Abstract:The particulate matter in diesel engine exhaust can easily get inhaled and do great harm to human health. Incineration of particulate matter from diesel exhaust can be realized simply by oxidation,yet it mainly consists of carbon soot and SOF. The aftertreatment techniques for PM, including diesel particulate filters ( DPFs ) coupled with regeneration , diesel oxidant catalyst (DOC),and electrostatic capture are reviewed. The non-thermal plasma technique is introduced. The common chemical reactions in plasma reactors are presented. Different types of discharge in gas are also discussed. Direct and indirect plasma method based on different locations of plasma equipment are presented. The latter one helps avoid bad effects on plasma process caused by high temperature. The traditional methods for soot inciberation are rather mature in comparison with the plasma method. So more researches on the plasma process are suggested,so as to provide reference for the development and application of plasma reactors.
Sustainable Removal of Particulate Matter from Diesel Engine Exhaust at Low Temperature Using a Plasma-Catalytic Method

Abstract:There is a great need for a sustainable diesel particulate matter (DPM) removal approach to effectively control the emission of DPM over long term and to improve the efficiency of diesel engine. However, methods that are currently available either require a high operation temperature or an external device. Here, we report an optimized plasma-catalytic method for the sustainable removal of DPM at low temperature. Au catalyst, which was the most effective in the enhancement of DPM oxidation among the tested noble-metal catalysts, was introduced into the plasma reactor for the diesel engine test. We found that after 1.1 h plasma processing, the performance of DPM removal in the condition of sole plasma (without a catalyst) was reduced due to the accumulation of precipitated DPM within the plasma reactor. As a result of an enhanced DPM oxidation efficiency due to the use of Au catalyst, the accumulation of precipitated DPM was inhibited and the performance of DPM removal was maintained until plasma was switched off (8 h processing). Importantly, the maintained DPM removal caused an enriched CaSO4 deposition on the plasma-catalytic reactor, which further enhanced DPM oxidation efficiency. An investigation of the treatment of particulate matter from gasoline engine exhaust using non-thermal plasma

Abstract:A plasma reactor with catalysts was used to treat exhaust gas from a gasoline engine in order to decrease particulate matter (PM) emissions. The effect of non-thermal plasma (NTP) of the dielectric discharges on the removal of PM from the exhaust gas was investigated experimentally. The removal efficiency of PM was based on the concentration difference in PM for particle diameters ranging from 0.3 to 5.0 microm as measured by a particle counter. Several factors affecting PM conversion, including the density of plasma energy, reaction temperature, flow rate of exhaust gas, were investigated in the experiment. The results indicate that PM removal efficiency ranged approximately from 25 to 57% and increased with increasing energy input in the reactor, reaction temperature and residence time of the exhaust gas in the reactor. Enhanced removal of the PM was achieved by filling the discharge gap of the reactor with Cu-ZSM-5 catalyst pellets. In addition, the removal of unburned hydrocarbons was studied. Finally, available approaches for PM conversion were analyzed involving the interactions between discharge and catalytic reactions.

Abstract:Condensable particulate matter (CPM) is a primary particulate matter that exists in the form of gas or vapor phase before discharge, but after discharge, it rapidly turns into a particulate substance due to cooling and dilution. The composition of CPM is very complex, and it poses a threat to the environment and human health. However, there is a lack of research on the control of CPM. Therefore, this study investigated the effects of activated carbon (AC) injection coupled with low-low temperature electrostatic precipitator on the adsorption of CPM in the flue gas of a 300 MW ultra-low emission coal-fired power plant. The sampling system was conducted according to ISO 23210-2009 and U.S. EPA method 202. Results shows that the adsorption removal efficiency of CPM by ACs ranged from 14% to 33%, and the adsorption removal effect of AC on inorganic components in CPM was better than that of organic components. AC had significant adsorption effects on Cl- and NH4+ but had weak adsorption effect on NO3- in CPM. AC with larger specific surface area, more abundant pore structure, and richer surface chemical functional groups has better adsorption effect on metal elements such as Na, Ca, Mg, K, and Al in CPM is better than that of Fe. As for the organic components in CPM, the adsorption effect of AC for esters was considerable, but its adsorption on organosilicon was limited.

Abstract:Particulate matter (PM) pollution has become a serious environmental problem, especially in developing countries, owing to its severe threat to human health. Particularly, airborne PM2.5 (mean aerodynamic diameter ≤2.5µm) particles are extremely harmful, because the tiny particles can enter human respiratory system and even penetrate into circulatory system. Herein, we propose an effective strategy to recycle PM2.5 carbon nanoparticles generated by diesel vehicle engine for the applications of clean energy. After thermal treatment and purification, the PM2.5 derived carbon nanoparticles show a diameter distribution between 25 and 40nm, mesoporous characteristics (with an average pore size of ~3.3nm), and homogeneous nitrogen incorporation (with N content of ~1.1at%). The PM2.5 derived N-doped mesoporous carbon nanoparticles were used as an advanced electrode material in supercapacitors, exhibiting excellent specific capacity and superb stability over long-term cycling. Moreover, the recycled PM2.5 carbon nanoparticles show attractive electrocatalytic properties for oxygen reduction reaction, presenting high onset potential and good immunity to methanol crossover. We expect this research can provide inspiration for air pollution control and sustainable energy utilization.

Abstract:The contact between particulate matter (PM) exhausted from diesel engine and catalyst, Cu0.95K0.05Fe2O4, was studied in simultaneous catalytic PM and NOx removal reaction with a diesel particulate filter (DPF) by the temperature programmed reaction (TPR) technique. Influences of contact conditions (tight contact or loose contact), PM content loaded, transition layers and the methods coating catalysts on the reaction were investigated. It is of great significance to increase the contact areas between PM and catalyst as well as improve the transition layer and the catalyst coated technique so as to enhance the activity of simultaneously catalytic removal of PM and NOx.

Abstract:A novel plasma-driven catalysis (PDC) reactor with special structure was proposed to remove vehicle exhaust gas. The PDC reactor which consisted of three quartz tubes and two copper electrodes was a coaxial dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) reactor. The inner and outer electrodes firmly surrounded the outer surface of the corresponding dielectric barrier layer in a spiral way, respectively. Nano-titanium dioxide (TiO2) film prepared by radiofrequency (RF) magnetron sputtering was coated on the outer wall of the middle quartz tube, separating the catalyst from the high voltage electrode. The spiral electrodes were designed to avoid overheating of microdischarges inside the PDC reactor. Continuous operation tests indicated that stable performance without deterioration of catalytic activity could last for more than 25 h. To verify the effectiveness of the PDC reactor, a non-thermal plasma(NTP) reactor was employed, which has the same structure as the PDC reactor but without the catalyst. The real vehicle exhaust gas was introduced into the PDC reactor and NTP reactor, respectively. After the treatment, compared with the result from NTP, the concentration of HC in the vehicle exhaust gas treated by PDC reactor reduced far more obviously while that of NO decreased only a little. Moreover, this result was explained through optical emission spectrum. The O emission lines can be observed between 870 nm and 960 nm for wavelength in PDC reactor. Together with previous studies, it could be hypothesized that O derived from catalytically O-3 destruction by catalyst might make a significant contribution to the much higher HC removal efficiency by PDC reactor. A series of complex chemical reactions caused by the multi-components mixture in real vehicle exhaust reduced NO removal efficiency. A controllable system with a real-time feedback module for the PDC reactor was proposed to further improve the ability of removing real vehicle exhaust gas.

Abstract:The simultaneous removal of NOx and particulate matter (PM) exhausted from diesel engine was studied with a diesel particulate filter (DPF) on which a mixed metal oxide catalyst, Cu0.95K0.05Fe2O4 was loaded. The NOx reduction was observed in the same temperature range of the CO2 formation, implying the occurrence of the simultaneous removal of NOx and PM in an oxidizing atmosphere. It was shown that SOF and soot in PM are attributed to the reduction of NOx at lower and higher temperatures, respectively. The oxidation of PM was enhanced by the coexistence of NO and O2. The ignition and exhaustion temperatures of PM decrease as the order NO>O2>NO+O2. This is a combined process of PM trapping as well as the catalytic reactions of soot oxidation and NOx reduction, promising the most desirable after-treatment of diesel exhausts.
Investigation on Removal Effects and Condensation Characteristics of Condensable Particulate Matter: Field Test and Experimental Study.

Abstract:Condensable particulate matter (CPM) has become the main part of the total primary PM emitted from stationary sources and has aroused increasing concern. In this work, the removal effects of wet flue gas desulfurization (WFGD) on CPM components were studied. A new CPM-containing flue gas system was designed and used to investigate the condensation characteristics of 16 PAHs, sulfuric acid mist and SO2 conversion into CPM. Some interesting results were obtained and include the following: (i) The removal efficiencies of WFGD on both CPM inorganic and organic fraction reached 81.0% and 67.3%, respectively. (ii) The removal efficiency data obtained for C21–C29 and 5-ring PAHs revealed that organic components with high boiling points and low volatility in CPM are easily removed by WFGD. Condensation experimental results indicated that the condensation ratios of PAHs generally increased with the number of fused benzene rings, while the increase of flue gas moisture content might inhibit the conversion of PAHs into CPM. (iii) The concentrations of SO42−, Ca, and Na accounted for 48.7% of CPM inorganic fraction after desulfurization, while Ca was barely removed by WFGD. Condensation experiments indicated that most SO42− in CPM arose from sulfuric acid mist, rather than from sulfate aerosols. Note that only <20% of the sulfuric acid mist belonged to the CPM category, which might help to develop specialized deep purification strategy for SO3. In addition, SO2 could cause a high positive bias for the CPM field test although its condensation ratio was only 2.7%. This work provides a basic reference for subsequent CPM formation and reduction researches.

Abstract:Nonthermal plasma (NTP) technology can oxidize and decompose diesel particulate matter (PM) under much lower temperatures (≤200 °C) without catalyst, showing promise for potential applications. A self-made NTP generator was used to produce NTP gas that reacted with PM at a certain reaction temperature and reaction time, and the concentration of O3 in NTP was modified by adjusting the working parameters. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) were used to analyze changes in the surface functional groups, component oxidation activity, removal effect, and the soluble organic fraction (SOF) of PM samples before and after processing. As the O3 concentration increased, the effect of NTP on PM removal strengthened. PM surface functional groups can be converted from C–OH into CO under the action of NTP at high O3 concentrations. The oxidation activity of the volatile fraction (VF) and soot in PM can be substantially improved under high O3 concentrations. Higher O3 concentrations resulted in increases in the number of oxygen-containing groups in the molecular formula of SOF and the ratio of components. This study provide a certain reference value for the strategy of removing PM pollutants from diesel engines and even the atmosphere.

Abstract:The simultaneous removal of NOx and particulate matter (PM) from diesel exhaust is investigated over a mixed metal oxide catalyst of La(0.9) K(0.1) CoO3 loaded on gamma-Al2O3 spherules with the assistant of plasma. It was found that NOx was reduced by PM in oxygen rich atmosphere, the CO2 and N2 were produced in the same temperature window without considering the N2 formed by plasma decomposition. As a result, the temperature for the PM combustion decreases and the reduction efficiency of NOx to N2 increases during the plasma process, which indicated that the activity of the catalyst can be improved by plasma. The NOx is decomposed by plasma at both low temperature and high temperature. Therefore, the whole efficiency of NOx conversion is enhanced.

Abstract:The purification treatment of automobile exhaust has attracted great attention because of the severe harm of automobile exhaust to the global environment and human health. Herein, inspired by capillarity, we adopted a very simple face-to-face constrained growth method to prepare a conjugated microporous polymers membrane (C-CMPs-M) with a "Hamburger" structure through Sonogashira-Hagihara (S-H) coupling reaction for purification and filtration of gaseous, solid and liquid pollutants in automobile exhaust. Thanks to such a special structure, the C-CMPs-M-1 membrane shows an extremely high efficiency of capture and interception of PM 2.5 and PM 10 (>99.5 %) and PM 0.3 (>95%) in the exhaust gas obtained at different engine speeds. Unlike those hydrophilic filtration materials which suffer the drawback of less tolerance in high humidity conditions, the unique superhydrophobic chemistry of the CMPs membrane makes it possible to efficiently intercept PM under high humidity conditions, and the filtration efficiency basically remains unchanged within 10 hours. More interestingly, the super lipophilicity of the membrane endows it excellent oil absorption performance, e.g., high absorption of 907.61 % of its own weight for engine oil was detected and consequently good oil retention performance was also obtained. It also has a strong absorption performance for the unburned oil mist ejected from the exhaust. Based on its ideal porous structure, high interception efficiency, and good physicochemical stability at high humidity and high temperatures conditions, therefore, our C-CMPs-M-1 shows great potential in automobile exhaust purification applications.

Abstract:This study proposes a novel four-way plasma-catalytic removal of particulate matter, nitrogen oxides, hydrocarbons, and carbon monoxide without external heating using a pulsed dielectric barrier discharge reactor combined with Au/CaSO4/gamma-Al2O3 catalyst balls. With the optimized amount of Au and CaSO4, over 90% of particulate matter, 40% of nitrogen oxides, and nearly 100% of hydrocarbons were removed from the diesel engine exhaust, while the increase of carbon monoxide concentration due to the oxidation of particulate matter and hydrocarbons and the decomposition of carbon dioxide were minimized. Importantly, the performance of the plasma catalytic reactor was maintained without decline for the duration of the experiment (7 h) with an attractive cost/performance ratio. These findings offer a new approach to the simultaneous treatment of diesel exhausts and provide a novel concept for the design of a practical and compact after-treatment device for the diesel engine exhaust gases.
Plasma-catalyzed combined dynamic wave scrubbing: A novel method for highly efficient removal of multiple pollutants from flue gas at low temperatures

Abstract:In this study, we developed a novel approach combining a non-thermal plasma system with M(Ce, Cu)-Mn/13X oxidation and post-dynamic wave wet scrubbing technologies, for effectively removing multiple pollutants from flue gases. Experimental results demonstrated that the plasma coupled with post-dynamic wave wet scrubbing achieved impressive synergistic removal efficiencies of 98% for SO2, 50.9% for NO, and 51.3% for Hg0 in flue gas. Through the use of M(Ce, Cu)-Mn/13X catalysts synthesized via the co-precipitation, the oxidation efficiency of the system is significantly enhanced, with synergistic removal efficiencies reaching up to 100% for SO2, 98.7% for NO, and 96% for Hg0. Notably, (Ce-Mn)/13X exhibited superior catalytic activity, the results are supported by comprehensive sample characterization, DFT mechanistic analysis, and experimental validation. Additionally, we elucidated the plasma oxidation mechanism and the working principles of the M(Ce, Cu)-Mn/13X loaded catalysts. This innovative technology not only facilitates pollutant oxidation but also ensures their complete removal from flue gas, providing a high-efficiency, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly solution for the treatment of multi-pollutants in flue gases.

Abstract:With increasingly severe air pollution and improvement in people's environmental awareness, air pollutant treatment, especially for soot particles (PMs), has become a research hotspot in the environmental protection field. At present, catalytic purification technology is one of the most effective and widely used technologies for treating PMs, and the development of efficient and low-cost catalysts is a key factor in the application of catalytic purification technology. Doping alkali/alkaline earth metals in metal oxide catalysts can significantly improve the contact efficiency between the catalyst and PMs and improve active oxygen mobility on the catalyst surface. Therefore, it has been widely used in catalytic soot purification. In this study, preparation methods for alkali/alkaline earth metal-modified metal oxide catalysts, such as impregnation, hydrothermal, sol-gel, coprecipitation, template, and other methods, are introduced, and the related preparation principles are described. Meanwhile, research progress into the above catalysts in catalytic PM purification and simultaneous soot and nitrogen oxide species (NOx) removal are summarized in detail. Finally, the problems and future development trends in alkali/alkaline earth metal-modified metal oxide catalysts in catalytic PM purification are summarized and discussed.

Effect Of Plasma On The Hybrid Plasma-Catalytic Removal Of Hydrocarbons, Nitrogen Oxides And Diesel Soot

Abstract:Combining temperature programmed reaction (TPR) and isothermal reaction, effect of plasma on hybrid plasma-catalytic removal of HC, NOx and diesel soot was studied under simulated diesel engine exhaust condition. TPR results indicate that both the maximum removal rate of NOx and the ignition temperature of diesel soot decreases a little after adding plasma, changing from 76.1% and 283.2 degrees C to 72.2% and 252.6 degrees C respectively when molar ratio of C3H6/NO in the feed gas is 1:1. FT-IR oresults show that there is no detectable CO and NO for all of these experiments. As for C3H6 and NO2, there is still some remaining after plasma reaction, but little after catalytic reaction and none after plasma-catalytic reaction. As for N2O, there is a little produced by plasma, but none After adding catalyst. The concentration of CO2 increases by the sequence of plasma, catalysis, and plasma-catalysis.

Performance of the catalysts prepared by impregnation method was superior to that of slurry method,with PM ignition temperature as low as 160 ℃ and the maximum NOx to N_2 conversion of up to 63.4%.

Abstract:Given the severe pollution caused by particulate matters in diesel engine exhaust, we discuss herein the problem of exhaust back-pressure and regeneration of commonly used diesel particulate filter treatment technology. This paper proposes a method based on water film adsorption to remove exhaust particles from exhaust gas. Particulates flowing through the purification device are adsorbed by the continuous isobaric water film formed on the wave adsorption plate. The formation process and characteristics of the equal pressure-differential water film are studied through combined theoretical analysis and experimental verification. The regeneration process and influencing factors of the purification system are also analyzed, and the treatment of the device is verified. Experiments show that the device offers a better purification of exhaust particulates with lower exhaust resistance and regeneration of the system during the treatment.

Abstract:Mechanism of diesel particulate matter (DPM) oxidation over Co–FeOx catalyst with and without dielectric barrier discharge plasma. Co–FeOx shows excellent synergy with plasma, and the formation and utilization of strong oxidizing intermediates promote low‐temperature oxidation of DPM. Nonthermal plasma (NTP) enhanced catalytic oxidation of diesel particulate matter (DPM) is promising for applications. The synergistic effects of transition metal oxides (MOx, M = Mn, Cu, Ce, Fe, Co, Ti) and dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma on DPM oxidation were investigated, and Fe2O3 showed the best synergistic effect. Cobalt‐doped iron oxide (Co–FeOx) displaying a spinel structure showed the best performance among M–FeOx (M = Co, Ce, Cu, Zn, Mn). The main intermediate product generated during the catalytic oxidation of DPM is monodentate carbonate. Under DBD plasma, a strong oxidizing intermediate ferrate (FeO42−) mainly produced at 100–200°C can promote the low‐temperature oxidation of DPM.
