Abstract:AbstrcatThe calculation of band structure and analysis of light propagation in photonic crystals are basic and important issues. The plane wave expansion method to calculate band structure and the Floquet-Bloch theory to analyze light propagation in periodic dielectric materials are discussed emphatically. The electromagnetic waves in photonic crystals can be expressed as a series of spacial harmonics. The propagation direction of light in photonic crystals is consistent with wave energy or group velocity. The behavior of light can be analyzed qualitatively by using wave vector diagram.

Abstract:A plane-wave expansion method based on the effective medium theory for calculating the band structure of a two-dimensional photonic crystal is presented. Compared to two other plane-wave expansion methods, the present method has a faster convergence and advantage to calculate the band structure for complicated structures. Using the present fast method, a photonic crystal with a large complete bandgap Δω=0.1111(2πc/a) (a is the lattice constant) is found. The designed photonic crystal is formed by a triangular array of elliptic air holes in GaAs medium.

Abstract:A novel eigenvalue method is proposed to calculate the band structure of lossy and dispersive photonic crystal (PC). Using an idea from quantum transport problem, a standard linear eigenvalue equation rather than a nonlinear eigenvalue equation is obtained by a rigorous and artful transformation. And the physical parameters of lossy and dispersive PC are obtained by solving the linear eigenvalue equation using finite-difference frequency-domain (FDFD) method. Compared with other methods, the proposed method has great features, such as clear concept, simple calculation, less computing time and storage. A dielectric PC is simulated by the proposed method, and the results accord well with those from the traditional FDFD method, which verifies the validity of the proposed method. Moreover, the dispersion relation of the lossy and dispersive PC is calculated by the proposed method, and the surface plasmon frequency is obtained. Furthermore, the influence of loss on the dispersion relation and eigenmode field distribution is studied. The results provide some theoretical guidance for studying the lossy and dispersive PC.

Abstract:The convergence feature of two types of plane-wave expansion methods commonly used for photonic crystals is analyzed. It is shown that the reason for the slow convergence of these plane-wave expansion methods is not the slow convergence of the Fourier series for the permittivity profile of the photonic crystal but the inappropriate formulation of the eigenproblem. A new formulation of the eigenproblem is presented to improve the convergence in the one-dimensional case. (C) 2002 Optical Society of America.
Plane-wave Expansion Method for Calculating Band Structure of Photonic Crystal Slabs with Perfectly Matched Layers

Abstract:We present a new algorithm for calculation of the band structure of photonic crystal slabs. This algorithm combines the plane-wave expansion method with perfectly matched layers for the termination of the computational region in the direction out of the plane. In addition, the effective-medium tensor is applied to improve convergence. A general complex eigenvalue problem is then obtained. Two criteria are presented to distinguish the guided modes from the PML modes. As such, this scheme can accurately determine the band structure both above and below the light cone. The convergence of the algorithm presented has been studied. The results obtained by using this algorithm have been compared with those obtained by the finite-difference time-domain method and found to agree very well.
Self-collimation and subwavelength lensing in wavy two-dimensional photonic crystals

Abstract:The equal-frequency surface of wavy two-dimensional (2D) photonic crystals (PC) is obtained by virtue of plane wave expansion method. From the equal-frequency surface, we find a iso-frequency contour of rectangular form. A flat dispersion relation exists at this frequency, which is suitable for the self-collimation. The finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method is used to simulate the self-collimation in wavy 2DPC on which a Gaussian beam is incident at different angles. Subwavelength lensing by self-collimation is also available in wavy 2DPC. The resolution of 0.28 λ is achieved when single source is employed in simulation. The resolution will gradually degrade as the source moves beyond the near-field domain.

Abstract:A simplified plane wave expansion method (PWM) based on the group theory is introduced into the calculation of the photonic band gap, the transmission and Bragg reflection spectra. Calculated by the simplified PWM, the transmission and Bragg reflection spectra are compared with its photonic band structure. Their precise correspondence confirms the reliability of the simplified PWM. The comparison results indicate that the simplified algorithm can reduce the number of plane waves used in the equation and significantly ease the numerical burden and the requirement on computer memory space.

Abstract:In this letter we present a revised formulation of the plane wave method (PWM) for the band structure calculation of photonic crystals. In comparison to the conventional PWM, the formulation in this letter allows for modeling of dispersive material. One application of the presented method is for band structure calculations of photonic crystal slabs. While a thin photonic crystal slab is considered, a full three-dimensional (3D) problem can be reduced to a two-dimensional one by using the effective index method. However, the obtained effective index of such a slab is frequency dependent. The revised PWM is then applied to solve this problem. The results obtained using this algorithm have been compared with those using a full 3D finite-difference time-domain method and found to agree very well. (C) 2005 American Institute of Physics.

Abstract:We introduce a new numerical method, based on plane-wave expansion method, to calculate the band structures of 2-dimensional periodic structures made of dispersive medium. As an example, we calculated band diagram of magnetic photonic crystals with dispersive permeability by the method. The results are the same as the other methods, but our method is highly convergent so saves a lot of running time. Besides, the method provides an intuitive means to study the effect of the magnetic field to the bandgap of the magnetic photonic crystals.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel effective index method for modeling high index contrast planar photonic crystals is introduced. In this effective index method, the frequency axis is divided into many regions, and the effective index for each region is obtained using the central frequency of this region. Dispersion relationship in a wide frequency region can then be calculated using the effective index for each region to obtain the states in this region with a 2-D simulation and integrating all states in all frequency regions. The validity of this effective index method in approximating an intense three-dimensional (3-D) simulation required by the finite thickness of planar photonic crystals with a less intense two-dimensional simulation is examined. As an example, this method is applied to calculate the band diagram of a planar photonic crystal waveguide. By comparing with the results obtained with the full 3D simulation, we find that this method is valid for all states below the light cone in many bands, and the wider the waveguide, the more the number of bands, which agree with the full 3D results.

Abstract:Based on a mode-expansion theory under single-mode approximation, we derived the scatterings parameters for a general one-dimensional photonic grating composed of two different materials, and then established an effective-medium theory for such a composite by equating the obtained scattering parameters to those of a homogeneous medium. Our effective-medium theory well describes the grating structures with general material and geometrical parameters, and recovers two previous formulas, which are valid only at certain limiting conditions. The theory is justified by full-wave simulations and microwave experiments.

Abstract:Metamaterialsare electromagnetic composites constructed by subwavelength sized microstructures, and thus can exhibit tailored effective permittivity and permeability. Effective-medium theory (EMT) plays a crucial role since it serves as a bridge to link theories, which are frequently conducted on model hypothetical systems, and experiments which are always performed on realistic metamaterial systems with complex microstructures. Therefore, a good EMT, which can precisely predict the effective parameters of complex metamaterials, is always highly desired. Based on a mode-expansion theory under single-mode approximation, we derived the scatterings parameters for a general one-dimensional photonic grating composed by two different materials, and then established an effective-medium theory (EMT) for such a composite using the derived scatterings parameters. Our EMT well describes the gating structures with general material and geometrical parameters, and recovers previous two formulas which are valid only at certain limiting conditions. The theory is justified by full wave simulations and microwave experiments. Then we generalize our theory into two-dimensional case. Mapping such an inhomogeneous system to an effective homogeneous medium exhibiting the same scattering coefficients, we established an effective medium theory for an array of subwavelength cylinders. Our theory is justified by comparing with full wave simulations on realistic structures, and is found to work well in a much more expanded parameter space than the standard Maxwell-Garnett theory.

Abstract:Although many effective-medium theories have been proposed for studying metamaterials, most of them do not work well for multilayer metamaterials with small interlayer distances. Based on rigorous mode-expansion analyses on a model system consisting of multiple layers of subwavelength gratings, we identify that the failures of conventional effective-medium theories are caused by neglecting strong near-field couplings in homogenizing such systems. These understandings motive us to propose an alternative homogenization approach for strongly coupled multilayer metamaterials, in which predominant near-field corrections have been considered automatically. Our effective-medium theory can well describe multilayer metamaterials with arbitrary interlayer distances including particularly those systems for which conventional effective-medium theories fail. We finally extend our theory to multilayer metamaterials with complicated microstructures and validate the theory by full-wave simulations as well as microwave experiments. Our theory not only well complements the available effective-medium theory formalisms, but also provides a powerful tool to study the properties of strongly coupled metamaterials, which may find many applications in practice.

Abstract:A new method based on a finite difference of the governing differential equation for the eigenvalue problem is introduced to calculate the band structure of a two-dimensional photonic crystal. The effective medium technique is also used in the method. The problem is reduced to a standard matrix eigenvalue problem. Compared to the conventional plane wave expansion method, the present method improves the convergence of the solution and thus is a fast and accurate algorithm for calculating the band structure of a photonic crystal.

Abstract:We analyze scattering properties of twisted bilayer photonic crystal slabs through a high-dimensional plane wave expansion method. The method is applicable for arbitrary twist angles and does not suffer from the limitations of the commonly used supercell approximation. We show strongly tunable resonance properties of this system which can be accounted for semianalytically from a correspondence relation to a simpler structure. We also observe strongly tunable resonant chiral behavior in this system. Our work provides the theoretical foundation for predicting and understanding the rich optical physics of twisted multilayer photonic crystal systems.

Abstract:Wavy-structured two-dimensional (2D) photonic crystal (PC) is possessed of isofrequency contours of rectangular form and is therefore capable of self-collimation. The self-guiding phenomenon is studied by calculating the intensity of the electromagnetic waves through slabs of the PC. Superlensing based on self-collimation of wavy-structured 2DPC is also investigated by analyzing the field pattern where point source is used. The full width at half maximum of image point is calculated to be 0.28λ. The position of the image is always located in the near-field domain of the slab. Image quality degrades gradually as the slab thickness or the source-slab distance increases.

Abstract:Some recent results on the physical and statistical properties of nearby and distant AGN are presented. I first discuss the properties of "elusive" AGNs, i.e. obscured AGNs which do not show a Seyfert-like spectrum in the optical. Then I present preliminary results from a detailed study of the contribution of obscured AGNs and of their host galaxies to the infrared cosmic background. Finally I discuss an observational program aimed at investigating the properties of the most distant quasars, of their circumnuclear medium and the implications for their host galaxies.

Abstract:We solve analytically the multiple-scattering equations for two-dimensional photonic crystals in the long-wavelength limit. Different approximations of the electric and magnetic susceptibilities are presented from a unified pseudopotential point of view. The nature of the so-called plasmon-polariton bands is clarified. Its frequency as a function of the wire radius is discussed. The corresponding tunable "magnetic surface plasmon" band is pointed out.

Abstract:The performance of the perfectly matched layer absorption boundary condition is fully exploited when it is applied to the planewave based transfer-scattering matrix method in photonic crystal device simulation. The mode profile of one dimensional dielectric waveguide and the optical properties of sub-wavelength aluminum grating with semi-infinite substrate are studied to illustrate the accuracy and power of this approach.
Non-Bloch Theory for Spatiotemporal Photonic Crystals Assisted by Continuum Effective Medium

Abstract:As one indispensable type of nonreciprocal mechanism, a system with temporal modulations is intrinsically open in the physical sense and inevitably non-Hermitian, but the space and time degrees of freedom are nonseparable in a large variety of circumstances, which restrains the non-Bloch band theory to apply. Here, we investigate the spatially photonic crystals (PhCs) composed of spatiotemporal modulation materials (STMs) and homogeneous media, dubbed as the STM-PhC, wherein the spatial and temporal modulations are deliberately designed to be correlated. To bypass the difficulty of the spatiotemporal correlation, we first employ the effective medium theory to account for the dispersion of fundamental bands under the influence of Floquet sidebands. Based on the dynamical degeneracy splitting viewpoint and continuum generalized Brillouin zone condition, we then analytically give the criteria for the existence of the non-Hermitian skin effect in the STM. Assisted by developing a numerical method that embeds the plane wave expansion in the transfer matrix, we establish the non-Bloch band theory for the low-frequency Floquet bands in the STM-PhCs, in which the central is the identification of the generalized Brillouin zone. We finally delve into the topological properties, including non-Bloch Zak phases and delocalization of topologically edge states. Our work validates that effective medium assists the non-Bloch band theory applied to the STM-PhCs, which delivers a prescription to broaden the horizons of non-Bloch theory.
