Abstract:The refractive indices of naturally occurring materials are limited, and there exists an index gap between indices of air and available solid materials. With many photonics and electronics applications, there has been considerable effort in creating artificial materials with optical and dielectric properties similar to air while simultaneously being mechanically stable to bear load. Here, a class of ordered nanolattice materials consisting of periodic thin‐shell structures with near‐unity refractive index and high stiffness is demonstrated. Using a combination of 3D nanolithography and atomic layer deposition, these ordered nanostructured materials have reduced optical scattering and improved mechanical stability compared to existing randomly porous materials. Using ZnO and Al2O3 as the building materials, refractive indices from 1.3 down to 1.025 are achieved. The experimental data can be accurately described by Maxwell Garnett effective media theory, which can provide a guide for index design. The demonstrated low‐index, low‐scattering, and high‐stiffness materials can serve as high‐quality optical films in multilayer photonic structures, waveguides, resonators, and ultra‐low‐k dielectrics.

Abstract:Au nanoparticles show large third-order nonlinear effect and ultra-fast response. Here a high nonlinear aggregate film based on self-assembled gold nanoparticles is reported and its third-order nonlinear refractive index coefficient is measured by Z-scan experiment. The third-order nonlinear refractive index coefficient of the Au nanoparticle aggregate film (γ1 = 9.2 × 10−9 cm2/W) is found to be larger than that of an 8-nm-thick sputtered Au film (γ2 = 6.5 × 10−9 cm2/W). This large nonlinear effect can be attributed to the strong field enhancement due to localized plasmon resonances between Au nanoparticles. The result shows that the self-assembled Au nanoparticle aggregate film could be a promising candidate as a third-order nonlinear optical material.
Gold Nanopillar Arrays As Biosensors Fabricated by Electron Beam Lithography Combined with Electroplating

Abstract:We report our work on the development of subwavelength gold pillar arrays as local surface plasmonic (LSP) resonators for sensor applications. These arrays are fabricated by electron beam lithography combined with electroplating. The conical shape, instead of flat one, on the top of Au pillars, induced by uneven current density in the plating, may affect the LSP resonance (LSPR). This paper aims to carry out a systematic study of LSPR behavior in nanopillar arrays with both flat and conical shapes on the top, trying to prove the feasibility of the developed nanoprocess. Both numerical simulations by the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method and experimental characterization on fabricated LSP resonators for reflectance spectra were carried out. Our experiments indicate that the fabricated nanopillar arrays in Au demonstrate the promising capability of refractive index sensing with sensitivity of 270 nm/refractive index unit. FDTD simulation of electric field density in the gap between pillars reveals the correlation between the resonant absorption of the incident light and the standing waves of localized surface plasmon polaritons in the gaps of the pillar array, despite the conical shape of the pillars. Moreover, it was discovered that the resonant absorption becomes stronger when the light incident angle is increased. The proposed nanoprocess for pillar arrays should possess great prospects for manufacturing Au pillars with high aspect ratio for achieving higher sensitivity at an economical cost.
Mechanism of Large Optical Nonlinearity in Gold Nanoparticle Films.

Abstract:The Z-scan technique, using femtosecond (fs) laser pulses at 1480 nm laser pulses, was used to measure the nonlinear optical properties of gold (Au) nanoparticle (NP) films made by both nanosecond (ns) and fs pulsed laser deposition (PLD) in vacuum. At irradiance levels of 1 x 10(12) Wm(-2), the ns-PLD films displayed induced absorption with beta = 4 x 10(-5) mW(-1), and a negative lensing effect with n(2) = -4.7 x 10(-11) m(2)W(-1) with somewhat smaller values for the fs-PLD films. These values of n(2) imply an unphysically large change in the real part of the refractive index, demonstrating the need to take account of nonlinear changes of the Fresnel coefficients and multiple beam interference in Z-scan measurements on nanoscale films. Following this approach, the Z-scan observations were analyzed to determine the effective complex refractive index of the NP film at high irradiance. It appears that at high irradiance the NP film behaves as a metal, while at low irradiance it behaves as a low-loss dielectric. Thus, it is conjectured that, for high irradiance near the waist of the Z-scan laser beam, laser driven electron tunneling between NPs gives rise to metallike optical behavior. Refractive Index Dependent Local Electric Field Enhancement in Cylindrical Gold Nanohole

Abstract:We report on the local electric field characters in a long cylindrical gold nanohole. Theoretical calculation results based on quasi-static model show that the local environmental dielectric constant dependent electric field intensity and field distribution in the gold nanohole show quite unique properties, different from those in the thin gold nanotube. Because of the thick gold wall, no plasmon hybridization exists. So there is only one resonance frequency taking place, and the intense local field has been focused into the gold nanohole. Our main finding is that, the local field in the nanohole is largely dependent on the inner hole refractive index and outer environmental refractive index. The competition between inner hole and outer polarization leads to a non-monotonic change of the local field intensity with increasing the dielectric constant of the nanohole. This refractive index controlled local field enhancement in cylindrical gold nanohole presents a potential for tunable surface-enhanced fluorescence and novel nano-optical biosensing applications.

Abstract:Linear and nonlinear optical properties of periodic triangular Au nanoparticle arrays were investigated. We compared the optical nonlinearity of periodic Au nanoparticle arrays with that of the ultra-thin gold film consisting of randomly distributed spheroidal clusters. A pronounced enhancement of the third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility.( 3) in Au arrays was observed, and the figure of merit, chi((3))/alpha, of the periodic nanoparticle arrays is one order of magnitude larger than that of the ultra-thin film. Such an enhancement of the optical nonlinearity could be due to the strong local field near the triangular nanoparticles.

Abstract:The optical reflectivity of polished silicon covered by a forest of vertically standing gold nanowires (grown inside the pores of an anodic alumina matrix) is found to be considerably smaller than that of bare polished silicon and strongly influenced by scattering of light by the nanowires. We propose a phenomenological modification to the Maxwell–Garnett effective medium theory formula to account for this effect. We also find that the gold nanowire/alumina film has interesting optical properties, such as transparency in the mid-infrared and high absorbance in the visible, and may be used as a low reflectivity coating and a low-pass filter.

Abstract:Spherical gold nanoclusters are grown by 1.8 MeV Au++ ion implantation into an amorphous silica matrix and subsequent air annealing at 873 K. Ultraviolet and visible light absorption confirms the presence of a dipolar surface plasmon peak at the expected location for a gold sphere in silica. Grazing incidence X-ray diffraction shows peaks corresponding to fcc gold with lattice spacing close to that of bulk gold, as well as allowing estimation of cluster size using Scherrer's formula. Low frequency Raman scattering reveals a relatively narrow peak, suggesting a narrow distribution of nanocrystal diameters. Acoustic phonon frequencies corresponding to the spheroidal quadrupolar vibrations of a continuum sphere with the anisotropic elasticity of gold are calculated using a novel method of molecular dynamics and extrapolation to the continuum limit using relatively small numbers of point masses. The study confirms high energy ion implantation as a method capable of producing gold nanocrystals with spherical shape and well controlled size.

Abstract:Suspended gold nanorods were synthesized via electrochemical method. UV-Visible spectra and fluorescence emission spectra were measured at room temperature. Numerical calculations based on quasi-static and scattering theories were developed to describe these observed optical properties. Because of the anisotropy of the gold nanorods, both absorption features and scattering features show two peaks, which result from the transverse and longitudinal surface plasmon resonances respectively. Furthermore, with increasing the dielectric constant of surrounding medium from 1.5 to 2.5, these two absorption peaks increase and red shift in a nonlinear way together. However, the scattering peak at the shorter wavelength depends on the surrounding medium dielectric constant in a linear fashion, and the other scattering peak at the longer wavelength decreases and red shifts nonlinearly.

Abstract:Nanostructured silicon with low surface reflectivity has important application prospects in a wide range. We fabricate crystalline silicon nanopillars with ultralow broadband reflectivity via maskless reactive ion etching at room temperature. The measurements show that the silicon nanopillars are in nano-scale diameter and micron-scale height with tip ends, which show extremely powerful antireflection capability. The silicon nanopillars with the heights of 5 gm and 7 gm demonstrate ultralow weighted average reflectivity of 0.80% and 0.40%, respectively, in a wide wavelength range of 300-1030 nm. Additional SiNX coating reduces the reflectivity to 0.09%. The two-dimensional weighted average reflectivity as function of angle of incidence and wavelength is measured, which shows low sensitivity to angle of incidence in the range of 0 degrees-70 degrees. The calculated wavelength dependent reflectance is in good agreement with the measured result in the range of 300-1030 nm. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The enhancement of optical nonlinearities in a gold film with random roughness were measured by Z-scan technique with 0.71 ns, 532 nm laser pulses. The values of the nonlinear absorption coefficient β and nonlinear refractive index coefficient γ were obtained through open- and close-aperture Z-scan, β=−1.3×10−5 m/W, γ=1.32×10−12 m2/W, correspondingly, the imaginary part χ(3)Im and the real part χ(3)Re of the third-order nonlinear susceptibility χ(3) were obtained, respectively. The thermal effect and the enhancement of optical nonlinearities due to the surface plasmon resonance in metal film were discussed.
Achieving Optical Refractive Index of 10-Plus by Colloidal Self-Assembly

Abstract:This study demonstrates the developments of self-assembled optical metasurfaces to overcome inherent limitations in polarization density (P) within natural materials, which hinder achieving high refractive indices (n) at optical frequencies. The Maxwellian macroscopic description establishes a link between P and n, revealing a static limit in natural materials, restricting n to approximately 4.0 at optical frequencies. Optical metasurfaces, utilizing metallic colloids on a deep-subwavelength scale, offer a solution by unnaturally enhancing n through electric dipolar (ED) resonances. Self-assembly enables the creation of nanometer-scale metallic gaps between metallic nanoparticles (NPs), paving the way for achieving exceptionally high n at optical frequencies. This study focuses on assembling polyhedral gold (Au) NPs into a closely packed monolayer by rationally designing the polymeric ligand to balance attractive and repulsive forces, in that polymeric brush-mediated self-assembly of the close-packed Au NP monolayer is robustly achieved over a large-area. The resulting monolayer of Au nanospheres (NSs), nanooctahedras (NOs), and nanocubes (NCs) exhibits high macroscopic integrity and crystallinity, sufficiently enough for pushing n to record-high regimes. The study underlies the significance of capacitive coupling in achieving an unnaturally high n and explores fine-tuning Au NC size to optimize this coupling. The achieved n of 10.12 at optical frequencies stands as a benchmark, highlighting the potential of polyhedral Au NPs in advancing optical metasurfaces.

Abstract:In this work, we reported split surface plasmon resonance (SPR) bands originated from the Au nanopillars developed on rippled Si substrates. This is the first report of gold SPR splitting on a pre-structured Si surface. The Si surface was subjected to a bombardment of Ar ions to fabricate ripples on the surface. A 5 nm thin layer of Au was then deposited on the rippled surface, and the SPR was studied using UV–visible spectroscopy. Further, X-ray diffraction (XRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM), X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES), and extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (EXAFS) were used to characterize the prepared samples. The AFM confirmed that the deposited gold is in nanopillar form, and the rippled surface governs the growth, shape, and size of gold nanopillars. A large aspect ratio has been observed for the nanopillars, resulting in a red-shifted and split SPR band. The experimental XANES of Au L 3 -edge were successfully mimicked by simulated XANES, confirming the existence and signature of the nanostructure. For the first time, the local structure information of Au nanopillars constructed on rippled Si substrate has been obtained using the EXAFS approach in different directions and correlated with the plasmonic bands.

Abstract:Gold nanoparticles of different shapes and sizes, including nanospheres, nanocubes, nanobranches, nanorods, and nanobipyramids, were dispersed into water-glycerol mixtures of varying volume ratios to investigate the response of their surface plasmon peaks to the refractive index of the surrounding medium. The refractive index sensitivities and figures of merit were found to be dependent on both the shape and the size of the An nanoparticles. The index sensitivities generally increase as An manoparticles become elongated and their apexes become sharper. An nanospheres exhibit the smallest refractive index sensitivity of 44 nm/RIU and Au nanobranches exhibit the largest index sensitivity of 703 nm/RIU. Au nanobipyramids possess the largest figures of merit, which increase from 1.7 to 4.5 as the aspect ratio is increased from 1.5 to 4.7.

Abstract:in this paper, it has been shown that the refractive index (RI) sensitivity of higher-order cladding modes of a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) can be enhanced significantly with the deposition of gold nanoparticle over the surface. A detailed numerical study is being accomplished in this work. Initially, the sensitivity of higher-order cladding modes is evaluated with a dedicated multi-layer numerical model of FBG. Subsequently, thin nanoparticles of gold are being considered over the surface of FBG. A Four-layer model is employed for the computation of sensitivity of cladding modes of FBG. Almost a '2.5' fold enhancement of sensitivity is found with the utilization of gold nanoparticles. This proposed FBG sensors can be utilized in highly sensitive chemical and biological sensing applications.

Abstract:A kind of Au nanoparticle (NP) containing 2D hexagonal mesoporous TiO2 thin films (MTTFs) has been successfully synthesized through a deposition-precipitation method. The Au NPs show uniform size distribution and the Au content within the MTTFs is measured to be 7.49 wt.%. The third-order nonlinear optical refractive index of the Au NPs contained MTTFs has been measured by the Z-scan technique at 1064 urn. The absolute value of nonlinear refractive index (n(2)) and third-order nonlinear susceptibility (chi((3))) were calculated to be 2.64 X 10(-7) and 6.32 X 10(-8) esu, respectively. The high nonlinearity of the composite thin films can be attributed to the intraband transition of electrons near the Fermi surface in well-dispersed An NPs confined in mesoporous channels and the high linear refractive index of the nanocrystalline anatase framework. 0 2008 Optical Society of America

Abstract:Au:BaTiO(3) composite films comprising hexagon-shaped Au nanoparticle arrays covered with BaTiO(3) matrix were fabricated by double-layer nanosphere lithography and pulsed laser deposition technique. The optical nonlinearity of the composite film was determined using the Z-scan technique at a wavelength of 532 nm and a pulse duration of 25 ps. The third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility, chi(3), was found to be 2.9x10(-8) esu, which is comparable with the best values in metal-dielectric films comprising randomly distributed spherical particles but with much higher metal concentrations. The local electric field enhancement in and near the particles was investigated using the dipole discrete approximation method.

Abstract:A facile polymethyl methacrylate-assisted turnover-transfer approach is developed to fabricate uniform hexagonal gold nanobowl arrays. The bare array shows inferior light trapping ability compared to its inverted counterpart (a gold nanospherical shell array). Surprisingly, after being coated with a 60-nm thick amorphous silicon film, an anomalous light trapping enhancement is observed with a significantly enhanced average absorption (82%), while for the inverted nanostructure, the light trapping becomes greatly weakened with an average absorption of only 66%. Systematic experimental and theoretical results show that the main reason for the opposite light trapping behaviors lies in the top amorphous silicon coating, which plays an important role in mediating the excitation of surface plasmon polaritons and the electric field distributions in both nanostructures.

Abstract:Highly ordered gold nanopillar arrays were fabricated using anodized aluminum oxide (AAO) templates. Nanopillars with a dimension of 110 +/- 15 nm in vertical height and 75 +/- 10 nm in base diameter were formed with a density of 150 mu m(-2). The ordered nanopillar arrays give reproducible surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) at a detection limit of 10(-8) M using thionine as probing molecules. The enhancement by the Au nanopillar arrays was comparable with or better than that of dispersed gold nanoparticle SERS substrates. This work demonstrates a new technique for producing highly ordered and reproducible SERS substrates potentially applicable for chemical and biological assay.
