Abstract:Microwave photonic (MWP) filters using on-chip stimulated Brillouin scattering offer great potential for next-generation radio frequency (RF) applications due to the unprecedented high spectral resolution, flexible programmability, and ultra-wideband frequency agility. Although impressive functionalities have been reported, limited link performance, due to the amplification noise induced by the Brillouin gain process, hinders the practical deployment in existing RF applications. In this paper, we present the first comprehensive numerical and experimental study of chip-based Brillouin MWP bandpass filters implemented in a range of link configurations. In the experiments, key RF performance figures of merit, including link gain, noise figure, passband resolution, bandwidth tunability, and passband extinction of chip-based Brillouin filters are experimentally investigated and numerically analyzed. This comprehensive study points out a preferable filter scheme with optimized system-level performance. The numerical model developed in this paper allows for extrapolations to further improve the performance. The systematic work establishes a feasible design route for achieving high link-performance chip-based Brillouin microwave photonic bandpass filters.

Abstract:The filter frequency response and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) capacity of fiber Bragg grating resonator based photonic microwave filter are investigated experimentally by using two lasers with different linewidths as optical sources. The effects of optical source on the photonic microwave filter performance are analyzed. The results show that when the laser linewidth is less than the filter free spectral range (FSR), the filter response is fluctuating and the SNR capacity decreases about 10dB.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a photonic microwave transversal filter with a multiple-fiber resonator formed by cascaded fiber Bragg gratings. The filter-free spectral range is extended via the Vernier effect, which can increase the filter rejection bandwidth and suppress the unwanted periodic passbands. Abstract:Microwave transversal filters, which are implemented based on the transversal filter structure in digital signal processing, offer a high reconfigurability for achieving a variety of signal processing functions without changing hardware. When implemented using microwave photonic (MWP) technologies, also known as MWP transversal filters, they provide competitive advantages over their electrical counterparts, such as large operation bandwidth, strong immunity to electromagnetic interference, and low loss when processing signals at high frequencies. Recent advances in high-performance optical microcombs provide compact and powerful multi-wavelength sources for MWP transversal filters that require a larger number of wavelength channels to achieve high performance, allowing for the demonstration of a diverse range of filter functions with improved performance and new features. Here, a comprehensive performance analysis for microcomb-based MWP spectral filters based on the transversal filter approach is presented. First, the theoretical limitations are investigated in the filter spectral response induced by finite tap numbers. Next, the distortions are analyzed in the filter spectral response resulting from experimental error sources. Finally, the influence of input signal's bandwidth on the filtering errors is assessed. These results provide a valuable guide for the design and optimization of microcomb-based MWP transversal filters for a variety of applications.

Abstract:Designs of coherence-free microwave photonic filters with infinite impulse response (IIR) are presented. They are based on an electrical–optical modulator or electrical-absorption modulator with an opto–electronic feedback loop. General theoretical analyses for those configurations are obtained. When an electrical–optical intensity modulator is used for the IIR filter, the stopband of the filter can be switched to passband and vice versa. Measured results match closely with the theoretical expressions and demonstrate more than 30 dB rejection ratio and high frequency selectivity.

Abstract:A novel method is proposed and demonstrated to simultaneously realize phase‐to‐intensity modulation conversion (PM‐IM) and efficiency improvement using a fiber Fabry‐Perot (FFP) tunable filter. To achieve the conversion of phase modulation to intensity modulation, the phase‐modulated light is transmitted from one of the slopes of the FFP tunable filter to break the amplitude balance of the sidebands. Meanwhile, the modulation depth is increased due to the more suppression of the optical carrier than one of the first‐order sidebands. The results demonstrate that the PM‐IM conversion has been achieved and an about 10‐dB gain of electrical signal power could be obtained with suitable optical carrier suppression for both 10‐and 20‐GHz microwave input. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a tunable multi-tap microwave photonic filter (MPF) with complex coefficients. It is based on addition of carrier suppressed single sideband (CS-SSB) signal and phase-controllable optical carrier. Instead of using the technique of optical filtering, the CS-SSB signal is generated by a dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator (DPMZM) in our scheme. Frequency tuning of the filter is achieved by changing the phase of the optical carrier, which can be controlled by a variable optical delay line (VDL). The proposed structure features high flexibility and wideband RF response, and the experimental results demonstrate that it can be tuned continuously over one free spectral range (FSR) without changing the spectral shape of the filter.

Abstract:A four-tap microwave photonic filter with tunable center frequency and reconfigurable transfer function is proposed.It is based on two Mach-Zehnder interferometers (MZIs) cascaded with a variable optical coupler (OC) in between. By simultaneously adjusting the variable optical delay line incorporated in each MZI, center frequency of the filter can be tuned continuously. Reconfiguration of the filter is achieved by changing the coupling ratio of the variable OC. Experimental result demonstrates a tunable four-tap filter with sidelobe suppression in excess of 25 dB. Abstract:A simple all-optical coherence-free microwave notch filter is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The filter is based on remodulation scheme using a narrow-linewidth laser, an intensity electro-optic modulator, and a Sagnac fiber loop reflector to eliminate the coherent limitation and phase-induced intensity noise. Abstract:The creation of high-performance narrowband filters is of great interest for many RF-signal processing applications. To this end, numerous schemes for electronic, MEMS-based, and microwave photonic filters have been demonstrated. Filtering schemes based on microwave photonic systems offer superior flexibility and tunability to traditional RF filters. However, these optical-based filters are typically limited to GHz-widths and often have large RF insertion losses, posing challenges for integration into high-fidelity radiofrequency circuits. In this article, we demonstrate a novel type of microwave filter that combines the attractive features of microwave photonic filters with high-Q phononic signal processing using a photonic-phononic emit-receive process. Through this process, a RF signal encoded on a guided optical wave is transduced onto a GHz-frequency acoustic wave, where it may be filtered through shaping of acoustic transfer functions before being re-encoded onto a spatially separate optical probe. This emit-receive functionality, realized in an integrated silicon waveguide, produces MHz-bandwidth band-pass filtering while supporting low RF insertion losses necessary for high dynamic range in a microwave photonic link. We also demonstrate record-high internal efficiency for emit-receive operations of this type, and show that the emit-receive operation is uniquely suitable for the creation of serial filter banks with minimal loss of fidelity. This photonic-phononic emitter-receiver represents a new method for low-distortion signal-processing in an integrated all-silicon device.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate an approach to realizing a highly-selective and freely-tunable dual-passband microwave photonic filter (MPF) based on phase-to-intensity modulation conversion by stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS). In the proposed scheme, two passbands are obtained via a two-tone SBS pump which is generated by passing the optical carrier through two cascaded dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulators (DPMZMs) working at carrier-suppressed single-sideband modulation mode and carrier-suppressed double-sideband modulation mode, respectively. The frequencies of the two-tone pump are independently varied by adjusting the two single-tone signal frequencies applied to the two DPMZMs. Hence, two freely tunable and stable passbands are obtained. A proof-of-concept experiment is carried out, where the two passbands of the MPF can be freely tuned in the frequency range of 0-9.644 GHz. The out-of-band rejection ratio and the 3-dB bandwidth of the passbands are measured to be larger than 25 dB and smaller than 55 MHz, respectively.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate an ultracompact bandpass microwave photonic filter (MPF) based on a silicon photonic crystal (PhC) microcavity. Taking the fabricated PhC microcavity as an example, we comprehensively investigate both the linear and nonlinear microwave responses of the MPF based on silicon waveguide devices. Two cases are discussed in the experiment, i.e., the optical carrier wavelength is located on the left or right side of the notch resonant wavelength of the PhC microcavity. The experimental results agree well with the theoretical analyses. For the former case, the central frequency of MPF increases monotonically when fixing the optical carrier wavelength and increasing the optical carrier power. For the latter case, the nonlinear response at a fixed optical carrier wavelength shows a decrease first and then an increase in the central frequency of MPF when increasing the optical carrier power. A jump of the response is observed in the switching process. Moreover, we also observe an interesting bistable microwave response in the experiment under an optical carrier power of around −2.6 dBm in the latter case.

Abstract:A bandstop microwave photonic filter is experimentally demonstrated with integrated optical processor fabricated on silicon-on-insulator substrate. The optical processor consists of microrings and a Mach-Zehnder interferometer so that two bandstop responses are produced for processing two sidebands separately. With such a structure, tunable and reconfigurable bandstop MPFs can be easily realized by thermally tuning the resonant wavelength of microrings. According to the experimental results, the operating frequency and 10-dB bandwidth can be tuned within the range of 7-34 GHz and 1.85-4.55 GHz, respectively.

Abstract:A new optical-frequency comb-based microwave photonic harmonic down-convertor with tunable and reconfigurable filtering is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The coherent evenly spaced optical carriers offer harmonic down-conversion for ultrahigh radio frequency signals with low-frequency local oscillator, and construct a tunable and reconfigurable bandpass filter for the intermediate-frequency (IF) signal combined with dispersion. This implementation features high conversion efficiency. Experimental results show the filtered output IF signal has a clean spectrum with high quality. Measured conversion loss is 8.3 dB without extra electrical amplification.

Abstract:Microwave photonics has adopted a number of important concepts and technologies over the recent pasts, including photonic integration, versatile programmability, and techniques for enhancing key radio frequency performance metrics such as the noise figure and the dynamic range. However, to date, these aspects have not been achieved simultaneously in a single circuit. Here, we report a multi-functional photonic integrated circuit that enables programmable filtering functions with record-high performance. We demonstrate reconfigurable filter functions with record-low noise figure and a RF notch filter with ultra-high dynamic range. We achieve this unique feature using versatile complex spectrum tailoring enabled by an all integrated modulation transformer and a double injection ring resonator as a multi-function optical filtering component. Our work breaks the conventional and fragmented approach of integration, functionality and performance that currently prevents the adoption of integrated MWP systems in real applications.

Abstract:Photonic integration, advanced functionality, reconfigurability, and high RF performance are key features in integrated microwave photonic systems that are still difficult to achieve simultaneously. In this work, we demonstrate an integrated microwave photonic circuit that can be reconfigured for two distinct RF functions, namely, a tunable notch filter and a phase shifter. We achieved $>$50dB high-extinction notch filtering over 6-16 GHz and 2$\pi$ continuously tunable phase shifting over 12-20 GHz frequencies. At the same time, we implemented an on-chip linearization technique to achieve a spurious-free dynamic range of more than 120$\rm{dB}\cdot \rm{Hz}^{4/5}$ for both functions. Our work combines multi-functionality and linearization in one photonic integrated circuit, and paves the way to reconfigurable RF photonic front-ends with very high performance.
