Abstract:A tunable single bandpass microwave photonic filter (MPF) with an improved spurious free dynamic range (SFDR) using a dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator (DP-MZM) and a phase-shifted fiber Bragg grating (PS-FBG) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The DP-MZM is employed to generate an equivalent phase-modulated (EPM) signal with an adjustable optical carrier to sideband ratio. The PS-FBG is used as an optical notch filter to remove one sideband of the EPM signal to convert the EPM signal to a single-sideband intensity-modulated signal. At the output of a photodetector, a microwave signal is detected. The entire operation is equivalent to a single passband MPF. The tunability is achieved by tuning the wavelength the optical carrier. The SFDR of the MPF is improved due to the gain enhancement by a partial suppression of the optical carrier. An experiment is performed. A single bandpass MPF with a passband width of 150 MHz and a frequency-tunable range of ~5.5 GHz with an improved SFDR by 11 dB is demonstrated.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a tunable multi-tap microwave photonic filter (MPF) with complex coefficients. It is based on addition of carrier suppressed single sideband (CS-SSB) signal and phase-controllable optical carrier. Instead of using the technique of optical filtering, the CS-SSB signal is generated by a dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator (DPMZM) in our scheme. Frequency tuning of the filter is achieved by changing the phase of the optical carrier, which can be controlled by a variable optical delay line (VDL). The proposed structure features high flexibility and wideband RF response, and the experimental results demonstrate that it can be tuned continuously over one free spectral range (FSR) without changing the spectral shape of the filter.

Abstract:We demonstrate a novel microwave photonic filter based on a non-coherent broadband optical source and the variable optical carrier time shift (VOCTS) method. Optical slicing which is essential conventionally is not employed in our scheme. Nevertheless, equivalent "electrical slicing" is performed by VOCTS, generating a passband free from the carrier-suppression effect. The baseband response is eliminated by using carrier-suppression or phase modulation. Single bandpass is also achieved due to the continuous-time sinusoidal impulse response. Detailed theoretical analyses are presented and agree with the experiments quite well.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a voltage-controlled frequency-tunable optoelectronic oscillator based on a dispersion-induced microwave photonic filter (MPF), which is implemented with a carrier phase-shifted double sideband modulation in a dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator (DPMZM), a linear chirped fiber Bragg grating and a polarization multiplexed composite cavity. By simply adjusting the DC bias voltage of the DPMZM, the central frequency of the dispersion-induced MPF is shifted and the oscillation frequency of optoelectronic oscillator can be tuned. A detail theoretical analysis is provided, which is validated by a proof of concept experiment.

Abstract:A four-tap microwave photonic filter with tunable center frequency and reconfigurable transfer function is proposed.It is based on two Mach-Zehnder interferometers (MZIs) cascaded with a variable optical coupler (OC) in between. By simultaneously adjusting the variable optical delay line incorporated in each MZI, center frequency of the filter can be tuned continuously. Reconfiguration of the filter is achieved by changing the coupling ratio of the variable OC. Experimental result demonstrates a tunable four-tap filter with sidelobe suppression in excess of 25 dB. Abstract:A novel microwave photonic filter (MPF) with large tunability, configurability and single passband is proposed and demonstrated in this paper. The combination of polarization modulation (PolM) and variable differential group delay (DGD) introduces optical carrier time shift between orthogonally polarized optical carrier and its modulated sidebands, which eliminates carrier suppression effect caused by fiber dispersion and shifts the filter baseband to a new tunable frequency. The MPF is experimentally implemented. By simply change DGD value, the single passband filter center frequency is widely tuned without changing the filter shape. By changing the optical filter, the filter׳s shape, bandwidth and mainlobe-to-sidelobe suppression ratio is also reconfigurable. By using polarization based differential detection, the signal to noise ratio is improved by 9.9dB and the spurious passband brought by the residual DGD in PolM is suppressed by 20.1dB.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate an approach to realizing a highly-selective and freely-tunable dual-passband microwave photonic filter (MPF) based on phase-to-intensity modulation conversion by stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS). In the proposed scheme, two passbands are obtained via a two-tone SBS pump which is generated by passing the optical carrier through two cascaded dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulators (DPMZMs) working at carrier-suppressed single-sideband modulation mode and carrier-suppressed double-sideband modulation mode, respectively. The frequencies of the two-tone pump are independently varied by adjusting the two single-tone signal frequencies applied to the two DPMZMs. Hence, two freely tunable and stable passbands are obtained. A proof-of-concept experiment is carried out, where the two passbands of the MPF can be freely tuned in the frequency range of 0-9.644 GHz. The out-of-band rejection ratio and the 3-dB bandwidth of the passbands are measured to be larger than 25 dB and smaller than 55 MHz, respectively.

Abstract:A tunable bandpass microwave photonic filter can be achieved by using a notch ring resonator with optical phase modulation. However, the filter's out of band rejection ratio and shape factor are limited due to the ring resonator's residual phase, which can seriously degrade the filter's performance. By using dual optical carriers and setting their wavelengths oppositely detuned from two resonant frequencies of a notch ring resonator, the residual phase induced by the ring resonator at radio frequencies falling outside the region of the notch stopband is reduced, thus the out-of-band rejection ratio and shape factor of the microwave photonic filter are greatly improved. The proposed microwave photonic filter was both verified theoretically and experimentally. Compared with single optical carrier method, the out-of-band rejection ratio of the filter can be enhanced from 17.7dB to 31.5dB, and the filter's shape factor is improved from 3.05 to 1.78. Besides, the filter's frequency and bandwidth can be tuned by varying the wavelengths of the two optical carriers and the ring resonator's coupling coefficients. Finally, a tunable bandpass microwave photonic filter with frequency tuning range of 2 similar to 14GHz, 3dB bandwidth tuning range of 0.673 similar to 2.798GHz is demonstrated. Abstract:A novel method of simultaneous realization of optical carrier-suppression and single-sideband modulation using fiber Fabry-Perot tunable filter is presented. In order to enhance transmission performance of radio over fiber links, we use a fiber Fabry-Perot tunable filter to filter out one sideband as well as suppress the optical carrier power. The results demonstrate 20.5dB and 14.2dB improvement in the signal noise ratios when 18GHz and 10GHz microwave signals carrying 5Mbit/s quadrature-phase-shift-keyed (QPSK) format data is transmitted over 35 km single mode fiber, respectively.

Abstract:An approach to achieving a highly selective and stable microwave photonic filter (MPF) with two passbands independently tunable is presented. The dual-passband MPF is realized based on phase-to-intensity modulation conversion by stimulated Brillouin scattering. In the proposed scheme, a freely tunable two-tone pump is generated by passing the optical carrier through two cascaded dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulators (DPMZMs), with one acting as a frequency shifter with assistance of an electrical 90 degrees hybrid and the other one working at carrier-suppressed double-sideband modulation mode to generate two-tone pump. The two passband locations of the MPF can be freely set by adjusting the frequencies of the two single-tone signals applied to the two DPMZMs. In the experiment, a dual-passband MPF with flexible passband tunability and shape-invariant tuning is demonstrated in the frequency range of 0-9.644 GHz, where the out-of-band rejection ratio and the 3-dB bandwidth of the passbands are measured to be larger than 25 dB and smaller than 55 MHz, respectively. The proposed MPF scheme also has the ability to tailor the shape and the width of the two passbands, which is a promising solution to achieve a freely programable dual-passband MPF.

Abstract:A spectrum-sliced microwave photonic filter with an improved spurious-free dynamic range (SFDR) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The basic principle is based on the polarization-sensitive modulation in a LiNbO3 phase modulator and the dispersion-induced linear/nonlinear phase-to-intensity conversion. A simultaneous noise and nonlinearity reduction is further achieved via polarization diversity and balanced detection, giving rise to an improved SFDR. In the experiments, the SFDR is measured to be 90 dB center dot Hz(4/5) for the novel scheme, in contrast to 75 dB center dot Hz(2/3) for the traditional configuration.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel approach to achieving a wideband tunable dual-passband microwave photonic filter (MPF) is proposed based on optical-injected distributed feedback (DFB) semiconductor lasers and a dual-output Mach-Zehnder modulator (DOMZM). The fundamental concepts for realizing the MPF are the wavelength-selective amplification effect and the period-one oscillation state under optically injected DFB lasers. These effects provide a widely tunable range of center frequency, along with high flexibility and low insertion loss. The proposed MPF is experimentally demonstrated, showing that the dual-passband center frequency in the MPF can be tuned independently from 19 to 37 GHz by adjusting the detuning frequency and injection ratio. Meanwhile, the insertion loss of the system is about 15 dB when there is no optical or electrical amplifier in the MPF link. The out-of-band suppression ratio of the MPF is more than 20 dB, which can be improved by adjusting the power of the two optical signals.

Abstract:A simple and tunable single-hand pass microwave photonic filter of adjustable shape is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The filter is based on multiple sources (spectrum-sliced by a Mach-Zehnder interferometer) and two cascaded incoherent optical structures, namely, a dispersion medium of 50-km single-mode fiber and a fiber ring delay line. In the experimental range from 1.0 to 3.8 GHz, a discretely tunable single-hand pass filter with a high Q-factor or a flat-top response is achieved by carefully matching the transfer functions of the two individual optical structures.

Abstract:Microwave photonic filters are fundamental parts in microwave frequency signal processing. The possibility of microwave photonic filters to be integrated in a monolithic chip is highly appealing due to more compact size, weight and lower power consumption. We demonstrate a highly-integrated microwave photonic bandpass filter with wide-frequency tunable range. Both active and passive components including a phase modulator, four cascaded microring resonators and a photodetector, are integrated on a silicon photonic chip. The integrated filter has a wide tunable range from 6.08 GHz to 35.92 GHz and a reconfigurable bandwidth from 0.22 GHz to 0.54 GHz. Spurious-free dynamic range is also measured to examine the link performance. This work is a solid step towards the implementation of an on-chip miniaturized microwave signal processing system.

Abstract:A novel tunable and reconfigurable microwave photonic filter based on two cascaded Mach-Zehnder modulators (MZMs) and a dispersive medium is presented, theoretically discussed and experimentally demonstrated. A single-wavelength laser diode (LD) and the first MZM are used to obtain a multi-wavelength optical source, and the second MZM is modulated with the signal to be processed. The dispersive medium provides the time delay for different taps, since different wavelength experiences different time delay, when it travels in the optical fiber. By adjusting the modulation frequency and the bias voltage on the first MZM, the wavelength spacing and the relative amplitude of the optical tones after the first MZM can be changed, thus making the filter tunable and reconfigurable. The presented microwave photonic filter has been implemented in the experiment. The experimental results agree well with the simulation results, and show that the present microwave photonic filter has good tunability and reconfigurability. The mainlobe-to-sidelobe ratio (MSR) of around 25dB is achieved for the presented filter in the experiment.

Abstract:An approach to realizing a highly selective and stable tunable dual-passband microwave photonic filter (MPF) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated, in which two passbands have a fixed frequency interval. The MPF is achieved based on phase-to-intensity modulation (PM-IM) conversion by stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS). The kernel of the proposed scheme is generating a two-tone pump by first frequency-downshifting the optical carrier through self-induced SBS in a spool of single-mode fiber (SMF), and then modulating it in carrier-suppressed double-sideband modulation mode. Making use of Brillouin frequency shift difference between the SMF and the high nonlinear fiber used for PM-IM conversion, two passbands with a fixed frequency interval equal to 2 times the Brillouin frequency shift difference between the two fibers can be achieved. Through simply varying the modulation frequency, the two passbands can be synchronously shifted back and forth. In the experiment, a tunable dual-passband MPF with a fixed frequency interval of 2.434 GHz is demonstrated in the frequency range of 0-9.644 GHz, where the out-of-band rejection ratio and the 3-dB bandwidth of the passbands are measured to be larger than 20 dB and smaller than 57 MHz, respectively.

Abstract:A microwave photonic single-passband filter with highly flexible tunability of bandwidth and frequency is proposed and demonstrated. Two different light waves with their polarizations aligned with two principal axes of a polarization modulator are modulated, and two phase-modulated signals with opposite phase modulation indices are generated. Two different lower parts of the lower sidebands are removed by a fiber Bragg grating to convert two phase-modulated signals into two intensity-modulated signals. Two high-pass frequency responses with different cut-off frequencies are realized. Since the two converted intensity-modulated signals are out of phase, the overlapped frequency responses are cancelled, and a single-passband filter is realized. The bandwidth and the central frequency can be tuned independently by properly adjusting the two wavelengths simultaneously. Furthermore, both the bandwidth and the central frequency can be simultaneously tuned by adjusting one of the two wavelengths.
