Abstract:The phonon spectra and thermal properties of the hexagonal MoS2 are investigated by using first-principles calculations within the density functional theory (DFT). Finite displacement method is used to calculate the phonon vibrational spectra and phonon density of states. The vibrational modes at the Gamma point are analyzed by using group theory. The temperature and pressure dependence of its thermal quantities such as the thermal expansion, the heat capacity at constant volume, the Gibbs energy and entropy are obtained based on the quasi-harmonic approximation (QHA). Our results show that both the thermal expansion coefficient α and the heat capacity CV increase with T3 at low temperatures and gradually turn almost linear as the temperature increases. It is found that the entropy is sensitive to the temperature while the Gibbs free energy is more sensitive to the pressure change.

Abstract:The phonon instability and thermal equation of state of Mo are extensively investigated using density functional theory. The calculated phonon dispersion curves agree well with experiments. Under compression, we captured a large softening in the transverse acoustic (TA) branches of body-centred cubic Mo. When the pressure is raised to 716 GPa, the frequencies along Gamma-N in the TA branches soften to imaginary frequencies, indicating structural instability. For face-centred cubic Mo, the phonon calculations predicted the stability by promoting the frequencies from imaginary to real. Within quasi-harmonic approximation, we predicted the thermal equation of state and some other properties including the thermal expansion coefficient alpha, product alpha K-T, heat capacity C-V, entropy S, Gruneisen parameter gamma and Debye temperature Theta(D). The melting curves of Mo were also obtained successfully.

Abstract:The phonon spectra, phonon optical activities, thermal expansion and thermodynamic properties of ordered quaternary carbides M2TiAlC2 (M=Cr, Mo, W) and their ternary counterparts Ti3AlC2 and Cr3AlC2 are studied by first-principles phonon calculations. Phonon eigenvectors of all Raman and infrared modes are analyzed. We find that vibrational frequencies of some Raman active modes (A1g and E2g) can be correlated to the strength and reduced mass of covalent M (4f)C or metallic M (4f)Al bond in all studied structures. Phonon mode-Grüneisen parameter and macroscopic Grüneisen constants are evaluated from phonon spectra. The thermal expansion coefficients, specific heats and isothermal bulk moduli at finite temperatures are obtained under the quasiharmonic approximation (QHA). The average linear thermal expansion coefficient (LTEC) values are found to be αL=11.30×10−6K−1, 7.15×10−6K−1, 8.67×10−6K−1, 10.29×10−6K−1 and 15.70×10−6K−1 for Cr2TiAlC2, Mo2TiAlC2, W2Ti2AlC2, Ti3AlC2 and Cr3AlC2 in a range from 300K to 1400K, respectively. The hypothetical Cr3AlC2 phase shows strong anharmonic effects in the calculated thermal expansion profile above 600K. Using Slack-model, the thermal conductivities are also evaluated, and the values are κ=36.1W/mK (34.4W/mK, 27.2W/mK) for Cr2TiAlC2 (Mo2TiAlC2, W2Ti2AlC2) at room temperature.
Roles of Mass, Structure, and Bond Strength in the Phonon Properties and Lattice Anharmonicity of Single-Layer Mo and W Dichalcogenides

Abstract:A hierarchical first-principles study has been performed to reveal the roles of mass, structure, and atomic bond strength in phonon spectra, phonon anharmonicity, thermal expansion, and thermomechanics of single-layer Mo and W dichalcogenides (MX2, X = S, Se, and Te). The strength of the M-X bond is determined by the competition between ionicity and covalency and increases (decreases) with increasing the cation 1 (anion) nucleon number. The total mass and cation anion mass ratio isotopically influence phonon frequencies. The twofold lattice dimensionality renders the bending ZA mode with parabolic dispersion and negative Gruneisen constant (gamma). While nonorthogonal bonds lead to interdirection vibrational hybridizations, which increases yz, but decreases ITA and y. The minima of gamma(ZA) and gamma(LA) decrease with decreasing bond strength and become negative in MTe2. MX, always has a negative thermal expansion at low temperatures (T < 50 K) due to the advanced excitation of those low negative-gamma ZA modes. At higher temperatures, the excitation of other positive-y modes results in positive thermal expansion. Additionally, thermal expansion is determined jointly by lattice stiffness, phonon excitation, and phonon anharmonicity. The contributions of these involved factors are quantitatively disentangled here, and their relationships with mass, structure, and bond strength are revealed. The softening of the bulk modulus of MX2, under heating is mainly caused by thermal expansion, which is partially canceled by the stiffening effect from phonon excitation. Both bulk modulus and its thermal softening rate decrease with anion nucleon number, due to the decrease in bond strength and bond-strength anharmonicity, respectively.
Thermal Expansion and Vibrational Properties of Α-Se and Α-Tese2 Based on First-Principles Calculations

Abstract:Based on the first-principles calculations, we investigated the thermal expansion and related vibrational properties of monolayer alpha-Se and binary compounds alpha-TeSe2. The effect of binary compounds on thermal expansion properties is explored theoretically. We find the two monolayers show totally positive thermal expansion from 0 to 500 K. The linear thermal expansion coefficients are close to each other below 300 K. However, they are 3.5 and 2.5 x 10(-5) K-1 for alpha-Se and alpha-TeSe2 at 500 K, showing much larger thermal expansion of the former. It can be attributed to the weaker Te-Se bond in alpha-TeSe2. Moreover, the phonon spectra, mode Gruneisen parameters, macroscopic Griineisen parameters, and the contributions of phonon modes to total thermal expansion at different temperature are investigated detailed, in order to explore the underlying physical mechanisms of thermal expansion.

Abstract:In this paper, the thermodynamic parameters such as Grüneisen parameters and anharmonicity are investigated utilizing pressure- and temperature-dependent Raman spectroscopy of monolayer transition-metal dichalcogenides MX2 (M = Mo, W; X = S, Se). The result indicates a good stability of these compounds in the pressure range of 0–9.0 GPa and the temperature range of 175–575 K. It is a general trend that Raman mode varies with temperature and pressure linearly for monolayer MX2, and the thermodynamic Grüneisen parameters can be determined from the temperature- and pressure-dependencies of Raman spectra. Based on these measurable parameters, anharmonic parameters are extracted for each active Raman mode. The result shows that the temperature dependencies of the phonon frequencies are well described by considering the contributions from thermal expansion and lattice anharmonicity.

Abstract:We report some high P-T diffraction experimental results on molybdenum using synchrotron x-ray and time-of-flight neutron-diffraction techniques. Unit-cell dimensions, measured up to P = 10 GPa and T = 1475 K, were derived from the refinement results and fitted to a high-temperature third-order Birch-Murnaghan equation of state. The derived thermoelastic parameters for molybdenum are: isothermal bulk modulus K-T0 = 266(9) GPa with a pressure derivative of bulk modulus partial derivative K/partial derivative P = 4.1(9), temperature derivative of bulk modulus partial derivative K/partial derivative T = -3.4(9) X 10(-2)GPa/K, volumetric thermal expansivity alpha = a + bT having a = 1.32(14) x 10(-5) K-1 and b = 1.26(15) X 10(-8) K-2. Further, all of the previous experimental data involving shock wave, ultrasonic, thermal-expansion measurements were also analyzed and fitted to a high-temperature Birch/Vinet equation of state (EOS) and the thermal pressure approach of Mie-Gruneisen EOS, respectively. With the greatly extended P-V-T data coverage, we refined the thermoelastic parameter set for molybdenum as isothermal bulk modulus K-T0 = 268(1) GPa with pressure derivatives of bulk modulus partial derivative K/partial derivative P = 3.81(6), partial derivative K-2/partial derivative P-2 = -1.41(13) X 10(-2), temperature derivative of bulk modulus partial derivative K/partial derivative T = -2.13(31) X 10(-2) GPa/K, volumetric thermal expansivity alpha = a + bT having a = 1.31(10) x 10(-5) K-1 and b = 1.12(11) X 10(-8) K-2, and an invariant of alpha K-T,= 5.43(5) X 10(-3) GPa/K over a wide P-T range. We have conducted a neutron-diffraction study at simultaneous high pressures and high temperatures. Thermal vibrations of atoms (Debye-Waller factors) of molybdenum were derived as a function of pressure and temperature. The experimental results of thermoelastic equation of state parameters are compared with previous experimental data derived from shock wave and ultrasonic elasticity measurements.

Abstract:Using first-principles simulation, the correlation between structure, phonon spectra, thermal expansion, and thermomechanics of single-layer MoS2 is established. The laminar structure results in the low-dimension ZA mode with a parabolic dispersion and negative Gruneisen constants (gamma), while the nonorthogonal covalent Mo-S bonds (or intralayer thickness) result in the interatom and interdirection vibrational hybridizations, which tend to increase gamma. There is a negative-positive crossover in thermal expansion coefficient at 20 K, because of the competition between the modes with negative and positive gamma. Although the phononic activation at finite temperatures has a stiffening effect on the bulk modulus, the dominant effect from thermal expansion softens the lattice upon heating. The intralayer thickness results in the similarity between the thermal expansions of SL and bulk MoS2. Our numerical results explicitly support that the experimentally measured thermal shifts of the Raman modes are dominated by multiphonon scattering, but not thermal expansion.
Enhanced Thermoelectric Performance of Two Dimensional MS2 (M = Mo, W) Through Phase Engineering

Abstract:The potential application of monolayer MS2 (M = Mo, W) as thermoelectric material has been widely studied since the first report of successful fabrication. However, their performances are hindered by the considerable band gap and the large lattice thermal conductivity in the pristine 2H phase. Recent discoveries of polymorphism in MS(2)s provide new opportunities for materials engineering. In this work, phonon and electron transport properties of both 2H and 1T' phases were investigated by first-principle calculations. It is found that upon the phase transition from 2H to 1T' in MS2, the electron transport is greatly enhanced, while the lattice thermal conductivity is reduced by several times. These features lead to a significant enhancement of power factor by one order of magnitude in MS2 and by three times in WS2. Meanwhile, the figure of merit can reach up to 0.33 for 1T'-MS2 and 0.68 for 1T'-WS2 at low temperature. These findings indicate that monolayer MS 2 in the 1T' phase can be promising materials for thermoelectric devices application. Meanwhile, this work demonstrates that phase engineering techniques can bring in one important control parameter in materials design. (C) 2018 The Chinese Ceramic Society. First-principles Study on Phonon Transport Properties of MoTe2 and WTe2 Monolayers in Different Phases

Abstract:Phase engineering of two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDC) monolayer is a key method for manipulating the lattice thermal conductivity. In this paper, we investigate the phonon thermal transport properties of MoTe2 and WTe2 monolayers with H and T ' phases (H-TMDC and T '-TMDC) via first-principles calculations. H-MoTe2 and H-WTe2 monolayers have isotropic lattice thermal conductivities, whereas the lattice thermal conductivities of T '-MoTe2 and T '-WTe2 monolayers are highly anisotropic. Meanwhile, in comparison with the H phase, the maximal lattice thermal conductivity in T ' phase has a reduction of 83.85% and 77.92% at 300 K for MoTe2 and WTe2 monolayers, respectively. Furthermore, we observe that phonon heat capacities and phonon lifetimes of T '-TMDC monolayers are lower than those of H-TMDC monolayers, while the phonon group velocities of T '-TMDC monolayers are larger. Hence, the competitive relationship among these parameters leads to a lower lattice thermal conductivity of the T '-TMDC monolayer. In addition, lower critical phonon MFPs (mean free path) of T '-TMDC monolayers prove that the lattice thermal conductivity has a weaker size dependence. These findings demonstrate that MoTe2 and WTe2 monolayers with different phases have a great potential in 2D nanoelectronic devices.
Direct calculation of the linear thermal expansion coefficients of MoS2 via symmetry-preserving deformations

Abstract:Using density-functional perturbation theory and the Gr\"uneisen formalism, we directly calculate the linear thermal expansion coefficients (TECs) of a hexagonal bulk system MoS$_2$ in the crystallographic $a$ and $c$ directions. The TEC calculation depends critically on the evaluation of a temperature-dependent quantity $I_i(T)$, which is the integral of the product of heat capacity and $\Gamma_i(\nu)$, of frequency $\nu$ and strain type $i$, where $\Gamma_i(\nu)$ is the phonon density of states weighted by the Gr\"uneisen parameters. We show that to determine the linear TECs we may use minimally two uniaxial strains in the $z$ direction, and either the $x$ or $y$ direction. However, a uniaxial strain in either the $x$ or $y$ direction drastically reduces the symmetry of the crystal from a hexagonal one to a base-centered orthorhombic one. We propose to use an efficient and accurate symmetry-preserving biaxial strain in the $xy$ plane to derive the same result for $\Gamma(\nu)$. We highlight that the Gr\"uneisen parameter associated with a biaxial strain may not be the same as the average of Gr\"uneisen parameters associated with two separate uniaxial strains in the $x$ and $y$ directions due to possible preservation of degeneracies of the phonon modes under a biaxial deformation. Large anisotropy of TECs is observed where the linear TEC in the $c$ direction is about $1.8$ times larger than that in the $a$ or $b$ direction at high temperatures. Our theoretical TEC results are compared with experiment. The symmetry-preserving approach adopted here may be applied to a broad class of two lattice-parameter systems such as hexagonal, trigonal, and tetragonal systems, which allows many complicated systems to be treated on a first-principles level.

Abstract:Among two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides, molybdenum ditelluride (MoTe2) is of great interest to achieving unique functionalities in diverse electronic, photonic, and phononic devices. Despite extensive studies over the past decade, the thermal transport properties and mechanisms of MoTe2 remain largely unclear. Here, we grow few-layer (7L, 10L, and 17L) single-crystalline 2H-MoTe2 and measure their in-plane thermal conductivities using an optothermal Raman technique. The room-temperature values range from 4 to 9 W m-1 K-1, substantially lower than theoretical predictions considering only three-phonon scattering. By employing first-principles calculations and machine learning-assisted molecular dynamics simulations, we reveal that four-phonon scattering could suppress the thermal conductivity of 2H-MoTe2 by 80%, which agrees with experimental measurement and is mainly attributed to the flexural acoustic modes. Thickness-dependent suppression is observed owing to the varying reflection symmetry. Our work highlights higher-order phonon-phonon interactions in 2D materials and offers guidance for the thermal design of emerging devices.

Abstract:Compounds Ho2W3O12, Ho2Mo3O12, Tm2W3O12 and Tm2Mo3O12 have been prepared by conventional solid-state reaction. Their crystal structures and thermal expansion properties were investigated by room temperature and high temperature X-ray diffractions. It is found that, in certain temperature ranges (200–700°C for Ho sample and 200–800°C for the others), Ho2Mo3O12, Tm2W3O12 and Tm2Mo3O12 all adopt orthorhombic structure and show negative thermal expansion whereas Ho2W3O12 adopts monoclinic structure and shows positive thermal expansion. The volume thermal expansion coefficients obtained for Ho2W3O12, Ho2Mo3O12, Tm2W3O12 and Tm2Mo3O12 from high temperature XRD are 29.46×10−6°C−1, −34.50×10−6°C−1, −11.85×10−6°C−1 and −12.09×10−6°C−1, respectively. Thermogravimetry was used to study their hygroscopicity in air.
Lattice dynamics and thermodynamics of molybdenum from first-principles calculations

Abstract:We calculated the phase transition, elastic constants, full phonon dispersion curves, and thermal properties of molybdenum (Mo) for a wide range of pressures using density functional theory. Mo is stable in the body-centered-cubic (bcc) structure up to 703 +/- 19 GPa and then transforms to the face-centered close-packed (fcc) structure at zero temperature. Under high temperature and pressure, the fcc phase of Mo is more stable than the bcc phase. The calculated phonon dispersion curves accord excellently with experiments. Under pressure, we captured a large softening along H-P in the TA branches. When the volume is compressed to 7.69 A(3), the frequencies along H-P in the TA branches soften to imaginary frequencies, indicating a structural instability. When the pressure increases, the phonon calculations on the fcc Mo predict the stability by promoting the frequencies along Gamma to X and Gamma to L symmetry lines from imaginary to real. The thermal equation of state was also investigated. From the thermal expansion coefficient and the heat capacity, we found that the quasiharmonic approximation was valid only up to about melting point at zero pressure. However, under pressure, the validity can be extended to a much higher temperature.

Abstract:We studied the crystal structure of bulk and monolayer (ML) metal dichalcogenide MoTe2 using ab initio density functional theory (DFT) calculations, while treating the exchange-correlation potential with the Generalized Gradient Approximations (GGA) method. The bulk crystals were found to have the lowest energy for the Rhombohedral perovskite system, with space group D-H4(6) (ML = D-H1(3)) with P63/MMC, #194 (ML = P6M2, #187) and lattice parameter of a = b = 3.518 angstrom (ML = 3.518 angstrom), c = 13.974 angstrom (ML = 7.604 angstrom), bond angle of alpha = beta = 90 degrees, gamma = 120 degrees. Calculations were performed to investigate the electronic, density of states (DOS), optical, elastic and phonon properties.

Abstract:The properties of two-dimensional (2D) materials have been extensively studied and applied in various applications. Our interest is to theoretically investigate the thermal transport and thermoelectric properties of the 2D transition metal dichalcogenides MoX 2 (X = S, Se, Te). We employ density functional theory and Boltzmann transport theory with relaxation-time approximation to calculate the electronic and transport properties. We also implemented the kinetic collective model to improve the calculation of lattice thermal conductivity. Our calculations indicate that MoTe 2 has the highest ZT of 2.77 among the other MoX 2 at 550 K due to its low thermal conductivity and high electrical conductivity. Consequently, we suggest that MoX 2 monolayers hold promise as materials for energy conversion devices due to their relatively high ZT. Moreover, these results could be beneficial to design 2D material based high performance thermoelectric devices.

Abstract:The structural and thermodynamic properties of tetragonal-TiH2 under high temperatures and pressures are investigated by Ab initio calculations based on pseudo-potential plane-wave density functional theory method within using the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) and quasi-harmonic Debye model. Some ground state properties such as lattice constants, bulk modulus and elastic constants are good agreement with the available experimental results and other theoretical data. Through the quasi-harmonic Debye model, in which the phononic effects are considered, the thermodynamic properties of tetragonal-TiH2 such as thermal expansion coefficient, Debye temperature, heat capacity and Gruneisen parameters dependence of temperature and pressure in the range of 0-1000 K and 0-10 GPa are also presented, respectively.
Phononic transport in 1T prime-MoTe2: anisotropic structure with an isotropic lattice thermal conductivity

Abstract:Molybdenum ditelluride (MoTe2) is an unique transition metal dichalcogenide owing to its energetically comparable 1H and 1T prime phases. This implies a high chance of coexistence of 1H-1T prime heterostructures which poses great complexity in the measurement of the intrinsic lattice thermal conductivities (kappa). In this work, via first-principles calculations, we examine the lattice-wave propagation and thermal conduction in this highly structurally anisotropic 1T prime MoTe2. Our calculation shows that the 1T prime phase has a sound velocity of 2.13 km/s (longitudinal acoustic wave), much lower than that of the 1H phase (4.05 km /s), indicating a staggered transmission of lattice waves across the boundary from 1H to 1T prime phase. Interestingly, the highly anisotropic 1T prime MoTe2 shows nearly isotropic and limited kappa_L of 13.02 W/mK, owing to a large Gruneisen parameter of acoustic flexural mode, heavy masses of Mo and Te elements and a low phonon group velocity. Accumulative kappa_L as a function of mean free path (MFP) indicates phonons with MFP less than ~300 nm contribute 80% of kappa_L and an inflection point at ~600 nm. Our results will be critical for understanding of the size dependent kappa_L of nanostructured 1T prime MoTe2.
