Abstract:We demonstrate a simple PMD-insensitive DOP-based OSNR monitoring technique aided by transmitter-side polarization scrambling. At OSNR =25 dB, OSNR monitoring with about 1-dB standard deviation was achieved in 10-Gb/s NRZ-OOK systems with DGD of 0-80 ps. (2 pages)

Abstract:Recently, degree of polarization (DOP) of light has been utilized as a parameter to monitor optical signal-to-noise-ratio (OSNR). However, in the presence of polarization-mode dispersion (PMD), when using DOP to determine OSNR, OSNR is always underestimated due to the depolarization effect induced by PMD. In this paper, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a simple PMD-insensitive OSNR monitoring technique based on DOP measurement. By the assistance of the transmitter-side polarization scrambling, the in-service OSNR parameter can be accurately derived from the measured maximum DOP value within the polarization scrambling period, which is immune to PMD effect. The monitoring performance is experimentally evaluated by statistical method at OSNR of 25 dB. Experimental results show that OSNR monitoring with about 1-dB standard deviation can be achieved in a 10-Gb/s NRZ-OOK system with DGD varying from 0 to 80 ps.

Abstract:In this letter, we propose and experimentally demonstrate an enhanced radio-frequency (RF) spectrum analysis technique to simultaneously monitor optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) and polarization-mode dispersion (PMD) for return-to-zero ON- OFF keying (RZ-OOK) systems. In this method, by cascading a large differential group delay element at the monitoring module, the PMD and OSNR parameters can be derived from the analysis of the position shift and the minimum power of the RF spectral dip, respectively. Experimental results show that this scheme can monitor PMD from 0 to 90 ps with less than 2-ps error and OSNR from 16 to 35 dB with less than 1-dB error in a 10-Gb/s RZ-OOK transmission system with a pulsewidth of 2.5 ps. The scheme possesses the advantages of simple implementation, large monitoring range, and high PMD monitoring sensitivity by using the RF spectrum analysis only at low-frequency range.

Abstract:OSNR monitoring is indispensable for coherent systems to ensure robust, reliable network operation and potentially enable impairment-aware routing for future dynamic optical networks. In a long-haul transmission link with chromatic dispersion (CD) and fiber nonlinearity, it is difficult to distinguish between amplifier noise and fiber nonlinearity induced distortions from received signal distributions even after various transmission impairment compensation techniques, thus resulting in grossly inaccurate OSNR estimates. Based on the received signal distributions after carrier phase estimation (CPE), we propose to characterize the nonlinearity-induced amplitude noise correlation across neighboring symbols and incorporate such information into error vector magnitude (EVM) calculation to realize fiber nonlinearity-insensitive OSNR monitoring. For a transmission link up to 1600 km and signal launched power up to 2 dBm, experimental results for 112 Gb/s polarization-multiplexed quadrature phase-shift keying (PM-QPSK) demonstrate an OSNR monitoring range of 10-24 dB with a maximum estimation error below 1 dB. For 224 Gb/s PM-16-quadrature amplitude modulation (PM-16-QAM) systems, simulation results demonstrate an OSNR monitoring range of 18-28 dB with a maximum estimation error below 1 dB. Tolerance of the proposed OSNR monitoring technique to different pulse shapes, timing phase offsets, polarization dependent loss (PDL), polarization-mode dispersion (PMD) and WDM effects are also investigated through simulations.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate a chromatic dispersion insensitive monitoring technique for monitoring of polarization mode dispersion and time misalignment in a 80 Gbit/s polarization-multiplexed return-to-zero differential phase-shift-keying (Pol-MUX RZ-DPSK) signal using a polarimeter and degree-of polarization (DOP) measurements. This technique is modulation format independent (i.e., applicable to both the phase- and amplitude-modulated data) and capable of measuring the fast change of polarization effects caused by vibration or other fast disturbances in the fiber link. We show that the monitored DOP of this signal decreases by 10.8% with differential group delay of 0-12 ps and decreases by 20% with a maximum misalignment of 12.5 ps between two orthogonally polarized RZ-DPSK channels. These measurements are less sensitive to chromatic dispersion of 0-400 ps/nm.

Abstract:Recently, OSNR monitoring based on the measurement of degree of polarization (DOP) has attracted much attention, thanks to its simplicity and high efficiency. However, the OSNR monitoring sensitivity is quite poor in the high OSNR region, resulting in high estimation error and narrow dynamic range. In this paper, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a narrow-band off-center optical filtering technique for DOP-based OSNR monitors. In 40-Gb/s RZ-OOK systems, OSNR monitoring sensitivity and DOP dynamic range are successfully enhanced to 3.14%/dB and 31.4%, respectively, in the high OSNR region (25 similar to 35dB/0.1nm). Abstract:An optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) monitoring technique using a cascaded long-period fiber grating with a tunable phase shifter is proposed for non return-to-zero on-off-keying (NRZ-OOK) and differential phase shift keying (DPSK) signals. This method is based on two key points: first, the cascaded long period fiber grating (CLPG) acts as an optical delay interferometer (ODI) by Mach-Zehnder configuration consisting of the core and cladding modes inside the CLPG. Secondly, an optically tunable phase shifter using an Yb(3+) doped optical fiber (YDF) is inserted between the CLPG. The phase of the modulated signal propagating along the core mode of YDF is controlled by adjusting pumping power of 976-nm laser diode (LD). By combining the CLPG with the optically tunable phase shifter, the OSNR monitoring could be successfully executed.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a chromatic-dispersion (CD) monitoring method based on radio-frequency (RF) clock power ratio measurement in 38-Gb/s nonreturn-to-zero differential quadrature phase-shift keying (NRZ-DQPSK) and 57-Gb/s NRZ differential 8-level phase-shift keying (D8PSK) systems. A narrowband fiber Bragg grating (FBG) notch filter is centered at the optical carrier wavelength, such that the RF clock power decreases with CD. On the other hand, RF clock power increases with CD in the absence of the notch filter. By using the RF power ratio of the filtered and nonfiltered signals, polarization-mode-dispersion (PMD) effects on RF power ratio can be eliminated and CD measurement sensitivity can be increased. The CD monitoring range is 0 similar to 250 ps/nmin the systems with a symbol rate of 19-Gsym/s. Moreover, the proposed CD-monitoring method is not affected by received optical power.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate a polarization-mode dispersion (PMD) monitoring technique that is insensitive to chromatic dispersion (CD) utilizing a polarizer and a low-speed detector for an 80-Gb/s polarization-multiplexed return-to-zero differential phase-shift-keying (pol-muxed RZ-DPSK) data channel. Measured RF power increment of 16.2 dB, which is insensitive to 0 approximately 100 ps/nm CD, is measured in the presence of the increasing differential group delay (DGD) from 0 to 12 ps. High-speed components are not required for monitoring the PMD on the pol-muxed data channel, which means that the proposed technique is potentially applicable to the higher speed pol-muxed data channels.

Abstract:We propose a new application of the MZI-SOA-based optical-2R regeneration, which can exactly compensate for the PMD (polarization mode dispersion) penalty resulting from 35ps-DGD in a 10 Gb/s system with 18 dB OSNR/0.1 nm. This demonstrates the effectiveness of the optical-2R in the receiver for PMD mitigation.

Abstract:Optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) monitoring is essential for control and management of dynamic optical networks. Small footprint, low cost, and less power consumption are always desirable for such monitoring system. In this paper, we demonstrate an integrated dispersion-insensitive in-band OSNR monitor based on a compact silicon microdisk resonator (MDR) with only 5-μm radius. The MDR (Q ~ 54 000) functions as an ultranarrow bandpass filter in the measurement of the OSNR. The monitoring performance is evaluated in a 10-Gb/s return-to-zero differential phase-shift keying (RZ-DPSK) system and is shown to be insensitive to chromatic dispersion from 0 to 850 ps/nm. The input power requirement of the monitor is also studied, which is consistent with the desire for low-power operation. Finally, we analyze the sensitivity of this technique for various Q factors of the MDRs. The results indicate that the sensitivity of this scheme can be improved with higher Q factors.
Study of Dynamic PMD Compensation System Using Signal DOP as the Feedback Control Signal

Abstract:PMD has been the major limiting factor for long haul high bitrate optical fiber transmission. The relationship between 1st order PMD and optical signal DOP (degree of polarization) of PRBS NRZ/RZ is discussed theoretically, and the impacts of different input states of polarization and higher-order PMD on signal DOP of NRZ/RZ are analyzed by numerical simulations. Then, Monte-Carlo simulations are performed with all order PMD model on the statistics of PMD compensator, which uses signal DOP as the feedback control signal in the 10 Gbit/s NRZ optical transmission system. The statistical simulation results indicate that the compensation probability for the signal eye-diagrams can reach 99.99% when the average DGD of the link is below 43 ps.

Abstract:We demonstrate a 10-Gb/s polarization-mode dispersion (PMD) compensation experiment by using a 4-degree of freedom compensator for both NRZ and RZ formats. The particle swarm optimization method is used as the searching algorithm and an adaptive dithering algorithm is employed in tracking process. The results show that the searching process is finished within several hundreds of milliseconds and the response time for the compensator to recover from a sudden disturbance is less than 20 ms.

Abstract:A robust, in-service, and joint monitoring of a dual-polarization (DP) transceiver IQ skew for a coherent DSCM system is proposed and experimentally validated. Unlike traditional monitoring schemes, the proposed scheme realizes robust transceiver impairments monitoring without channel impairment compensation, including chromatic dispersion (CD), polarization variation, and carrier phase noise. This enhances the stability and precision of the monitoring process and reduces computational complexity by eliminating sophisticated DSP for impairment compensation. A complex system model for a single-tone signal is given first. Based on the model, the proposed scheme enables monitoring of the DP transmitter and the receiver IQ skew using the inserted frequency domain pilots (FPTs). Experimental results show that the proposed scheme can estimate the transceiver IQ skew within 16 ps with an estimation error of less than 0.2 ps and is robust to CD, polarization variation, phase noise, and amplified spontaneous emission noise. To the best of our knowledge, the proposed scheme achieves in-service transceiver IQ skew monitoring for coherent DSCM systems for the first time.

Abstract:This work proposes a novel direct-detection polarization division multiplexed OFDM scheme without the need of dynamic polarization control at a polarization-diverse receiver, and the proposed scheme is robust against polarization mode dispersion. Setting the frequency difference between two polarization-orthogonal reference carriers as one subcarrier spacing, possible signal fading can be avoided, and the corresponding interference from adjacent subcarriers is eliminated by a novel MIMO algorithm. The penalty caused by high channel matrix condition number can be decreased by inserting empty tones among subcarriers, and the polarization-dependent OSNR penalty at the BER of 10⁻³ is <3.6 dB with an empty tone inserted every 8 subcarriers. Moreover, the numerical results demonstrate the 16 × 10³-ps/nm chromatic dispersion and the 300-ps differential group delay will not induce additional penalty.
