Abstract:A highly sensitive and selective method is proposed for colorimetric detection of copper ions using 4-mercaptobenzoic acid (4-MBA) modified silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). The presence of Cu2+ induces the aggregation of 4-MBA modified AgNPs, this resulting in a color change from bright yellow to purple. The concentration of Cu2+ could be quantified by naked eyes or a UV–vis spectrometer. The absorbance ratio (A560nm/A393nm) is linear with the concentration of Cu2+ ranging from 1×10−7M to 1×10−4M with a coefficient of 0.998. The detection limit is as low as 2.5×10−8M. The proposed method could be successfully applied to determine Cu2+ in drinking water.

Abstract:A fast, simple, sensitive, and selective colorimetric method for the detection of Cu2+ was developed using Prussian blue/Turnbull’s blue nanoparticles (PBNPs/TBNPs) as the probe. The colorimetric sensor is based on the following principle. Cu2+ can induce the aggregation of L-cysteine (L-cys) modified-PBNPs/TBNPs (L-cys-PBNPs/TBNPs), resulting in an obvious red shift of its maximum absorption peak. Thus, the concentration of Cu2+ can be determined based on the peak shift in the UV–Vis spectra. The optimal pH, concentration of L-cys, reaction temperature between L-cys-PBNPs/TBNPs and Cu2+, the formation time of L-cys-PBNPs/TBNPs, and the reaction time between L-cys-PBNPs/TBNPs and Cu2+ of the method were determined to be pH 4.5, 2.0 mM, 20 °C, 5.0 min, and 2.0 min, respectively. A good linearity for the colorimetric determination of Cu2+ at the range of 0.25–2.5 μM (R2 = 0.986) was obtained, with a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.12 μM. Moreover, the negligible response of other metal ions demonstrates good selectivity and specificity of the sensor. In addition, the method was employed in the detection of Cu2+ in lake water samples, and the spiked recoveries are in the range of 96.7–106.6% with a relative standard deviation less than 7.4%. Therefore, the colorimetric method is applicable for Cu2+ detection in real water samples of high sensitivity and selectivity.

Abstract:Colorimetric probes based on gold nanoparticles (GNPs) with the combination of enzymatic inhibition have been constructed for the purpose of determination of Cu2+ ions. In this method, the enzyme alcohol oxidase (AO) catalyzes the oxidation of methanol to yield hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), which induces the growth of GNPs by reducing AuCl4− to Au on the surface of GNPs. The biocatalytic growth of GNPs is retarded by Cu2+ ions because the activity of AO is inhibited in the presence of Cu2+ ions, enabling the colorimetric and spectroscopic assay of Cu2+ ions by the plasmon absorption band of GNPs. The GNP-based probes also present very high selectivity to Cu2+ ions even when the interfering metal ions are 10-fold excess. Moreover, this sensor exhibits a wide linear range of 1–100 ng/mL, with a detection limit of 0.84 ng/mL. Analysis of the real water samples revealed the practical application prospect of the GNP-based probes. The combination of the biocatalytic growth of GNPs and the effective enzymatic inhibition make this sensor simple, sensitive and visible to the naked eye for heavy metal ions detection.

A colorimetric assay for ultrasensitive detection of copper (II) ions based on pH-dependent formation of heavily doped molybdenum oxide nanosheets

Abstract:Here we report a simple and low-cost colorimetric assay for ultrasensitive detection of copper (II) ions (Cu2+) based on pH-dependent formation of plasmonic MoO3-x nanosheets. The reaction between ascorbic acid (AA) and Cu2+ gives birth to hydrogen ions, which remarkably promotes the reduction of MoO3 nanosheets by AA to form oxygen vacancies-rich MoO3-x nanosheets that increase the free carrier concentration, generating a strong local surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) absorption. The Cu2+-triggered LSPR is utilized for development of the colorimetric assay. Under the optimal experimental conditions, this colorimetric assay can be used for selective detection of Cu2+, and the limit of detection is 0.8 nM, which is lower than that of most of the reported methods. Additionally, the present colorimetric assay has also been successfully employed for Cu2+ determination in real serum and human hair samples with satisfactory recoveries ranging from 96% to 108%.
Ratiometric fluorescent sensor for visual determination of copper ions and alkaline phosphatase based on carbon quantum dots and gold nanoclusters

Abstract:In this work, a novel ratiometric fluorescent sensor, based on carbon dots (CDs) and gold nanoclusters (AuNCs), is developed for highly sensitive and selective visual colorimetric detection of Cu2+ and alkaline phosphatase (ALP). The ratiometric fluorescent sensor was synthesized by covalently linking 11-mercaptoundecanoic acid (11-MUA)-stabilized AuNCs to the surface of amino-functionalized CD/SiO2 nanoparticles. The red fluorescence of the AuNCs can be quenched by Cu2+ owing to coordination between Cu2+ and 11-MUA; however, the blue emission of the CDs was insensitive to Cu2+ owing to the protective silica shell. The quenching of the AuNCs' fluorescence returned when PPi was added because of the higher affinity between Cu2+ and PPi than that between Cu2+ and 11-MUA. In the presence of ALP, PPi was catalytically hydrolyzed into phosphate (Pi), which showed a much weaker affinity for Cu2+. Thus, Cu2+ ions were released, and the fluorescence of the AuNCs was quenched once more. Based on this principle, Cu2+ and ALP could be simultaneously detected. The developed ratiometric fluorescent sensor could detect Cu2+ over a range from 0.025 to 4 μM with a detection limit of 0.013 μM and ALP over a range from 0.12 to 15 U/L with a detection limit of 0.05 U/L. The present method was successfully applied for the detection of Cu2+ and ALP in real water samples and in human serum samples, respectively. This ratiometric fluorescent approach may provide a highly sensitive and accurate platform for visual Cu2+ and ALP sensing in environmental monitoring and medical diagnosis.

Abstract:The concept that HLA‐linked immune response genes may influence survival of patients with malignant disease has been investigated by performing HLA typing on a series of 150 patients with acute myelogenous leukemia. Patients with A1 and B8 and/or A2 and B12 survive longer than patients without either of these pairs of antigens in association. However, after correction of the statistical probability for the number of A and B locus combinations theoretically possible, these differences are not statistically significant. Clarification of this must await independent analysis of other series and more direct approaches to the study of immune response genes in man.

Abstract:We utilized Cu(2+) induced gold nanorod shortening in the presence of Na2S2O3 and NH3 for colorimetric sensing of copper ions. Compared with conventional methods, this method has good reproducibility, fast response time and very high sensitivity to Cu(2+). The sensor has a large dynamic range for Cu(2+) covering 5 nM to 500 mM with a detection limit of 1.6 nM, which is lower than previously reported for the colorimetric detection of copper ions.

Abstract:Heavy metal pollution has received great attentions in recent years. The traditional methods for heavy metal detection rely on the expensive laboratory instruments and need time-consuming preparation steps; therefore, it is urgent to develop quick and highly sensitive new technologies for heavy metal detection. The colorimetric method based on the gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) features with simple operation, high sensitivity and low cost, therefore, enabling it widely concerned and used in the environmental monitoring, food safety and chemical and biological sensing fields. This work developed a simple, rapid and highly sensitive strategy based on the Fenton reaction and unmodified AuNPs for the detection of Cu2+ in water samples. The hydroxyl radical ((OH)-O-center dot) generated by the Fenton reaction between the Cu2+ and sodium ascorbate (SA) oxidized the single stranded DNA (ssDNA) attached on the AuNPs surface into variable sequence fragments. The cleavage of ssDNA induced the aggregation of AuNPs in a certain salt solution, therefore, resulting in the changes on the absorbance of solution. The assay conditions were optimized to be pH value of 7.9, 11 mg . L-1 ssDNA, 8 mmol . L-1 SA and 70 mmol . L-1 NaCl. Results showed that the absorbance ratio values at the wavelengths of 700 and 525 nm (A(700)/A(525)) were linearly correlated with the Cu2+ concentrations. The linear detection range was 0.1 similar to 10. 0 mu mol . L-1 with a detection limit of 24 nmol . L-1 (3 sigma). Spiked recoveries ranged from 87%similar to 120% in three sorts of water, including drinking water, tap water and lake water, which confirmed that the potentials of the proposed assay for Cu2+ detection in reality.

Abstract:A novel label-free strategy is demonstrated for the amplified detection of copper ions (Cu2+) on the basis of Fenton reaction and unmodified gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). AuNPs are known to stabilise in the presence of single-stranded DNA (ssDNA), which prevents the salt-induced aggregation of AuNPs in solution because of electrostatic repulsion. However, in the presence of a Fenton reagent, Cu2+ catalyses the Fenton reaction to generate hydroxyl free radicals, which cut the ssDNA into different sequence fragments or even single bases to induce AuNP aggregation along with a red-to-blue colour change. Cu2+ is qualitatively and quantitatively detected through this phenomenon, and Cu2+ recycling may amplify the signal transduction based on Fenton reaction with unlabelled sensing strategies. A linear calibration of A700/A525 versus Cu2+ concentration is obtained within 0.1–10μM, along with a detection limit of 23nM and relative standard deviation (RSD) of 4.1% (1μM). Moreover, the sensing system exhibits excellent sensitivity and selectivity for Cu2+, with quantitative spike-recoveries from 88% to 116% in environment water samples.
A Novel Phosphatidylserine-Functionalized AuNP for the Visual Detection of Free Copper Ions with High Sensitivity and Specificity.

Abstract:In this paper, we have reported on novel phosphatidylserine-functionalized AuNPs (gold nanoparticles) for the visual detection of Cu2+ by employing phosphatidylserine for Cu2+ recognition and AuNPs for signal generation. The phosphatidylserine (1,2-dioleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phospho-l-serine, DOPS) was covalently assembled on the AuNP surface to obtain DOPS-functionalized AuNPs. It was demonstrated that DOPS-functionalized AuNPs could specifically bind Cu2+ and lead to the aggregation of AuNPs, which gave rise to a colour change from wine-red to blue and a new absorption band around 650 nm. This provides a sensing platform for the simple, rapid and field portable colorimetric detection of Cu2+. By using the sensing platform, a selective and sensitive visual biosensor for the detection of Cu2+ was developed. The proposed biosensor has outstanding analytical advantages such as good stability, relatively high sensitivity, low cost and short analysis time. It can be used to detect concentrations of Cu2+ as low as 30 μM in river water by observation with the naked eye and of 1.55 μM Cu2+ in river water by UV-visible spectrophotometry, within 10 min and with a recovery of 98-103% and a relative standard deviation (RSD) < 4% (n = 6). The proposed biosensor is promising for on-site detection of trace Cu2+ in clinical diagnosis or environmental monitoring.

Abstract:We have developed a colorimetric assay for the highly sensitive and selective detection of Cd2+ using gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) cofunctionalized with 6-mercaptonicotinic acid (MNA) and L-Cysteine (L-Cys) through the formation of an Au-S bond. In the presence of Cd2+, the aggregation of functionalized AuNPs occurred by means of a metal-ligand interaction that led to visible color changes. Most importantly, cofunctionalized AuNPs had better responses for Cd2+ than that functionalized by either MNA or L-Cys. Cd2+ could be detected by the colorimetric response of AuNPs that could be detected by the naked eye or a UV-vis spectrophotometer. The absorbance ratio (A(620)/A(523)) was linear with the Cd2+ concentration in the range of 2.0 x 10(-7) to 1.7 x 10(-6) M. Under optimum conditions (2.0 x 10(-5) M MNA, 2.0 x 10(-6) M L-Cys and 0.020 M NaCl at pH 10.0), the detection limit (3 sigma) of Cd2+ could be as low as 1.0 x 10(-7) M. Interference experiments showed that Pb2+ and Cu2+ caused a slight interference for Cd2+ determination while other metal ions caused no interference. The proposed method was successfully applied to determine the concentration of Cd2+ in environmental samples (lake water).
Bisubstrate multi-colorimetric assay based on the peroxidase-like activity of Cu 2+ -triethylamine complex for copper ion detection

Abstract:A bisubstrate colorimetric system was developed for rapid and multi-color assay of copper ion (Cu 2+ ). Cu 2+ -triethylamine (Cu 2+ -TEA) complex with the peroxidase-like activity can catalyze the 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) to produce oxidized TMB (TMB + , color in blue) and dopamine (DA) to oxidized DA (oxDA, color in orange) in the presence of hydrogen peroxide, which can obtain a three-color colorimetric result due to the couple of complementary colors of blue and orange. The determination of Cu 2+ is achieved based on the absorbance value at 460 nm of the composite peak of TMB + and oxDA. After systematically optimizing the reaction conditions, the developed bisubstrate colorimetric method exhibits high sensitivity for the detection of Cu 2+ (limit of quantitation (LOQ) is 0.0625 μM) with a wide linear range of 0.0625–8.0 μM (R 2 = 0.991). Meanwhile, the reaction solution shows an orange, brown, and green color change with the increase in Cu 2+ concentration, which can realize the semi-quantitatively detection by the naked eyes. Furthermore, TMB was also used as a single substrate for Cu 2+ detection with a linear range of 0.5–9.0 μM (R 2 = 0.994), and the LOQ is determined to be 0.5 μM. The LOQ of bisubstrate system is 8 times lower than that of single substrate system, indicating a higher sensitivity for the detection of Cu 2+ using the bisubstrate colorimetric system. In addition, the developed bisubstrate colorimetric method exhibits excellent selectivity for Cu 2+ detection, which was applied in the determination of Cu 2+ in lake water and soil samples, and satisfactory spiked recoveries were obtained.

Abstract:Copper is an essential element for life and constitutes copper proteins, and attends life activities in human body. However, an excess of copper is poisonous, and can cause hepatitis, gastroenteritis and pneumonia. copper enters into biosphere from ores by weathering and erosion and exists in water in the form of a divalent copper ion. Therefore, it is necessary to detect copper ions in an ultrasensitive and quantitative way. Herein, a dual-functional DNAzymatic visual biosensor was developed, optimized and validated to detect divalent copper ions sensitively and selectively in tap water. In the method, dual DNAzymes with different functions were designed within one biosensor. One DNAzyme was Cu2+-dependent cleaving DNAzyme, which could be cleaved by Cu2+ for signal recognition. The other one was G-quadruplex DNAzyme, which was induced by terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase (TdT) for "one-to-multiplex" signal amplification and output. In the middle of two steps, the exponential amplification reaction (EXPAR) was applied to amplify the recognitive signal exponentially. Under optimized conditions, Cu(2+ c)ould be selectively observed with the naked eyes with the detection limit (LOD) of 10 pmol/L and with the microplate reader with LOD of 7.6 pmol/L in about 2 h. Furthermore, Cu2+ in the concentration range of 10 pmol/L-200 pmol/L in tap water samples could be discriminated by naked eyes. The platform provides an ultrasensitive and colorimetric detective tool for the analysis of trace Cu2+ in tap water with high specificity, and will have broad application prospect in many fields.

Abstract:Copper plays a key role in the human body; meanwhile, excess Cu2+ ions can result in various diseases. Nanoclusters (NCs) are often used to measure Cu2+ ions, but there are two difficulties. On the one hand, a single probe of NCs is easily affected by environmental factors. On the other hand, it is difficult to mask the interference of Pb2+ ions and Cd2+ ions in the process of detecting Cu2+ ions. As a new type of quantum dots (QDs), tungsten disulfide quantum dots (WS2-QDs) have some advantages of simple synthesis and stable luminescence properties. Stable WS2-QDs with blue fluorescence are used as a reference probe, while gold silver nanoclusters (AuAgNCs) with red fluorescence are used as a response probe. A ratiometric fluorescent sensor was constructed by mixing the two styles of fluorescent probes, which is abbreviated as NCs/QDs. This nano-sensor can be used to detect the concentration of Cu2+ ions, in which the fluorescence of QDs does not change significantly, while the fluorescence of NCs can be quenched by Cu2+ ions. The concentration of Cu2+ ions can be determined as low as 0.12 μM with a linear range from 0.3 to 3 μM. The common interference caused by Pb2+ and Cd2+ ions can be eliminated by the phosphate buffer solution (PBS). This sensor was used to detect the concentration of Cu2+ in river water with satisfactory results.

Abstract:A facile, rapid, selective and sensitive colorimetric method for the detection of copper ions (Cu2+) based on anti-aggregation of the glutathione-induced aggregated gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) was developed. Cu2+ can prevent the aggregation of AuNPs induced by glutathione (GSH) through catalyzing oxygen oxidation of GSH to oxidized glutathione (GSSG). In the presence of a specified amount of GSH, the aggregations of AuNPs decrease with increasing concentrations of Cu2+, which can be monitored by an ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometer or the naked eye. High sensitivity could be achieved for the detection of Cu2+ down to 20 nM. The method shows excellent selectivity toward Cu2+ over other metal ions, which can not prevent the GSH-induced aggregation of AuNPs even at a 20-fold molar excess. We further used the proposed method to selectively and sensitively detect sulfide anions in aqueous solution. The detection limit of sulfide anions (S2-) could reach 100 nM, which is one order of magnitude lower than that of GSH modified AuNPs-based colorimetric S2- assay.

Abstract:An electrochemical sensor based on gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) modified with rhodamine B hydrazide (RBH) (AuNPs-RBH) was developed and applied in the highly sensitive and selective detection of Cu2+ in water. RBH molecules were bounded onto the surface of AuNPs via the strong interaction between the amino groups and Au NPs. The chemical structure variations were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and fluoresence spectroscopy. Additionally, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy was used to determine Cu2+ ions in an aqueous solution with the developed AuNPs-RBH-based electrochemical sensor. Results show that the fabricated sensor exhibits good electrochemical performance because of the presence of Au NPs and high affinity with the Cu2+ resulting from the strong coordination chemistry between Cu2+ and RBH. The as-developed sensor towards detecting Cu2+ has a detection limitation of 12.5 fM within the concentration range of 0.1 pM-1 nM by using the electrochemical impedance technique. It also displays excellent selectivity, regeneration, stability, and practicability for Cu2+ detection. Therefore, the new strategy of the RBH-based electrochemical sensor exhibits great potential application in environment treatment and protection. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
A Facile Colorimetric Method for Ultra-rapid and Sensitive Detection of Copper Ions in Water

Abstract:It is of great meaning to develop a facile, reliable and sensitive method to detect copper ions in water. In the study, a facile method has been developed for rapid and sensitive detection of Cu 2+ . An interesting phenomenon has been observed that 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) ethanol solution can be extremely fast passed from colorless to yellow once Cu 2+ ions are added. It easily occurs to us that Cu 2+ can be quantitatively determined via the absorbance at 904 nm of the color changed TMB solution. More importantly, some specific anions (Cl − , Br − ) can significantly enhance the absorption intensity. Under the optimized experimental conditions, this method exhibits a good linear response range for Cu 2+ from 0.5 to 100 μM, with the detection limit of 93 nM. Moreover, the possible detection principle has been explored. It is worth mentioning that the color change can be clearly observed by naked eyes for the detection of 1 μM Cu 2+ , which is far below the threshold limit of Cu 2+ in drinking water suggested by World Health Organization. It means that this method possess great promise for on-site Cu 2+ detection.

Abstract:We demonstrate a sensitive and rapid colorimetric assay for selective detection of copper ions based on the strong coordination between Cu(II) ions and the tetrahydroxyaurate anions [Au(OH) 4 ] − on the surface of thermally treated bare gold nanoparticles (GNPs). The method for making the unmodified GNPs is simple and results in a nanomaterial with a highly specific response to Cu(II). The thermal treatment of the bare GNPs and the recognition of Cu(II) ions is accomplished in a single step within 5 min. The presence of Cu(II) causes the color to change from red to purple-blue. The limit of detection (LOD) is 0.04 μM of Cu(II) when using UV–vis spectrometry and ratioing the absorbances at 650 and 515 nm, respectively. The method also is amenable to bare eye (visual) inspection and in this case has an LOD of 2.0 μM of Cu(II). Figure Due to the strong coordination of Cu(II) ions with the tetrahydroxyaurate anions [Au(OH) 4 ] - on the thermally treated bare GNPs, Cu(II) can directly induce the aggregation of the GNPs, resulting in an obvious color change from wine-red to purple-blue.
