Abstract:Photonic crystals have stimulated extensive interest of study.Characterized by periodic structures and photonic band gaps,these materials have promising applications in microwave and optoelectronics.In early days,there has been much attention paid to dielectric photonic crystals,while magnetic materials have not drawn much attention for photonic crystals since the magnetic permeability μ of magnetic materials is equal to unity in the optical range.However,most ferrites have values of μ quite different from unity in the microwave range and thus can be exploited for magnetic photonic crystals(MPCs).One of the special characters of the MPCs is its photonic band gap can be tuned by an applied static magnetic field.Therefore,MPCs can be used as switches and tunable filters in microwave engineering.Not limited in microwave frequencies,the MPCs may also be realized in infrared and visible frequency range.Recent studies show that meta-materials have evident magnetic response,which makes optical MPCs possible.Therefore,there have been some growing interests in MPCs and some papers have devoted to the investigation of MPCs.We study the band structure of two-dimensional magnetized MPCs in which both magnetic anisotropy and dispersion is considered.Photonic band structure is a basic and important tool to understand the characteristics of photonic crystals.Numerous theoretical approaches have been developed to calculate the photonic band structures for 2-D and 3-D photonic crystals.These include conventional plane-wave expansion method(PWM),real-space transfer-matrix method(TMM),and finite-difference time domain method(FDTD).These methods were developed for the dielectric photonic crystals where the dielectrics are considered isotropy.However,MPCs are anisotropic and dispersive at magnetized state,so theses methods need some modifications.In this paper,we have investigated photonic band structure of 2-D magnetic photonic crystal with triangular lattice under external static magnetic field by modified plan wave expansion method and experiments.Under the condition that magnetic permeability is both anisotropic and dispersive,we have derived calculation formulas of the method.Using this modified PWM we calculate the band diagram of the MPCs made of ferrite rods in a dielectric substrate.The obtained bandgap is in a good agreement with the transmission spectrum by full wave simulations and measurements of a real sample of magnetic photonic crystals.The results demonstrate the validity of the modified plane-wave expansion method in the band structure calculation of photonic crystals with dispersion and anisotropy.
