Abstract:This paper reports design and fabrication of reflective phase relief kinoform with 16 phase levels. This kinoform converts a single beam to a 5 X 5 beam array. The measured diffraction efficiency is 76.16%, near the designed one of 79.68%. The aperture of the kinoform is 10 mm X 10 mm.

Abstract:It has been widely accepted that spatial beam smoothing is essential in coupling laser energy to inertial confinement fusion targets. In this paper, kinoform phase plate arrays have been proposed to produce spatially homogenized far fields for a broad range of phase and irradiance non-uniformities in the incident beam. A global-local united search algorithm has been presented to design a phase plate element to concentrate more than 95% energy of laser beams on a flat-top super-Gaussian (SG) envelope. A spatial-fining technique has been proposed to control the intermediate-spatial-frequency overlapping intensity modulation generated by various phase plate elements. For a flat incident aperture size of 40 cm, a laser wavelength of 351 nm, and a lens focal length of 1000 mm, 10 x 10 phase plate arrays have been designed to produce sixteenth-order SG profiles with the intensity modulation interval less than 5 mu m. More than 96% of the incident energy is homogeneously constrained in the desired region.

Abstract:The Gerchberg-Saxton iterative algorithm was adopted. Keeping the amplitude of frequency spectrum approximately constant, the phase of the spectrum was quantified into 2 level. By using binary optical technique, 8 phase level kinoform was fabricated. Clear construction images with high reflection efficiency were obtained.

Abstract:This article presents a Ka -band 64-element phased-array receiver with four simultaneously reconfigurable beams for millimeter-wave (mmW) satellite communications, where each beam utilizes the maximum available antenna aperture to enhance the combining gain. To address the design challenge of the large area induced by the multiple beamforming networks (BFNs), the beamformer utilizes a digital-assisted variable-gain phase-shifting technique and an active combining scheme to enable compact implementation and facilitate array design. This article also proposes a cancellation-based inter-beam interference reduction technique using multiple beams to support steerable nulling to boost beam-to-beam isolation, which offers an alternative solution to reduce array sidelobes. The proposed 8 x 4 beamformer integrates 32-path independent plural weighting channels and is fabricated in 65-nm CMOS with a compact chip area of 5.3 x 4 mm(2) . Each element achieves a gain of 26.7 dB, a noise figure (NF) of 3.7-4.5 dB, and an input-referred 1-dB gain compression point (IPIDB) of -32.5 dBm at 29.5 GHz. The proposed 64-element receive phased array is capable of scanning +/- 50(degrees) at 29.5 GHz without grating lobes at both the azimuth and elevation directions. To the authors' best knowledge, the proposed phased-array receiver presents the largest number of co-aperture reconfigurable beams among mmW-integrated RF-beamforming phased arrays.
Transmissive Kinoform Fabricated by Use of Binary Optical Technique

Abstract:The kinoform is attractive because of the high diffraction efficiency and the manner of on-axial reconstruction. In this work, we use the Gerchberg-Saxton iterative algorithms to optimize phase distribution of the kinoform. The phase in each pixel is then quantized into a set of eight-level values. The surface of quartz glass plate is etched to a depth determined by the corresponding phase retard, forming a kinform with stair-like surface relief. The optical experiments are canied out. The on-axial reconstruction image with high fidelity and high efficiency is obtained.
The Design of a K-Band 256-Element Reconfigurable Multi-Beam Phased-Array for SATCOM Application

Abstract:In this paper, we present a 256-element K-band (17.7-21.2GHz) phased array with 4 concurrent multi-beam, of which the polarization can be reconfigured as linear polarized, dual-polarized or circular polarized. With a stacked patch antenna unit designed of Rogers 4350B, the bandwidth of the phased array can reach 18% with VSWR < 2. Simulation results indicate that the phased array can be steered up to ±60° in 2-dimension space with axial ratio below 4dB within the whole bandwidth, when circular polarization is configured. Besides, with maximum gain of 28.2 dBi in the normal direction, the 3dB beam-width is about 6.9° with the side lobe levels (SLLs) all below -13.3 dB. With the wide spatial coverage and reconfigurable concurrent multi-beam, this design will be promising in applications like SATCOM and wireless communication systems.

Abstract:In this paper, we present an analytical beam-forming approach capable of synthesizing differently shaped beams for circularly symmetric conformal apertures with axisymmetrical excitations. Closed form formulas of far-field radiation are mathematically derived in order to obtain rotationally symmetric radiation patterns for typical conformal apertures frequently used in satellite and flight vehicle applications, such as the cone-surfaced, truncated cone-surfaced, hybrid disc-cone and sphere-cone apertures. Based on these formulas, various shaped beams, including pencil, flat-topped and bimodal beams can be rapidly achieved by adjusting either the geometric parameters or the excitation distributions of the conformal apertures. The deterministic approach proposed in this paper provides an efficient method to synthesize specified beam shapes for the aforementioned conformal apertures. Collaborating with conventional optimization based beam forming approaches, the proposed approach can effectively shorten the time-consuming optimization in the beam forming of circularly symmetric conformal arrays, especially large conformal arrays.

Abstract:The development of millimeter-wave phased array based on the digital beamforming architecture needs to overcome a physical-level challenge due to the contradiction between the massively integrated TR devices and the compact volume for thermal dissipation. In this work, we demonstrate an analog beamforming solution based on a reconfigurable Fresnel-zone-plate (RFZP) antenna for 28-GHz phased array. The proposed RFZP including 16x8 unit cells based on active frequency selective surface (FSS) with varactor diodes to implement a continuous 180 degrees phase tunability. The measured scan ranges up to +/- 50 degrees and +/- 30 degrees at horizontal plane and vertical plane, respectively. The proposed RFZP antenna is an attractive solution for millimeter-wave beamforming.

Abstract:In practical applications, a highly flexible conformal phased array will experience inevitable deformations during severe weather conditions. This will distort radiating beams, especially beam directions. To overcome this technical challenge, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a self-adaptive phased array printed on a highly flexible, strongly deformable aperture. The unique novelty of this study is the use of a single six-axis inertial measurement unit (IMU) for each array element to measure the element positions in real time during deformations, and the derivation of a dedicated algorithm integrating accelerations, angular velocities, and phases of elements to compensate for the deterioration of radiating patterns due to deformations. Microwave vector multipliers (VMs) are further used to control the phases continuously. Finally, an experimental prototype operating in S-band is implemented, validating the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Abstract:The phase lens, also called kinoform, a promising focusing component in an integrated micro-optical system, was produced by femtosecond laser fabrication via two-photon photopolymerization. Kinoforms consisting of two-, four-, eight-level subzones with level thicknesses of 475, 238, and 119nm demonstrate diffraction efficiencies of 30%, 54%, and 68%, respectively, which are comparable with the theoretical limit and with those from the commercial phase lenses. In addition, a reflective diffractive micromirror was proposed and realized with the aid of electroless plating. These works show the promising prospect of femtosecond laser fabrication in manufacturing optical micronanodevices and their integrated system with optical quality.
A dielectric Kinoform zone plate with 15 nm resolution and high efficiency for soft X-ray optics

Abstract:Abstract X-ray microscope as an important nanoprobing tool is expected to play a powerful role in nano-inspections of materials. Despite the fast advances of high resolution focusing/imaging reported, the diffraction efficiency of existing binary zone plates as the lenses in the microscope is mostly around 5% in practice and rapidly goes down to 1-2% when the resolution approaches 10 nm, failing its applications in advanced scientific research. Zone plates with Kinoform profile are supposed to be high efficient, little progress for achieving both high resolution and high efficiency has been reported. The conflict between the resolution and the efficiency in X ray optics has become a long-lasting bottleneck in the further development of X-ray microscope. Based on our earlier success in developing high efficiency Kinoform zone plates by greyscale electron beam lithography, we proposed, in this work, a new zone plate structure by combing a dielectric Kinoform zone plate with an atomic layer deposited HfO2 zone plate to achieve high resolution focusing/imaging with high efficiency. Beam propagation method was applied in designing and optimizing Kinoform shapes of the zones, greyscale and/or binary electron beam lithography was carried out for generating both 3D Kinoform as well as rectangular zones with aspect ratio of 23/1 in dielectric resist, and finally high-quality atomic layer deposition of HfO2 was conducted to form the 15-nm wide outermost zone. Optical characterizations by an in-house developed soft X ray microscope demonstrated 15-nm resolution focusing/imaging with over 7% efficiency, which is the highest with such a resolution as far as our awareness. The origin of such an improvement behind the proposed novel lenses is interpreted by our BMP calculation results and the comparisons with existing performances by other reports in literature was discussed.

Abstract:An analytical expression is obtained for the shape of a coherent kinoform X-ray lens surface, which is different from a parabola. A lens with a focal length of 1 m for monochromatic radiation with a photon energy of 12 keV is calculated. Two refractive lens materials—Rose's alloy and silver—are selected. With a lens diameter of 200 μm, the diameter of the central diffraction maximum at the focus, calculated using the Huygens–Fresnel principle, is about 1 μm. The fraction of the light flux power incident on the lens in the central diffraction maximum of the focal spot is 14.6% for Rose's alloy and 16.1% for silver. The capabilities of the femtosecond two-photon nanolithography developed at the Lebedev Physical Institute and Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology for producing efficient kinoform lenses for synchrotron radiation X-ray microscopy are demonstrated.

Large Aperture Continuous Phase Diffractive Optical Element for Beam Transform

Abstract:Beam transform, such as to obtain uniform focal spot with flat top, steep edge, low side lobes and high light efficiency, can be realized well by diffractive optical element(DOE). The DOE has many advantages, such as high light efficiency and strong phase distribution design flexibility. To increase the light efficiency and decrease large-angle scattering, continuous phase DOE should be used. The phase design is completed by a kind of multi-resolution hybrid algorithm based on hill-climbing and simulated annealing, which exploits sufficiently strong convergence ability of the hill climbing and global optimization potential of the simulated annealing. A kind of phase distribution with good geometrical structure and diameter 80mm is obtained by choosing disturbance function, receipt and refused probability and so on. The simulated results show that the light efficiency is more than 95%, and the non-uniformity is less than 5%. Because the etching depth is direct proportion to the exposure time, to obtain continuous phase DOE, a kind of hollowed-out mask, namely gray-scale mask, is used to control exposure time of each area. The mask is manufactured by linear cutting machine. The continuous phase DOE with diameter 80mm is fabricated by ion-etching with the mask. Finally, the tolerance of manufacturing error including depth error and alignment error are analyzed.
A New Hybrid Algorithm for Designing the Continuous Phase Screen Used for Beam Shaping

Abstract:A novel hybrid phase-retrieval non-iteration algorithm combining random searching algorithm and simulated annealing algorithm has been proposed for designing the diffractive optical elements (DOES) used for producing a uniform focal spot required with top head, steep edge, low side lobe or concentrating high power performance in the main lobe. The continuous phase distribution of diffractive optical elements with a good geometrical structure has been obtained by the new hybrid algorithm. Starting the optimal process with a continuous phase profile and taking the special phase function, this new algorithm can construct fully continuous phase screens for tailoring far-field intensity profiles (beam shaping). The continuous phase distribution using the new algorithm will be fabricated easily, make the elements have high diffractive efficiency, heighten the threshold value resisting the high power laser and get the far-field intensity profile with high uniformity at the main lobe, very small side lobe and steep edge. The computer simulation has shown that the algorithm is robust and maintains the continuous phase distribution throughout the optimal process. The DOE'S with continuous phase have been designed with more than 99% energy efficiency, less than 1% side slobe non-uniformity, and, with more than 90% energy efficiency, less than 2% top non-uniformity, respectively.

Abstract:X-ray microscope as an important nanoprobing tool plays a prevailing role in nano-inspections of materials. It is well known that the rectangular zone shape, beamstop, limited height/width ratios, material absorption of light and structural defects are likely responsible for the limited efficiency. Although zone plates with Kinoform profile are supposed to be efficient, progress for achieving both high resolution (<30 nm) and high efficiency (>5%) have hardly been addressed in soft x-ray. In this work, we propose a compound Kinoform/Fresnel zone plate (CKZP) by combing a dielectric Kinoform zone plate with a 15 nm resolution zone plate. Greyscale electron beam lithography was applied to form the 3D Kinoform zone plate and atomic layer deposition was carried out to form the binary zone plate. Optical characterizations demonstrated 15 nm resolution focusing/imaging with over 7.8% efficiency in soft x-ray. The origin of the efficiency improvement behind the proposed compound lens is theoretically analyzed and discussed.
Binary phase plate for high-intensity non-diffracting hollow beam structure

Abstract:We propose a new technique for the formation of non-diffracting hollow beam structures using the combination of an axicon lens and a binary multi-sector phase plate. The phase plate provides an azimuthal π-modulation of the phase of the transmitted wavefront. The produced intensity distribution is well described by a pair of optical vortices having opposite topological charges associated with the number of sectors in the phase plate. The proposed technique forms a spatial intensity pattern with a maximal intensity that is 2 times higher when compared with similar techniques, such as spiral phase plates.

Abstract:In high power laser system, such as inertial confinement fusion(ICF) and laser forming, the requirement for the intensity distribution of the focused laser profile must be top head, steep edge, low side lobe and concentrated high power performance in the main lobe. Diffractive Optical Element(DOE) is used to produce an arbitrary radiation distribution on the focal plane. It has the features of high diffraction efficiency, steep edge, small side lobes and high flexibility. A kind of hybrid algorithm based on hill-climbing and simulated annealing is utilized for phase design because of the ability of strong convergence of the hill-climbing and the global optimization potential of the simulated annealing. Continuous phase should be adopted to increase the light efficiency and decrease wide-angle scattering. The continuous phase DOE with diameter 100mm has been obtained by gray-level mask and ion-etching on the K9-glass substrate. The DOE's interferogram is given to detect the precision of manufacturing. The manufacturing error, including depth error and alignment error, are analyzed. The intensity distribution of the focal spot is measured by a general CCD, and a series of attenuators are used to increase the dynamic range of the CCD. The results after data-processing show that the uniform illumination has been obtained.

Abstract:Reflector antenna with defocused array feed is investigated.The phased array feed moves towards the reflector and locates at the defocused area,which can enhance the beam reconfiguring ability and limited angle scanning capability.Improved projection matrix algorithm is adopted to get the excitation coefficients of the feeding phased array under phase-only control constraint.A numerical analysis is carried out in order to demonstrate the effectiveness of the approach.The patterns of the offset parabolic antenna fed by defocused feed array are effectively synthesized,including scanning and reconfigurable beams.The beam direction,beam-shape and side-lobe level requirements are met under phase-only control.The design results are verified by the simulation software GRASP.
Efficient Beam Manipulation with Phase Symmetry Operations on Transmitarrays for Flat-top Beams

Abstract:Beam manipulation is of paramount importance in wave engineering, enabling diverse beam shapes like pencil beams, flat-top beams, and isoflux beams to cater to various application missions. Among the beams, shaping flat-top and isoflux beams remains challenging with the traditional synthesis approaches that mainly rely on optimization algorithms. Here, we develop transmitarrays to efficiently generate flat-top and isoflux beams from the first principle of field superposition with negligible optimizations, by performing phase symmetry operations. The theoretical analysis not only facilitates the shaping of flat-top and isoflux beams but also exhibits controllable beamwidths. Two prototypes using four-layer double-ring unit cells are fabricated and measured from 27-29 GHz. Experimental validation confirms the efficacy of the phase symmetry operations in generating flat-top beams with adjustable beamwidths. The concept of phase symmetry operations can be extended to other vectorial or scalar components, offering potential applications for the manipulation of various waves such as acoustic waves, water surface waves, and beyond, thereby advancing related applications.
