or Pb2+), we found that (1) in the presence of Pb2+, the GS-Au NCs solution first appeared turbidity, but with ethylenediaminetetraacetate (EDTA) added to the solution, the fluorescence recovered and the turbidity disappeared; (2) in the presence of Hg2+, EDTA could not recover the quenched fluorescence of GS-Au CNs by Hg2+, which is in contrast with Pb2+ and Cu2+. The Cu2+ detection limit was determined to be approximately 86nM based on the fluorescence quenching and linear fluorescence response in the Cu2+ concentration range 1.00×10−7 to 6.25×10−6mol/L. The high sensitivity of 86nM Cu2+ and selectivity to Cu2+ among 17 types of metal cations make GS-Au NCs a good candidate for fluorescent sensors for Cu2+.

Abstract:Accurate detection of copper ions is crucial since it is an essential trace element. Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) were prepared from apricot leaves using a hydrothermal method. These CQDs, which generated a reference signal, were combined with glutathione-bound gold nanoclusters (GSH-AuNCs) synthesized by the reduction of chloroauric acid to form a ratiometric fluorescent probe. The probe exhibited fluorescence emission at 450 nm and 568 nm. The determination of Cu(II) was performed through visual analysis of the color change and the intensity ratio ( I 450 / I 568 ) of the emission peaks. Orange fluorescent GSH-AuNCs responded to Cu(II) with fluorescence, and the blue fluorescent CQDs were chemically inert. The probes changed color from pink to purple to blue in response to different concentrations of Cu(II). The linear range of the fluorescence probe for Cu(II) was 0 to 120 μmol/L, and the limit of detection (LOD) was 0.65 μmol/L. This study has demonstrated that the probe provided good selectivity for detecting Cu(II) in water and has potential practical application.

Abstract:A novel label-free strategy is demonstrated for the amplified detection of copper ions (Cu2+) on the basis of Fenton reaction and unmodified gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). AuNPs are known to stabilise in the presence of single-stranded DNA (ssDNA), which prevents the salt-induced aggregation of AuNPs in solution because of electrostatic repulsion. However, in the presence of a Fenton reagent, Cu2+ catalyses the Fenton reaction to generate hydroxyl free radicals, which cut the ssDNA into different sequence fragments or even single bases to induce AuNP aggregation along with a red-to-blue colour change. Cu2+ is qualitatively and quantitatively detected through this phenomenon, and Cu2+ recycling may amplify the signal transduction based on Fenton reaction with unlabelled sensing strategies. A linear calibration of A700/A525 versus Cu2+ concentration is obtained within 0.1–10μM, along with a detection limit of 23nM and relative standard deviation (RSD) of 4.1% (1μM). Moreover, the sensing system exhibits excellent sensitivity and selectivity for Cu2+, with quantitative spike-recoveries from 88% to 116% in environment water samples.
