Abstract:This Letter proposes a novel quantitative phase-imaging approach by optically encoding light fields into a complementary image pair followed by computational reconstruction. We demonstrate that the axial intensity derivative for phase recovery can be well estimated by a coded-aperture image pair without z axial scanning. The experimental results demonstrate that our approach can achieve higher accuracy and robustness compared with conventional transport-of-intensity equation (TIE) based approaches under partial coherence illumination. Abstract:High-speed quantitative phase and amplitude imaging methods have led to numerous biological discoveries. For general samples, phase retrieval from a single-diffraction pattern has been an algorithmic and experimental challenge. Here we present a quantitative phase and amplitude imaging method applying an efficient support constraint to yield a rapid algorithmic convergence due to the removal of the twin image and spatial shift ambiguities. Compared to previous complex-valued imaging, our method is lenslet-free and relies neither on assumption based on sample sparsity nor interferometric measurements. Our method provides a robust method for imaging in materials and biological science, while its rapid imaging capability will benefit the investigation of dynamical processes.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a phaseless terahertz coded-aperture imaging (PTCAI) method by using a single incoherent detector or an incoherent detection array. We at first analyze and model the system architecture, derive the matrix imaging equation, and then study the phase retrieval techniques to reconstruct the original target with high resolution. Numerical experiments are performed and the results show that the proposed method can significantly reduce the system complexity in the receiving process while maintaining high resolution imaging capability. Furthermore, the approach of using incoherent detection array instead of single detector is capable of decreasing the encoding and sampling times, and therefore helps to improve the imaging frame rate. In our future research, the method proposed in this paper will be experimentally tested and validated, and high-speed PTCAI at nearly real-time frame rates will be the main work.
Coded aperture correlation holographic microscope for single-shot quantitative phase imaging with extended field of view

Abstract:Recently, a method of recording holograms of coherently illuminated three-dimensional scene without two-wave interference was demonstrated. The method is an extension of the coded aperture correlation holography from incoherent to coherent illumination. Although this method is practical for some tasks, it is not capable of imaging phase objects, a capability that is an important benefit of coherent holography. The present work addresses this limitation by using the same type of coded phase masks in a modified Mach-Zehnder interferometer. We show that by several comparative parameters, the coded aperture-based phase imaging is superior to the equivalent open aperture-based method. As an additional merit of the coded aperture approach, a framework for increasing the system's field of view is formulated and demonstrated for both amplitude and phase objects. The combination of high sensitivity quantitative phase microscope with increased field of view in a single camera shot holographic apparatus, has immense potential to serve as the preferred tool for examination of biological tissues and micro-organisms.

Abstract:Fourier ptychography (FP) is an enabling imaging technique that produces high-resolution complex-valued images with extended field coverages. However, when FP images a phase object with any specific spatial frequency, the captured images contain only constant values, rendering the recovery of the corresponding linear phase ramp impossible. This challenge is not unique to FP but also affects other common microscopy techniques -- a rather counterintuitive outcome given their widespread use in phase imaging. The underlying issue originates from the non-uniform phase transfer characteristic inherent in microscope systems, which impedes the conversion of object wavefields into discernible intensity variations. To address this challenge, we present spatially-coded Fourier ptychography (scFP), a new method that synergizes FP with spatial-domain coded detection for true quantitative phase imaging. In scFP, a flexible and detachable coded thin film is attached atop the image sensor in a regular FP setup. The spatial modulation of this thin film ensures a uniform phase response across the entire synthetic bandwidth. It improves reconstruction quality and corrects refractive index underestimation issues prevalent in conventional FP and related tomographic implementations. The inclusion of the coded thin film further adds a new dimension of measurement diversity in the spatial domain. The development of scFP is expected to catalyse new research directions and applications for phase imaging, emphasizing the need for true quantitative accuracy with uniform frequency response.

Abstract: Coded aperture imaging systems have recently shown great success in recovering scene depth and extending the depth-of-field. The ideal pattern, however, would have to serve two conflicting purposes: 1) be broadband to ensure robust deconvolution and 2) has sufficient zero-crossings for a high depth discrepancy. This paper presents a simple but effective scene-adaptive coded aperture solution to bridge this gap. We observe that the geometric structures in a natural scene often exhibit only a few edge directions, and the successive frames are closely correlated. Therefore we adopt a spatial partitioning and temporal propagation scheme. In each frame, we address one principal direction by applying depth-discriminative codes along it and broadband codes along its orthogonal direction. Since within a frame only the regions with edge direction corresponding to its aperture code behaves well, we utilize the close among-frame correlation to propagate the high quality single frame results temporally to obtain high performance over the whole image lattice. To physically implement this scheme, we use a Liquid Crystal on Silicon (LCoS) microdisplay that permits fast changing pattern codes. Firstly, we capture the scene with a pinhole and analyze the scene content to determine primary edge orientations. Secondly, we sequentially apply the proposed coding scheme with these orientations in the following frames. Experiments on both synthetic and real scenes show that our technique is able to combine advantages of the state-of-the-art patterns for recovering better quality depth map and all-focus images.

Abstract:Digital micro-mirror devices (DMDs) as spatial light modulators, have the advantages of high modulation speed and accuracy and can perform amplitude or phase modulation for illumination light, which are widely used in phase imaging systems. In this paper, a DMD is used for the random coding modulation of illumination light amplitude. We simulate the influences of the smallest modulation unit and switch ratio on phase imaging when random coding patterns are loaded on the DMD. Then we use a difference mapping iterative algorithm for light field reconstruction. Furthermore, it is experimentally verified that based on the parameters obtained via numerical simulation, we can retrieve amplitude and phase with a higher iteration speed and a fewer measurement times. In addition, for an object with the field of view of 4.3 mm X 4.3 mm, the reconstruction resolution reaches 6.9 mu m.
Pixel Super Resolution Imaging Technology Based on Phase Wavefront Modulation

Abstract:In the field of aperture coding super-resolution imaging, an important reason limiting the image super-resolution effect is that aperture coding greatly reduces the incident light flux of the system. Phase wavefront encoding modulation technology can effectively increase the system light flux and improve image super-resolution results. However, using phase wavefront coding instead of aperture coding will cause complex frequency domain calculations. In this paper, the feasibility of the single-seam phase encoding pattern is proved through the mathematical calculation of phase wavefront coding modulation. In the subsequent reconstruction process, the Fourier ptychographic (FP) imaging algorithm is used for verification. The resolvable line pairs of the USAF are increased from Group0 Number2 to Group1 Number3, means the image resolution is approximately doubled. The optical system built based on this phase mask prove the luminous flux of the acquired down-sampled image is increased about more than 5 times, and the image signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is increased about more than 7 times. This makes it possible for higher super-resolution computational imaging.

Abstract:Coded aperture compressive temporal imaging (CACTI) is the mapping of multiple frames using different encoding patterns into a single measurement and then using an algorithm to reconstruct the required high-dimensional signals, thus enabling high-speed photography on low-speed cameras. An encoding pattern and a reconstruction algorithm both play a critical role for CACTI. To improve the quality of the reconstruction, in terms of encoding, we took advantage of the reflective properties of the digital micromirror device and used a complementary dual-mask pattern to obtain more projection information. In terms of decoding, we developed what we believe, to the best of our knowledge, is a new model combining the weighted Landweber regularization with the relaxation strategy and a deep denoiser. The experimental results show the superiority of our proposed encoding-decoding combination, which achieves better performance in terms of the peak SNR, structural similarity index measure, and visual effects.

Abstract:Phase imaging always deals with the problem of phase invisibility when capturing objects with existing light sensors. However, there is a demand for multiplane full intensity measurements and iterative propagation process or reliance on reference in most conventional approaches. In this paper, we present an end-to-end compressible phase imaging method based on deep neural networks, which can implement phase estimation using only binary measurements. A thin diffuser as a preprocessor is placed in front of the image sensor to implicitly encode the incoming wavefront information into the distortion and local variation of the generated speckles. Through the trained network, the phase profile of the object can be extracted from the discrete grains distributed in the low-bitdepth pattern. Our experiments demonstrate the faithful reconstruction with reasonable quality utilizing a single binary pattern and verify the high redundancy of the information in the intensity measurement for phase recovery. In addition to the advantages of efficiency and simplicity compared to now available imaging methods,our model provides significant compressibility for imaging data and can therefore facilitate the low-cost detection and efficient data transmission.

Abstract:In the coherent diffraction imaging (CDI) techniques, a key point is to reconstruct the complex-valued object from the far-field intensity measurements, i.e., solving the phase retrieval problem. However, due to this ill-posed problem, traditional phase retrieval algorithms often encounter some problems associated with the iteration convergence. In this work, complementary phase modulations (CPM) are introduced to generate different far-field intensity measurements. The namely CPM-based method aims to find out the global optimal solution by imposing multi-dimensional constraints, including the diverse intensity images at the Fourier plane and the CPM at the object plane. It is proved by the numerical simulations and the optical experiments that the convergence speed and the recovery accuracy could be greatly improved. Furthermore, the shifting complementary phase modulations (SCPM)-based method is proposed by introducing more CPMs. The reconstruction performance is further improved even when the phase range is larger, and the support constraints are not required. In addition, the SCPM-based method is more robust to the Poisson noise. With the outstanding reconstruction performance, the CPM-based methods may be helpful to phase imaging in the application of visible-light microscopy and X-ray imaging.

Abstract:Phase unwrapping is used to establish the mapping relationship between camera and projector, which is one of the key technologies in fringe projection profilometry (FPP) based three-dimensional (3D) measurement. Although complementary Gray code assisted phase unwrapping technology can get a good result on the periodic boundary, it needs more coded images to obtain a high frequency fringe. Aiming at this problem, a complementary binary code assisted phase unwrapping method is proposed in this paper. According to the periodic consistency between the wrapping phase and binary codes, the coded patterns are generated. Then the connected domain strategy is performed to calculate the fringe orders using the positive and negative image binaryzation. To avoid the mistake near the periodic boundary, complementary binary code inspired by the complementary Gray code is proposed. The fringe order correction is also discussed for different situations in the first measured period. Only two binary images are needed in the proposed method, and the fringe frequency is not limited. Both the simulation and experiment have verified the feasibility of proposed method.

Abstract:Cubic phase wavefront coding technique is applied to an imaging system with the aim of extending the depth of field (DOF). The design is based on the wavefront coding method proposed by Dowski and Cathey1. The method employs a cubic phase mask (CPM) to modify the point spread function (PSF) of the imaging system under incoherent illumination such that the PSF of the system is formed as an isosceles right triangle, which makes the PSF insensitive to defocus. Researchers have found the optimized values of cubic phase coefficient and the exit pupil distance for the given specifications for solving wavefront coded task-based imaging problem2. The extended DOF design is usually based on placing a phase mask exactly in the pupil plane of the imaging system. However, this is not always practical because the complex design of the imaging system leads to a limited practical advantage of this kind of arrangement. In this work, the influence of phase mask position upon wavefront coding technique in the doublet imaging system is studied. The main goal is to find the position where to place the CPM in the imaging system, which type of arrangement can effectively improve the modulation transfer function. Finally, we compare two system configurations, front aperture stop and rear aperture stop in designing the doublet wavefront coded system.

Abstract:Recent coded aperture imaging systems have shown great success in scene reconstruction, extended depth-of-field and light field imaging. By far nearly all solutions are built on top of commodity cameras equipped with a single spherical lens. In this paper, we explore coded aperture solutions on a special non-centric lens called the crossed-slit (XSlit) lens. An XSlit lens uses a relay of two orthogonal cylindrical lenses, each coupled with a slit-shaped aperture. Through ray geometry analysis, we first show that the XSlit lens produces a different and potentially advantageous depth-of-field than the regular spherical lens. We then present a coded aperture strategy that individually encodes each slit aperture, one with broadband code and the other with high depth discrepancy code, for scene recovery. Synthetic and real experiments validate our theory and demonstrate the advantages of XSlit coded aperture solutions over the spherical lens ones.
Time-Efficient Light-Field Acquisition Using Coded Aperture and Events

Abstract:We propose a computational imaging method for time-efficient light-field acquisition that combines a coded aperture with an event-based camera. Different from the conventional coded-aperture imaging method, our method applies a sequence of coding patterns during a single exposure for an image frame. The parallax information, which is related to the differences in coding patterns, is recorded as events. The image frame and events, all of which are measured in a single exposure, are jointly used to computationally reconstruct a light field. We also designed an algorithm pipeline for our method that is end-to-end trainable on the basis of deep optics and compatible with real camera hardware. We experimentally showed that our method can achieve more accurate reconstruction than several other imaging methods with a single exposure. We also developed a hardware prototype with the potential to complete the measurement on the camera within 22 msec and demonstrated that light fields from real 3-D scenes can be obtained with convincing visual quality. Our software and supplementary video are available from our project website.
