New Ontology of Nicolai Hartmann

Abstract:Nicolai Hartmann is a famous German philosopher in modern times,and this paper explores his philosophy briefly and systematically.The material and the mental,being and consciousness,human being and world,meaning and value and other ultimate and basic problems are still discussed by philosophers,but they can't solve these ontological problems.There is always a critic philosophy operating in the development and evolvement of these ontological contradictions.The critic philosophy argues that we can't appeal to ontology to find the way to solve these ultimate problems but have to search for new ways.Hartmann's New Ontology is a typical one of them.This paper discusses the most principle ideas of New Ontology.First,it criticizes traditional ontology,expounds epistemology of New Ontology and makes a fine and categorical analysis of the existing structure of the whole world and the connection of its different areas and layers in terms of phenomenological method to achieve ontological understanding of the world unification.Second,it makes a brief analysis of theoretic system of New Ontology consisting of ontology,epistemology,nature philosophy,ethnics,aesthetics and logic.Third,it puts forward that the important meaning of Hartmann's New Ontology to modern philosophy is as following:1.Hartmann have realized the reverse of the Copernican Revolution,while he bases epistemology on ontology,establishes a new way to ontology and provides the argumentation of critical realism that is to resolve problems based on epistemic ontology originating from modernized epistemic criticism.2.The cognition direction of Husserl's phenomenology is based on subject consciousness and intentional activities,but Hartmann suggests that we should shift from reflecting attitude to naturalistic one and choose a way that differs from categorical analysis of essence institute and transcendent reduction.3.With New Ontology,Hartmann have actualized anthropological shift of traditional philosophy which sets subject consciousness in its centre.
